President’s Message A Message from the Executive Director Happy Easter to all and may the Risen Lord bless you with much happiness. Happiness is what we try to spread to the students of the TCDSB through our work at The Angel Foundation for Learning and none of this would be possible without your ongoing commitment and support. In March, we presented at two wonderful conferences - The Circling Our Angels with Hope conference for Grade 6 students and the Student Success conference. Both were great successes and we gained many new friends and Twitter followers. If you’re on Twitter, don’t forget to follow us at @AFLToronto to receive regular updates from our team. As part of our ongoing commitment to help TCDSB students succeed in their educational endeavours, we have again announced our line-up of bursaries and awards (the awards are for our elementary schools). We encourage all students to take some time to apply for the bursaries. We all know that post-secondary education can be quite expensive, and these bursaries and awards were created in order to help give students an equal chance to succeed. You can view all the available bursaries and awards by visiting this page. It is finally Spring and we are all waiting with anticipation for the first signs of new growth and renewal in the environment around us. Just as Christ was resurrected on Easter Sunday, all that has been dormant will come alive again with the warmth of the Spring air and sunshine. As a community, we are happy and excited that the College of Cardinals have elected His Holiness Pope Francis as the new leader of the worldwide Catholic community. We are positive that His Holiness will continue raising the global awareness of the poor and marginalized and continue to encourage everyone to support those in need in their own communities. We have had a busy month here at The Angel Foundation for Learning. Our annual Toronto Marlies Health Action Day on March 6 was a tremendous success and raised $10,000! Proceeds from this Our annual Marlies HAT hockey game was a great success, with over 5,000 students, parents and TCDSB staff filling Ricoh Coliseum. Participants cheered on our local Toronto Marlies hockey team as they defeated the Syracuse Crunch with a score of 6-3! Thank you to the schools that were able to participate and contribute to the $10,000 donation that Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) presented to The Angel Foundation for Learning. We also congratulate Lorraine Pinto, teacher at St. Edmund Campion, who is the first winner of our monthly Cents-Off draw. She is the recipient of three Cineplex movie tickets courtesy of Scotiabank. This new draw will take place at the end of each month for all TCDSB employees registered in the Cents-Off program. If you would like to join the Cents-Off program, please follow this link. As the warmer months approach, we have many activities planned and we hope to see you at some of our upcoming events listed below. With warmest regards, Marisa Celenza event directly benefit the TCDSB community through our four wings of support. Our 13th annual 5KM Community Fun Walk is right around the corner and will take place on Sunday, May 5, 2013. This is always a great community event that brings students, staff, and families out to the CEC to have some fun and fundraise for a great cause. We hope to see you there and help us tackle the challenges the students and families in our community face every day. Wishing you a most blessed Spring season, Nancy Murdocca, MSW RSW President The Angel Foundation for Learning “Believe in Angels” Mission Statement The Angel Foundation for Learning is a charitable organization that serves the needs of students of the TCDSB.
