Stage 1 had a wonderful opportunity of going on an excursion to
Sofia P of KR who was selected as a prize-winner from the City of Canterbury’s School Poster
Competition on ‘Plastic bags are rubbish’. For her efforts, Sofia received a $25 Dymocks gift
voucher.
Well done Sofia, a terrific effort!
Stage 1 had a wonderful opportunity of going on an excursion to Vaucluse House as
part of their HSIE studies, ‘Families, Past and Present’. The Year 1 and 2 staff and
students had a fantastic experience on this excursion. Thank you to Mrs Papas for
organising this event.
On Wednesday 29 October the school joined Year 6 to celebrate the annual Year 6 Fun
Day. The aim of the day is for students in Years K – 5 to take part in fun activities
costing them between 50c to $2 to participate. Approximately $1200 was raised on the
day. This money went towards the Year 6 gift to the school.
Last Friday the students and staff wore red to school as they participated in ‘The Day
for Daniel’ organised by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. $200 was raised by our
school community to support the foundation. The students learnt about child safety
and to empower themselves to ‘recognise, react and report’ in situations if they feel
something is not right. Thank you to Ms Philokyprou for organising this event.
As we head in to warmer weather it is a good time to reinforce our sun safe message.
This includes wearing a school hat before school as well as during recess and lunch.
Class teachers frequently remind students about our ‘No Hat, No Play’ school rule.

Thank you to those parents who attended our forums on Thursday and yesterday in the Library.
We appreciate your time, as we acknowledge how busy everyone is at this time of the year.
When analysing the evaluation forms, it seems that the sessions were very successful, with
parents able to see how the new English and Maths Syllabus is being implemented across all
stages within the school. Thank you to Mrs Mitropoulos, Mrs Riley, Ms Bain, Mrs Drury, Mrs
Smith, Ms Withers and Mrs Vajdevski for your comprehensive presentations and to the parents
for your considered questions. You will find on our website a link to useful activities and
reference points for you to use at home in relation to the two forums.
If your child has been absent you will need to provide them with a written note upon their return
to school. The note should explain the absence. Missing school means your child misses out on
vital information and maintaining learning routines. This can result in a loss of confidence and
missing out on forming vital friendships.
If a child is late for school, a parent must come into the Office with the child to explain the
reason. As a school we have to adhere to strict processes, mandated by the DEC, regarding
student absences.
If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school regularly, you might like to talk to
the school counsellor or the school principal.
If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, including arriving late or leaving early,
please either tell your child’s teacher or the administration assistant at our school, or explain the
reason by phone, email or written note as soon as possible.
Applications to sit for a placement examination in Year 7 at a selective high school in
2016 will be open to parents of students in Year 5 from 14 October to 17 November
2014.
Multiple copies of an application information booklet will be sent to public schools
around 14 October 2014 for distribution to parents along with a template letter to
parents that can be used by schools to ask parents to express their interest in
applying for selective high school placement for their children.
The application information booklet will also be available on the High Performing
Students Unit’s website at: www.schools.nsw.edu.au/shsplacement.
Parents without internet access or who cannot use a computer have been told they
can apply at a public library. Parents with disabilities that preclude the use of a

Tony Burke Christmas/New Year Card Competition
Every Year, Tony Burke, our local federal member of parliament runs a Christmas card
designing competition for schools in the local electorate. The eight (8) winning designs
are chosen from these schools and will be professionally printed in card style and
include the designing student’s first name, year and school. These then become the
cards that Mr Burke sends out during the holiday period. The winning students will also
receive a book voucher for $50. The ‘overall competition’ winner will also receive a $50
book voucher together with a $200 prize book voucher for their school.
Guidelines for the entries are as follows:

Students should submit their designs on A4 size paper for the artwork this year for Mr
Burke’s:
• Christmas Cards
• New Year Card
• Lunar New Year Card (Year of the Sheep)

Students can choose to design artwork for any of the above cards. Students should
make sure their name, class and the name of their school is clearly marked on the
back of each entry.

Parent tips!
What is a homonym?
Let's face it, English can be a crazy language. Take homonyms,
for example. These are words that are identical in pronunciation
and spelling but have different meanings. This homonym list will
provide some clarity.
