Welcome DEAR MILITARY SPORTSMEN AND SPORTSWOMEN! Sweden has a fine tradition in ski sports and is the home country of many well-known skiers over the years. I think everyone has heard about Anja Pärson, Marcus Hellner, Charlotte Kalla and Björn Ferry for example. These athletes have several times spoilt the Swedish people with medals in the Olympic Games and the World championships. This month Sweden is host for three big ski sports events. In the beginning of March we had the Ski World championship in Falun and then the famous “Vasaloppet” was successfully completed. Now the turn to host a big event has come to the north of Sweden and Boden. As the Chief of Staff Swedish Army, I take great pleasure in being the patron of the 53rd World Military Skiing Championship. This is the fifth time that the championship takes place in Sweden. My hope is that it will be an appreciated and decisive competition. I welcome you all and wish you the best of luck in the competitions. I also hope you will all take the opportunity to follow the device of the International Military Sports Council; Friendship through sport!” General Anders Brännström Chief of Staff Army, Swedish Army Patron of the 53rd World Military Skiing Championship 4 As Commander of the Norrbotten Regiment, Boden Garrison and Military Region North, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the northern part of Sweden and the town of Boden and to the 53rd World Military Skiing Championship. Welcome DEAR MILITARY ATHLETES, The Military Region North is a very interesting region from many aspects. The size of the region is more than half of Sweden from Kiruna in the north and Östersund in the south. The garrison in Boden is one of the biggest in the Swedish Armed Forces and consists of the Norrbotten Regiment, the Artillery Regiment, part of The Armed Forces Logistics and part of the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration. The Norrbotten Regiment is the most northern regiment in the Swedish Armed Forces and has two mechanized battalions, a ranger battalion, seven Home Guard battalions and a regional HQ. The regiment is also responsible for the development, training and operational activities of a brigade command, for developing the Army`s ranger capabilities and the winter capability of all branches of the Swedish Armed Forces. The regiment is situated in many places in the whole Military Region North, in Kiruna, Boden, Arvidsjaur, Umeå, Härnösand and Östersund. The Artillery Regiment is the Swedish Armed Forces competence centre for indirect fire support and the regiment has the responsibility for two artillery battalions with the new artillery system Archer. The Boden Garrison has a lot of experiences in organizing international and national competitions. We also have a tradition to have great sportsmen and sportswomen in winter sports, orienteering and shooting. In 1984 the World Military Skiing Championship was conducted in Arvidsjaur and in 2008 the World Military Championship in Shooting was organized here in Boden. The outcome of both these championships was a great success. I hope of course that this championship also will be a success with both good sport results and a lot of friendship – friendship through sports. I am convinced that Pagla Ski Stadium and Storklinten Alpine Ski Center will be the perfect venues for this event. Our championship organizers and support organizations from the sport associations in Boden and the surrounding areas are working very hard to make this championship a success and an event that will stay in your minds for a long time ahead. Athletes, I wish you every success in the championship in the spirit of fair play and friendship. Together we can make this competition into a high quality and successful championship. Once again, warm welcome and good luck! Colonel Mikael Frisell Commander of the Norrbotten Regiment Boden Garrison and Military Region North 5 Welcome BODEN GARRISON Since the beginning of the 20th Century, Boden Garrison has been an important cornerstone in Sweden’s defence. Boden Garrison is one of Sweden’s largest garrisons and continues to play an important role in producing operational units for both national and international tasks.
