GeneralAccuScan™RemoteSensingDeviceApplications:

EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA)authorizedthisapplicationnearly10yearsagoafter
extensivedemonstrationstudies.RSDcleanscreeningoffertensofthousandsoflow‐emittingvehicles
theopportunitytoavoidthemorecomplexandobtrusivestation‐basedemissionsinspectioneach
year.

HighEmitterIdentification–TheefficiencywithwhichRSDcanidentifythosegasolineanddiesel
vehiclescontributingthemajorityofmobilesourceemissionsisinvaluabletoregulatoryauthorities,
hencethiswasthefirstUSEPA‐authorizedRSDapplicationinthemid‐1990s.RSDscost‐effectively
identifytensofhundredsof“high‐emittingvehicles”eachyearsoemissionsreductionstrategiescan
befocusedwheretheexcessemissionsarethegreatest.
Program/FleetEvaluation–TheRSDisunmatchedinitsabilitytocharacterizethereal‐world,on‐
roademissionsofin‐uselight‐andheavy‐dutygasolineanddieselvehiclefleetswithoutremoving
vehiclesfromservice.Therefore,theUSEPAhasauthorizedvarioustechniquesfortheuseofRSDsin
theperformanceevaluationofInspection/Maintenance(I/M)programs,includingcomparingI/M‐
testedfleetsindifferentareas,comparingI/M‐testedtountestedvehicleswithinageographicarea,
andcomparingfleetsubjecttodifferentemissionsreductionstrategies.


FraudDetection–FraudwithinI/Mprogramsisnotuncommon.RSDshaveexposedsuspicious
inspectionpracticesbyidentifyingelevatedon‐roadvehicleemissionsinvehiclesrecentlyinspected.
Inthissamemanner,systemicproblemsincertainmodelsandbrandsofvehiclesandemissions
controldeviceshavebeenidentifiedusingRSDs.

AccuScan™RSD5000UnattendedCapability:
EnvirotestproudlyintroducesitsRSD5000Accuscan®remotesensingdevice(RSD),afundamentalredesign
ofhardwareandsoftwareforimprovedperformanceandgreaterflexibilityinon‐roaddeployment.This5th
generationremotevehicleemissionsmeasurementtechnologyisasmaller,lighter,moreversatileplatform,
capableofunattendedoperation.
UnattendedoperationistheabilityfortheRSDtooperate
withouttheneedforaroadsidevanandoperator.Traditionally,
RSDshavebeendeployedfromvanswhichhadtoremainbeside
theRSDsothatvan‐mountedgeneratorscouldsupplytheAC
power,thewiredcomputerandauditgasbottlescouldremainin
thevan,andtheoperatorcouldsafelyandcomfortablymonitor
SCU/SDM with Battery Pack
systemoperationsfromwithin.TheRSD5000canalsobe
deployedandoperatedinthistraditionalmanner,however,
otherdeploymentoptionsarealsoavailable.Becausethe
RSD5000systemcomputerhasbeenintegratedwith
communicationsequipmentintoanewSystemControlUnit
(SCU)andtheredesignedRSD5000softwareallowssystem
operationstobeperformedthroughgraphicuserinterfaces
(GUI)thatcommunicatewirelesslywiththeSCU,thefixed
desktopcannowbereplacedwithamobilelaptop(WiFiOption).
RemoteGUIoperationisalsopossiblethroughabroadband
cellularconnection,allowingtheoperatortoleavethesite
CCM
entirely(UnattendedDeployment).Withthefutureadditionof
internalauditcells,auditgasbottlescanbeeliminatedaswell.
Oncesafelydeployedon‐road,theRSD5000willcollectdata
withoutsupervision.Itiscalibratedaspartoftheinitialset‐up
procedure.Fromthenon,thecalibrationisautomatically

adjustedforchangesinambientconditions.TheRSD5000
analyticalbenchincludesautomaticprocessesthatperformcontinuousmonitoringofon‐roadconditions,
includingautomatedbackgroundcorrectionandautomatedcalibrationadjustments.Sensorscontinuously
trackbackgroundgasconcentrationsandpre‐carbackgroundlevelsaresubtractedfromthepost‐carexhaust
todeterminetheemissionsfromthevehicle.Whenthepre‐carbackgroundgasconcentrationsareunstable,
forexample,duetothelingeringexhaustofapreviousvehicleorcontaminationfromoff‐roadsources,
algorithmsautomaticallymarkthesequestionableconditionstoavoidfalsebackgroundcorrection.
TheRSD5000softwareautomaticallyalertsremoteoperatorsifmanualinterventionisrequired.As
illustratedintheUnattendedDeployment,remotealertsallowsystemmonitoringandoperationfroma
remoteoffice,andon‐siteinterventionisonlyrequiredforunusualeventsorscheduledmaintenance
activities.ThecapabilitiesdescribedabovehavebeendesignedintotheRSD5000platformtoensurethe
acquisitionofreliable,highqualityvehicleemissionsmeasurements,toenableunattendedoperationandto
enableunobtrusiveRSDdeploymentwithoutspecialsitepreparation.

Gas Analyzer - Source/Detector Module (SDM)
The RSD5000 has a new enclosed SDM that houses
a single-detector filter-wheel spectrometer design.
Using Sapphire windows, the SDM is now sealed
against the environment to better protect the optics
and electronics inside. These windows are impervious
to scratching and are easily cleaned. Along with an
enclosed SDM, the RSD5000 has an automated
sealed gas calibration cell that eliminates the need for
using gas calibration bottles and will calibrate during
normal traffic movement. A gas solenoid is mounted
inside the SDM for the purpose of gas-auditing the
system.

The Corner Cube Mirror (CCM)
The Corner Cube Mirror (CCM) is a simple reflector of
the Source light beams. It “bends” the beams back to
the Detector side of the SDM. The CCM consists of
three stationary mirrors positioned at a 90º angle with
respect to one another. Sapphire windows have been
added to the front of the CCM for ease of cleaning
and extended mirror life.

Speed/Acceleration System (S/A Bars)
The new Speed and Acceleration Module uses
Ethernet network based communication technology.
This system provides valuable information to the
AccuScanTM operator about the driving conditions of
the vehicles at the time of emissions generation and
measurements. Speed and Acceleration data can
help operators optimize RSD measurement sites and
are used to calculate vehicle specific power, a
parameter used to qualify the emissions
measurement.
Video Camera for License Plate Capture
This high-speed video camera captures a digitized
picture of the rear of the vehicle using a built-in JPG
frame grabber. Camera is software controlled from
the System Control Unit, (SCU) using Ethernet
network based communication. The RSD software
allows for control of pan, tilt and zoom, light control
offset that automatically compensates for the lighting
conditions through-out the day.
System Control Unit (SCU)
The System Control Unit (SCU) combines the
functions of the previous Computer Console and
Junction Box into one module. The SCU utilizes
Windows based XP, an Intel P4-3.0GHz or greater
processor, a built-in 802.11g WiFi communication to
the remote GUI Laptop and a built-in GPS module.
The SCU gathers and integrates the emission
readings, speed and acceleration values and video
picture of the license plate. It also archives all
information including the digitized vehicle license
plate picture for future reference. The SCU also
mediates electronic connections between the
computer, monitor, CPU and other AccuScan
modules. The SCU provides the connection for all
the peripherals to the computer and serves as a
central power supply for the system.

Tag-Editing and Data Processing Windowsbased Software
Provides for remote data processing of license plate
data retrieved from on-road AccuScanTM emissions
testing. The software is configurable for different
states and/or countries.
Optional Body Sensor
The Body Sensor detects when a vehicle is passing
the test area. This information triggers the camera to
take a picture. A body sensor becomes necessary
when the measurement beams do not intersect with
the vehicle and another more consistent indicator of
the vehicle’s presence is required (e.g. high-exhaust
heavy goods vehicles).
Optional VID (customized to requirements)
Server class computer system and software for
archiving and maintaining remote sensing test
records. The VID can be programmed to registry
match vehicle license plates and produces
standardized custom reports.
Optional Battery Pack
The RSD5000 can be optionally powered by
batteries within the range of 36 to 56 volts; normally
48 volts direct current with a system power draw of
about 180 watts. The choice of battery technology
and hours of operation will determine the number of
batteries required. For example, four (4) PowerSonic
PG-12V42-FR Rechargeable Sealed Lead Acid Deep
Cycle 12V Batteries wired in series will provide at
least 10 hours of operation.

Accuracy Specifications for the

CO, HC and NO results are calculated tailpipe concentrations from their measured ratios to CO2 and
are corrected for both water vapor and any excess air in the exhaust.
The performance of the RSD5000 product will meet or exceed the following absolute and relative

Speed/Acceleration Measurement System:
The visible laser module is a 635 nm, 4.2mw Class IIIa laser.
Speed measurements are calculated results of the timed occurrence of 2 laser beam blocks of the
front (entrance) followed by the rear (exit) vehicle tires as they pass through the S/A system.
Acceleration measurements are calculated based on the difference in timing of the tire entrance and
exit laser beam blocks.
