A place like the Coalition, they definitely make the difference for a lot of people.” Melissa 2 our leaders BRENT TROTTER PRESIDENT / CEO Dear Friends: FY 2011-2012 was quite a noteworthy year for Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. Nearly 4,400 homeless men, women and children came through our doors on the road to a better life. We welcomed over 18,000 invaluable volunteers; celebrated our 25th year as a community asset; and took a giant leap forward on the longtime dream of building a new, residential facility for homeless men. We remain indebted to the individuals, corporations, organizations, government entities, and foundations throughout the community who have continued to invest in our mission. We could not do what we do without you. BILL WARREN CHAIRMAN As the year began, our Board of Directors approved a new Mission Statement to guide the organization for years to come. We benefited from the 22nd Annual Taste of the Nation, held the second Journey Home Breakfast, began to focus on major gifts and planned giving through a new Philanthropy Council, and held our first in-home receptions to raise awareness about the Coalition. APM Construction Corporation was selected by Orange County Government to build our upcoming two-story, residential Men’s Service Center (MSC); trailers and trees were removed; and a temporary parking strategy was put into place for construction. Excitement reined on February 10, 2012, as Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, past and present Board members, and other esteemed guests broke ground on the MSC. Just into the new fiscal year, exterior tilt wall panels were raised and the building took shape before our eyes. Completion is expected in late summer or early fall 2013. NBA All Star players, hardworking volunteers and national media descended on the Coalition this year to show us that NBA Cares; our Golf Challenge and Hearts of Gold events proved very successful; and the Coalition’s largest-ever fundraising initiative, the $12 million Journey Home Campaign, was readied for launch. Needless to say, we couldn’t achieve all that we do without our hardworking, committed staff and legion of selfless volunteers. We are proud of their many accomplishments this year and invite you to learn more in the pages that follow. Sincerely, Brent A. Trotter President/CEO Bill L. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, A GROUP OF CHURCHES, BUSINESSES, AND OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS JOINED FORCES TO HELP THE HOMELESS MEN IN DOWNTOWN ORLANDO. TODAY, WE HAVE GROWN INTO THE LARGEST PROVIDER OF HOMELESS SERVICES IN ALL OF CENTRAL FLORIDA, SERVING MEN, WOMEN AND FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN. AND OUR STORY CONTINUES... Bridget “The Coalition is a safe environment for kids and the staff truly helps you. If you utilize the resources available, you’ll leave and won’t ever need to go back.” 6 FY 2011-2012 WAS ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE YEARS IN OUR HISTORY. WE READIED THE LAUNCH OF OUR LARGEST-EVER our 2012 FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN AND BROKE GROUND ON THE MEN’S SERVICE CENTER. AND THAT’S JUST THE BEGINNING. 4,358 PEOPLE RECEIVED HELP FROM THE COALITION IN FY 2011-2012 48% of people we served were men. 2,154 PEOPLE 336 27% were women. 25% were children. Our intake and case managers, resident assistants, receptionists, children’s services providers, victims’ advocates, and program administrators work tirelessly to guide clients toward independence. The kitchen and facility maintenance staffs are indispensible to our ability to provide meals and safe shelter to hundreds of people each day. Integral to the front line staff ’s ability to assist clients are the handful dedicated to managing volunteer and in-kind services, raising monies, communicating the Coalition’s message of hope, managing the organization’s finances and human resources, and handling agency administration. OUR CLIENTS OUR VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are definitely the Coalition’s heartbeat. During FY 2011-2012, a record number of over 18,678 volunteers contributed 65,146 hours of their time and talent to our organization. Wonderful individuals completed administrative tasks, taught Art By Coalition Children (ABCs) classes, assisted in the daycare, sponsored activities for adults and children, lent a hand at Coalition events, represented the Coalition in the community, and served meals. Groups from near and far participated in 329 projects, such as landscaping, painting, tutoring, mentoring, and organizing goods. OUR DONORS When many people hear the word “homeless,” a vivid picture comes to mind of solely homeless men. They, however, are but one segment of the population we serve. Every day, in fact, we at the Coalition help many single women and families with children. They represent our family, friends and neighbors, and are the growing face of homelessness. They are people who never dreamed they would be at this crossroads in life. Whether they invest in us through monetary donations, in-kind goods and services or by supporting special events, donors enable the Coalition to provide hope and help to clients as they move towards independence. This year, individuals, businesses, foundations, community and faith-based organizations, and other private sector sources were responsible for donating over 65 percent of our financial and in-kind resources. Defying stereotypes, hard-working residents take advantage of the multitude of services that will help them regain self-sufficiency. Through staff and partners such as OCPS LifeStrides Program; Goodwill Industries of Central Florida, Inc.; Lakeside Behavioral Healthcare; and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, Downtown Branch; the Coalition offers residents both hope and a hand up to a better life. Our newly launched, three-year Journey Home Campaign presents unique ways to provide life-changing support to single adults and families with children and to have a positive impact on the entire community. Donors can make a long-term commitment to the Coalition through a variety of naming opportunities, a planned gift, or investing in us in perpetuity with endowment funding. AT THE COALITION, LILLY’S MOTHER WAS ABLE TO WORK TOWARDS INDEPENDENCE, WHILE LEAVING HER IN THE SAFE HANDS OF OUR ONSITE DAYCARE STAFF. ON FEBRUARY 10, 2012, WE BROKE GROUND ON THE NEW MEN’S SERVICE CENTER. THIS RESIDENTIAL FACILITY WILL POSITION US TO BETTER SERVE HOMELESS MEN. 11 ONLY A SMALL PART OF WHAT WE DO INVOLVES SHELTER AND FOOD. THERE IS SO MUCH MORE INVOLVED IN GUIDING INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILES FROM HOMELESSNESS TO HOPE. CASE MANAGEMENT Case managers work one-onone with clients to develop an individualized plan and serve as a guide on the journey to self-sufficiency. Whether one requires educational opportunities, job skills training, life skills information, childcare, social services, or other assistance to move forward, guidance and counsel are available. A total of 2,532 clients benefited from case management services this year in our Center for Women and Families (CWF), Women’s Residential and Counseling Center (WRCC), community housing and substance abuse recovery programs. We are thrilled to report that, once our new Men’s Service Center opens in 2013, the Coalition’s single, male clients will be afforded this critically needed service. “I am so grateful for our case manager, Lidia,” shared Adriana, who now lives in her own apartment with her son. “She understood me and my situation. The support we received was incredible!” CHILDREN’S SERVICES SUBSTANCE ABUSE RECOVERY With over 275 children and their parents in our midst each day this year, we strived to create an atmosphere of normalcy and provide them a sense of accomplishment. Seventy youngsters took part in our fully-licensed daycare and Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program. About 80 budding artists participated in the 10 sessions of the Art By Coalition Children (ABCs) Program, learning a variety of mediums from professional artists. This marked the fourth year of help from artist Catherine Cross, thanks to a grant from Disney and the Orlando Museum of Art. our programs VICTIMS OF CRIME Many clients - particularly women and children - become vulnerable to homelessness as victims of crime, such as domestic violence. Those who were victims receive specialized counseling and support group services at both of our campuses through funding by the state’s Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Program. The First Steps Substance Abuse Recovery Program helps addicted clients return to sobriety and self-sufficiency. This intensive, residential program offers support groups, life skills classes, educational and vocational training, and other services. It is supported by 12step recovery strategies and is comprised of components for men and women. COMMUNITY HOUSING PROGRAM The Coalition’s two-fold Community Housing Program - Scattered Site and Housing Now - helps clients who qualify secure affordable rental housing and provides them rental assistance, case management, and supportive services. The men’s program has an emergency shelter phase located in separate quarters in the Men’s Pavilion. In addition, a transitional housing component provides living space in our nine An average of 48 new crime on-site apartments. Individuals and families are eligible for Scattered Site as long as they can prove they have had an income for the past 90 days and at least $1,000 in savings. This year, 10 individuals and 29 families with 57 children took part in this one-year program. Until recently, Dwayne was an addict whose life had spiraled out of control. He has since graduated from the Coalition’s First Steps Substance Abuse Recovery Program and has been clean and sober for over a year. “The program works… I am living proof of that,” he said. Rod lost his job of 10 years, ultimately putting him on the street. Regaining employment, he moved into an apartment through the Scattered Site Housing Program. He received case management and rental assistance as he transitioned back into the community. Three-year-old Matthew came to the Coalition with educational and developmental deficiencies, along with behavioral issues. Through our onsite daycare, he learned to speak in full sentences, identify colors, and follow a structured schedule. After being under the thumb of an abusive husband, Kim came to the Coalition seeking help. Staff met regularly with Kim to create a self-sufficiency plan, which included addressing the trauma of domestic violence and related esteem issues. Housing Now is a rapid rehousing program that targets newly-homeless families with dependent children. The program helped 113 families this year with a total of 268 kids. 12 our events A FEW TIMES EVERY YEAR, WE COME TOGETHER WITH OUR SUPPORTERS TO CELEBRATE – TO ENJOY A GREAT CONCERT OR GOLF A FEW HOLES. IN THE PROCESS, WE RAISE HOPE. HEARTS OF GOLD The Coalition went country this year at the 19th Annual Hearts of Gold on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Hard Rock Live. Nearly 1,000 people kicked up their boots to the sounds of Grammy-nominated Little Big Town in concert. Emceed by Shadow and Bobby Mitchell from K 92.3 Orlando’s Country, the successful event raised $143,000 for our programs and services. GOLF CHALLENGE The evening featured VIP receptions, a fabulous silent auction of unique items, a touching client video, chance drawings, a specially-designed t-shirt, and our first-ever “Text to Give” opportunity, which offered a novel way for attendees to pledge a contribution from their phones. Major sponsors were Walt Disney World, Baker Hostetler, Dellecker Wilson King McKenna Ruffier and Sos, Greenberg Traurig, Hilton Grand Vacations, the Orlando Magic, Tupperware Brands, OUC, and TWS Marketing Group. Our television partner was WFTV Channel 9. Twenty-seven golfers didn’t let a rain break stop them from finishing the Doug Spencer 16th Annual Golf Challenge on Friday, April 20, 2012, raising over $64,000 to benefit the Coalition. The event took place at Falcon’s Fire Golf Club in Kissimmee. Again this year, the top fundraiser was event namesake and chair, Doug Spencer, who single-handedly raised $12,778 for his 96-hole afternoon. Other major fundraisers included Brian Wilson, Mike Schiappa, Tony King, Brian King, and Amy Moline, the day’s only female golfer and event co-chair. Corporate sponsors were Hilton Grand Vacations and Dellecker Wilson King McKenna Ruffier and Sos. Other sponsors included Pioneer Construction Service, Spencer Consulting Services; Bright House Networks and Tews Company. 13 TASTE OF THE NATION The Coalition was honored to again be a local beneficiary for Share our Strength’s 22nd Annual Taste of the Nation® Orlando, which took place on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at the Orlando World Center Marriott. JOURNEY HOME BREAKFAST The hugely successful night raised $167,500 to fight childhood hunger, netting the Coalition about $49,000. Over 2,000 people enjoyed delicacies prepared by 36 of Central Florida’s leading restaurants, wine and other beverages, live music, a “throw-down” cooking competition, a silent auction presented by Neiman Marcus, chance drawings, and a live auction. Emceed for the second year by DJ’s Scott McKenzie of MIX 105.1 and Paco of 1059 SUNNY FM, the evening was presented by Darden Restaurants, Inc. and organized by a volunteer steering committee representing a variety of local businesses and organizations. The Honorary Chairman was City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. Our second Journey Home Breakfast was held on November 14, 2011 at the Ballroom at Church Street, with nearly 300 people attending. The event provided an opportunity for those already invested in the Coalition to invite others to consider supporting the agency’s mission. Former clients shared their emotional stories of hope and a touching Journey Home video, produced by Foster Productions, was shown. Each attendee received a pottery bowl handcrafted by Stella Tagliavore and local artists, as well as a colorful “thank you” card presented in person by several of our daycare youngsters. The event resulted in 11 additional members of our Journey Home Society and raised $173,000 in one-time gifts and pledges for the Coalition’s programs and services. 14 WE ARE EXTREMELY GRATEFUL TO THE INDIVIDUALS, our contributors BUSINESSES, FOUNDATIONS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND OTHERS JULY 1, 2011 – JUNE 30, 2012 SERVE THOSE IN CRISIS.
