It is important that you are well informed on it. Please read and pass on: How do you know if you are truly admitted to a hospital? This sounds like a dumb question, but not knowing the answer can cost you a great deal of money if you are a Medicare recipient. A person can be admitted on an inpatient basis which is what is assumed by most of us – or a person can be admitted on an observation basis. The statuses look the same on the surface in that patients in both categories may stay for many days receiving medical and nursing care and tests and treatment. A person’s hospital admission status is determined by the admitting physician. In many cases it will be observation, rather than inpatient, to get a sense of how the patient is doing and to protect the hospital against being financially penalized by Medicare for unnecessary admissions and readmissions. For example, if persons who were originally in the hospital under observation are readmitted to the hospital, they are not counted as readmissions. In recent years the number of patients many hospitals admit and retain under observation has more than doubled. It is at the time of discharge when the difference between admitted/inpatient and observation/ outpatient status becomes dramatically clear. Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) covers the first 48 hours of an observation admission and all of the care of a person who subsequently becomes an inpatient. Coverage for a patient who continues on observation after 48 hours is switched to Medicare Part B which usually only covers doctors’ services and outpatient care. This results in co-pays of some 20 percent for the doctors’ and outpatient services with no cap on hospital services and high prices for medications which will be billed by the hospital. Spending time in the hospital on observation also does not count toward the three consecutive days of hospitalization needed to qualify for Medicare-covered skilled nursing facility services if needed. All of these costs will have to be assumed by the patient or family so please make sure to ask your doctor whether your loved one is being admitted under observation or inpatient. Cynthia IN LOVING MEMORY May you find comfort in knowing your thoughtful gifts have made a difference in the lives of many area seniors. This month the Commission on Aging and Senior Center received a love gift in memory of: JUDY & JOSEPH GRONEY BONNIE STIRN FRANCES MILLER-PAPENFUS CAROL LYON Memorial Contributions May Be Sent To: Mecosta County Commission on Aging 12954 80th Avenue Mecosta, MI 49332 The Keyhole August News From The Senior Center… Hello Friends! How have you enjoyed your summer? I am loving it! Along with summer comes lots of fun summer activities! The first big activity that the Senior Center has in August is our Annual Yard Sale!! This year our Yard Sale will begin on Saturday August 6 and will run thru Friday August 19. We will be open Monday thru Saturday from 9 am until 4 pm (No Sunday Sales). There will be a “Bargain Breakfast” at 8 am before the Yard Sale opens on Saturday August 6! All proceeds from the “Bargain Breakfast” will go towards the Meals on Wheels program. On Wednesday August 10 Steve Troyer will be with us sharing his musical talents, so come listen to Steve and stay for lunch! Mark & Mark will be here on Wednesday August 24. It is always a fun time when Mark & Mark are here so come tap your toes and stay for lunch! If anyone is interested in helping out with the organizing and operation of the Yard Sale we could really use your help! Due to health issues for some of our regular helpers we are in dire need of your assistance! If you can help us out call the Senior Center and ask for Beth or Louise. Thanks!! We are in the process of starting a Weight Watchers Program here at the Center. We will keep you updated on the details as we progress forward! There is so much going on and I have only touched on a few things, so please read your Keyhole cover to cover! We wouldn’t want you to miss out on a great opportunity to enrich your lives. Then we are looking for you to join our Home Maintenance Program! We need Home Maintenance Workers to help Mecosta County senior citizens (55 yrs. or older) with affordable minor home maintenance and repairs. Seniors in need are in the Big Rapids, Mecosta, Remus, Stanwood/Canadian Lakes, and Morley areas. Do you mow lawns or do other yard work such as; weeding flowerbeds, painting, decorating, or staining? Maybe you are handy at small electrical and plumbing projects, doing light carpentry, cleaning gutters, and/or snow removal. If you love to clean houses or wash windows your community needs you. Not only do you receive an hourly wage from the Home Maintenance Members who hire you, you are helping seniors remain independent and in their own homes. This is not an offer of employment with Mecosta County or the Commission on Aging but a way to connect seniors with affordable contractors. Continue to drop them off at the Senior Center to Dawn Ketchum’s attention or email them to [email protected] By Cil August 2016 Ten Things I know about you Quarantine 1) You are reading this. “I hate to have to tell you this”, said the Doctor in a sad compassionate voice, “but you have been unfortunately been diagnosed with a highly contagious disease, we will have to quarantine you and you’ll only be fed cheese and bologna.” 2) You are human. 3)You can’t say the letter ”P” without separating your lips. 4) You just attempted to do it. 6) You are laughing at yourself. 7) You have a smile on your face and you skipped No. 5. 8) You just checked to see if there is a No. 5. 9)You laugh at this because you are a fun loving person & everyone does it too. “That’s terrible!” said the distraught young man, quickly sitting down before he could faint. “I don’t know if I could handle being in quarantine…and the cheese and bologna diet… What’s with the cheese and bologna diet anyway? I’ve never of such a diet before?!” “It’s not exactly a diet”, responded the Doctor matter of fact, “it’s just the only food that will fit under the door!” 10) You’re probably going to show this to others to see who else falls for it. PUZZLE ANSWERS There were three men on a hill with their watches. The first man threw his watch down the hill and it broke. The second man threw his watch down the hill and it broke. The third man threw his watch down the hill, walked all the way to the bottom, and caught it. The other two men were puzzled and asked the third man how he did it. The third man said, "Easy. My watch is 5 minutes slow!" I told my girlfriend she drew her eyebrows too high. She seemed surprised. If you’re ever attacked by a gang of clowns, go for the juggler. I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. I’m reading a book about anti-gravity. It’s impossible to put down. I couldn’t quite remember how to throw a boomerang, but eventually it came back to me. 4. The missing letters are LAE — EVALUATE Knowledge is knowing that the tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting a tomato in a fruit salad. Or CAE— EVACUATE I used to have a fear of hurdles, but I got over it. If you borrow money from a pessimist, he won’t expect it back. August 2016 August’s Cryptic-Quote I was addicted to the Hokey Pokey, but then I turned myself around.
