I hope many of you got out to enjoy it in some way. The Wingnutz field is in great shape, thanks to Casey B and his ingenuity! The gate lock combo was changed late in March. If you do not yet have the combo, you must call me to get it; I will NOT send it by email. We have also added quite a few new members this year and we are currently showing 93 paid members, of which more than 2/3rds are also Wingnutz members. A cabinet under the canopy will have basic first aid needs: alcohol, bandages, gauze and such. It will be locked with the same combo as the gate. Show n Tell From the Field 1 2 3,4,5 6 Cradle of Aviation 7 Schedule of Events 8 Our first contest of the year will be the Saturday after the general meeting (4/24), so come on down to the Wingnutz field and join the action. I certainly hope the weather will be as good as it has been the last few weekends. We are still running Slow Stick Combat and Easy Star events (April’s Easy Star event will be Bomb Drop). Sport electric sailplane will still be run, but it will not be a “prize” event in 2010. Since there are quite a few Park Zone Trojans in the club, there will be a different event each contest for this model. The April contest will be a climb and glide event. The pilot will have 1 minute to climb his model then shut off the motor. The model then must be glided for a maximum of 2 minutes. The clock stops at 2 minutes or when the throttle is advanced again. The flight is ended with a spot landing task, but it is NOT on the clock. After you perform the glide portion, you do not land immediately. You will be allowed to throttle up and set up and approach to a circle at your own leisure. You will only be allowed to make one pass. Where the model comes to a stop is measured to the center of the circle. No throttle movement is allowed once the model touches the ground. One point will be awarded for every second of the glide portion (max 120) and there will be three landing zones: 10, 25 and 50 points. The Trojan can be “hopped” up, we do not require that the power system be stock. The April general meeting will be our 2009 awards presentation. First through third place in each event will receive their trophies and prizes. See you all soon! Pez Tom PAGE 2 SILENTS PLEASE Watts Up? NEW BETHPAGE RULES 1. NO SOLO FLYING. A spotter/observer must be provided. If two individuals are flying, there must be at least one spotter/observer on hand. 2. In the near future the Park Commission will issue NOVICE PERMITS to independent applicants (those who are not members of a club). Holders of NOVICE PERMITS will not be allowed to fly without an instructor, preferably using a buddy box. 3. Club members who are certified as Pilots will be issued a PILOT PERMIT by the State Park Commission. 4. When a NOVICE independent flier is certified by a (club) Flight Instructor, he will be issued a PILOT PERMIT. 5. There will a mandatory change of the flight line, to grandstand side, at 3:00 PM. No Exceptions. 6. A Club Tag and the Park Permit will be conspicuously displayed by a Pilot when flying. 7. The Commission will issue a separate car tag in the near future. 8. All aircraft must have the owners name, address and AMA number somewhere on (or in) the aircraft. These rules will be strictly enforced by the park police and individuals will be expelled from the field and their privileges may be revoked. This season, a phone number will be available to call the park police who will escort any individual off the field and out of the park that is not adhering to these rules. FPV DEMO DAY - SATURDAY MAY 22nd Gary Graf (Ghostbuster Gary) will be running an FPV (first person view) flying event at the Calverton field on May 22nd. He has invited modelers from all over the country to show off the latest technology to model flight; flying from the cockpit with the aid of downlink video and flight parameters (speed, altitude, direction, etc). Joe Wojtkowicz shows off his 51inch wingspan AJ Slick By 3D Hobby Shop. Powered by an Extreme Flight Torque 2812T/720 spinning an APC 14 X 7 prop via a Castle Ice 75A ESC off a Rhino 4S 3700 producing 920 watts @ 54 amps . Servos are HS65MG all round. RTF weight is 4lbs 3 oz. Tom Hunt shows his scratch built Yak-6m Russian Utility Aircraft. It sports a wing span of 51.5 inches with a wing area of 408 inch² and a length of 38 inches. Ready to fly weight is 3.25 pounds with a set of Eflite 20 electric retracts. Power is provided by a pair of AC2212/13 motors with 8 X 7 props running off a 3S 2250mah 45C TP pack. SILENTS PLEASE PAGE 4 Jim Perlowsky shows his Multiplex TwinStar Night flyer. Wingspan is 56 inches with 676 inch² of wing area. Hobby Lobby 400XT’s spin counter rotating APC 8 X 6E props via Hobby City Simple Series 18 amp ESC’s making 225 watts off a Rhino 3S 2250 pack. Over 440 individual LEDs were used to provide night time lighting. Gerhard Spielmann displays his FREDe™ kit by Stevens Aero that he picked up at last years NEAT Fair. It’s powered via a small GWS brushed ISP gearbox and a 2S 1000-ish lipo battery. Despite having no dihedral the inherent stability is believed to be provided by the low fuselage via a pendulum type method. Ron Williams shows off his acrobatic Yak 55, no model details were provided. SILENTS PLEASE PAGE 5 Dennis Andreas shows his VK Fokker Triplane, built in 1982. Designed for a .60 Glow converted to electric five years ago. 1/6 scale, top wing 47",Sig KoverAll and dope finish, Major Decals, Williams Brothers details. Hobby Lobby Atlas Black 4030-12 motor spins an APC 15 x 10 E prop via a Jeti Opto ESC off a Tenergy 4S 4000 pack providing 475 watts. Tom Hunt is currently ARF bashing his second FMS P51D into a P-51B with a Malcom hood (non-sliding). The Mustang will also sport dropping bombs or tanks and pneumatic retracts. 57 inch wingspan, with a projected weight of about 5 pounds with 4S 3700 pack. SILENTS PLEASE From the Field...
