DD KISAN CHANNEL PROMO SAGA TURNS MURKIER

MUMBAI: The newly launched Kisan channel of the state-owned Doordarshan
got embroiled in an avoidable controversy even before it could go on air
officially.
It is not in public domain that the DD hired Lowe Lintas to prepare a
promotional advertisement featuring a prominent person of celebrity status to
propagate the new channel exclusively for the benefit of farmers of the
country. It may be recalled that the said Kisan channel was a packed project of
none other than the Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.
It was also learnt that during the pre-contract deliberations, the name of
superstar Amitabh Bachchan was discussed and finalised and the agency was
asked to submit the company the cost of production including the fee to be
paid to the said celebrity.
In due course of time, Lowe Lintas did the sequence of promotional
advertisements and submitted the same to the DD authorities along with the
total bill of Rs.6.31 crores which included Rs.4.2 crore fee for the celebrity
concerned - Amitabh Bachchan.
When this arrangement became a public knowledge Big B immediately
denied saying that he did it ‘pro bono’ meaning that he did not charge a single
penny from DD or the agency concerned. After the agencies mention of Rs. 4.2
crore charge in his name Bachchan said that he will ask the agency to return
the same to DD. Bachchan has always been a Narendra Modi favourite as far as
doing his brand ambassador roles is concerned. Earlier he did a multipronged
advertisement blitz for the Gujarat tourism as its sole brand ambassador.
Now this curious development raises several questions of professional
charges and personal ethics. It is totally unbelievable that the higher ups in
Lintas claimed Rs.4.2 crore in the name of Bachchan but kept the superstar in
the dark. Knowledgeable sources in the ad world were of the view that it is

A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS:
An IPS officer donning different hats
What is your current job profile? Are you
happy with this assignment?
I am currently working as Counsellor in
Embassy of India, The Hague, The Netherlands.
I am Director of The Gandhi Centre,
representing India and disseminating
information about the rich and myriad culture
and heritage of this ancient civilization along
with contemporary economic, social and
educational developments, which is an
extremely satisfying experience. Living and
working in this beautiful country has given great
exposure to me and my family members. As far
as liking of job is concerned its like the song
says, "If you can't be with the one you love then
love the one you're with." Ideally do something
that you love; if you can't do that, try and love
the thing you're doing and do it as well as you
can.
totally improbable that any agency would
claim charges in the name of a celebrity
without his knowledge. So Amitabh
Bachchan's claim does not hold much
water and it seems to be an afterthought
or a damage control exercise to clear his
public friendly image.
Bachchan claims that he has asked
Lintas to return the Rs.4.2 crores to DD
further establishes the fact that he was in
the know of things throughout.
Even if one stakes out this
astronomical figure, out of the said
contract, the remaining amount, Rs.2.29 crore is again is too high an amount for churning out 10 or
15 seconds promo ads. Sources in the industry said that this amount consists of expenses occurred
on the actual days of shooting wherein the money spent on boarding and lodging, that is always
five-star hospitality, the cost of vanity vans, remuneration for the unit members, hiring charges of
the premises and transportation charges for the entire schedule, etc. It is also surprising that
though DD is well equipped to produce its own advertisements and promos in house, why it
preferred to hire an expensive and a high profile agency like the Lintas or it was on the instructions
of none other than Big B himself to hire the agency with which he feels comfortable to work with.
There are many ifs and buts over the entire controversy and much more needs to be done to
clear the dust which has on DD's intentions and the final work done by Lintas.

VANISHING TRIBE OF
SIKH TAXI DRIVERS
ONCE A COMMON SIGHT ON MUMBAI'S ROADS, LIKE
THE LARGE AND MOUSTACHIOED DOORMEN AT FIVE
STAR HOTELS, SARDAR CABBIES HAVE BECOME A
RARITY IN MUMBAI
Baljeet Parmar
When was the last time you sat in a taxi with a
Sardar driver? Once a common sight on
Mumbai's roads, like the large and
moustachioed doormen at five star hotels,
Sardar cabbies have become a rarity in Mumbai.
It was in 1947 that Mumbai saw its biggest influx
of Sikh taxi drivers. Many came to the city after
Partition and were put up in transit camps at
Sion-Koliwada — hence the famous red batter in
Koliwada fish and prawns.
Displaced Sikhs were offered taxi permits for
free and unemployed youngsters flocked to get
them. Till the late 1980s, Sikh taxi drivers
dominated the trade in Mumbai. They knew the
city's topography like the back of their hands.
They never said “rasta batana hoga” like their
successors, and treated their customers to
typical Punjabi bonhomie and hospitality. But as
younger Sikhs moved into other employment
and business opportunities, taxi driving was left
to the newer migrants. Apart from the few at
Dadar Railway Station — unfortunately no
longer living up to the reliability of their
forbearers — or those running a shuttle services
between the Navi Mumbai and Sion route, the
Sikh cabbie is nowhere to be seen.
Yet, for Joginder Singh, driving a taxi is a
passion he's not willing to give up. Joginder
bought a second-hand Austin for Rs3,000, in
1955, selling his mother's jewellery for the
funds. “The minimum fare then was just six
annas (about 36 paisa today). Petrol was sold by
the gallon, and cost about Rs2 per gallon or 40
paisa per litre. There were hardly 4,000 taxis in
the entire city and we were rarely idle. If we
made around Rs20 day we thanked God for his
grace.”
By the mid-60s, Austins and Tigers made
way for Fiats, assembled in the city from Italian
parts. “I bought my first Fiat, called Premier, for
Rs 11,000. It was a big amount in those days
and I had to take a loan with a monthly
installment of Rs300,” said Inder Singh who
started driving in 1962.
Kirpal Singh, 66, was not lucky enough to
own a taxi: “I used to hire a taxi on rent for Rs20
per day in the '60s and made a profit of Rs10 per
day — enough to run my household,” he says.
The respect and honour that Sardar taxi drivers
commanded was borne out by the fact that the
police never asked to see their driving licences.
Passengers too put their trust in them. “Once
during the night shift I was waiting for a
passenger outside Sion hospital. At around 2am
a newly-wed couple approached me for a return
trip to Borivli. They looked worried and needed
some urgent cash to pay for their sick relative.
When the husband noticed that I was a Sikh, he
told his wife to go alone and fetch the cash from
home. That was the reputation we had in those
days,” recalls Gurbachan Singh.
Kirpal Singh sees it slightly differently: “I was
waiting near Lotus cinema at Worli when actor
Dilip Kumar sat in my vehicle and asked to be
taken to Churchgate. His car had broken down
and he was in a great hurry. The meter read
Rs3.50 when I dropped him and he paid me Rs4.
I felt elated as the extra money was more
important to me than the celebrity!”
Basically you are an IPS officer (1995
batch). What made you opt for MEA?
Every job has its beauty and all jobs are
important because it is good to have something
to think about. I have opted for IPS cadre as per
my choice as I loved Khaki Uniform. But I
wanted to sail in a different boat too.
Fortunately I got an opportunity in MEA to wear
a different cap and so I am here. It is most
important that if you get an opportunity to serve
people from different aspects, it is an asset and
new experience in life. It is not only satisfying
but makes you feel more cherished in a different
role. You may be aware that the Government of
India has provision for deputation to serve in
different organization or ministry if someone
desires to. It means that an officer working in
the State Government or in one wing of the
Central Government can work in another wing of
the Central Government if found suitable. I
applied and got an opportunity to work in MEA. I
opted for MEA because it gave me an altogether
new perspective on the functioning of the
Government with different kinds of roles and
responsibilities. It has been a great learning
experience.
As an IPS officer of Maharashtra Cadre
where all you have served?
Being an IPS officer of Maharashtra Cadre, I got
an opportunity to serve as the Superintendent
of Police of Ratnagiri, Solapur and Akola
Districts. I also served as deputy commissioner
of Police, Zone- IX, Mumbai. All these
assignments were quite challenging. I felt as if I
have stopped imbibing knowledge and a sort of
monotony appeared to be setting in.
How is your experience in the Mumbai
Passport office as RPO?
I worked as RPO Mumbai from 2009 to 2013 and
that was a wonderful experience. Regional
Passport Office (RPO) is the public face of MEA
within the country. I was involved with planning
and later also managed transition from old
paper based Passport application system to new
paperless Passport Seva Project (PSP) based
processing. It is an important public service
delivery office with onus to provide Passport to
the eligible applicants in an efficient,
transparent and time-bound manner. However,
security aspect in Passport issuance system is
also quite crucial. Though streamlining the
functioning of the new PSP system along with
Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) requires lot of
efforts, the positive outcome was certainly
exhilarating. At RPO Mumbai, we were issuing
1500 to 2000 passports every day which is
mountainous task but handled it in efficient way.
Any plan to repatriate to IPS cadre in
Maharashtra?
I am working in the MEA since 2009 and it has
been a great learning experience. Although I'm
happy with my current job I believe that there
must be something else that I can do better and
love more. I am now eagerly looking forward to
joining the Maharashtra Police after quite a long
stint in MEA. I firmly believe that the Police, as
an organization can serve the society in the
most effective manner and is capable of
becoming friend, philosopher and guide to lawabiding citizens in the true sense. And in my
humble opinion, Maharashtra cadre continues
to be one of the best cadres in the country.

STAY ALERT,
WARN COPS
PETTY THEFTS ON THE RISE IN MALLS
DESPITE CCTV CAMERAS
Janhavi Samant
MALAD: The next time you go shopping, be it to the market or the fancy shopping mall with CCTV
cameras, beware of pick-pocketeers who miss no chance to relieve you off your valuables.
Recently, a lady went shopping at a mall in Malad. At a certain point, she noticed that her purse
was missing. She immediately contacted the store manager and security who were able to locate her
purse but only after nearly two hours. However, the money was missing from the purse. After the
tedious process of rummaging through the CCTV footage, the lady and the store
manager were able to pinpoint at a woman shoplifting the lady's purse. Despite
submitting this to the Bangur Nagar police station and the police nabbing the
culprit, the lady still managed to escape the clutches of the police; they could not
arrest her post evening. The next day she went missing from the residential
address she had provided to the police.
This is not a random case of a purse being stolen. Sources in the police say that
on an average atleast 10 cases of pick-pocketing and petty thefts are registered in
the city. Of these, four offences are committed by women. “Our statistics show
that nearly 40 per cent of the pick-pocketing offences are committed by women.
Such instances are on the rise,” says a police official at Bangur Nagar police
station.
He added that despite CCTV cameras fitted in malls and others places, it is
often difficult to nab the culprit as the quality of the footage is not good. He said,
“One should be careful of one's belongings while stepping out of the house.
Ensure that you don't get distracted by anything or anyone as even a brief moment
of distraction is enough for the pick-pocketeer to snatch away your valuables.”
The police officer further adds that mostly thefts occur in a non-confrontational
manner usually through stealth or forgetfulness of the victim.
Anita Soni, 45, an avid window shopper and Andheri resident said that she
never lets her bag out of sight. “I keep important things like cash and credit cards
in a sling bag which also accommodates my smart phone. I avoid maintaining eye
contact or conversations with strangers as these are common tactics for
distracting a person,” she says
Another Andheri shopper, Mangesh More, said that he keeps minimum cash
with him as life has become easier with cards. “With PIN numbers being
introduced in all credit and debit cards, there are less chances of misuse of cards
even if they are stolen. Plus banks are helpful in locking cards immediately in case
of theft,” More says.
MUMBAI: Though the Monsoon is inconsistent
in Mumbai, the fear of spread of disease prone
mosquitoes is inevitable, especially near
construction sites. These sites are vulnerable to
growth of mosquitoes since water remains
scattered and spread all over due to constant
work in the area.
To this effect, the Brihan Mumbai Municipal
Corporation (BMC)'s Insecticide Control Wing of
Medical Health Department has sent notices to
2741 developers in Mumbai. The BMC has given
strict instruction to them to control mosquito's
breeding by covering areas which have water
spread in and around their construction site.
It has been observed by the BMC Health
Department on various sites during routine
inspections that developers are neglecting
basic things of health awareness. It can become
a serious cause of concern and might spread
mosquito-related diseases. Keeping all these
factors in the mind, the BMC has chalked out a
10-point programme to curb mosquito menace.
The civic authority has strictly warned builders
to follow and implement these on top priority.
According to BMC's plan there should be a
proper drainage system to recede on its own
without getting stuck at any place. Mosquito
nets are to be provided to construction workers,
and doctors should be appointed at
construction sites. Medical health cards should
be provided to workers. If any developers are
not following the BMC's guidelines on
construction sites, then stop work notice would
be issued by the Building Proposal Department.
The BMC is serious about these issues and is
strictly inspecting various sites time to time.
Aslam Shaikh, MLA from Malvani says, “It is
a joint responsibility of residential societies,
slum areas and the BMC to take to avoid
mosquito breeding. The residential societies
should make sure that their flowerpot areas and
ducts are clean by removing stored water timely
and regularly. Slum residents should also make
sure to avoid water storage at unwanted places
to avoid mosquito breeding. Similarly, the BMC
should take stern action against societies who
are not following guidelines issued by the BMC
with regards to avoid breeding. Indeed the BMC
should ensure that
timely fumigation and
insects killing powders
and chemicals are
spread timely.”
Sheikh added,
“Being a public
representative, it is
our responsibility that
timely fumigation in all
areas is done
r e g u l a r l y. I n m y
constituency, I make
sure that timely spray
Aslam Shaikh
of chemicals and
fumigation activities are done on timely and
regular basis.”
Measures to avoid mosquito menace:
· No steel tin sheets to be kept on
construction site. Water storage drums,
helmets and bowls in which cement is carried
should be properly covered. These are fertile
breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
· Avoid water storage on temporary plastic
roofs of workers houses.
· The residential place of workers has to be
clean and hygienic.
· The basement areas of construction sites
should have high power water removing pumps
in case water is filled in the area.
· There should be proper lights in basement
areas. Toilets and bath areas should be properly
maintained so no water remained blocked.
· Malaria blood tests should be conducted on
newly employed workers.

BMC turns blind eye to station lane
Mewati Sitaram
ANDHERI: The residents of Andheri West are in fear of
losing a complete lane, which is illegally occupied by
hawkers. It may be noted that there is a bylane
famously known as Chappal Galli, which connects
Andheri station West from S V Road. It is a complete
motorable road, which was used by autorickshaws
and other vehicles to reach Andheri station. During
the recent one-month festival of Ramzan, the entire
lane was converted in to an illegal hawking plaza with
no space left for vehicles to move.
As the festival is over, these hawkers should be
done away with it. But the civic administration is
turning a blind eye for removing illegal hawkers for
unknown reasons. If no timely action is initiated and
illegal hawkers removed, it would be a permanent
closure of the motorable lane.
It may be noted that S.V.Road sees heavy traffic
movement throughout the day. When this lane is
operational, the traffic is divided in to two parts.
Those who want to get down at Andheri station, use
this approach lane. Whereas those, who wish to
traverse towards Vile Parle side, they use S V Road.
This lane plays a role of dividing and partially
decongesting the area of Andheri station.
Sunil Parab, a local activist said, “The civic
administration is hand-in-glove with local hawkers.
The BMC office is located 100 meters away from this
point The reason behind turning a blind eye towards
these hawkers is that their monetary interest is
protected.”
Numerous attempts to contact A V Masurkar, AMC
were futile. Bhushan Rane, Senior PI D N Nagar Traffic
Division said, “We are in constant touch with all
agencies and doing correspondence with the BMC too.
If all agencies come together it would be easier to
make the road usable for vehicles.”

Reports have been received that due
to the situation prevailing in the areas
under the control of Commissioner of
Police, Brihan Mumbai, it is
apprehended that terrorist/anti-social
elements may seek hide out in the

of breach of peace and disturbance of
public tranquillity and also there is
grave danger to human life, health
and safety and injury to public
property on that account.
It is necessary that some checks

Gastro ailments at
all time high
DOCTORS WARN THAT MANY PATIENTS NEED
HOSPITALISATION AND ARE NOT RESPONDING TO
MEDICATION
Janhavi Samant
ANDHERI: Nisha Bendre (29), a D.N.Nagar
resident has just returned home after spending
almost a week in hospital for gastroenteritis.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal
Corporation, she is one of the 840 gastroenteritis
patients in the city who got treated in July so far.
Says Dr Mini Khetrapal, epidemiology incharge in the BMC, “In monsoon, we do see a
surge in stomach ailment cases, especially
Gastroenteritis.”
Khetrapal adds that the habit of Mumbaikars
eating out is one major contributing factor to the
rise in gastroenteritis cases in the city. “We
request people not to eat out especially from
roadside stalls. We are also collecting water
samples from various parts of the city to rule out
water contaminations. Our water department is
already looking into it,” says Khetrapal.
Doctors said many patients need
hospitalisation and are not responding to
medication. According to the figures provided by
the BMC's health department, 1023 cases of
Gastroenteritis were reported in June alone in
civic hospitals. In the last three days, the BMC
hospitals have received more than 66
gastroenteritis cases.
“If the BMC has quoted 840 cases from its
hospitals, private hospitals are definitely treating
more. We are seeing a lot of Gastroenteritis cases
where the patient is having 30-35 episodes of
loose motions in a day. In elderly patients, we are
also seeing acute renal failure due to
dehydration,” corroborates Dr Pratit Samdhani,
consultant physician at Jaslok Hospital.
He adds that most of these patients belong to
the 20-40 age group. “This is the working class
group and all of them have a history of eating
out,” he adds.
Dr Khusrav Bhajan, intensivist at PD Hinduja
Hospital sums up, “Out of the 10 people coming
to me for stomach ailments, 5-6 are gastro cases,
2 typhoid and 2 hepatitis. In gastro cases, most
patients are having 20-30 episodes of loose
motions in a day and it is taking a while for the
kidney functioning to get back to normalcy. All
of them have a history of eating out. People
should be careful while having food outside.”

NAIR GROUP WINS CLUB POLL
MM Correspondent
LOKHANDWALA: Once again, Hemant
Nair group maintained its hold on
SNLCHHSA by winning eight of the nine
managing committee seats. The opposite
group could win only one seat wherein
Sanjay Prashar got elected for the first
time.
The recent elections have raised many
controversies with both sides harling
allegations and counter allegations over
the management of the club. There were attempts to delay the election too but the Court intervention
made it possible for the polls to be held. We congratulate both the warring groups for maintaining high
standards of democracy and purposefulness.
We hope that the club will continue to prosper and cater to the needs of the hundreds of members
and patrons. We also hope that the new management will fulfil its promise of accountability and
transparency.

ANDHERI: Residents of Andheri are peeved with
the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)
for failing to clear the remains of hacked trees in
their locality.
The civic body had recently undertaken
trimming and pruning of trees, which it
considered dangerous, during the monsoon to
prevent tree-related accidents in case of heavy
rains. However, after getting the needful done,
the BMC has failed to clear the tree foliage off
the street. This is causing problems to the
residents as it has started to stink and is
attracting mosquitoes. Instead of clearing the
tree foliage, the authorities have simply dragged
them to the side of footpaths which obstructs
the way of pedestrians.
Adolf D'Souza, former corporator, who
resides in Andheri says that the corporation
pruned the trees but it has not cleared the
debris. "We residents try hard to keep our
surroundings clean. But with the BMC leaving
the tree foliage in the area, the area has turned
into a garbage dump. This is dangerous as it
attracts mosquitoes," he adds.
D'Souza says that when he was a corporator,
they had tried to make spots for keeping such
tree foliage which could then be turned into
natural fertilizers. "However, there was no
positive reply from the corporation this time
around," comments D'Souza.
With leaves and branches lying around,
people have been disposing of garbage on the
heaps, which have now started stinking and
attracting flies and mosquitoes. Another
resident, Manoj Tripathi says that people have
started to dump plastic bags and food packets on
these heaps. It looks like a garbage dump only,"
he claims.
Several residents said that they have made
complaints to the BMC which have fallen on deaf
ears. "It is an eyesore as well as a health hazard.
The BMC should ensure that the tree foliage is
cleared immediately," points out resident Bharti
Shah.
Shah adds that the debris is obstructive to
pedestrians. "We have to walk around the dump
which occupies majority of the footpath area. It
is nearly impossible to go for my evening walks
as the heaps of leaves and branches emanates
bad smell,” she said.
Residents demand to know why BMC
garbage trucks, which come to collect garbage
daily cannot clear the tree foliage. "Anyway it is
piled on one side of the road or on footpaths. The
garbage trucks can simply clear it when it comes
to collect other garbage in the mornings,"
suggests Tripathi.
Despite repeated attempts, Parag Masurkar,
the assistant commissioner, K-West ward was
not available for comment.

Tips for Special Education Teachers
MM Correspondent
Along with new smiling faces, a new school year brings
special education teachers new co-teaching arrangements,
new assessments to give, and more. In order to help you be
as effective as you can with your new students, here are
few back-to-school tips that will make managing your
special education program a little easier:
Organize all paperwork: Special educators handle
lots of paperwork and documentation throughout the year.
Try to set up two separate folders or binders for each child
on your case load: one for keeping track of student work
and assessment data and the other for keeping track of all
other special education documentation.
Start communication log: Keeping track of all phone
calls, e-mails, notes home, meetings, and conferences is
important. Create a "communication log" for yourself in a
notebook that is easily accessible. Be sure to note the
dates, times, and nature of the communications you have.
Establish a daily schedule for you and your
students: Whether you're a resource teacher or selfcontained teacher, it's important to establish your daily
schedule. Be sure to consider the service hours required for
each of your students, any related services, and coteaching. Call your students' families: Take the time to
introduce yourself with a brief phone call before school
starts. You'll be working with these students and their
families for at least the next school year, and a simple
"hello" from their future teacher can ease some of the backto-school jitters!
Touch base with related service providers: It's
important to contact the related service providers occupational therapists, physical therapists,
speech/language therapists, or counselors - in your school
as soon as possible to establish a schedule of times for your
students who need these services. The earlier you touch
base, the more likely you'll be able to find times that work
for everyone.
Meet with your general education co-teachers:
Communicating with your general education co-teachers
will be important throughout the year, so get a head start
on establishing this important relationship now! Share all of
the information you can about schedules, students, and IEP
services so that you're ready to start the year.
Keep everyone informed: All additional school staff
such as assistants and specialists who will be working with
your students need to be aware of their needs and their
IEPs before school starts. Organize a way to keep track of
who has read through the IEPs, and be sure to update your
colleagues if the IEPs change during the school year.
Start and stay positive: As a special educator, you'll
have lots of responsibilities this year, and it may seem
overwhelming at times. If your focus is on the needs of your
students and their success, you'll stay motivated and find
ways to make everything happen. Being positive, flexible,
and organized from the start will help you and your
students have a successful year.
MULUND: In the wake of water
crisis, it is our prime duty to
contribute towards a conservation of
this valuable natural resource.
Keeping this need in mind one of the

Aditya Patel Leads
Audi R8 LMS
Cup Championship
MM Correspondent
MUMBAI: Aditya Patel continued his winning streak with another podium at
the Penbay International Circuit in Taiwan recently. This was the third round of
the Audi R8 LMS cup. This was also a three-race round and Aditya had a great
day seeing him leading the championship table.
Chennai star, Aditya started race 1 from sixth on the grid. He had a good
start and moved two places ahead to finish fourth. Edoarda Mortara, DTM
driver won this race comfortably. It was race two which saw Aditya Patel
clinching a podium finish claiming the 2nd spot. He started fourth on the grid
and moved to 2nd place behind 1st race winner, Edoarda Mortara. Mortara was
later penalized for an incident. Frankie Cheng, who was on better tyres soon
challenged Aditya and managed to take a lead.
Aditya started race three hoping to win the race. However, he was at a
disadvantage right from the beginning as he started the race on used tyres.
Aditya lost the lead and dropped to sixth place due to damage from the incident
on the first lap.
Aditya managed to collect enough points to lead championship table. Patel
now leads the title with 80 points ahead of Thomas Fjordbach with 76 and
Frankie Cheng with 68 points. The next race will be in Malaysia on September
4 and 5.
Aditya says, "It was a tough weekend both in terms of conditions as well as
competition. It still feels good to lead the championship after the halfway
mark. I did make some wrong decisions in terms of strategy but I guess I won't
make the same mistakes again! I now look forward to the second half of the
season."

DO JOURNALISTS IN INDIA
NEED PROTECTIVE LAWS?
A journalist is someone who brings us news from all around and
provides information which acts as an eye opener. Last week, a
journalist from Mira Road was killed, and his colleagues were
attacked while covering a bar raid. In another instance, recently, a
journalist was killed in UP and his family was burnt to death because
the journalist raised a campaign against a minister. So is it right to
rage against them and take such drastic actions? In a scenario like
this, it is very difficult for a journalist to perform his or her duty.
Therefore, should strict Protection laws be enforced for the safety of
journalists? Kaushani Roy finds out...
SURESH ANAND, 45: Yes, I think there
should be a law to protect journalists and
as far as I know there are certain laws and
if these laws are not being practiced then a
more firm law should be made. This is will
be for the betterment of journalists so that
they can perform their duty with ease.
PAYAL THAPPA, 27: There should be
certain laws made for the protection of
journalists. If there is a law for Dowry, Eve
teasing and other social issues a law should
be made for this as well. They are the ones
who ensure that news from all around the
world reaches us. So I think even we should
assure their safety by making a law.
DEVENDRA KHOND, 26: I think it's a
basic right as a person to demand
protection where you work. So keeping
that in mind yes, there has to be a law for
journalists too.
FROOTI PRASAD, 23: If there are so
many mishaps with journalists, then it also
questions our safety. So I think a severe
action has to be taken for the same.
SHRIKANT GUPTA, 23: Journalists get
us all kinds of information. They act as
mirrors to the audience. I think this matter
should not be taken lightly and there has
to be an initiative from the government to
protect the rights of journalists.

that she distinctly excels in, resulting in people envying her success. Cards show that
Priyanka always makes correct choices relating her career which she will continue to do
so, as she will get great and varied offers worth more than her capabilities that she will
outshine with her hard work. Priyanka knows how to control her temper in adverse
situations but Cards advise her to be more careful as some people will try to plot her. Cards show that love proposals are likely to come her
way during December 2015 to February 2016...this period is also favourable concerning her career. She is also advised to take
precautions and necessary care regarding her health. Year 2016 will be extremely favourable for her as it will give her immense success in
her career as lot of contracts will come her way that shall provide her with enormous amount of moolah. Buying and/or selling of property
is good for her in the years 2015 and 2016. If Priyanka is interested in investing in a venture or starting a business, year 2016 is the right
time. Special care should be taken to avoid investments and any significant decisions about her life and career in the period from
September to December 2016 as it is not favourable leading to losses though she will recover it. She will be successful in her International
projects and be appreciated for her work. I bless her for her future endeavours.

SUNIL BAJAJ, 28: Yes, there should be a
law, but I strongly believe that with great
responsibility comes great power so I
think even journalists should use their
power responsibly.
FALGUNI KHANNA, 18: I think a law
should be imposed because many times
people fail to understand the responsibility
of journalist. They do their duty diligently
and we should pay them their due by
giving them a certain kind of protection.
ABISH SHARMA, 27: Journalists are
doing their work by providing growth to
the society in their own way. If there are so
many hurdles in the way of a journalist,
then they won't be able to work and
provide us with quality news. So a law
should be imposed so that they can work
safely in their space.
SHIVAJI REDDY, 28: There should be a
law because they tell us everything and
every bit of the world where we cannot be
present physically. So, if there are so many
obstacles in the way of a journalist, they
won't be able to work fearlessly and that
can cause a threat to the public security
also.

Bhumi Pednekar can change
from fatso to cult figure
Dum Laga Ke Haisha made great business in the last few
months, but Bollywood PR guru Dale Bhagwagar feels that
a bit of spin could have turned it into a cult movie; and its
lead actress Bhumi Pednekar into a cult figure.
The publicist who has handled the PR for everyone from
Hrithik Roshan, Govinda, Randeep Hooda, Vivek Oberoi,
Shilpa Shetty and Priyanka Chopra posted on his Facebook
that inspite of some scenes appearing a bit contrived, the
movie was overall lovable.
Praising Bhumi Pednekar, who starred opposite
Ayushmann Khurrana, Dale said, "she was a delight to
watch and that her mischievous half-smile was endearing.”
But the public relations specialist lamented that though
Bhumi's performance was wonderfully restrained, her PR
didn't have to be. "This girl can actually be a thought
leader, by breaking conventional thinking patterns.
Wonder why she hasn't been branded on those lines, and
instead just as a fatso opposite a thin hubby. Guess
someone is missing the real bigger picture," he wrote on
the social media platform.
So true! She may just need that little bit of image
tweaking, what Dale terms as "brand correction.” "In real
life, she no longer seems to carry as much weight either.
But that needs to be plugged in the media intelligently," he
adds. We hope Bhumi positions herself smartly and bags a
lot more varied projects in future.

Till the time you are dependent on the good
opinion of others, you will be scared of
being your true self. Constant need of
approvals and good opinion of others also at
times throws you off from reaching your
own goals and happiness. It alters your
focus from what you really want and
becomes a biggest obstacle for getting to
your happiness.

going in for crepes and saris with chicken
work now.
“Today when everything is IndoWestern, why should saris not be part of the
trend? I like vibrant colours like reds,
orange, greens, blues, etc. Also, the blouse
is given a lot of emphasis. I generally wear
blouses with short sleeves and a deep neck,”
says newly married Minali Sengupta.
Since Mumbai's climate is hard to
differentiate, except during the Monsoon,
most people say that saris of all kinds can be
worn here. The new trend though is to wear
printed saris with a lot of embroidery. Our
range starts from Rs. 3500 to Rs.35,000.
The Gujarati saris have heavy work on the
pallu because of the way they are draped.
Maximum variation is found in georgette
and crepe,” says the owner of a sari shop.
“I like the concept of ready to wear saris,
which are worn just like a skirt. It is so much
easier. Its been five years since I've married
but I just cannot drape a sari the right way,”
says Neelu Sarin, a homemaker.
“The new rage in saris is chicken work,”
says Mrs Sethi, the owner of a sari shop in
Bandra. She continues, “The style is
basically Indo-Western. We also give people
an idea on the way the blouse should be
designed for a particular sari. Crop tops as a
substitute for blouses is another trend that is
ongoing and saris are being draped in a
manner that they look chic and stylish.”
Almost everyone agrees that the pallu
and the blouse can make a huge difference

can you get? Our society is a big community
and everyone has their own set of beliefs
and likes and dislikes. In order to please
everyone you will tend to start draining
your own energy and become a fake person
and end up unpleasing most of them. True
and honest people are those who are honest
to themselves. True people follow their
intuition, heart and soul even at great risk.
Our nature teaches us so much, the sun rises
every morning and sets in the evening - the
sun knows it purpose. There are plenty of
people criticizing the sun to be so hot and
some approve of the way it is. Still it keeps
doing what it has to listening to its inner
calling. It doesn't changes its calling just to
be approved or get good opinion of others.
Be the Sun of your life, be independent of
the good opinions of others and follow your
own calling .it will lead you to the true
happiness.

THE NINE YARDS MAGIC
GUHAGAR
GO BEYOND MALSHEJ GHAT
With its misty mountains and unlimited waterfalls, Malshej Ghat is
a hugely popular monsoon weekend getaway. Most people from
Mumbai travel to Malshejghat via Kalyan for a day trip or a weekend
trip. Here is another alternative. Hit the Mumbai-Pune expressway
and take a left at Wadgaon to Chakan and then proceed to
Narayangaon and Junnar. Stay overnight at Junnar. Spend the
evening at Shivneri fort. Leave early morning. Drive from Junnar to
Lenyadri and then to Malshejghat. The drive from Junnar to Malshej
ghat is simply awesome. Stop for lunch at Malshejghat. Laze around
and reach Mumbai by late evening.
SAPUTARA
Saputara is a tiny hill station in Gujarat, at the MaharashtraGujarat border. Snuggled in the tribal district of Dangs, Saputara has
some interesting drives through the forests and by the rivers. Take off
to Nashikfrom Mumbai and then via Dindori and Vani to Saputara,
travelling for around 250 kilometres. Stay overnight at Saputara.
Gujarattourism has hotelsand there are a few private hotels as well.
Walk to the sunset point, and to the sunrise point the next morning.
For the return, take a circular trip once again. Return via Waghai,
Vansda, Chikli and Valsad (a total of 345 km). Stop by the massive
Gira waterfalls before Vansda. Vansda National Parkis closed during
monsoons.
IGATPURI VIA JAWAHAR
Igatpuri is also a well-known and popular weekend destination.
However, for the pleasure of driving during the monsoon, take this
longish route. Get on to the Western Expressway. About 60
kilometres away from Borivali is Manor. Take a right and via
Vikramghad, reach Jawahar. At about 1800 feet above sea level,
Jawahar is also a mini hill station. Either stay overnight at Jawahar
with some local sightseeingthrown in or head straight to Igatpuri.
Igatpuri also some options to stay. Return via Shahapur, Kalyan and
Thane.
COASTAL RIDE TO GUHAGAR
Take the Mumbai-Goa highway till Khed. At Khed, get out of the
highway and take a right to Dapoli. From Dapoli, head to Dhabol.
Take your vehicle across the river on a boat and head to Guhagar.
Guhagar is one street town with clean beaches. There are hotels, but
look for a homestay. Everyone in the village knows each other and
someone will guide you. Next morning, head to Velneshwar
beachand then to Chiplun. From Chiplun, head back to Mumbai
through the Mumbai-Goa highway.
COASTAL RIDE TO HARIHARESHWAR VIA MURUDJANJIRA
Mumbai to Alibaug and then to Murud. One option is to stay
overnight at Murud. Though the beach is clean, it might get
overcrowded on weekends. A better option might be to continue to
Hairhareshwar on the same day. Take the narrow roads through
various villages to Srivardhan and then to Harihareshwar.
Harihareshwar has a niceMTDC resort. There are a few private
resorts as well. Head back to Mumbai next day around lunchtime.

Weatherproof your make-up
As you probably know, rain, heat and
humidity are not your face's friends.
Step out of the AC, and within minutes,
your foundation threatens to melt, eye
make-up pools under your eye in a notso-cute interpretation of panda face,
and all of this, of course, doesn't help
the general mood of gloom. Don't
worry – we've got just the products
and tips to help you keep your face on
and your vibe upbeat through the day.
Invest in a good primer: A primer gives your base
something to hold on to and helps it stay on through the day.
Layer over your moisturiser, wait a couple of minutes and
apply foundation.
Pick the right base: Check the label on your foundation
and pick one that says long lasting. Use a sponge or brush for
an even finish, and set it with translucent powder or compact
to seal it in completely.
Get waterproof make-up: Regular eye make-up is an
absolute no in the monsoon, unless you like streaks of it
running down your face. Mascara, eyeliner, kajal – everything
should be waterproof. The good part of this is that waterproof
make-up is hard to budge, so no smudgy eyes, yay! The bad
part is that it's hard to take off, so make sure you have the
right kind of remover.
Add a bit of pop: Nothing lifts your mood better than a
nice cheerful mani or lip. Keep your favourites handy – hot
pink, coral and bright reds all work great and immediately
make you look brighter

Mewati Sitaram
One of the leading airlines of the world, Singapore Airline
(SIA) has come out with a unique concept of serving Indian
food for their first class passengers. It is named as Shahi Thali

It may be noted that SIA is probably only airline in the
world which has International Culinary Panel (ICP) which
consists of eight renowned chefs of the World. Master Chef
Sanjeev Kapoor from India is on their panel for last nine years.
Prior to this Master Chef Satish Arora was on their panel for
almost seven years.

Angeline Khoo, VP said “Although we have introduced
Shahi Thali for first class passengers. We are also
contemplating to serve Shahi Thali for business class
passengers too in near future. It is not easy to launch
anything on board so quickly as various factors are
involved from ground to air and in cabin. We are doing
thorough research and development before launching it
which is already ongoing”.
Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor said “The emphasis is on
a modern, elegant and high class dining experience yet
retaining traditional elements. To ensure that meal
components and serving style is rooted in traditional
Indian cuisine. Indeed it’s a good effort by SIA to
conceptualize this idea. We were working on it since 2013
and finally it’s here”.

in Mumbai, he joined Swami Vivekananda College at Chembur for
pursuing his higher secondary education. He joined Sophia Polytechnic
for catering course.
What made you to join the hotel industry?
I always liked to see and part of hotel industry as I had no idea of how a
Five star works. It was a greed for eating food of different kind and from all
over the World. This only can happen if you are part of culinary profession.
This hunger to know more about global cuisine inspired me to be a part of
culinary journey. It's a known fact that being a chef wasn't a big profession
about 25 years back and very few opted for it. Everyone wanted to be in
smart attire of suit culture in hotel.
Any family members in the hotel industry?
There was no one from my family in hotel industry those days. My wife
is a homemaker, but keeps
herself occupied by making
cakes. She is now a home
baker. But looking back,
I'm so happy that I took the
time to prototype my career
options, I learned more and
more from leading chefs
and refined my skill. After
seeing my success, I am a
role model to my family
members many want to
follow my footsteps. I
consider it to be a great
achievement.
Journey in Culinary:
After completing hotel
management, he started a
decade long career with the
Taj Mahal Hotel, Mumbai.
After gaining thorough
induction in all kitchens of
Taj Mahal hotel, he worked
at their premier fine dine
restaurant, the Zodiac Grill,
a brainchild of well-known
chef Hemant Oberoi. The
journey went ahead and he
joined the country's first celebrity restaurant, Tendulkar's, a restaurant
owned by World Famous Cricketer “Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar,” as
its Executive Chef. After a successful term in India, he moved to Dubai as
the Executive Chef of the Modern Indian Fine Dine Restaurant at the Souk
of Madinat.
Something different: After gaining good exposure overseas, he
returned to India and decided to do something new other than being a chef.
He threw his cap to enhance his managerial skills. He joined Impresario
Entertainment and Hospitality Pvt Ltd (IEHPL) as the Business Head of
their fine dine division. Here he opened a total of seven restaurants across
three cities, which included the Salt Water and Smoke House Deli brands.
Back to hotel: In July 2009, Chef Paul took over as the Executive Chef
of Inter Continental Marine Drive, helming their signature restaurants
'Kebab Korner', 'Corleone' and 'Dome'. He was part of the core team that
developed 'KOH' and 'Long and Short'. Chef Paul's menus speak his
language - they showcase seasonal produce, premium fresh ingredients,
and simple uncomplicated flavours; are high on visual appeal and sublime
textures; and come together to evoke a crescendo of delight.
Ongoing development: For the past year, he is working as the Director
Culinary at the Phoenix mills, started off at the Palladium hotel and opened
award winning restaurants including Sahib room and Yuuka. He is
currently in the process of transition and handing over the hotel to
renowned Starwood group. He is involved with the food and beverage
division of Phoenix. He is in the process of opening numerous restaurants
in the malls at Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Chennai.
Message to chef entrant: Hard work, the fire in the belly to do
something different is what sets you apart. Believe in yourself, invest in
eating out, buy books, cook from your heart, hard work will eventually
pay.
My Goa: My ultimate goal is to have a restaurant with a small menu of
fresh local produce. I am sure I can do it in near future. I'm not a
materialistic person. I don't like buying things and I have very simple
tastes. I like eating simple foods, living in simple houses and keeping
simple items. Owning more stuff doesn't make me happy and I place far
more value on the things that can't be bought.

Out of sight, out of mind!
Media has played an important role
in reporting and providing relief to
those affected in quake-hit Nepal.
Crores of rupees were collected and
tons of relief material found its way
to the disaster struck areas.
The coverage was extensive, but
as expected, most of it seems to
have faded from mass memory.
Though the electronic media
deserves an applaud for a job well
done, many questions now crop up
in my mind; more than two months
of Mother Nature unleashing her
fury. The most important question
being what is happening right now?
Lives of victims could not have
possibly returned to normalcy in the
last few weeks. What really
happened to the money collected?
How many people have really
benefitted from the relief material?
Have most houses been built?
Politicians, NGOs and actors
made their rounds when the
cameras were focussed on
devastation and once our cameras
moved, most people seem to have
done the disappearing act. It is a
known fact that public memory is
short, and that it is not new for the
masses to blame the media when it
comes to not focussing on certain
issues.
It is true that the media has a
social responsibility, and that
journalism as an ideology is meant
to do a lot more than what it does.
But it is important to understand
that as much as the media is
supposed to impact society, the
society also impacts media. The
media has the potential to build
public opinion and public discourse,
but the media, as a unit of the
society, is bound to be affected by
them as well. In reality, the people
forget because the media forgets;
the media forgets because the
people forget.
A maximum of India's
population lives in rural areas. So
more than a majority of India's

Alone And Lonely:
What's That?
Bindu Midha
BEFORE: It is certainly a little awkward to sit by yourself
sipping coffee or watching a film or taking a walk or even
having a meal whilst the others around you have
company. Their tinkling laughter and sundry conversation
seems to unsettle as you are by yourself moping about
the presence of that someone who would offer you
company. Sometimes being by yourself at home too is a
challenging time as we wait eagerly for the doorbell to
ring and even if it is a salesman to sell a welcome relief.
The day is saved and so is the mood.
Or is it? Does it not actually tantamount to time lost? A depletion from the
precious me time, the time to spend with yourself, do little things that you would
like to do in your own company. Isn't that what this alone time is all about?
Shouldn't it be a time to rejoice in, to celebrate rather than feel despondent and
despair? It is like a bonus, an unexpected one at that, to venture into a number
of activities that you would actually like to take up but couldn't manage on
account of lack of 'self-time'. Like many other individuals, I too would feel quite
insecure in my own company. But after much thought and experience the Eureka
moment dawned- IF I DON'T ENJOY BEING WITH ME THEN WOULD ANY
OTHER INDIVIDUAL BE HAPPY TO BE WITH ME?
So I decided: Alone, yippee, time to relax and pamper myself!
AFTER: Peace descended. I picked up pieces of my crestfallen self and began

'drastic changes' nor the 'quality of
media.' For them the media is
limited to local newspapers they
get. I don't blame them. When you
have to work day and night to earn
less than what can support your
family, when all the news that
matters to you is whether there
would be timely rainfall or not,
when you feel your dreams getting
fulfilled just by reading in the local
paper that the local politician would
be building a well in the elections,
you wouldn't care about the news
you get anyways.
When it comes to the medium of
news, unlike the newspaper,
television allows viewers to witness
news events as they occur. The
result is two-fold: It lends
importance to the event by virtue of
the fact that it is being covered by
television and the presence of
television changes the nature of the
event being covered and can attract
phenomenal response from viewers.
Whereas for the masses, if we
actually think
we live in a
democracy,
let's think
again. We
haven't been a
true democracy for some time now.
Why? Because a democracy
depends on an informed populace.
Where do we get this information?
How do we get this information?
And what kind of information do
we want?
It is high time the society and
media work in tandem to not forget
issues that have affected scores of
people at the global level. While the
media must air programmes and
write information on the
development and the condition of
grief stricken areas, the masses
should engage in seeking more and
more interest in the same so that the
media can achieve such
information. Let's together make
platform to work towards a better
society...and carve out a better
future.
to enjoy doing things around the house and outside it for myself. I began to read
voraciously, almost greedily, as if to catch up for the time gone past. I began to
walk and needless to say gained in more ways than one. No longer did I feel
envious of the couples who swished past me. I revelled in the glory of being able
to breathe deeply, observe my environs and fellow walkers and absorb the
enriching experiences. And the loss was only where it ought to be- the endlessly
irksome-'wait' and weight! Suddenly, my surroundings became greener and
more alluring. An occasional visit to a coffee shop, shopping for groceries,
evening walks left me with millions of experiences to write about. I felt
prosperous. So, what made the transition, the transformation possible? Just one
decision: I AM HAPPY TO BE BY MYSELF TOO. So am I classified as a social?
Certainly not! I revel as much in company of others as I much as I do of my own!
Except now, I no longer feel at sea when I do not see a human presence in the
vicinity.
Undoubtedly, we need company but we can choose to be self-contained in its
absence. There's always so much to do and catch up with. So let us become our
own wish granting fairy and puff- stay engaged! Some ways to enjoy me-time:
• Declutter all: your mind & body. Shelves, cupboard, fridge!
• Catch up on your beauty sleep.
• Indulge in exercises, do yoga and meditate. Silence helps.
• Go window shopping .
• Volunteer help to someone in need-teach a child, chat with an elderly.
• Enhance knowledge and use it to create.
• Travel down memory lane. Dust those albums, cards, letters. Use ideas
obtained in the present!
• Do things you have left behind- cycling, swimming, trekking, making paper
boats.
• Most importantly, forget that you are alone, you are only with yourself!
So, enjoy being alone, and don't feel lonely. Spend me time wisely. You are
your best friend.

Dear Editor,
Thank you for the elaborate coverage
on Ramzan and hotspots on where
one should eat. This has been a very
informative report. Even though I
live in Andheri, I was unaware of the
spread of delicacies at S.V.Road. So
this time, I made a trip there. Must
mention, the food was nothing but lip
smacking. I usually only go to
Mohammed Ali Road, but this was
way different of an experience. All
thanks to your elaborate and
informative coverage. Thank you

Dear Editor,
Thank you for highlighting the plight
of Andheri's RTO residents. The
place here, especially where the RTO
is, is extremely dark and dim. One
cannot dare to venture that side post
sunset. It is a very dangerous thing
because a number of untoward
incidents can take place in the dark
and this can become a safe haven for
drug dealers. I request the authorities
to take action and light up the lane so
that such nuisance does not exist.
Thank you

To the Editor,
The article on the Edubuzz page on
Cultivating reading habits among
children is very good. This gives
insights into various ways that one
can cultivate an interest for reading
among children. Such habits, the
sooner, imbibed, the better it is. My
child is aged 10 but she rarely takes
interest in reading books. This article
has given me insights into how to
channelise her energy and make her
fond of reading books. I am hoping
that after sharing this with my
friends, they too start to cultivate the
same habit among their children.
Great read for every parent.

Dear Editor
I loved your article: Road rage and
its issues. Well, Mumbai traffics have
always been hectic. Its acts as a
spoiler to your entire day and, yes
even I am a lady driver. So, it's even
sadder how people have a pre
conceived notion about our driving
skills. My office is in Nariman Point
and I have to drive all the way back
to Goregaon the entire journey
transforms into a headache with the
honking and hawkers right in the
middle of the road. Hopefully, there
is soon a solution to this.

Dear Editor
I read your story: Yakub Memon
awaits final order to hang or not to
hang. This news has been flooding
since quite some time now. The very
unfortunate event of 1993, which
took the life of 257 people injured
over 700 people and our country lost
property of more than Rs.20 crore for
the same. The case has finally drawn
its conclusion by sentencing this
person. However, it is indeed painful
to note the exorbitant delay in our
judiciary system network. There
should be faster track of such
sensational case at least in future.

What is the proper skin care routine
to follow during the monsoon? I am
pretty strict with mine. I wash my

do? - Rajeeta Malik, 35
During Monsoon, weather is Humid

infections are higher. As you are
washing your face 3 times a day,
careful about the soaps/facewashes
you use. Most these products
contains detergents and causes
dryness of skin. I would recommend
you to get a gentle soap free
facewash for the same.
Auras have been written and talked about since thousands of years. Though this
remains to be a fact, many of us are confused as to what exactly it means.
Basically our physical body is surrounded by a body of a more subtle nature. This
body reflects what is going on in the physical body, often the more dense physical
body shows any symptoms, which reflect various states of our body, referred to
as the aura.
The auras of a person relates to the colours emitted by him, hence to
understand the same, it is important to understand colours and their meanings.
Our eyes can detect only a small portion of the visible spectrum, each colour
pours unseen powers, which interact with us and influence our lives. Red, yellow
and blue relate to the body, mind and soul. The primary colours, along with other
colours try to bridge the gap between the physical and the spiritual.
When we are considering auras, there is no good or bad colour and classifying
the colours would mean seeing with a coloured vision. Everything has a proper
place in life, hence when a particular colour shows up in the aura, it indicates
certain traits and tendencies.
The colours are also associated with the endocrine glands, which are
connected to the activity of the chakras or psychic centres of the body. Each
colour of the rainbow corresponds to a chakra and hence to an endocrine gland.

knees bent and shortening some of the tissues in the legs for long periods of
time. Stretching the hamstrings, along the back of the thighs, will help prevent
and tightness, keep you limber, and help reduce injury. This stretch also helps to
stretch the chest and lengthen the spine. Stand at your desk and push your chair
out behind you. Place your hand on your desk and walk back until your arms and
back are both straight. Bring your feet right under your hips, so your legs are
straight. Hold in this deep stretch for five breaths. After five breaths, you can
release or take it deeper by widening your feet and pressing your hips further
back. Hold for an additional five breaths. Chair Twist: When sitting all day, it is
easy to start to slump or even lean to one side, causing your spine and torso to
shift in all different directions. Overtime, these habits can start to cause tension
and poor posture. To help regain some strength and length along the spine,
twisting will help. This is similar to "cracking" you back or what you might
experience at a chiropractor. Sit on the very edge of your seat, with your feet on
the ground and your legs together. Sit as tall as you can, without leaning back or
slouching forward. Keep your hips and legs steady as you twist from the waist up
the spine, turning to the right. Bring your right hand behind you, either to the
back edge of your seat, or resting your arm on a low backrest. Place your left
hand across your right thigh, along the outer edge. See if you can turn all the way
to the side, so your chest faces the right and your head turns to look behind you.
Hold for five breaths and switch sides.
Is it okay to squeeze a blackhead or
pimple? - Rohit Verma, 18
No you should squeeze a pimple as
it might end up creating a bad scar if
the contents of it blast inside the
dermal layer. Ask your doctor who
might use a comedone extractor for
doing the same and will help in the
faster resolution of your pimples.

It is possible to photograph the aura above the head and give suitable
interpretation, depending on the colours. The photograph over the body shows
the energy flow and the bad energy causing the blockages is easily identified.
The photograph shows the size, shape and form of the disease.
To capture this aura, Dr Sachdev, an Aura Photographer says, “A special
software and hardware is connected to my computer and video camera. The
person is told to stand 8 to 10 feet away, against a white background, where a full
spectrum light is projected on him or her. Once this is captured by a camera, we
are able to see the enrgy field on our computer with the help of the software.”
The parameters of Aura such as colours, shape, evenness and uniformity
change dynamically over a period of time in response to the environment, which
is also affected by everyday factors such as daily stress, hatred, noise and the
like. These factors should be carefully guarded against as they cause the aura to
shrink in protection and create a tear that may be difficult to deal.
Our auras are like magnets picking up vibrational energies that are floating
around wherever we go. It is important to cleanse our auras freeing them of
foreign vibrations and negative energies. Dr Sachdev gives a few simple methods
to cleanse our aura such as bathing with salt water, immersing the body in an
Epsom salt bath, cleaning with bird feathers (Peacock, turkey or owl), praying,
walking barefoot on Earth for sometime, running freely and playfully in the wind,
taking a bath in the river, sea or lake or standing under a waterfall, doing Golden
light or White light meditation and grounding effectively with suitable exercises.
Also, since thousands of years, there has also been a common belief of halos
being around saintly people, but the fact is that it around each one of us, though
more prominently shown around them. Moreover, these signify who we are and
what is our expression in life.

For most people who work 8 or more hours a day, being stuck at a desk doesn't
just hinder the amount of physical activity you get in a day, it can also tax the
body in many other ways. Sitting still may make you feel stiff and sore, your head
might feel foggy, and your energy levels are sure to dip. To help keep your body
moving and your head clear, try a few stretches you can do right at your desk and
mostly in your seat.
Shoulder Stretch and Fold: Stretching your shoulders can help reduce
stiffness along the shoulders and neck that builds up from typing and staring at a
computer for hours on end. It can also help reduce any stress or tension that you
might be holding in that area. Sit on the edge of your chair, pushed away from
your desk. Reach your arms behind you and clasp your hands together, with your
palms facing each other and your fingers interlaced. Stretch your arms down and
away from your back as you lift your chest and roll your shoulder-blades together.
Hold for five breaths. After your fifth breath, keep your hands clasped and fold
forward. See if you can bring your torso to your thighs and let your head drop in
front of your knees. This will help to release tension in the neck. Hold for five
Vicco urges the use of natural toothpastes
The majority of toothpastes in the market today are manufactured under cosmetic manufacturing licenses and they
use chemicals disregarding the health of the people. This was revealed by the European Union's Scientific Committee
when it disclosed its findings on Triclosan, a chemical used in toothpastes.
The committee has pointed out that Triclosan is harmful to health because it could pose risks to a consumer who
takes antibiotics for various disorders. It reduces the effectiveness of antibiotics as it promotes widespread bacterial
resistance.
“Studies have shown that it can trigger gene mutations in bacteria, enabling them to protect themselves,” says
Sanjeev Pendharkar, Director of Vicco Laboratories. “When this happens, the bacteria release proteins, which transport
this new found protection to other bacteria. This cross resistance has the potential to undermine the effectiveness of
antibiotics and other life-saving medicines.” Even the US Food and Drugs Administration (USFDA) has found
evidence that Triclosan is a hormone disruptor.
Despite such bad reports, Triclosan is commonly used. The various toothpaste manufacturing companies telecast
glamorous advertisements to grab global market share, which is a sort of goldmine for them. Is it not important to take
into consideration consumer safety first, rather than misleading valuable customers by way of luring advertisements?
This is the priority of the USFDA and the Health Ministry of the UAE. Therefore, people nowadays prefer herbal
products and make sure that natural ingredients are used to produce toothpaste.
When small children used toothpaste, the chemicals that are used come in contact with the mucous membrane
beneath the tongue. If any toothpaste contains fluoride, when used by children it diffuses into the blood by way of
systemic absorption, resulting in the development of skeleton fluorosis. The various bones of the body become brittle,
if such fluoride-containing toothpaste is swallowed.
Thus, publishing warnings on toothpaste covers should be made compulsory to avoid disastrous side effects.

Hello mam, my name is Sumit .I love pasta but I have heard that pasta makes
you fat... is it true?
Hi Sumit,
When you eat carbohydrates, your body turns them into sugars, which are then
stored as fat – a major concept in nutrition and diet. But you have to understand one
thing that Carbohydrates per se don't make you fat; extra calories do, whether you eat
them in the form of carbs, fats, or protein. Besides, carbohydrates include vegetables,
fruits, and whole grains, which are important parts of a healthy diet. In short, the
problem isn't pasta but the amount consumed. So pasta in moderation is fine. We do
recommend one to two cups of pasta per person. This may look like a puny amount,
but try thinking of "pasta as an ingredient, rather than as the basis of a dish. Add a lot of
grilled or sautéed vegetables and maybe a tomato-based sauce. Then add some pasta,
sparingly. If you want to have protein, then one can add beans, chicken or paneer. Use
whole-grain pasta which has more vitamins and minerals than white pasta. You'll also
be getting fibre, which helps you prevent constipation and unnecessary weight.
Hi I want to lose weight but to do that do I have to leave fat completely like eat
boiled dal n chicken etc. - Pulkit Aggarwal
Hi Pulkit,
The theory is fat has nine calories per gram, whereas carbs and protein have only
four per gram, so to lose weight you have to avoid fat. But Fat is not the enemy.
Although fat-laden products can be full of calories, a modest amount of fat may help
you feel full (so you eat less overall) and make healthy foods, like vegetables, taste
better (so you may eat more of them). Fat also helps with the absorption of certain
vitamins and phytonutrients, which are compounds in plants that are thought to
promote health. Eat fat, but don't go overboard. And eat healthy fats. Choose
monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, found in liquid oils such as canola,
safflower, and olive; most nuts; and fish. These fats don't raise blood cholesterol levels
and may reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. The fats to limit or avoid are
saturated fats, found mainly in beef and dairy products, and transfats, which are in a lot
of packaged foods, fried fast foods, and margarine. These are full of calories and
harmful to the body. Also they increase the risk of heart disease. Therefore, when it
comes to saturated fat, cholesterol, and trans fats, eat as little as possible.

MCX Launches
Gold Global
Futures Contract
MUMBAI: Further expanding its bullion
product suite, India's No. 1 commodity
exchange, Multi Commodity Exchange
of India Ltd. (MCX) last week
announced the launch of its unique
and innovative futures contract, Gold
Global, subsequent to receiving
permission from the Forward Markets
Commission (FMC). This contract
started being available for trade on the
Exchange from, July 14.
Gold Global is an international price
based contract, exclusive of import
premium, customs duty, sales tax/VAT,
and domestic market premium among
others. The contract has been
designed keeping in mind the
requirements of refiners, exporters,
jewellers, including larger bullion
physical market participants, involved
in import of gold bars and re-export of
jewellery. These stakeholders having
significant exposure to international
gold prices, need to effectively hedge
against any adverse movement in
prices.
The existing Gold futures contracts
traded on MCX have been providing an
efficient hedging mechanism to the
market participants exposed to
changes in Gold landed prices, which
mirrors the Indian spot market
perfectly. However, a category of
physical participants including Indian
refiners, exporters, and jewellers are
looking for contracts with less
international basis risk and protection
against adverse international price
movements and this contract will cater
to their needs perfectly.
IMAGE CONSULTANTS
for those who want to be different
Every person wants to become a refined personality and
wants to look better and different than the others. How to
transform any individual is an important task. There are
many individuals who look good and talented but lack
confidence and are unable to handle various tasks. Here
comes the image consultant in the picture. And Image
consultant transforms tough nuts and makes them
confident to handle odd situations at all times. Most leading
organisations Public, Private or corporates are spending
good money on image consultants which is a global trend.
MEWATI SITARAM, senior Journalist has a candid talk
with MAMTA JAIN, a leading Image Consultant on Board,
Air India Mumbai- Delhi flight.
What is Image Consultancy?
Image Consultancy is a holistic programme which
transforms a person completely in terms of personality,
thinking, dressing, outlook and many more aspects. Image
consultants all over the world act as doctors who treat the
body and soul of an individual.
How did you think if becoming an image
consultant?
Every human being is destined to certain things in life
which appear in the mind automatically or you get to know
through various sources. I was pretty much in despair and
unhappy with my life, a thought of chasing my dreams yet
again came into lime light.
One day, I saw an
advertisement in the newspaper related to becoming an
Image Consultant and decided to go for its orientation
programme to get a better insight. After realizing what
Image Consultancy was all about, I enrolled myself. From
the day I finished my course till today, I have never looked
back.
Are you happy as an Image consultant?
Becoming an Image Consultant was the biggest
milestone in my life. I have absolutely transformed my life
and now I am doing the same with others. Currently, I am
doing one on one consultation and also conducting various
workshops on the related subject. I also have a proposal to
help mentally challenged people. My journey so far has
been remarkable.
How do you rate image consultancy in your life?
Image consultancy is an art that transforms a person.
Your thought process changes and there is a hunger in you
to do something different than the rest.
Is image consultancy a full time job?
No it is not. It involves choosing your own working hours
that would come to help you in taking care of your family
and other activities. I have achieved all this, which helped
me in taking care of my family side by side.
What is the basic qualification to become an
Image Consultant?
It must be understood that when it comes to guiding
someone to become more successful, it is a relative skill. It
means that the consultant needs to be better in terms of
exposure and skills as compared to the person he/she is
guiding. Anyone with a desire to help people change their
lives can become an Image Consultant.
Is there scope post completion of course?
The sky is the limit for Image Consultants and also a
huge market. It is reported on consumer trends lists and in
business books as one of the fastest growing businesses in
today's service economy. So many people are not satisfied
with their Image and don't know where to start to make
improvements. They are willing to pay Image Consultants
to save their Image anxiety, time and effort.
Which organisations take services of IC?
All types of organisations - private, public and
government take the services of Image Consultants, IC's
deal with all kinds' of clients from the corporate sectors,
schools, colleges and NGOs. Most of the organization does
IC periodically.
Does it really help organisations to transform the
image of their employees?
It's like a doctor prescribing medicine for a patient. If
he/she takes the medicine as prescribed, he/she will be
treated. The same applies to ICs also. We are the doctors
who treat the body and soul of a person and if he/she
follows what is advised, then definitely the transformation
happens.

AN ODE TO MY FRIEND RAJESH KHANNA
I first met Rajesh Khanna in
1977 at the house of Mr
Chetan Anand, the noted
Producer Director. Rajesh
Khanna was a regular at
Chetan saab's house at Juhu
and office at Bandra. There
was a special bond between
the two as it was Chetan saab
who gave kakaji his first break
Baljeet Parmar
in Hindi moviedom.
My bond with kakaji
matured over the years and we developed a close circle
of friends like Narendra Bedi, S.S.Broca, Randhir
Kapoor and Siddharth Achcha Anant among others. We
shared intimate moments over a few pegs of drinks and
the card playing sessions.
The relationship was further cemented during the 42
days strike by the entire Hindi film industry in 1985
when Rajesh Khanna was made in charge of Press
relations wing of the entire Hindi film industry. A media
room was established at kakaji's Khar office and he
requested me to help him and the industry in
interacting with the print media in Mumbai, as I was
already an established media person by then. We used
to prepare Press releases, photographs and information
tit bits for the media concerning activities of the film
industry.
For almost over a month, Rajesh Khanna's office
was my second home where Randhir Kapoor, Achcha
Anant, Rajesh Khanna and Amjad Khan used to hold
daily meetings, planning new methods of protests and
agitations against the government of the time.
After the film industry strike, Rajesh Khanna became
an active politician and joined the Indian National
Congress and later became a member of Parliament
too. During that time, I was asked by my newspaper
management to contest Mumbai Munjicipal Corporation
Election in an effort to gather inside information about
the conduct and outcome of the local corporation
elections. I filed my nomination papers from Sion –
Kolivada ward and solicited support from Punjabi film
and theatre personalities as my constituency was
dominated by Punjabi community. Dara Singh, Mangal
Dhillol, Rana Rang Bahadur, Rama Vij were among
several noted personalities who openly came out to
campaign in my support. During that period, Rajesh
Khanna was invited by my opponent Congress Party
candidate Harbans Singh Julka to canvass for Congress
votes. When Rajesh Khanna started speaking from the
dais, he noticed one of my banners hung opposite the
stage.
What happened later was a stunning blow to the
Congress candidate and a blessing in disguise for me.
Rajesh Khanna started his speech by saying and I quote
- “Dear friends, before I came here, to campaign for the
Congress candidate, I never knew that my childhood
friend Baljeet Parmar is also one of the contestants.
Baljeet is a nice person, honest and hardworking. And I
appeal to all of you to vote for a hardworking and
sincere candidate.”
The Congress candidate was in tears as Rajesh
Khanna had wittingly or unwittingly campaigned in my
favour instead of the candidate he came for. Later that
evening, I called kakaji and asked him why he
embarrassed the poor Congress candidate. Kakaji
replied, “For me, friendship is much more important
than politics or elections.”
That was the bond we shared till Rajesh Khanna's
untimely death. We shared personal tragedies,
misfortunes and achievements. There was a time when
he was passing through a bad phase after the income
tax authorities had attached almost all his property and
bank accounts over payment of tax dues. It was not the
case that kakaji was broke, but he couldn't touch his
own money due to legal restraints.
One of those days, my friend Gur Waryam Singh,
(who recently retired as Secretary of Cultural affairs and
Director of Public Relations, Government of Punjab)
along with his family came down to Mumbai on a
private visit. He knew about my friendship with Rajesh
Khanna and desired to meet the superstar. I took the
family to Rjesh Khanna's Khar office where kakaji was
sitting alone in a white kurta pyjama. There was no
secretary and no servant at home. Rajesh Khanna
received the visitors with a warm smile and sought
permission to go out for few minutes for urgent work. It
transpired later that he had gone out to fetch a few
bottles of cold drinks to serve the guests.
That was one of the gestures myself and my friends
family will never be able to forget. That was Rajesh
Khanna, always smiling, laughing and hospitality
personified.
