FROM THE DRIVERS SEAT - Cascade Sports Car Club
April 2014 www.cascadesportscarclub.org ISSUE 4 FROM THE DRIVERS SEAT As you read this you may already know what I am writing about, but these are very important things to discuss. First, I want to give a big at-a-boy to Cascade to be the first (as usual) club to standup when our house at PIR needs some help. Cascade is the first to support FOPIR to build badly needed turn stations, and we are getting the turn 8 station which will now be proudly displayed as the Cascade Turn Station. I am so proud of our club, and I feel so lucky to be a part of this organization. Once Cascade made the first step, Fast Specialties, Casa Bella Granite & Marble and a BSI Racing, came together to rebuild turn station #11. The Oregon Porsche Club of America is now rebuilding turn Station #1. By the time you get this I hope to have station #4 and #9 sold. This will help FOPIR prove to the City that they can perform, and help the track receive new and much needed turn stations. There are a number of other projects from a stop light at the stop sign, power to the stations and an improved restroom at the east of the paddock that FOPIR is now working on, so if you miss the turn station challenge there are other things to donate to. Remember that FOPIR is a 501- 3C and is a good place to send some extra dollars to improve PIR. I want to give Mark Wiggington a big thank you for coming to the March General Meeting to talk to our members. Mark is such a great asset to PIR it was hard for me to ever realize that he is near retirement. He called me after the meeting that I said he will always be there, to remind me that he is stepping down by the end of 2014. That was hard for me to think about, as we will very much miss him. He has been so good to work with over the last 15 years, but I hope to have him continue in some way to work with FOPIR, and I know I can call him anytime. If you see him at any of our events please tell him thanks for all his hard work as he has been the number one reason we still have a track here to race on. I look forward to learning more on the new museum, World of Speed in our next general meeting in April, and our FIRST RACE around the corner. See you at the races. THE LOOSE NUT This Month’s topic: “Bring Back Our Favorites, But Not The Duds!” by your Loose Nut. I’ve decided to become my own Loose Nut Automotive Activist. As you know, I am on a campaign to get car racing (both road racing and rallying) into the Olympics, more specifically, the summer Olympics of 2016. Now, I have expanded my crusade to include convincing the car manufacturers to bring back some of my favorite cars. I think all of you should do the same. Below are some of my favorites, as well as my not-so-favorites. I encourage you to choose your favorites and campaign for their return. What triggered this was as simple as seeing a Porsche 356 coupe driving around. My simple Loose Nut brain went into overdrive and said “I want one of those.” More precisely, I want a car that looks just like that but has all the amenities of a modern car. Therefore, I wrote Porsche of North America a letter saying they need to bring the 356 back, put a nice 4 cylinder engine in the back everyone would be happy. If Subaru will share engines for Toyota (the Subarion/Scionaru FBRSZ), then they ought to share with VW/Porsche. I even went on to tell them I would quit my job and work for them for 4-5 years to get it done. All I would ask in return is the first production car. I have not heard back from them yet. I think they are busy… We all should pick our favorite cars, try to influence the car manufactures and see what happens. Also, keep in mind, the car companies are already going down this path, sometimes attaching the “retro” term to it. Mustang √. Camaro √. Challenger √. Don’t we deserve the Javelin (or the even better looking AMX)? Hmmm – wait, then we’d have to bring back AMC, and with that might come the Gremlin, or even worse, the Pacer. I don’t know about you, but you really have to wonder what they were thinking… The Gremlin – take an AMC Hornet (nothing to brag about) and chop the tail off, and call it a Gremlin. At least they had the sense to give it an appropriate name – An imaginary mischievous sprite regarded as responsible for an unexplained problem or fault, especially a mechanical or electronic one, or an unexplained problem or fault. [From the on-line Oxford dictionary.] Now the Pacer – don’t get me started… Pacemaker, Lunar Module, Fishbowl on wheels, Hamster-Mobile, Greenhouse, Egg on Wheels, Terrarium, Pregnant Rolle Skate, a Great Big Rolling Windshield on Wheels, Glass Monster, Pregnant Guppy… ‘nuff said. A few others to make sure don’t come back: The Cadillac Cimarron. That was the “Caddy that Zigs” if you are unfortunate enough to recall. A Cadillac is something that that is a combination of comfort and “go”. The Cimarron simmered into the annuls of cars you never want to admit you owned (like the Mustang II). As for the Mustang II and the Pinto it was derived from. I don’t think Ford sold enough of the Mustang II cars to know if they blew up if they were hit in the back. And the Yugo. [I can’t think of anything good to write here. No, got it.] Not all was a total mistake on the Yugos. At least they added rear window defrosters so your hands stayed warm when pushing them in the winter. OK, back to the good stuff: Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite – everybody loves those dinky frogeyed cars smiling at you. You had to smile back. Lotus 7 – Sold as a kit. Perfect! Sure, it might be tough to make these little car pass the modern crash tests, but they really ought to be exempt from them. With those little cars, you sat so close to the ground that it feels like you are going twice as fast as you really are. Therefore, they are safer than modern cars! Studebaker Golden Hawk – the early ones with the big fins. Don’t we all strive to drive around in the closest thing to the batmobile we can find? The Aston Martin DB5 – I don’t care if you like James Bond or not – that is a fine looking automobile. The jaguar XKE. I have a preference for the coupe, therefore, we can keep it simple for Jaguar and ask them to make a removable hard top. If they need help, we can fix them up with Mazda to help them build a convertible and hardtop. Will we succeed? We’ll never know until we try. Let’s not settle for jelly bean sedans that all look the same. The way car design is going, we need our key fobs just so we can find our cars in the parking lots. We want to be unique – just like everyone else! Demand to be different and be proud to be a Loose Nut. Until next time – Your Loose Nut CASCADE SPORTS CAR CLUB Presents Rose City Opener XXIII April 26th and 27th, 2014 **** Starting with the 2012 race season Helmets will have a 2005 Snell approved rating or better***** This is a Non -Chicane race Entry to PIR will be through turn 8. People under 18 years old are not allowed in hot pits, pre-grid or on victory laps. Children under 12 must have direct adult supervision at all times. A current and properly completed minor release form, signed by an authorized adult, must be on record for all minor participants brought into PIR. Competition numbers must be readable: Section 1106 enforced. The scales will be open Saturday from noon and Sunday all day. No skateboards or scooters allowed in the paddock area. Users of bicycles and small-motorized vehicles may have riding privileges revoked at any time by the Race Chairperson. Refueling is not allowed in pre-grid. Fueling in the hot pits requires a crewmember assigned only to operate a fire bottle. Excess spillage will result in a penalty. No smoking allowed in hot pits, pre-grid or any PIR building. Only one support vehicle allowed in the paddock. Pit and pre-grid roads must remain clear. Noise rule ICSCC 1112 enforced! 103.0 dB at 50 ft.: no exceptions! Oregon State Law requires functioning mufflers to be used at PIR. Functioning mufflers must be capable of reducing sound energy by at least 5dB at trackside. Cars losing mufflers, even if they are still below the sound level, will be black-flagged immediately. Damage to the track, grounds or buildings, regardless of cause, will be charged to the driver responsible. Also, damage to any equipment or devices used by the sanctioning body (ICSCC) or sponsoring club (CSCC) to conduct this race, regardless of cause, will be charged to the driver responsible. Family and crewmembers of drivers are to contact the landline communication person at pre-grid with any questions regarding their driver or car while on track. All entrants for this event shall present at tech inspection an empty, sealable container or containers, marked with the driver’s name and license number, capable of holding 2 gallons of liquid. These are to be used to remove all oil, cleaners, brake fluid, etc. from PIR. There will be no drums provided. Anyone caught dumping oil at the raceway will be fined and banned from the raceway. This is a PIR regulation. If entries exceed the number of cars allowed on the track for a particular event, drivers and cars entered as an “additional event” will be restricted from participating, on a first-come, first-served priority based on the date entries were received. This is in order to allow participation by all drivers for whom the event is their primary event, including Novices upgrading to a championship event. NSF checks will be charged an additional $50 fee. The racing “hot pit” is defined as that area under the control of Hot Pits personnel. This area is located immediately west of the break in the concrete wall half way up the pit lane. Per ICSCC rule #1607, any person over that “pit wall” during practice, qualifying or races shall wear long pants, shirts that cover the shoulders, and shall not be barefoot or wear open-toed shoes. At the one-minute warning, pre-grid becomes a “hot” area. At that time, pre-grid must be cleared of all crew, support personnel and spectators. Notwithstanding the above, ICSCC rule #1607 does not apply to the pre-grid area. All cars that are towed into the paddock area are subject to being dropped off in impound. Drivers must wear all required drivers safety equipment (per ICSCC rule # 1105) before they are allowed to enter the track, while they are on the track, beyond positive protection, under flat tow, or in the hot pits area. The 5-minute warning will be given approximately 8 minutes before the start of the race. Due to recent incidents, extension cords from the pit exit to tech/scales must use a more secure method other than Duct Tape. Staggered start and split start requests shall be submitted to the race steward no later than the end of on-track activity on the day previous to the race. Blendline- the Red Blendline stays on drivers left as you enter the racetrack from the pit area. You are required to stay on the right side until the Red Blend line ends. This is REQUIRED EVERY TIME you enter the Race Track, other than the race out lap. The Red Blendline stays on the drivers left at the end of the Turn 12 tirewall. If you are to exit the race track at anytime, you are required to stay completely to the right. If you cross the blendline with ONE TIRE you are required to stay out for one more lap unless you are exiting the track after you have received the checkered flag and crossed the start/finish line. Thank you – Mike Smith, CSCC Race Chairman March 28, 214 Group66 MotorSports Olympia, WA Group66 MotorSports is forming a team to race in the Mazda MX-5 Cup. The car hopefully be built in time to enter the last OR Regional Spec Miata Race for testing purpose. The reason in racing in the Mazda MX-5 Cup is twofold. The primary reason to get exposure for the company’s high performance parts for Japanese cars in the Oregon and Washington markets during 2014. Secondly, it will provide Paul Hutt, owner of Group66, to fulfill his dream of owning racing team. They expect to obtain sponsors. However, only a small amount of sponsorship money will be needed. There will be a formal process in selecting the driver for the OR SCCA Spec Miata racer. However, this process will not begin until June of this year. By November another selection process will be conducted, which may take up to three months. Several Spec Miata drivers in the OR region will be asked to handle the selection process. Given the company’s excellent capital position, they expect to continue in the MX-5 Cup for at least two additional years. For more information contact Paul Hutt at [email protected] IN THE VERY EARLY DAYS Well, this time I will veer away from the Cascade/4 Cylinder's early days to talk about what it was like driving in the early 1950's. Anything other than an American sedan was a real rarity. Typically, one might go a month or more without seeing ANY other foreign car. When one did, one usually made a "U" turn, just to find out the other car had also made a "U" turn, to chase YOU down! But it was worth it. This usually led to a long discussion and a new, lasting friendship. This is how I met Vic Wandtke, and how we met other future 4-Cylinder members. Driving a sports car in the '50s was interesting, but fraught with perils. Almost all roads were 2-lane, with HILLS!!! Hills were a problem, as they were populated with trucks with passenger-car engines in those days. They would crawl up a hill at 5-10MPH [maybe], and then run flat out down the other side making it difficult to pass. In those days, ALL other cars towered above the TC, making it impossible to see anything dead ahead. So, I adopted the practice of driving to the far-right edge of the lane, (remember the TC was right-hand-drive), allowing me to then see around the car(s) ahead. Which frequently resulted in a driver three or four cars back in traffic to spot an apparently open space ahead, then pull out and pass (remember, 2 lanes only) and he would arrive at the "space" to find it was already occupied by ME. At this point, the other driver would dive in to the "space" to avoid an oncoming car. I would have to dive onto the shoulder. Which, in a stifflysprung TC could be VERY interesting at highway speeds. Another interesting item was parking in Portland. Note that the TC was delivered without front or rear bumpers (and also without a heater or defroster, more on that later). So a venture into downtown resulted in cruising until a suitable long parking space could be found. Finally finding one at the extreme start or end of a block to allow you to leave all of the extra room (the TC was pretty short remember) for "crunch-space" because most American parking at that time was done by the backing up or forward, until contact was made. PARTS!!!!! This was another interesting phase of being in "early innovator" as neither NORTHWEST Light Cars or Armstrong & Goetz stocked and any parts in any depth. As a result, on hearing of any shipments to either company, it became a necessity to make an immediate visit to buy up any parts that might be needed anywhere in the near future. I myself still have sufficient spokes for the 19 inch wheels to last for anywhere in the foreseeable future. AND Armstrong & Goetz earned the popular title of "Strong arm and Guts". EVENTS. In the very early days, the clubs events consisted almost entirely of rallies, gymkhanas and other public road events, as from Portland the nearest races were in Seattle or San Francisco until Tillamook became available. One of the most popular early events was the occasional Gymkhana at Mocks Bottom (the parking was originally made for the World War II shipyards workers on Swan Island). This was pretty well a combination of right angle turns and short straight-aways but allowed some pretty good competition. We saw some very interesting cars at those events including the curved Dash Oldsmobile of Don Bell's, the immense Mercedes supercharged SSK touring car of Fred Thorson, plus an occasional later entrance by Harry Eyerly with his absolutely amazing Crosley based class H racing car. The first road event I remember going on was with the Sports Car Club of Oregon which was a "mystery rally”. This consisted of a list of places around the city that had some distinguishing characteristic to be noted and entered on the route instructions, and the object was to get to all of them, and no mention was made of the importance or non-importance of time. You might imagine that this resulted in a wide variety of driving styles by the contestants. I remember distinctly following an MG TD, and being followed by an even more aggressive driver down from Skyline Blvd on W. Burnside Rd. The result was that I would try to pass the TD in front at every opportunity and the driver behind me would take the same opportunity to try to pass me. This eventually resulted in two cars with their brakes completely faded arriving behind the slower TD as they arrived at the four way stop halfway down Burnside. Believe me, all drum brakes could be absolutely faded-out in those days! Ah well, enough for now. Charlie Brown "Old No 1" “Dash for Kids” Calling All Members!!! We are off and racing with “Dash for Kids”. As your new event chair I need your help more than ever. I would first like to introduce myself. I originally began my membership with CSCC in 1999 but I haven’t been active since 2003. I have also been a member of SCCA and a current member of ORPCA. I am excited to take an active role in CSCC and make a difference in our community. Right now I am looking for help finding people to help in our kids’ activity area. Please reach out to your friends and family for face painters, clowns, and balloon artists. This is a great time to embrace their inner artist. I am asking for anyone that is willing to donate 4 hours on Saturday and/or Sunday to support our kids’ activity area. Any help will be considered. I have already sent out letter to companies that have donated in the pass. I am excited to hear our response this year. I would love to add more vendors, businesses and individuals that may want to donate goods, gift certificates or money to our cause. Please let me know if you have any leads. Be thinking of what you would like to donate also. I am looking for NEW or VERY slightly use items. We want to keep our auction a class act. Now is the time to make a commitment to advertise your team or business on our commemorative T-shirts. Don’t be shy with your donation. Contact me with your commitment. You have always made this a great event and the tradition will continue.
