A Message from the Executive Director
Welcome back to another school year!
We are looking forward to another busy and rewarding year
here at The Angel Foundation for Learning! You will find our
Calendar of Events for the 2014-15 year included in this
newsletter and we hope that you will mark the dates in your
calendar and join us!
Our first event is the annual Evening to Feed the Soul - Gala
Royale. Taking place on Friday, November 14 at the Riviera
Parque Banquet Hall, this year’s Gala evening will feature
Jennifer Valentyne of CityTV’s Breakfast Television as our
Master of Ceremonies and live entertainment by Juno Awardwinning performer Liberty Silver. It promises to be another
wonderful evening so gather your friends and colleagues and
book a table! We look forward to seeing you there!
As we begin the Year of Charity at the TCDSB, I ask that everyone keep The Angel Foundation for
Learning in mind as you plan your donations and fundraising efforts. We recognize that there are
many worthwhile charities vying for your fundraising dollars, but please remember - we are the
ONLY charity that exclusively serves students in the TCDSB.
The Angel Foundation for Learning is very fortunate to have many loyal donors that continue to
support our programs. However, the funding requests we receive continue to outpace our
available funds. We need your help! Please take a moment to visit our website at
www.angelfoundationforlearning.org to learn more about the programs and services we provide
for the students of the TCDSB and the many ways that you can support our work.
In honour of the Feast of the Guardian Angels on October 2, 2014, we invite all TCDSB
employees to help us nourish the bodies and minds of TCDSB students supported by The Angel
Foundation for Learning by participating in our Cents-Off campaign (more details below). It only
takes a few cents every other week to make a difference in students’ lives.
Everyday Angels Inspire Charity.
God Bless you always and forever,
President’s Message
Cents- Off program – it makes SENSE!
One of our potentially largest sources of income is the Cents-Off program for TCDSB staff. The
TCDSB has approximately 14,000 employees and ALL of them are eligible to participate in the
Cents-Off program.
How it Works
TCDSB employees simply complete a form that authorizes the TCDSB payroll department to
deduct the “cents” from their bi-weekly pay cheque and donate this amount to The Angel
Foundation for Learning (an official charity of the TCDSB). The maximum donation from any
single paycheque is 99 cents and the maximum donation amount in a year will be under $26!
The donation is tax deductible and the receipt appears right on your annual TCDSB T4 slip. I
On behalf of The Angel Foundation for
Learning’s Board of Directors and staff
members, I would like to take this
opportunity to welcome the TCDSB staff
back for another school year. I hope that
everyone enjoyed their summer holidays
and have come back with renewed
strength and motivation. Although the
summer months are behind us, a
colourful Fall is just around the corner,
so let’s all make the most of these
September days.
As this is the TCDSB's Year of Charity,
my hope is that everyone in our
community continues their commitment
to The Angel Foundation for Learning
this year. Your support is more
important than ever as we see an
increase to the requests that we receive
on behalf of students across the TCDSB.
I also hope that many of you will be
joining us at this year's Evening to Feed
the Soul - Gala Royale on November 14.
It will be a spectacular evening with
good food, great live entertainment and
an opportunity to bid on some fantastic
silent auction items. Tickets are selling
fast and we encourage everyone to
gather their friends and family together
for this wonderful evening – I hope to
see you there!
Thank you again for your support.
Whether it is through a donation,
volunteer hours or the purchase of an
event ticket, any support you give is
both welcomed and appreciated.
May this new school year bring renewed
enthusiasm and energy for all the work
we do.
God bless,
Nancy Murdocca, MSW RSW
President

Become eligible for random monthly prize draws!
As an added incentive, we do a monthly Random Draw for ALL Cents-Off participants. For the
months of June, July and August, winners received golf shirts that were donated by the RHB
Group for our annual Charity Golf Classic. Congratulations to: Pat Ryan (St. Leo), Lisa Mainella
(Social Work Services), Teresa Chung (International Education) and Nancy Paiva (St. Conrad). All
of the draw prizes are donated by our partners and the number of prizes distributed in any given
month depends on what we have received.
Complimentary lunch bags!
For the 2014-15 school year, the first 200 new Cents-Off sign-ups will receive a complimentary
“Be Nourished” lunch bag, courtesy of Be Nourished Canada.
For our existing Cents-Off members, we thank you for your continued support and we will be
drawing 200 names from our existing members list who will also receive a complimentary
“Be Nourished” lunch bag.
It does make SENSE to join the Cents-Off program - it is one of the easiest ways to support a
charity!
If you are a TCDSB employee but not enrolled in the Cents-off program, this would be a perfect
time to join, as we celebrate the TCDSB’s Year of Charity.
Please follow this link to join the Cents-off program.

We are off to a great beginning for this school year! We look forward to the continued support of
our many generous supporters and we also are excited to meet new faces this year! Here are
just some of the highlights from June-September 2014:
17th Annual Charity Golf Classic
The Angel Foundation for Learning’s 17th Annual Charity Golf Classic took place on July 3, 2014
and raised over $22,000!
The 18-hole scramble format tournament started with a barbeque lunch, followed by a fun-filled
day of golf and ended with a banquet dinner, prizes and raffle draws. Attendees had a chance to
meet and greet a couple of Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni, Gary Leeman and Mark Osbourne, and
Mark Giordano, Captain of the Calgary Flames. Golfers were then greeted at certain holes with
fun games and giveaways from our generous sponsors.

St. John Paul II Breakfast Program
On Monday, September 29, Breakfast Television showcased the Breakfast Program at
St. John Paul II. Chief of Police Bill Blair was also in attendance and spoke about the importance
of partnerships between communities and schools, as well as how school breakfast programs
serve the needs of their community youth. The visit was coordinated by St. John Paul II’s
principal, Michael Wetzel, along with his school’s Resource Office.
The nutrition program at St. John Paul II serves 175 students daily for breakfast. They increased
their program from one day a week last year to five days a week for this school year. On any
given morning, there are 50 students serving food on a rotating schedule who volunteer in the
program. Supported by a team of teachers, administrators and student volunteers, this program
is a real community-supported initiative.
Thank you to our supporters!
We are always grateful to our many supporters, donors and volunteers and wish that we could
thank every one of them in our newsletter! If you have photos or stories about The Angel
Foundation for Learning that you would like to share with us for a future newsletter, let us know!
Loretto Abbey donates $26,000
Congratulations and thank you to the students and staff of Loretto Abbey. For the second
consecutive year they donated all of their fundraising dollars to The Angel Foundation for
Learning. The money is directed to The Loretto Fund. The Loretto Sisters have a long history of
helping refugees and recent immigrants settle into their new life in Canada. The Loretto Fund is
administered by The Angel Foundation for Learning and exists to provide financial assistance to
TCDSB students who are newcomers to Canada.
Students with proof of arrival in Canada within the past five years may receive up to $150 per
school year. This money may be used to offset costs to participate in school events including, but
not limited to: leadership activities, orientation camps, sports events, retreats, field trips,
seminars and compliance with school dress code.
In the past two years, Loretto Abbey has raised over $46,000 for The Loretto Fund and they
announced that this year’s fundraising will once again be dedicated to The Angel Foundation for
Learning. We, along with the students that will benefit from this fund, are most appreciative!
Many of our schools were busy near the end of the last school year and we are so happy for their
hard work and support! Just some of the fundraising dollars we received:
 Cardinal Leger: $175
 St. Gabriel Me to We Committee: $250
 St. Gabriel Student Council: $1,500
 St. Rita Dress Down Day: $300
 St. Clement Dress down Day: $688.70
 Mother Cabrini: $165.30
 Francis Liebermann 30 Hour Famine:
 St. Michael’s Choir School: $400
$500
 Madonna Student Council Fundraising:
$1,000
 Prince of Peace: $80.85
 Regina Mundi Dress Down Days:
 St. Elizabeth of Seton Dress Down Day:
$1,633.46

Mary Anne O’Leary, 1947-2014
It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Mary Anne O’Leary on June 21,
2014. Following her retirement in 2001 from her position as a superintendent with the TCDSB,
Mary Anne continued to demonstrate her commitment to education.
From 2001-2003, Mary Anne was the first Executive Director employed by The Angel Foundation
for Learning. Even after going on to other employment, Mary Anne continued to be a strong
supporter of The Angel Foundation for Learning.
Those who attended our annual Fun Walk event are sure to remember Mary Anne welcoming
participants at the registration desk and handing out raffle prizes. Mary Anne will be
remembered for her strong support of students, colleagues and friends alike. Her beautiful smile
and warmth will be forever engraved in our memories.

December’s Virtue is Charity
Instead of toys, some children are wishing for food vouchers this Christmas. Some are dealing with
the illness or death of a family member. Others still are fighting for basic necessities like heat and

The Angel Foundation for Learning’s Social Work Emergency Fund helps students with these
urgent needs. Please give a Christmas donation to this fund today, and become a messenger of
charity bringing joy to our most needy.
