FROM OUR CLERGY
From Rabbi
Peter S. Knobel,
Ph.D.
Interim Senior
Rabbi
Rabbiknobel
@sholomchicago.org
2
I am thrilled to have been invited to serve as your Interim Senior Rabbi. Temple Sholom is a
wonderful congregation which has an important place in the history of Chicago and the Reform
movement. It is a great honor for me even temporarily to be one of your rabbis. Elaine and I have
lived in Evanston since 1980. Both our sons, daughters-in-law, and our six grandchildren live in
the Chicago area. This is our home community. Although my first official day as Interim Senior
Rabbi is not until March 5, I have already had a number of wonderful conversations with Rabbis
Shoshanah Conover and David Sandmel, Cantor Aviva Katzman, our new Executive Director
Boni Fine, and our President Beth Inlander. The other senior staff and support staff have all been
very helpful in making me feel welcome and providing me with information as well, which will
enable me to start working on day one.
Like all of you, I wish Rabbi Petuchowski a refuah sheleimah. He is a much admired colleague
and has served Temple Sholom with distinction, carrying on the tradition of strong rabbinic
leadership. My role as Interim Senior Rabbi will be, first and foremost, as a member of the clergy,
involved in all aspects of congregational life. In addition, I will be working with the congregation
and its leadership to prepare for the selection of a new senior rabbi and to begin a process of
visioning for the future. During my brief tenure, my door will always be open to you to provide
you with the best rabbinic service of which I am capable. My office is on the fourth floor with all
of the other clergy. I hope that I will get to know as many of you as possible and that when I leave,
at the end of June 2013, I will have made many new friends.
While this is a period of transition, my goal is to work with all the volunteer and professional
leadership toward strengthening our existing programs and services while fostering this sacred
community; one capable of engaging each of us in a vibrant and vital Jewish life. Through
worship, study, and social justice we will develop close and important relationships dedicated to
preserving and enhancing the Jewish community and the Jewish people, and to making a more
compassionate and just world through serving God.
As I arrive at Temple Sholom, we will be preparing to celebrate Purim. While we are fortunate
to live at a time and in a place where we can live active public Jewish lives without fear, Purim
is a reminder that this has not always been the case. It was only through the brave actions of
Esther and Mordecai that our people were saved from the wicked tyrant Haman, who sought
our destruction. While the forces of evil are in check in this country, there are still those in other
places who continue to seek our destruction. Holocaust denial and attacks on Israel’s legitimacy
are deeply worrisome. For many years, peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians has been
a major thrust of my rabbinate. As I write this I am preparing to depart on an interfaith trip
of peace and understanding sponsored by the government of Indonesia where I will join eleven
other United States clergy, including Rabbi Asher Lopatin from our neighboring congregation
Anshe Sholom, and twelve Indonesian clergy on a journey that will take us to Jakarta, Amman,
Jerusalem, and Ramallah. When I return, I look forward to reporting on the experience as well
as sharing with you Elaine’s and my experiences this past Fall when I was the visiting rabbi at a
reform congregation in Auckland, New Zealand.
Be happy it is Adar. I am eagerly anticipating our time together. May this time strengthen our ties
to one another, to the greater Jewish world, and to all humankind. This is for me a shecheyanu
moment as I hope it be for you.

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Transitions and Celebrations . . .
Honoring Rabbi Petuchowski
Last month marked a significant transitional milestone for Temple Sholom as we formally
honored our senior rabbi of 14 years, Rabbi Aaron Mark Petuchowski, for his inspired leadership
at a dinner and special service on February 24. Under Rabbi Petuchowski’s leadership we
experienced changes in worship, a vibrant social justice and social action focus, and the ongoing
building of community within the congregation. We were moved by his sermons, informed by
his teaching, and blessed by his counseling and friendship. Rabbi Petuchowski has a great love
of music, and we were especially thrilled when Cantor Katzman and the choir sang a specially
commissioned piece by Danny Maseng, one of the Rabbi’s favorite Jewish composers, in honor
of the occasion. In addition to the musical tribute, the signed score was framed and presented to
Rabbi Petuchowski as a continuing remembrance of his time at Temple Sholom. We look forward
to including this special piece, “Modim, We Give Thanks,” in an occasional service and to adding
Rabbi Petuchowski’s portrait to the Lake Shore Lobby with those of our other distinguished
rabbinic leaders. We continue to wish Rabbi Petuchowski a refuah sheleimah, a complete and
speedy recovery, and look forward to seeing him from time to time at Temple Sholom.

President,

Welcoming Rabbi Knobel…Installation on March 9
As we enter March, we’re excited to welcome our Interim Senior Rabbi, Rabbi Peter Knobel.
As many of you know, Rabbi Knobel is a highly respected and nationally known voice in the
Reform Movement. He has significant experience leading congregations, teaching, as well as
working with congregations as an interim/visiting Rabbi. In addition to fulfilling the ongoing
duties of our Interim Senior Rabbi through worship, teaching, pastoral counseling and guidance,
Rabbi Knobel’s experience, vision, and strategic thinking will be invaluable as we conduct our
search for a Senior Rabbi. I’m particularly looking forward to services with Rabbi Knobel using
Mishkan T’Filah, the new Reform Siddur we use at Temple Sholom, which has also been widely
adopted throughout the country. Rabbi Knobel chaired the Editorial Committee that guided
the challenging and exciting process of creating Mishkan T’Filah. Although not formally leading
our Temple Sholom clergy team until March 5, Rabbi Knobel has already been hard at work
getting to know the clergy and staff. I’ve particularly enjoyed our many conversations, and am
sure that your opportunities to meet and get to know Rabbi Knobel will be inspirational and
informative. He’s a dynamic presence with a plethora of wisdom and ideas.
I hope you will join us on March 9, for Rabbi Knobel’s installation, where we’ll have the
opportunity to welcome him and his wife Elaine to our Temple family. We’ll also be celebrating
Purim with a special Persian feast and a joyous service (see p. 6 for the details).
Celebrating Together at Temple Sholom’s April 21 Gala
I’m also looking forward to seeing you at our day of celebration as we gather to support Temple
Sholom and have fun as we Rediscover, Reconnect, and Rejoice! at the Peggy Notebaert Nature
Museum on April 21. It will be an amazing day, starting with Family Fun at an enhanced Family
Shabbat experience in the morning, followed by a sophisticated and festive evening Gala with
delicious food, music, and dancing. We’ll have a chance to celebrate Cantor Aviva Katzman,
who earns her Doctor of Music Honoris Causa in her 25th year as a Cantor, through musical fun
during the evening. (A formal event to honor Cantor Katzman’s Honorary Doctorate will take
place next fall.) Your support of Temple Sholom is so important because it enables us to cover
our on-going operating expenses. Please come and participate in our live auction and exciting
raffle. Sponsor the event by joining the Host Committee and contribute through the Tzedakah
Registry. We’re so grateful to a very special Board member who has pledged $30,000 to match
any contributions greater than the $180 ticket price. Help us rise to the challenge and maximize
this gift. And most importantly, join us for this special day and evening of “fun-raising!”

The Holiday of Purim
m
Thursday, March 8
Purim is celebrated by the reading of the
Scroll of Esther, known in Hebrew as the
Megillat Esther, which relates the basic story of Purim.
Under the rule of King Ahashuerus, Haman, the King’s
prime minister, plots to exterminate all of the Jews
of Persia. His plan is foiled by Queen Esther and her
cousin Mordechai, who ultimately save the Jews of the
land from destruction. The reading of the megillah
is typically a rowdy affair, punctuated by booing and
noise-making when Haman’s name is read aloud.
Over the centuries, the holiday has gained in
significance and Haman has been transformed into
the embodiment of every anti-Semite in every land
where Jews were oppressed. The significance in Purim
lies not so much in how it began, but in what it has
become - a thankful and joyous affirmation of Jewish
survival against all odds.

BOOK CORNER
From
Michael Howards,
Temple Librarian
librarian@
sholomchicago.org
In the Library...
From time to time I have mentioned that our Rabbis and/or their fathers have been authors of
significant Jewish Literature or commentary. This month I am featuring The Jewish Annotated New
Testament.
Rabbi Sandmel has contributed to this volume, which is featured prominently in our 4th floor display
case. Both he and his father have contributed important books regarding the relationship of Jews and
Christians. With Passover and Easter coming up next month, this is particularly relevant. Here is part
of a description from Amazon.com:
“Although major New Testament figures--Jesus and Paul, Peter and James, Jesus’ mother Mary and Mary
Magdalene--were Jews, living in a culture steeped in Jewish history, beliefs, and practices, there has never
been an edition of the New Testament that addresses its Jewish background and the culture from which it
grew--until now. In The Jewish Annotated New Testament, eminent experts under the general editorship
of Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Z. Brettler put these writings back into the context of their original authors
and audiences. And they explain how these writings have affected the relations of Jews and Christians over
the past two thousand years.
“An international team of scholars introduces and annotates the Gospels, Acts, Letters, and Revelation from
Jewish perspectives, in the New Revised Standard Version translation. They show how Jewish practices and
writings, particularly the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, influenced the New Testament writers.
From this perspective, readers gain new insight into the New Testament’s meaning and significance. In
addition, thirty essays on historical and religious topics--Divine Beings, Jesus in Jewish thought, Parables
and Midrash, Mysticism, Jewish Family Life, Messianic Movements, Dead Sea Scrolls, questions of the
New Testament and anti-Judaism, and others--bring the Jewish context of the New Testament to the fore,
enabling all readers to see these writings both in their original contexts and in the history of interpretation.”
Temple Sholom Sisterhood presents the
Morning and Evening Book Clubs at Temple Sholom
Monthly Morning Book Club in March
Thursday, March 1, 11:00 a.m.
Featuring: Dreams of Joy by Lisa See
In this sequel to “Shanghai Girls” Lisa See returns to the story of sisters Pearl and May and Pearl’s
strong-willed nineteen-year-old daughter, Joy.
Reeling from newly uncovered family secrets, and anger at her mother and aunt for keeping them
from her, Joy runs away to Shanghai in early 1957 to find her birth father—the artist Z.G. Li,
with whom both May and Pearl were once in love. Dazzled by him, and blinded by idealism and
defiance, Joy throws herself into the New Society of Red China, heedless of the dangers in the
communist regime and the Great Leap Forward. Devastated by Joy’s flight and terrified for her
safety, Pearl is determined to save her daughter, no matter the personal cost. From the crowded
city to remote villages, Pearl confronts old demons and almost insurmountable challenges as she
follows Joy, hoping for reconciliation. Yet even as Joy’s and Pearl’s separate journeys converge, one
of the most tragic episodes in China’s history threatens their very lives.
Acclaimed for her richly drawn characters and vivid storytelling, Lisa See once again renders a
family challenged by tragedy and time, yet ultimately united by the resilience of love.

Did you know we have a very active and fun Young Couples Club? The YCC, led by Amanda
Rios and Aaron Lebowitz, has planned several exciting activities over the past few months! As
you can see in the pictures on the next page, ice skating at Millennium Park was just one of these
great get-togethers. They have also gone apple picking, watched Bears games, and laughed the
night away at improv!
From

Manager

If you know of any young couples, either Temple members or non-members who may be
thinking about joining a synagogue, please send their information to Amanda and Aaron at
[email protected] and [email protected]. They are happy to let people know
more and are always looking for more great people. Thanks to Amanda and Aaron for their
enthusiasm and passion toward building our Temple Sholom community!
Also, tell your friends about our next special 20s and 30s Sushi Shabbat on March 16. Rabbi
Conover will discuss Moses and interfaith dating and marriage. Thanks to one of our young couples,
David Starr and Brittany Lakin-Starr, you can help plan the music! Adon Olam fits with a lot of
popular songs. At the last Sushi Shabbat, we sang it to Rihanna’s “We Found Love.” Tell us what
tune you want to hear on our Facebook wall at www.facebook.com/TempleSholom20s30sPage.
For Sushi Shabbat, we ask for a $5 suggested donation that will go toward feeding the less fortunate
Lakeview residents dinner at our Monday Meal Program. To RSVP, please contact Kevin Gladish
at [email protected] or at 773-435-1536.
If you know anyone that wants to learn more about Temple Sholom or is interested in becoming
a member, please have them contact me directly at 773-435-1541 or at my email address,

This Winter please remember those who are less fortunate.
Remember we have bins for collecting household goods, usable clothing, and non-perishable food
in Bettie Port Hall. There are separate bins for eyeglasses and cell phones. Also do not forget the

B’nai Mitzvah
March 26 – Sponsored by the Milgrom Family in honor of Hailey Milgrom’s Bat Mitzvah

people involved, we also need some more Adults. Volunteers can come early at 3:30 p.m. and cook, or
come around 5:00 p.m. to help serve. If you’ve volunteered in the past or are interested in becoming
involved in the future and want to learn more about this exciting social action project, please join
us. Also we are always seeking donations – the Monday Meal would not be possible without your
generosity, and we very much appreciate your help. Please contact Kevin Gladish if you are planning
