EDITORIAL
Winning the title of world’s best ski resort in 2013 and
2014 is a fantastic reward, but more than that, it’s a big
responsibility. We want to make Val Thorens a resort
that’s committed on every front to offering the best
service at the best value for money, with a welcome
and experiences that delight our clients.
Val Thorens: the highest resort in Europe (2,300 metres)
and the highest point of Les 3 Vallées, the largest ski
area in the world (600 kilometres of interconnected
ski runs offering doorstep skiing). Created from the
imagination of its visionary pioneers in 1971, “it’s a
resort unlike any other” which carefully plans each new
development with an outlook centred on community,
sociability, and innovation: Live United.
This winter’s key words will be thrills on the ski area,
with entirely redesigned fun zones, experiences with
Le Pashmina, a new 5-star mountain refuge style hotel,
and finally service, thanks to the VTPass, a major
innovation for mountain resorts.

THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION
With 150 kilometres of runs, the Val Thorens ski area
requires permanent maintenance and specialist snowmanagement expertise. In order to efficiently manage
artificial snow and optimise water use, the entire slope
maintenance fleet (groomers and snow cannons) is being
digitalised. Networking the devices makes it easier to
produce extremely high quality fine snow and to shape
new, more comfortable routes for skiers, as well as
improving the quality of fun zones. This new, intelligent
system is sure to make its mark on the surroundings!

VAL THORENS: THE SKICROSS CAPITAL
ID
O YOU SKI CROSS OR NOT?
This winter, turn your ski tips towards the FIGHT SKI CLUB, an experience
that started online and wound up on the slopes! Fight Ski Club is the story
of the biggest secret in ski cross finally unveiled by Jean-Fred Chapuis and
his followers including Arnaud Bovolenta, Bastien Midol and Youri DuplessisKergomard…
I A SKICROSS WEBSERIES LAUNCHING THIS WINTER
An amazing cast, with tongue-in-cheek references to David
Fincher’s cult hit, Fight Club! Inspired and narrated by JF Chapuis,
this series dives into the original spirit of the sport: the thirst
for challenge and the joy of competing with your mates. For them, ski cross
is a lifestyle in which fun, healthy competition and anti-conformism are the
watchwords.
Careful though, to become part of the community you need to be aware of
the rules… but shhh, we won’t say anymore. Come back this winter for 3
episodes of the first season, due to arrive on Val Thorens’ YouTube channel.
As a bonus, the Club master will also deliver his technical secrets in a series
of 4 technique videos.
I A PLAYGROUND FOR SELF-EXPRESSION
The fun continues on THE ski run: the Jean-Frédéric Chapuis World Cup
stadium, designed to be accessible to as many people as possible. JF is
challenging anyone who can beat his best qualifying time of 1 minute
11 seconds 32 milliseconds!! Skiers of all ages can try their luck on a lifesized 1.4 kilometre course equipped with a timer system. Five cameras
are located along the course so you can take home a souvenir of your
achievements or share the video on social networks.
I WIN YOUR PLACE IN THE FIGHT SKI CLUB!
Once a week, a Fight Ski Club race is organised for the general public.
Participants can make multiple attempts at the race in order to achieve their
best time and win a place on the podium. The Fight Ski Club community will
reward its new members with Val Thorens-branded prizes. Free to register, the
race takes place on Wednesdays from 11am to 3pm, with gold star level ability
required.

[PORTRAIT]
JEAN-FRÉDÉRIC CHAPUIS,
THE SKI CROSS PRODIGY,
WINNER OF EVERY TITLE!
He started out as an Alpine
skier at Val Thorens’ Ski
Club before swapping
to Ski Cross. The move
was a real revelation, as
5 years later at the age of
just 23 he became World
Champion, since which
time he’s never missed a
podium. The young prodigy
masterfully led the historic
French triple-win at the
Sochi Olympic Games and
took home an Olympic gold
medal. In 2015, he finished
the world circuit by winning
the Crystal Globe in Megève
and closed the season on
his own run in Val Thorens,
winning the title of French
Ski Cross champion.
We said that once Chapuis
got started, nothing could
stop him! After this series
of prestigious titles, JeanFred’s new challenge is to
start again and keep on
excelling!

Le pashmînâ, from the Persian word pashmîneh, also known as
“the golden thread”, is one of the world’s most precious fabrics, as
well as being a protective refuge in Kashmir, where it originated.
That’s everything the new 5-star PASHMINA hotel aims to be: a
refuge, an oasis away from the rest of the world, an invitation to
another land based on five promises, one for each star: a change
of scenery, family spirit, luxury, escape, and a guaranteed
fantastic holiday in Val Thorens.
A luxury refuge created by the Gorini family, who arrived in
Val Thorens in 1972, the early years of the resort. Cédric, Marc,
Arnaud and Stéphanie surrounded themselves with people as
passionate about the mountains as they are, such as architect
Arro Architetti, who knew just how to express their taste for
open spaces, light, and a warm welcome. They envisaged this
extraordinary hotel as a place of sharing for adventure-lovers,
centred on the values of authenticity, hospitality and escape.
Highly respectful of its extraordinary environment, the PASHMINA
blends seamlessly into its unique landscape. The interior fittings
highlight traditional and specialist local expertise; not to mention
the expertise of chefs Josselin Jeanblanc and Romuald Fassenet,
“Best Craftsman in France”.

FAMOUS FOR ITS FESTIVE APRÈS-SKI, VAL THORENS IS SHAKING THINGS UP BY OFFERING NEW
ATMOSPHERES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SHARING EXPERIENCES AND GETTING AWAY FROM IT ALL.
AN OPEN-AIR TRAPPER’S LOUNGE
Boasting a mountain lounge atmosphere at the heart
of the resort, this new area is perfect for reflecting on
your ski day over a glass of mulled wine heated on the
wood fire or sharing toasted marshmallows around
the brazier. Gourmets won’t be able to resist a “Tire
sur neige” - a delicious maple syrup lollipop rolled in
the snow. When the ski lifts close for the day, there’s
nothing else for it but to let yourself fall under the spell
of the natural calm descending over the mountains and
listen to the crackling of burning logs as a symbol of the
trapper spirit. Free activity, every Monday during february
holidays from 5pm to 7pm.

engine, carried on the pilot’s back, has been added.
The engine means you can control your altitude
and stay in the air as long as you like. A comfortable
30-minute flight in a two-seater accompanied by
Timothy Green (high altitude world record holder at
5,088 metres), over landscapes so beautiful from the
air you won’t believe your eyes. Depending on what

or acrobatic flights. And to stay environmentally
friendly, the engine uses Bioethanol fuel, which is
good for the planet!

CREATIVE WORKSHOPS FOR
PARENTS AND CHILDREN
LEARN A LANGUAGE WHILE
YOU SKI
Holidays in the snow aren’t just about skiing and
tobogganing… Children between the ages of 2 and
8 years can take part in new workshops once or
twice a week, starting after Christmas, totally free of
charge. Children and parents can enjoy quality
time together discovering creative activities based
on the mountains and winter. Making Christmas
tree baubles, sparkling snowflakes, and animated
postcards, kids will create a little hand-made memory
to take away with them while their parents relax!
Whoever said that you couldn’t learn while having
fun, or combine something useful with a good time?
Certainly not the Ski-Cool ski school, which is giving
you the chance to learn a new language while you
ski this winter. Our bilingual ski instructors will help
you to learn a few words, increase your familiarity,
or hone your expertise in another language during
group lessons. Lessons take place in French for
English speakers and in English for French speakers.
Price: 204€ per week (6 x 3hrs) during school holidays only

OPENING IN DECEMBER 2016
OPENING IN DECEMBER 2016

as the first construction built using innovative ecofriendly building techniques. Energy consumption
management,
insulation,
draught-proofing,

Spearheading this large-scale project is a multilingual Val Thorens family with real expertise in
hospitality and service. Inside this magnificent
chalet, a Chef and staff will be at guests’ service
throughout their stay.
A major project has been undertaken to provide
hikers in winter and summer alike with a new
mountain refuge above Lake Lou, just next to the
former mountain refuge, which will be remain.
The Belleville Valley’s local authorities have invested
1.2 million euros in the project, which will sleep up
to 35 people, offer a large dining room, and include
a caretaker on site to greet hikers in summer and
winter. This ambitious project aims to reinvigorate
this wild vale, the pearl of the Belleville Valley. In
summer, a number of hiking itineraries will also
be available, starting from Lake Lou and heading
towards the Encombres Valley.
