Prices: Single copies £1.70, subscription to four issues £6.20. Please make cheques/POs payable to "Chartwatch" and cross them "a/c payee". You can pay by
TRANSCASH or GiroBank transfer, but this is expensive! Our Giro account number is 28 807 6508. There is a 13 euros charge for the sender and a £10 bank fee
charged to us which we have to pass on to the customer. Please do not send coins or stamps as payment.
European subscribers can subscribe for £13.50 (air mail only). Individual copies cost £3.40. These subscription rates also apply to the Republic of Ireland. Please
remember that we can no longer accept Irish postal orders or Eurocheques.
Other overseas subscribers: Please send us £11.50 (surface mail) or £18.00 (airmail). Single copies cost £2.90 (surface mail) or £4.50 (air mail). If you pay by
cheque drawn on a bank outside the UK, please add an extra £10 to cover bank charges; this applies particularly to US readers!
Giro transfer: Our Giro account number is 28 807 6508. Please note that Girobank is now charging £10 for international Giro transfers. Unfortunately, this must be
passed on to our overseas customers. Because the UK is not part of the euro-zone, this also applies to customers from the European Union.
PayPal: You can order Chartwatch over the Internet using our PayPal account, which means you can pay by credit card. This is especially useful to overseas
readers. Please see our website for order forms: www.chartwatch.co.uk.
PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS, AND THE ISSUE NUMBER OR DATE FROM WHICH THE SUBSCRIPTION IS TO RUN.
Back numbers: Back numbers to all issues are available at £1.70 per copy. The CHARTWATCH yearly summaries are also available: 1983 - £1.40, 1984 - £1.50,
1985-1994 - £2.00, 1995-2008 - £2.50, 1961-1967 - £1.20. The index for issues 36-55 costs £1.50 and for 1-35 £1. To ensure delivery within 28 days, please restrict
your order to no more than ten of any of the above. Because not all back issues are in stock, it may be necessary to send orders in several packages as they become
available. For overseas orders, please enclose an extra £3.50 postage and handling charge per issue for air mail delivery (1.90p for surface mail), and if payment is
in foreign currency, an extra £10 for bank exchange costs. If you pay by a cheque drawn on a bank outside the UK, please add an extra £10 to cover bank charges.
Note that pdf versions of a growing number of back issues are available from www.chartwatch.co.uk for free download.
NOTES TO CONTRIBUTORS: CHARTWATCH is always pleased to receive contributions (and photographs) from readers. Please keep articles as brief as
possible. A page is about 1500 words, and anything longer will have to be of exceptional interest to be included. We reserve the right to edit any material submitted.
We can't publish copyright material, so articles must be all your own work. Please credit chart or statistic sources, and retain a copy of your article (or enclose a
SAE if you want your article returned). Typewritten manuscripts or manuscripts on disc are preferred. You can submit articles by email to [email protected]
or [email protected]. Word format files are preferred, but we can also handle text files. Contributors get a free subscription to the next four issues only. Free issues
are distributed at the cheapest postage rate possible - readers wanting to receive their free copies at First Class or Air Mail will have to contribute the difference in
postage rates.
Please provide copy for the next CHARTWATCH by the end of September 2014. Copyright CHARTWATCH 2014 valid for the next fifty years. Users of the
CHARTWATCH sales-related points system and its underlying principle should cite CHARTWATCH as its originator (ref: Hancock, J.M. & Rawlings, N.D.

CHARTWATCH 107

Decade 2004-2013
Rihanna, of course, stays top of the rankings with Lady Gaga, now well past her peak, in second. The top ten does show
some sign of change, though, with Justin Timberlake and Coldplay dropping out to be replaced by David Guetta and Katy
Perry. There was some suggestion that Adele might have been able to overtake Take That in 2013 but she didn't release
anything - it may happen in 2014, though. The hottest candidate to join them appears to be Bruno Mars if he can have a
good year in 2014. Rihanna first charted in 2005 and so we can start to see the beginning of her decline. 2005-14 may be her
peak period, although if she manages to keep scoring well into 2015 she may be able to extend that. From 2016, though, we
may start to see falls in her aggregate. Remarkably Rihanna now has an all-time points aggregate that is higher than Queen
or Abba and looks likely to overtake Rod Stewart and Elton John any time. Is Madonna in her sights? - well, she's still 6,000
pts ahead and a moving target but it's something to keep an eye on. Overtaking Michael Jackson and becoming the UK's
fave black artist is more possible.

Acts Dropping Below 1,000 pts in 2013
Most acts dropping below 1,000 pts in 2013 were the class of 2003 or thereabouts, but we lost one major act in REM, who
had been over 1,000 since 1991. Also pre-dating the noughties was R. Kelly.

Acts Who Could Drop Below 1,000 pts in 2013
As usual a mixed bag in this list. It wouldn't be surprising to see Diddy or Ludacris surviving but most of the rest look
doomed because of the points needed. Not sure about Faithless but they don't seem to be active at present. Maybe interesting
that Faithless outlasted Dido.

Weighted Lists
Emeli Sande emerges as the strongest contender in the weighted lists followed by One Direction although Bruno Mars also
looks in a strong position. Emeli will actually have to prove herself in 2014, not having done anything significant in 2013.
Adele's star is also waning and she will also need to seize the day in 2013 to realise her apparent potential.

State Of The Acts At The Beginning Of 2014
David Guetta and Katy Perry are well placed to make further inroads into the top ten in 2014 but the big battle
will be for the 10th position: Bruno Mars only needs to outscore Kings of Leon by 1 pt to make 10th, while
Justin Timberlake and Kanye West also have realistic chances. Calvin Harris may also be worth looking out for.
Adele only needs 31pts to go third.

Well Spotted
Listening to the superb Chess Records anthology A Complete Introduction To Chess (2010), I noticed there was a track by
the blues singer and harmonica player Sonny Boy Williamson called Nine Below Zero. The Internet tells me that the song
was also recorded by Muddy Waters. I remembered that Bob Dylan had recorded a song called Outlaw Blues on his
Bringing It All Back Home album from 1965 in which the chorus included the lines:
Ain't it hard to stumble
And land in some funny lagoon?
Ain't it hard to stumble
And land in some muddy lagoon?
When it's nine below zero
And three o'clock in the afternoon.
Then there is a British bliues band called Nine Below Zero formed in London in 1977, originally as Stan's Blues Band.
They changed their name in 1979 prompted by manager Mickey Modern, and named themselves after the Sonny Boy
Williamson song. Knowing Dylan’s love of blues music, it is more than likely that Dylan knew the song and borrowed from
the lyrics. Other than these references to the temperature there seems to be no other similarities in the songs.

Eurovision 2014
The 2014 Eurovision Song Contest was held in Copenhagen after Emmelie de Forest's win in 2013. The contest saw the first
final appearances of two countries: Montenegro (formerly of Serbia and Montenegro) and San Marino. It has to be said I
was surprised that San Marino hadn't been there before but I suppose I was thinking of that other miniscule state, Monaco
(San Marino is apparently the smallest country in the world). The contest was hosted by Lise Rønne, Nikolaj Koppel and
Pilou Asbæk - some may remember Pilou as Kasper Juul in Borgen. As well as Montenegro and San Marino's contribution
the competition was noteworthy for the big win by Austria's Thomas Neuwirth, performing as Conchita Wurst and the
concomitant outpouring of support. It's worth pointing out that whereas Conchita is a Neuwirth's drag queen alter ego, Dana
International, who invites comparison, is actually transgender.

Aggregate Percentage Points and Biggest Song For Each Country
Slow movement here as ever, but one notable change is the gradual subsidence of Israel, overtaken by The Netherlands and
Denmark in this list. Armenia and Hungary made some progress lower down the list. Probably the main point to watch is
whether Sweden, who have done so well recently, overtakes Ireland (and perhaps even France) in 2015, which would be
pretty seismic.

Average Points Per Contest
Perhaps surprisingly given Azerbaijan's relative failure in 2014 this list is also pretty static although Italy drop off pretty
badly while Armenia rise. Austria made only small progress as they've been in so many finals.

Top 5 Countries 2010-2014
Best Performances In 2013
Sweden move to the top of this list and, with Denmark also
in there and Germany at 6th there is clearly a comeback by
the Western countries underway.
Sweden are in this list for the third year, but Austria
unsurprisingly take the crown this year.

Competing Versions of
the Same Song or Tune
on the Australian (New
South Wales) Hit Parade
by
Rob
Coulson
In the New South Wales charts, rival performances by separate artists, when considered of roughly equal
popularity, were given the same placing as if the discs were double A-sides. The survey began on 7 Jan 1956, but
the Top 20 or a shorter list may have existed at an earlier date, so the highest positions and total weeks on chart do
not take account of this for the first five entries.

Australian Act
2
The Australian Top 20 began in Jan 1956. It appears that the chart compiled by David Kent, contained some
element of airplay by disc jockeys because one song became a Top 20 hit without ever being released in Australia
(17 Nov 56 It’s Yours – De Castro Sisters, HP: 15; Wks: 5). This was not owing to lack of an Aussie outlet since
its American label RCA had several other hits that charted around this time. The chart became a Top 40 in Mar
1958. Records on the national chart tended to yo-yo up and down as they peaked in sales/airplay separate weeks in
different states.
Strangely, between 1958 and 1962 inclusive, the NSW Top 40 charted in different positions actual double A-sided
tracks by the same artists with the following exceptions:

Top Acts From Talent
Shows
British television is advertising already for its autumn season, and the Saturday night talent/reality show The XFactor has already been making the news because of Cheryl Cole’s return as a judge. This prompted me to look
at talent shows and how well the acts discovered have fared in chart terms, as opposed to acts discovered by
record company A&R men and traditional talent scouts. The following are the most successful acts derived
from television or radio talent shows (scored by the 2010 Chartwatch scoring system). This is a more extensive
version of a short list we published in CW 99 which was also headed by Girls Aloud although at that time
Showaddywaddy were second in the list.

Most Consecutive No.1
Singles by Record Label
There was much hurrah in Music Week when Interscope recently achieved three consecutive number one singles, which was
reported as being the first time the feat had been achieved this century (or if you really want to push the boat out, this
millennium) – though someone seems to have forgotten Syco’s achievement in 2011. This is a feat achieved much more
regularly in the past, when there were fewer record labels and singles spent longer at number one. However, it is not a feat
achieved that often, as the list below shows. It will be interesting to compare this list with number ones from the Forties.

Year By Year 1941
It’s difficult to imagine now what the music scene was like in 1941. The War was in its third year, and it began with
London reeling from the devastating bombing on 29 Dec 1940. With U-boats plaguing ship convoys, goods were becoming
scarce and rationing was introduced: initially with clothes on 2 June and a points scheme introduced on 1 Dec. For the war
there were successes: battles over Ethiopia, Somalia (27 Mar) and Iran (25 Aug) were fought and won, and the German
flagship the Bismarck was sunk (27 May). But there were also failures: the British warships HMS Hood (24 May) and HMS
Ark Royal (14 Nov) were sunk, and the war widened. Germany overran Yugoslavia and Greece (6 Apr) and attacked Russia
(22 Jun), and the Japanese entered the war by attacking the American fleet stationed in Pearl Harbor in Hawaii (6 Dec) and
invading Malaya (8 Dec), the Phillippines (10 Dec) and Hong Kong (25 Dec). With most men conscripted to the services,
with the exception of those craftsmen and professionals in reserve occupations (like miners, bakers, farmers) and most
women now working in factories or on the land, the record buying public would have been very different from what it is
today: predominantly female and mature.
From a chart statistician's point of view, the charts seem to be dominated by a handful of big acts. Only 28 different acts
scored more than a hundred points, compared to 27 in 1940 and 173 in 2013. The charts were also stagnant, with singles
charting for weeks. In 1941, there were 59 singles that scored a hundred or more points (down from 69 in 1940) whereas 98
singles achieved the feat in 2013.

exceeded, it has been matched by Oasis in 1996, and Adele
and Bruno Mars in 2011 (though the charts were much
longer, of course).
Surprisingly, the Ink Spots biggest hit is one that is not very
well known these days. Scoring over a thousand points in a
year for a single is a rarely achieved feat, achieved by only
the following five singles (as far as we know):

1941 was a big year for Deanna Durbin: she married her
first husband, assistant film director Vaughn Paul.
Deanna’s film career continued in 1941 with Nice Girl and
It Started With Eve, but when producer Joe Pasternak left
Universal for MGM, Deanna refused to appear in They
Lived Alone, even though Henry Koster, who had directed
most of her films, was directing. The film was never made,
and Deanna’s film career was on hold until Feb 1942.
In 1941, Deanna was one of very few acts to replace
themselves at number 1. The full list is:
Date
The 1941 charts seem to be full of missing hits – songs that
we all might have thought would have made their first chart
appearance. One of these is White Christmas, which Bing
recorded for a Christmas Day broadcast in 1941. It would
be another year before that song made its first chart entry.
Outside of recording, Bing starred in his own show for the
American Forces Radio, which began in 1941. Bing and
Bob Hope had started their series of Road films in 1940
with Road To Singapore. The follow-up, Road To Zanzibar
followed in 1941.
In any other year, a score in excess of 3,000 points would
have secured the no.1 spot. In fact, Bing halved his score
compared to 1940, yet still managed the 7th highest yearly
total we have ever recorded. He ‘only’ achieved four
number ones, whereas he had seven in 1940. His 1941
score was the highest ever for a non-winning act: does that
make him the biggest loser of all time?

In addition to the hits listed above, Bud Flanagan scored his
first hit without Chesney Allen. It was a double A-side duet
with Frances Day: But In The Morning, No/It’s D’Lovely,
which reached no.25 and charted for two weeks.
It’s a little bizarre to have had four consecutive no.3
records, but is it a unique event? We all know about
consecutive no.1 records. The Beatles achieved eleven
from From Me To You to Yellow Submarine/Eleanor Rigby,
and a further six from All You Need Is Love to The Ballad
Of John And Yoko. The Spice girls achieved six from
Wannabe to Too Much. Westlife also achieved six from
Swear It Again to My Love. Take That also achieved six
from Sure to Shine (but with a long period out of the charts
in between). Elvis Presley achieved four from It's Now Or
Never to Surrender and a further five from (Marie's The
Name) His Latest Flame/Little Sister to Return To Sender.
The Rolling Stones achieved five from It's All Over Now to
Get Off Of My Cloud. B*Witched achieved four from C'Est
La Vie to Blame It On The Weatherman. Geri Halliwell
also achieved four from Mi Chico Latino to It's Raining
Men. I’ve not considered collaborations, but I should
mention that the Shadows also achieved four in a row (with
or without Cliff Richard) from Next Time/Bachelor Boy to
Foot Tapper.
Achieving four consecutive no.2 hits is even more difficult:
I am unable to find a single example. Tom Jones (I'll Never
Fall In Love Again to Delilah), Sweet (Hell Raiser to
Teenage Rampage), Darts (Come Back My Love to It's
Raining), Boyzone (Isn't It A Wonder to Baby Can I Hold
You/Shooting Star), George Michael (Star People to

By 1940 Judy was a big star in Hollywood and appeared in
three films: Andy Hardy Meets Debutante, Strike Up The
Band (the film version of the musical) and Little Nellie
Kelly. The latter was her first serious role in which she
played both a mother and her daughter. In 1941 she starred
in a further three films: Ziegfeld Girl, Life Begins For Andy
Hardy and Babes On Broadway.
Judy’s personal life was beginning its spiral into chaos: her
first romance was with bandleader Artie Shaw, and was
devastated when he eloped with actress Lana Turner in
early 1940. She became engaged to David Rose (the
songwriter who wrote The Stripper in 1958), who was
married at the time to actress and singer Martha Raye, and
MGM forced the couple to wait until Rose’s divorce came
through. The couple married on 27 Jul 1941, but it
wouldn’t last.

Glenn Miller, perhaps more than anyone else, epitomized
the Big Band music of the 1940s. Born in Clarinda, Iowa
on 1 Mar 1904, his family moved frequently: to North
Platte, Nebraska; Grant City, Missouri (1915); and Fort
Morgan, Colorado (1918). By 1915 Glenn was playing in
the Grant City town orchestra (initially cornet and mandolin
but finally switching back to his beloved trombone in
1916). In 1920 he formed his first dance band while at high
school. Although he attended the University of Colorado at
Boulder, he was AWOL most of the time sitting in at gigs
and having auditions. Eventually he became a professional
musician with a place in Ben Pollack’s band in Los
Angeles. When a second trombonist, Jack Teagarden, was
CHARTWATCH 107
brought in (1928) and Glenn’s solos were reduced, he
decided that songwriting was his forte. His first song,
written and recorded with Benny Goodman, was Room
1411. In 1928, he also played session trombone at Okeh
Records for the Dorsey Brothers when Bing Crosby was
lead vocalist, including The Spell Of The Blues, Let’s Do It
and My Kinda Love. He became a member of Red Nichol’s
Orchestra in 1930 and played for two Broadway shows:
Strike Up The Band and Girl Crazy. He still worked with
the Dorsey Brothers as a trombonist, arranger and
songwriter, and they recorded his songs Annie’s Cousin
Fanny, Dese Dem Dose, Harlem Chapel Chimes and
Tomorrow’s Another Day. When British bandleader Ray
Noble toured the States, Glenn assembled an orchestra for
him, comprising a lead clarinettist and four saxophonists – a
format that would become the cornerstone of his own big
band. As a member of Ray Noble’s Orchestra, Glenn made
his first movie appearance in The Big Broadcast Of 1936
which starred Bing Crosby, Ethel Merman and comedian
George Burns. However, Glenn’s first big band formed in
1937 was a flop and broke up a year later.
Glenn realised he needed a unique style, which he
developed in 1938 having hired Wilbur Schwartz to play
lead clarinet (he had been a saxophonist). With a tenor
saxophone playing the same notes and three other
saxophones harmonizing, Glenn had found his unique style.
He signed to the RCA Victor subsidiary Bluebird Records
in Sep 1938 and a prestige gig at the Glen Island Casino in
New Rochelle, New York proved to be the breakthrough.
In 1939, Tuxedo Junction sold 115,000 copies in its first
week, and the orchestra first appeared at Carnegie Hall on 6
Oct. The band also recorded Moonlight Serenade and In
The Mood in 1939. CBS Radio approached him for a short,
quarter-hour radio show with the Andrews Sisters, which
quickly became the Glenn Miller show. One of Glenn’s
biggest hits, Chattanooga Choo Choo, was recorded in
1941 but surprisingly didn’t make the UK charts.

Gerald Walcan Bright adopted the name “Geraldo” in 1930.
Born in London on 10 Aug 1904, he went on to study piano
and organ at the Royal Academy of Music and his
professional career began playing piano for silent movie
screenings.
Geraldo orchestra consisted of his twin brother Sid on
piano; Jack Collier (bass);, Maurice Berman (drums); Ivor
Mairants (guitar); trumpeters Alfie Noakes, Basil Jones,
Flash Shields and Leslie “Hutch” Hutchinson; trombonists
Ted Heath (who later formed his own big band), Eric Tann,
Joe Ferrie and Jimmy Coombes; saxophonists Harry Hayes,
Nat Temple, Dougie Robinson, George Evans, Arthur
Birkby and Phil Goody; and singers Georgia Lee, Dorothy
Carless, Doreen Villiers, Len Chamber, Beryl Davies, J.
Hunter, Johnny Green, Derek Roy and Sally Douglas.
Geraldo also ran an organization known as “Geraldo’s
Navy”. From the mid-Thirties, American musicians were
banned from performing in Britain – in retaliation for a
similar ban on British musicians performing in the States.
One way around this was to book musicians to perform on
the ocean liners crossing the Atlantic such as the “Queen
Elizabeth” and “Queen Mary”. The British musicians could
then visit clubs in New York. This scheme ran for twenty
years until the bans were lifted, and musicians such as Duke
Ellington, Johnny Dankworth, Benny Green and Ronnie
Scott all benefited.

Hutch demonstrates very well the problems with an almost
static Top 10. Basically, I said all I could about him that I
could in the last issue, and there is nothing new. The chart
analysis is pretty much unremarkable too. Has anyone ever
achieved so high a position in the annual analysis with so
few Top 10 hits?

of the most influential records of its time, and that’s the

Blues – which in turn became Rock & Roll. Recorded in
1941 it was not a huge hit for the Andrews Sisters (i.e. it
didn’t sell a million copies) and it wasn’t a UK hit – if it
was even released here. The song also failed to make the
sheet music charts.

There was no published chart for the preceding week.
This list lends support to the idea that the charts from the Forties were compiled using data different to the over-the-counter
sales used these days. With only one exception, all the new entries were distributed by Decca, and several high entries
occurred on the same date. The Forties charts were compiled retrospectively and we believe shipments by distributors form
the basis of these charts

UK 1st Quarter 2014
Pharrell Williams' high-scoring ways, mostly in the form of Happy, continued into the first quarter of 2014
giving him a healthy score and lead. Behind him was Ellie Goulding, whose HALCYON was the album of the
quarter, and Jess Glynne who featured two of the ten biggest singles of the quarter and is now embarking on a
solo career. Pharrell is likely to fade and it'll be interesting to see who picks up the baton. Is the run of female
winners now finally broken?
