"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.” -Norman MacLean, A River Runs Through It and Other Stories Special Advertising Section Down by the River T he Village of East Dundee is a picturesque community located along the eastern banks of the Fox River in Northeast Kane County. Its history dates back to the 1840s, when early set- tlers began to build their homes on the hills overlooking the river. The impressive structure that is known as Immanuel Luthern Church, was build in 1866. Allen Pinkerton, who made Dundee his home, is recognized as one of the founders of the United States Secret Service and he also served as the Chief Security Officer for President Lincoln. Following the tragedy of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, East Dundee became the home of Haeger Bricks, later known internationally as Haeger Potteries, and emerged as one of the largest suppliers of these now sought-after bricks. Just after the turn of the century, D'Angelo Natural Spring Water was founded in 1928 with the discovery of a local natural spring, and flourishes today as an East Dundee business. East Dundee is traversed by the Fox River Trail, a major pedestrian and bicycle artery that offers enthusiasts an opportunity to see the Fox Valley from Algonquin to Aurora. Initially used for trade purposes, the Chicago Northwestern Railroad operated until the early 1970s when the tracks were converted into what is now known as the Fox River Trail.
