Now I’d like to share some of the lessons I’ve learned since I’ve worked here. PMOC. If you aLended the February 25, 2010 luncheon, this should sound familiar. That was when execuve coach, author and keynote speaker Connie Dieken introduced us to PMOC: Preferred Method of Communicaon. Members reach me through email, phone, text or send a message via Facebook or LinkedIn. When I need to reach someone, I do so via the way that person usually reaches me. Each person has their PMOC. The best way to get in touch with someone you want to reach is to use their PMOC, not yours. Dieken says, “Their PMOC trumps yours. Choose their PMOC and you’ll increase the odds of geOng a quicker, more posive response.” I highly recommend Connie Dieken’s books “Talk Less, Say More” and “Become the Real Deal.” Giving. Another lesson learned was emphasized by Porter Gale, the speaker at the November 19, 2015 luncheon, when she spoke about “Give Give Get” as the “real networking secret.” In her book “Your Network Is Your Net Worth” (which I also highly recommend), she says, “A key to unlocking the hidden power of connecons is helping others when you don’t expect anything in return. It’s not as easy as it sounds.” Gale says, “Small acons can have large impact. If you put giving back and helping others at the center of your networking and relaonship building, you are likely to have more impacRul and stronger relaonships, among other benefits. By seeing networking as an opportunity to help people, I’ve discovered that these acons change me for the beLer and help me transion out of negave states of emoon. Put greater energy into giving than receiving. What you will find is that the giving will come back to you tenfold.” I have seen many many success stories proving this to be true! Customer Service Rules! Have you ever walked away from a business because you received poor customer service? Unfortunately, I’ve seen many businesses suffer or fail because they don’t see how important it is to provide solid customer service and they don’t hire/train employees who are able to offer friendly service with a smile. This is especially true in the new world of social media, as word about poor customer service can spread like wildfire. Likewise, word of a posive customer experience can go far, especially in networking organizaons. There are Facebook community groups for Rocky River, Westlake and other suburbs in which people ask for recommendaons and I’ve seen so many glowing and scolding comments about businesses and those comments reach thousands of people. I asked my Facebook friends how they define good customer service: and they said, “Meeng the client’s goals to the desired end result.” “Ask open-ended quesons to find out their needs. Fulfill those needs to the best of your ability,” “Genuine concern for the patron is the core.” Liz Manning, Execuve Director Page 2 Local Nonprofit Member Spotlight Last year, a new feature was introduced to spotlight Rocky River Chamber members that are local nonprofit organiza!ons. These nonprofits were started locally with a grass roots effort and joined the Chamber to raise awareness about their services and efforts. Just as we encourage our members to support fellow members when shopping/dining and conduc!ng business, we also encourage you to Donate Local to your fellow members. Last year, Prayers From Maria Children’s Glioma Cancer Founda!on, The Gathering Place and Village Project were featured. This month Hospice of the Western Reserve is in the Spotlight. Hospice of the Western Reserve provides end-of-life care, caregiver support, and bereavement services throughout Northern Ohio. The agency is dedicated to its mission of relieving suffering, enhancing comfort, promong quality of life, fostering choice and supporng effecve grieving. Originally founded in 1978 as “Cancer Family Service” in Lake County, today’s Hospice of the Western Reserve cares for nearly 2,000 paents per day with any life-liming disease. Care is provided anywhere an individual calls home: private residences, assisted living and nursing centers, hospitals and three in-paent hospice houses. Services extend to those coping with an earlier stage of a chronic disease through the symptom management (palliave care) provided by its Navigator program. The agency also offers a wide range of community support services; no hospice connecon is necessary to use them. Numerous grief support groups and art therapy workshops are available free of charge. Bereavement camps support children coping with the loss of a loved one by connecng them with other children who have experienced a similar loss in a picturesque natural seOng. The agency’s school crisis response team supports students, families and the community aVer violence, childhood suicide or the death of a faculty member. Grief resources for children and parents include access to tools and online resources. These include parental toolkits and follow-up classroom grief support sessions. More informaon is available at www.HospiceWR.org, or by calling 800-707-8922. The Lakewood Office, 14601 Detroit Avenue, coordinates care for families in Lakewood, Rocky River and surrounding communies and is regularly involved in community support acvies. February 2016 Page 5 Member Spotlight Member Spotlight Sonja Jarmoszuk DDS 21590 Center Ridge Rd. #B Rocky River 44116 440-333-4623 www.DrJarmoszuk.com AVer graduang from The Ohio State University in 1999, I never thought that I would be performing denstry on children, but aVer a year in a general pracce residency at St. Luke’s Hospital, off to Buffalo I went to specialize in Pediatric Denstry. Upon graduaon in 2002, I moved back to northeast Ohio, seLled in Rocky River and got married. Soon thereaVer, ScoL and I had two amazing boys. Then in 2006, I opened my private pracce on Center Ridge Rd. I am now in my 9th year, and LOVE what I do. My other dental friends think I am CRAZY seeing children as paents versus adults who they believe are more compliant. For me, seeing a child is much more enjoyable, rewarding, and dare I say, fun? What really amazes me is when I am in a store, at the liLle league field, or at the movies, liLle kids (my paents) come up to me, smiling and showing me their clean teeth. Some of them even ask me if I noced that they were missing a tooth. The kids recognize me—even though I am not in my typical work aOre, scrubs—while their parents do not. I love Rocky River, the people, the community, and all the great local businesses. I am very proud to be a part of it. On days that I am not seeing paents, you might see me walking the streets of Rocky River with my Portuguese Water dog, Pumpkin. Numerous businesses allow me to walk into their stores with her. I have been a proud member of the Chamber of Commerce since I opened my pracce in 2006 and I look forward to many more great years in River and with the Chamber. Lisa DeSico-Boyd Achieve Fitness 18626 Detroit Ave. Lakewood 44107 216-465-9335 www.RUReady2BFit.com My name is Lisa DeSico-Boyd and I am the owner of Achieve Fitness Studio. I joined the Rocky River Chamber March 2013 when I grand opened my personal training studio located in the CVS shopping Plaza on Detroit Road. I joined the Rocky River Chamber to meet other business owners in the area. My husband and I live in Kirtland with my four step-children. I have been a personal trainer/fitness instructor for 28 years. Working out actually saved me. I was sexually abused growing up and because of that, I had zero self-esteem, no confidence and was somewhat shy. I kept what had happened to me to myself telling no one. When I got to college, I was very depressed. I had made great friends, joined a sorority and was a cheerleader, but sll was carrying this inside. When I came home for winter break, my friends were going to the gym and asked if I wanted to go. I took a kickboxing class and fell in love with it. I went to the gym every day for the rest of the month I was home. I’d leave feeling a liLle beLer about myself each day. When I got to school I connued going to classes. That summer, I got cerfied to teach classes and I changed my major from Graphic Art to Kinesiology and became a personal trainer. Weight training gave me the power to feel confident about myself. I decided to get help and was able to kill the mental thoughts of my past living inside my head. By becoming a trainer, I wanted to be able to help empower other people, give them confidence and help them “achieve” their goals. I absolutely love what I do. My day is never the same. I enjoy movang and helping a client on their fitness journey to reach their goals. During my career, I’ve worked in big box gyms and in-home training. The last company I worked for was Fitness Together. I managed and helped open five personal training studios on the east side with this group. The last one was Rocky River. At the end of 2012, the owners no longer wanted this studio so I bought it and changed the name to Achieve Fitness Studio. I was in Rocky River for six years and loved it. I outgrew the space and in December 2015 I moved Achieve across the bridge into Lakewood. Besides personal training, we offer group fitness classes and nutrional coaching. LIKE the Rocky River Chamber of Commerce page on Facebook! Page 6 I have made a lot of friends through the Chamber and Rocky River community.
