What happened 10 years ago?
During the Productronica Show 1999 Adopt Advanced Optimisation GmbH (now AdoptSMT Europe GmbH)
moved office from the City of Salzburg to the new Headquarter in Groedig just outside of Salzburg. The
move was organized during the show because all sales activities took place at the show and so this was the
best time to move the phone system and computer network. Half the personnel at this time were at the show
and the other half was moving the office. During 10 years AdoptSMT grew in Austria from 6 employees to
40 and across Europe to 70.
Case study supplying Siplace to MELECS
MELECS EWS GmbH
specialiced in electronics, mechanics and switch gears
MELECS has over 25 years of experience as a reliable production partner to the industry. As a specialist
for electronics, switchgears and mechanics, MELECS is in the favorable position to offer everything from a
single source – from Engineering and Project Management via Industrialisation and Production through to
Logistics. Apart from the operational sites in Siegendorf / Burgenland (electronics production), Linz / Upper
Austria (switchgear construction) and Vienna (mechanics production) MELECS has a joint venture partner for
electronics in Sibiu / Romania and a partner for switchgears in Teplice / Czech Republic.
At its site in Siegendorf, MELECS has access to highly
automated electronics production lines and 320
employees. Large numbers of flat electronic assemblies
are produced here on a developed area of 9,000 m².
Most of the manufactured products are for white goods,
such as PCBs for controlling household appliances. In
addition, we manufacture electronics for the Automotive
and Communications sectors.

Certified quality equipment for most competitive prices
MELECS (under the former name SIMEA) had been in
contact with AdoptSMT for a long time already, but, as a
Siemens company, used to buy their equipment within the
Siemens group whenever possible.
As AdoptSMT was listed as a premium supplier already, it
was quite clear for them to contact AdoptSMT when they
decided to expand their production capacity in summer
2008.
To achieve the lowest possible production costs, MELECS
decided not to go for brand new machines, but to add
some more Siplace HS50 machines as they had them
already running in their facility. This way they could not
only save money on the purchase price of the machine but
they also managed to avoid additional spare parts stock,
operator training and process changes.
As there were big concerns about quality and reliability of pre owned machines not coming directly from
the manufacturer, we agreed to run an MCA (Machine Capability Analysis) on each machine by the expert
company CeTaQ GmbH.
This kind of analysis does not only lead to a capability report proving that the machine is working within the
original specification. It also provides a set of very good information guiding the engineer how to get the
machine back into the specification in case it was out already.
Providing this kind of safety finally convinced MELECS to drop some low cost offers they had and to go for
the best price / performance ratio – with AdoptSMT.
The rest of the story went quite smoothly:
MELECS engineers inspected the machines at our Paderborn facility when the MCA was done to give their
pre-approval.
Finally the machines were delivered to MELECS and installed without any major problems in February 2009
as agreed.
Pic. 01 shows the placement distribution out of a
capability report of a good running machine like
you will find running in most SMT lines. Placement
results will still be ok, even if some placements are
out of spec already.
Pic. 02 shows the results of the same machines after
corrective actions taken based on the capability
report. All placements within the original machine
specification at 4 sigma level.

The original concept of the Feeder Test Jig as it was then called was to only
mechanically index Fuji CP4/3 and CP6 feeders, later a camera was added to
check the pick position, and the rest is history.
The latest equipment from FeederMaster is their Digital version which has been
designed and manufactured to meet today’s exacting standards in feeder accuracy. It has been developed using the experience and success of its predecessor
and raising feeder testing and calibrating to a new higher level.

The FeederMaster Digital
Feeder Range
The new Feedermaster Digital is designed with
the same unique interchangeability of base which
allows the end user to test a range of different
feeder types, at present Siemens, Fuji NXT, Juki
and Assembleon GEM feeders. We are developing
other popular feeder type that would benefit from
using the Feedermaster Digital.
It now has a Digital Camera system with which
the new embedded PC and software can capture
store and analyze images of the feeder running at
machine speed. To achieve this we use our existing
master tape and measure if there are any deviations in the pick position.
CPK Measurement
From the data recorded above this is then used
to calculate the feeders CPK value. Which is a
measurement of its repeatable accuracy.
As the trend is for manufactures to use Electronic /
Electrical Feeders the system now has a Max
current reading that is shown and stored in the
feeder data base for every feeder tested.

This 2D bar code reader enables you to either
read the manufactures unique feeder number label
or read the label that can be generated manually
using the system.
When you have performed the calibration of any
feeder using the system it is stored under its unique
number displaying all the readings that were taken
during each test.

Intec Automation (in Insolvency) stock moved to AdoptSMT
AdoptSMT Europe GmbH purchased all stock belonging to Intec Automation GmbH
(in Insolvency) from the receiver. This adds another good lot of spares for common

Case Study Factory Move
Soundcraft SMT line relocation
In November 2008 Soundcaft, part of the Harman
International Group, decided to relocate it’s SMT line
from the second to third floor within it’s facility in
Potters Bar, England.
After approaching various companies to undertake a
turnkey project they decided to give the contract to
AlternativeSMT of London.
The main criteria of the move was that all equipment
should be decommissioned, moved, relocated,
recommissioned and back in production within 7 days.
Part of the brief was that equipment covered by
manufacturers service contracts should be handled by
the supplier but coordinated by AlternativeSMT.
Chris Herd, AlternativeSMT’s Technical Manager acted
as the Project Manager.
“AlternativeSMT utilised our expert resources from our
London and Cumnock facilities as well as specialist
knowledge from our AdoptSMT group headquarters in
Groedig, Austria
Our initial visit was to understand the timescale and
expectations, and then plan the logistics required to
achieve Soundcraft’s expectations.
The task in hand needed some specialist expertise on
equipment that included delicate measuring equipment.
The rain made no difference to Kent Machines and
they executed the move of each piece of equipment
with military precision.
By the end of Sunday all equipment was located into
it’s new position with only the minimal installation
requirements still to be completed on Monday the 15th.
Triotech, DEK and MacroSoultions, Europe were invited
to assist with the move of their respective equipment for
the de-commission and re-commission.
The moving of the equipment was placed in the expert
hands of Kent Machine Services who deal with all
range of equipment, from the heavy industrial to light
industry including medical.
The line configuration was to be duplicated between
the floors with a few peripheral pieces being removed,
the floor plan had to be identical. There was no
margin of error due to the limited space available.
The line layout and machine placement positions were
calculated and planned.
Friday 12th of December saw the start of the
de-commission.
Soundcraft dealt with all facility services removal. All
equipment was made ready to begin the move process
early Saturday morning.
The plan of moving the line from second to third
floor in a seven day window was completed by 5pm
Tuesday.
Soundcraft were back into production, proving the line
move had been successful on Wednesday morning,
2 days ahead of schedule.
The full project from start to finish was excellently
executed by all.
Soundcraft, the contracted support and the
AlternativeSMT and AdoptSMT team worked in perfect
harmony, which resulted in a fluid transition of the
surface mount production line from floor to floor.”
P.S. AlternativeSMT Limited has meanwhile
changed its name to AdoptSMT UK Ltd.
