OLL Times - Winter 2016 - Our Lady of Lourdes School
OLL Winter Newsletter January 2016 We came back to school on January 4, 2016 from a nice Christmas vacation. January 16th our 2nd graders made their First Reconciliation. First Reconciliation Excitement! It was an exciting day for the second graders on January 16th. They received First Reconciliation with Fr. Frank. Afterwards they went downstairs to the Church Hall where they received their certificates (and cotton candy). The children put a lamb in a farm to represent that now they are followers of Jesus. By: Daniel S. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK January ended with the start of Catholic Schools Week on Sunday the 31st. It began with 9:30 Mass led by Fr. Frank. The Murray family gave some inspiring speeches about why Catholic school is so important. All the Faculty attended and many student and their families came too. Then it was on to Open House in the school. We had a great crowd at our Catholic Schools Week Open House!!! Many families came. Each grade displayed their work for all to see from the School Hall to the 3rd floor. My grade, the 4th grade, did a project on the National Parks. My group had Mesa Verde, Daniel’s group did Fort McHenry, Tess’ group did Yellowstone National Park, Liam’s group did Mt. Rushmore and Lucia’s group did Gates to the Arctic. The Art Club displayed their beautiful artwork, a cardinal in a tree on canvas. There were so many great projects done by every class. There were raffles, coffee, juice, cookies, donuts……………..it was so much fun that people didn’t want it to end! By: Peter S. Monday, Feb. 1st was Faith Painting Day. It was an exciting event. Mrs. Schubart Made three pictures, a heart, a cross and a peace sign. Each class picked a picture and every student got to paint a part of the picture. My class, 4-2 Mrs. Celiberti’s, did the heart, Mrs. Goodwin’s class, 4-1 did the cross and Mrs. Powers’ class, 5th grade, did the peace sign. The Middle School chose their own theme. The finished pictures are hanging up in all the classrooms. By: Lucia M. LIVING in SPACE On Tuesday, February 2nd, Mr. Angler from the Cradle of Aviation came to visit us. He told us how people live in space. He explained how they eat, sleep and use the bathroom. It seems really tricky living in space, the food has to be put in little containers. Mr. Angler brought a space suit to show us. Some students even got to try it on. It was very interesting! By: Daniel S. Wednesday February 3rd, was Sports Day for grade 6, 7, & 8th with the 5th grade as spectators, Game Day for K, 1, 2, 3, & 4th, and Wacky Wednesday for Nursery & Pre-K. Everybody had a lot of fun! Thursday, February 4th was Dress Down Day. We also had Mystery Guest Reader Day. Each grade invited a guest to read a story for their class. It was a lot of fun! Then in the afternoon each class watched a movie. My grade, 4-2, watched the movie, Home. I bet every grade had a great time! By: Daniel S. Friday, February 5th was supposed to be our All Saints Day Celebration, hosted by the 1st grade with an early dismissal. However, Mother Nature had other plans and we ended up having a snow day. The All Saints Day Celebration took place on March 17th. The 1st graders did a wonderful job! Groundhog DAY Groundhog day was February 2nd and Malverne Mel did not see his shadow, and neither did Punxsutawney Phil. So, guess we’ll have an early spring! Feast of St. Blaise The Feast of St. Blaise, February 3rd is the blessing of the throats. He is the Patron Saint of illnesses of the throat. The whole school went to church to get our throats blessed. Fr. Frank, our new priest, Fr. Andres Fernanadez, Mrs. Murphy and Mrs. Malone blessed our throats using candles and saying a prayer. By: Lucia M. SUPER BOWL UPSET On Sunday, February 7, 2016, The Denver Broncos pulled off a huge upset against the Carolina Panthers. The score was 24-10, with the Broncos winning. The MVP of Super Bowl 50 was Von Miller, who is a defensive end for the Broncos. He had 3 sacks, and he made Cam Newton fumble the ball twice. It was Payton Manning’s last game because he recently announced his retirement. It was the Panthers worse loss of the season, even though they had only 2 losses. By: Peter S. On Wednesday, February 10th we entered the season of Lent. The school went to services at church and received ashes. Lent begins the 40 days of fasting and prayer in order for us to prepare for Easter. On Thursday, February 11th we celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes by going to Mass. This is a very special day for all of us because she is the Patron Saint of our school. February is American Heart Month. On Friday, February 12th, we had a dress down day and we wore red. The 14th was Valentine’s Day, which started our Presidents’ Week vacation. Fourth Grade Follows in the Footsteps of God On March 4th, my fourth grade class led the First Friday Mass. The theme was “Following in the Footsteps of God.” Emma R., Esther G., Brianna B., and Paige Z. showed that sharing God’s love and praying are two ways to follow God’s footsteps. Father Frank suggested that being kind and merciful and spreading God’s word are a few other ways we can be just like Jesus. Patrick C., Liam H., Eoghan W., and I were the altar servers. Daniel S., was the lector. I have to give credit to the chorus because they helped show the theme through their songs. Thank you to Ms. Celiberti and Father Frank for a wonderful Mass. By: Peter S. On Friday March 11th, our school performed the Live Stations of the Cross. It was a beautiful and moving event. Thank you to all who performed and to Fr. Frank, Mrs. Murphy and everyone who helped put on such a great and holy reenactment. We’ll be back in the Spring with more OLL news. Have a Blessed Easter!
