With their latest studio release, I Yahn I Arkestra has once
again embarked on a musical journey unique in its approach,
rich in its complexity, and powerful in its musical delivery.
In their now signature style, the Arkestra successfully fuses
traditional reggae rythms with a psychedelic, improvisationoriented format, redefining what world, roots, reggae and dub
can mean both in the studio and on stage.
This most recent endeavour once again brings together the
Arkestra with master percussionist Doc Gibbs, as well as longtime Arkestra bassist Rah M Sungee, Michael Kordish on keys,
Timi “Timi TV“ Tanzania on organ and guitar, Charlie Patierno
on drums, and Rob McCall on lead guitar. Also featured on the
album are Louis Taylor, Jr. on sax and horn arrangements,
Henry McMillian on trumpet, Jermain Bryson on trombone, as
well as Chris Crafton and Neil Simpkins on drums.
From Shakamaxon finds the Arkestra hovering between
multiple genres at once—simultaneously placing the band
firmly within and far beyond the constraints of the traditional
‘world,’ ‘reggae’ and ‘dub’ labels. The album is infused with
lilting harmonies riding on top of lush, powerful, brilliant
soundscapes. Dub and rock-infused progressions—with complex percussion, and horns—lead the band into territory laced
with meaning, and consistently pushing the edge of what’s
expected. Never disappointing. Always exciting.
