Music Together®
for ages infant to 5 years
All children are musical! Come spend 45 minutes each week singing, playing
instruments and dancing with your infant, toddler or preschooler in a playful,
non-performance-oriented atmosphere. These developmentally appropriate classes
guide young children through the crucial early stages of music development and
feature great arrangements of original and traditional songs in a wide variety of
tonalities, meters, and cultural styles. Tuition includes two professionally recorded CDs,
a beautifully illustrated songbook, and a parent guide DVD titled "Music
Together at Home: Helping Your Child Grow Musically." Each session teaches a new
collection of songs.

KidsARTS
for ages 3-6
Our wonderful KidsARTS program is designed specifically for preschoolers,
kindergarteners and young homeschoolers. Students in this class experience a wellrounded arts education through lessons crafted around music, movement, theater skills,
puppetry, visual arts and dramatic play. Using these creative tools, students develop
skills in body coordination, memory, cooperation, spatial relations and rhythm. We also
incorporate learning basic colors, shapes, counting,
patterns, lines, forms, texture and design in our weekly
classes.

Budding Rembrandts works with the power of the imagination to create images filled with

Discovering Drawing
for ages 10 - 13
Developing artistic confidence begins with drawing as a foundation for viewing the world.
Students will develop their powers of observation and will work on the use of perspective
and proportions in creating compelling imagery.

Painting at Parkview

In this class students explore their preferred medium -- watercolors, acrylics, oils,
pastels, color pencils -- and work on various projects over the course of 4 weeks.

Land Art: Workshop
for ages 16+
Land art is a form of art which seeks to find
beauty in landscapes by building art using
natural materials in an outdoor setting. In this workshop participants will learn more
about Land Art, and will contemplate and discuss the concepts behind Land Art and
Earthworks while viewing art at the Northfield Arts Guild. After learning about the art,
participants will walk to the Carleton Arboretum and will explore the medium of Land Art
for an afternoon with guidance from a land artist.

Clay Adventures: Under the Sea
for ages 5 - 8
Come, explore, and get inspired by the world under
the sea. Create sea animals, an underwater world,
or sea monsters. Use various hand-building
techniques and colorful underglazes to make and
decorate your pieces.

Clay Crazy

This is an excellent introduction to working with clay. Use a variety of hand-building and/
or wheel throwing techniques to make cups, bowls, animals, boxes, houses, or tiles.
Then decorate your pieces using different hand tools and colorful underglazes.

Nature’s Design: Workshop
for ages 16+
From the spiral of a fern frond or the roundness of an acorn, to the pattern of cells under
a microscope or a line that defines the horizon, nature is bountiful in the visual material it
offers us. Participants in this handbuilding class will examine the natural world for
subtleties of shape, design, texture, and color to enhance slab, pinch, or coiled pieces.
This course is open to those at the beginning and intermediate levels.

Creative Ballet

Boys and girls alike will increase their physical awareness and begin to learn the fundamentals of

explored each week as we plié, leap, twirl, skip, jump and imagine.

In this level the dancer builds a higher level of achievement and strength. Dancers are expected
to articulate basic ballet technique and to perform longer ballet combinations, while also
individually interpreting the movement material.

This class level builds on the physical and mental strength

The Arts Guild offers over 40 weekly classes in dance, music, theater, literary and visual
arts. Students, young and old, novice and experienced, are invited to explore their
creative voices as they are guided by teachers who are working professionals and
certified art instructors. Classes are taught with a focus on sequential development of
skills, aligned with State Standards in the arts, establishing the groundwork for aesthetic
development and a lifelong appreciation of the arts.

 Bailey Anderson is a movement artist located in Minneapolis, Minnesota; specializing
in yoga, choreography, and dance. Her philosophy is to empower the student or
performer, broaden perspectives, and have fun.
 Rafael Estrella is a graduate of Carleton College, a certified art educator, and
currently teaching for the Owatonna School District. When he is not teaching art, he is
drawing, creating ceramics, coaching, playing soccer, or reading.
 Laura Goodwin grew up in Northfield and attended classes at the Arts Guild as
youngster. She is a Rhode Island School of Design graduate, who taught in RISD's
children's program. Laura's journey into the field of autism began after a family
member was diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Laura currently works as
educational assistant at NHS in the autism program.
 Fred Gustafson retired from a full career of teaching art in the Duluth school system.
He is the lead teacher in the ceramics program at the Arts Guild.
 Glynnis Lessing has recently moved to Northfield from Chicago where she taught for
the 24 years at Lill Street, Art Resources inTeaching and various other outreach
programs. She has a BFA from the University of Minnesota and is a working potter
selling her work at art fairs and galleries.
 Cliff Martin is a native Northfielder and member of the Lost Boyz Crew. He has been
dancing for over 3 years. You can frequently catch him jamming on Bridge Square.
 Kate McDonnell is working on her Masters degree in Dance Therapy. She is a
Global SomaticsTM practitioner. She has special interest in teaching dancers with
special needs.
 Andrea Mirenda has been dancing and teaching ballroom dance in the Midwest for
several years. She coaches several collegiate performance teams including St. Mary's
University and Carleton College, her alma mater.
 Riki Kölbl Nelson has an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Minnesota.
She has exhibited artwork nationally and internationally.

 Sheila Novak is living and working in Northfield as a fifth year Art Apprentice at
St. Olaf College, her alma mater. Sheila aspires to build a career of enriching youth
development by creating and teaching art.
 Kathleen Pender is a native of Northfield. Kathleen is pursuing her B.A. in Dance at
St. Olaf College. She is interested in learning how to teach dance to students of all
abilities. Currently, Kathleen is exploring how images can inform her movement and
body awareness. Her passion for dance, in its many forms, led her to study in Ghana
last year. The Northfield Arts Guild's dance program was the foundation of Kathleen's
dance training.
 Charisse Ponder works as a dancer, teacher and choreographer. She has studied at
the Joffrey Ballet in New York City and has performed with the St. Paul Classical
Ballet Academy, MN Dance Theatre, and on The Prairie Home Companion.
 Anna Lisa Rustad majored in music at St. Olaf College and received her Masters in
Teaching from St. Thomas University. Anna Lisa is a certified Music Together®
instructor. She also teaches piano and plays fiddle with Scandium, a contemporary
Scandinavian folk band.
 Christina Schwietz has a sense of wonder when it comes to all forms of art! She
loves to express herself in music, dance, drawing, painting, sculpting, storytelling,
poetry, song, literature, but mostly drama. Christina believes that being an artist
means celebrating who you are and how you see the world around you, which makes
her the perfect choice to teach the KidsARTS class.
 Shari Setchell is a certified Global SomaticsTM Practitioner and applies somatic
training in her ballet instruction. Shari is choreographer for Northfield High School’s
Rock & Roll Revival and also works as a choreographer throughout the region.
 Juliane Shibata received her MFA in Ceramics from Bowling Green State University,
having previously graduated from Carleton College with a BA in Studio Art. She has
been an artist in residence at the Appalachian Center for Craft in Tennessee and The
Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China. Juliane taught for two years at Hope College
and is teaching this winter at Carleton College.
 Kate Stuart became involved with the Arts Guild by enrolling her young daughters in

Guild, the Northfield Senior Center, and for fellow homeschooling families. In addition
she is Music Director of the Twin Cities Recorder Guild and is the Mayor of the City of
Nerstrand.
