If you are new at feeding Hummingbirds, it is not expensive or difficult; all you need
is a Hummingbird feeder, found at most stores. There are a few simple rules to follow.
1) In preparing Hummingbird nectar, the simplest and best food to put into the feeder is
diluted white table sugar. Do not use honey, fructose sugar, artificial sweeteners, red dyes,
or orange juice. The red coloring in the packages at the store is not necessary! Dilute one
part sugar with four parts water and boil. Let the solution cool and put into a bottle that
you can shake, and then pour into a clean feeder. Keep the nectar fresh by changing it at
least once a week. The Hummingbirds will stop feeding around the middle of September.
2) This is important! Feeders should be cleaned at least once a week. Bleach, diluted 1:20
with water, is a good disinfectant and cleaner. Be sure to rinse the clean feeder well with
water after cleaning and let it air dry. It helps to have two feeders, one for the Hummingbirds to use while one is being cleaned & dried.
3) To keep pesky ants out of your feeder, use a little vegetable oil or Vaseline on the wire
that connects your feeder to the holder. Finally, it is a misconception that feeding these
birds will make them dependent on humans for food. Feeders provide only a small part of
the Hummingbird's daily food needs. They require it most on the cold days in early spring
or when the female parent is feeding her young. Good luck, and enjoy the birds!
