More tradi onally, but very typical to the

Whats’
new ?
THE GREAT NORTH AREA
The “Great North” (“Grand Nord”) area at the Zoological and
Botanical Park has officially opened on 1 April 2014, with a
special area dedicated to polar bears. This brand new area of
10 000 m2 is designed to improve animals’ living condi ons,
make the park more energy-efficient, and raise public awareness
of the threat of climate change.
Muskoxen, great grey owls, snowy owls and arc c foxes were the
first animals to move into these new facili es in June 2013. The
Zoological and Botanical Park hosts a couple of polar bears -Tina,
a 3-year-old female, and Vicks, a male of the same age and Sesi,
a 27-year-old female.
The 1000 m2 enclosure has two areas, one to see the bears
under water, and a training pool for any bear cubs that are born.
Adjoining it is a maternity hut to separate females and males
during the gesta on period and maximise the chances of a future
birth.
The Great North area also has an educa onal role. A visitor’s trail
allows the public to see species from the Holarc c region, with
interac ve games. The goal is to educate all genera ons about
the problem of global warming and help them learn about the
ac on that needs to be taken to safeguard species in the Great
North.

PARC DU PETIT PRINCE
A theme park has opened its doors
on 1st July 2014, dedicated to the
Li le Prince and his wonderful world

event marks the 70th anniversary
of the death of the author who
created him, Antoine de SaintExupéry. A poe c project also fun

and more.
On the ground, on the Li le
Prince’s planet B612, there are 4
themes: Space, Avia on, Water
and Animals and Plants. In the
air, the planets of the King and
the Lamplighter, the names
given to two tethered balloons,
will float to a height of 150
metres for a breathtaking view
of the en re region, from the
Alps to Germany, and also the
Vosges mountains. Finally, the
planet of the Drinker, the name
given to the park’s aerobar, takes
visitors on an unusual trip, glass
in hand, to a height of 35 metres
with a spectacular 360° view.

In France, it has chosen Mulhouse as
its base, on the industrial wasteland
of the DMC tex le factory. At the
crossroads between three countries
(France, Switzerland and Germany),
it is the perfect place for giving body

CHINESE PRESIDENTIAL CAR :
HONG QI CA 770
The Cité de l’Automobile welcomes
the famous Chinese Presiden al
car: the Hong Qi CA 770, a model
from the 1970s. A er being restored
in China, this emblema c vehicle,
which used to belong to the former
leader of the People’s Republic of
China, Deng Xiaoping, comes to
the Cité de l’Automobile, thanks
to a dona on from Y. K. Wong, an
entrepreneur from Hong Kong.
For the occasion, the exhibi on
“Drapeau Rouge, soixante ans
d’histoire automobile chinoise” (Red
Flag, sixty years of Chinese automobile
history) was inaugurated and is open
to the public up un l 29 March 2015.
The hope of an en re na on, the
adventure of the Hong Qi (which means
“Red Flag”) entered the history books
and contributed to China becoming
one of the major players in the
automobile sector in the 20th century.
A er the release of the Dongfeng CA
71 car, commissioned by Chairman
Mao Zedong in 1958, the FAW
group (First Automobile Works)
presented an original crea on in
1965: the HONG QI type CA 770.
With an extremely accomplished
design, this limousine is a sort of
technical and stylis c summary
of the work of the designer,
Yanliang JIA, who was also a
painter and an industrial engineer.
The car’s lines are simple and pure,
the outline is elegant and clean
crea ng an idea of movement.
The interior fi ngs, which mirror
the bodywork, are understated, but,
nevertheless, make a few original
allusions to common references such
as the shape of Tiananmen gate on
the dashboard and the drawing of a
sunflower on the steering wheel.
Nicknamed the “Chinese Rolls Royce”,
the CA 770 was reserved for state
dignitaries and for welcoming foreign
heads of state. Thus the car donated
was used, among others, by Chairman
Den Xiao Ping between 1978 and 1992.
The 56530 cm3 V8 engine with
a 4-barrel carbure or offers 161
kW of power at 4400 rpm and
its maximum speed is 160 km/h.

THE TOWN’S MOST TYPICAL
DISTRICTS
The Cité Ouvrière and the Cité Manifeste
In the mid-19th century, people started to become
aware of the condi on of the working classes.
The industrialists founded the Mulhouse Society
of Workers’ Housing Developments (Société
Mulhousienne des Cités Ouvrières - SOMCO)
in 1853. It built 1 200 homes on 60 ha of land,
designed for the workers employed in the factories
of Mulhouse. It offered three types of construc on,
and finally the “Carré Mulhousien” (“Mulhouse
Square”), consis ng of four houses grouped
together under one roof, each with its own separate
garden, would change the face of social housing.
These houses enabled working families to own
property and therefore become more se led.
This scheme was one of France’s most successful
examples of the integra on of the working class by
the bourgeois industrial ruling class. Today, you can
enjoy a lovely walk among the poe cally named li le
alleys, and admire the small houses which have in
many cases been transformed by a series of owners.
12
2
Le Rebberg, home of the industrial bourgeoisie
The district of Le Rebberg also became a symbol of
Mulhouse’s prosperity. In order to provide workers
with wholesome distrac ons outside of work, a
group of industrialists and philanthropists from
Mulhouse decided to open a “people’s garden”
in 1868: walks, animals, gymnas cs, concerts...
These same industrialists played an ac ve role in
founding the Hasenrain hospital in the late 19th
century, by buying land which they then gave to the
town. However, it is the villas built by the captains
of enterprise on this former vineyard site that are
really worth a look. The large parcels of land enabled
the owners to create gardens full of plant species
from all over the world, and build masters’ houses
in styles inspired by many different influences and
architectural periods.
St-E enne Protestant Church
The Place de la Réunion, in the heart of the old town,
formerly known as Place Saint-E enne, was thus
named when Mulhouse became part of France in
1798. In the Middle Ages, it was already the centre
of poli cal, religious and economic life, as the site
where fairs and markets took place. Nowadays,
Place de la Réunion is s ll lined by a series of narrow,
colourful houses, which are among the oldest in the
town, along with the old Town Hall and the Saint
E enne Protestant Church.
This Protestant church was built
between 1858 and 1868, and
contains magnificent 14thcentury stained glass windows,
which used to be part of the old
Romanesque church that once
stood on this site. As the only
Protestant church to stand on
a main square in France, and
the tallest Protestant building
in the country, it confirms the
importance of this religion in the
town’s development
The former Town Hall
Built in 1552, this Renaissance
gem symbolises the small
republic’s a achment to its
liber es. The frescoes, repainted
in 1699 by the Mulhouse painter
Jean Gabriel following a fire,
illustrate the virtues extolled by
the reformed religion as well as
the coats-of-arms of the Swiss
cantons to which Mulhouse
was allied. Upon the right-hand
gable hangs the Klapperstein, or
“ra le stone”, which malicious
gossips were forced to wear
round their necks on market
days as punishment. The original
is preserved in the History
Museum.
The Nouveau Quar er, the symbol of
Mulhouse’s flourishing industry
In the 1820s, the town was suffoca ng behind
its medieval ramparts, due to the growing
number of factories and workers. Built from
1826 to 1841 near to the sta on, this business
district symbolises the success of Mulhouse’s
industrialists. It is also known as the Quar er de
la Bourse (the exchange district), as it contains
the Industrial Society building where the co on
exchange originally had its headquarters. Built
in the Empire style, it is also inspired by Rue de
Rivoli in Paris. The square’s triangular shape is a
sign of the industrialists’ links to Freemasonry.
This urban heritage became a listed historic
monument in 1986.

The museum is arranged into four sec ons. The “corridor” presents the adventure of vintage motorbikes to the sound of period music, in the form of a
parade. The “tous motards !” (“everyone’s a biker!”) exhibit lets visitors experience the joy of straddling and riding a vintage motorbike, as well as a documentary about motorcycle history and the representa on of motorbikes in
the main ar s c fields. The “dans le detail” (“in detail”) exhibi on is dedicated
to motorcycle parts. The last stage of the tour takes visitors behind the scenes
in the museum, its reserve and its workshop, where the Amis de la moto associa on restores the motorbikes

Museum of Printed Tex les
Founded in the 19th century by Mulhouse’s tex le factory owners to
provide an inexhaus ble source of inspira on, this excep onal museum
is a tes mony to Mulhouse’s industrial saga. It takes a look back at
leading figures in prin ng history, and displays industrial achievements
from all over the world. Its collec on highlights the role of prin ng in
the history of decora ve arts since the 16th century. Today, there are
over 6 million samples in this Museum’s excep onal collec on, a real
monument to Mulhouse’s industrial past. Pieces from this impressive
collec on are used in one or two major exhibi ons at the Museum every
year, in collabora on with leading designers (Hermès, Chris an Lacroix,
Prada, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac…) and are regularly lent to other
pres gious establishments. The pa erns stored in the archives remain a

from the most common to the most excep onal varie es, such as panoramic wallpaper.
By crea ng these extraordinary panoramic wallpapers over two centuries ago, our ancestors aimed to break through the overly narrow walls of their daily world. Come and

Fine Arts Museum
The journey through art history at the Fine Arts Museum
begins in the 15th century with the magnificent
Rheinfelden altarpiece. Then come the classical centuries,
represented by Brueghel, Boucher and Teniers. The 19th
century is the strong point of the collec ons, with Boudin,
Jongking, Géricault, Courbet and Bouguereau. Alsa an
ar sts are also well represented, in par cular JeanJacques Henner, who has a room dedicated to him. The
rooms on the 2nd floor contain contemporary crea ons:
interna onally renowned ar sts are invited there for
temporary exhibi ons, alterna ng with visual ar sts from
the Mulhouse area.

MULHOUSE,
a breath of fresh air
Mulhouse and its region provide a wonderfully green
environment for holidaymakers. The town has many
gardens and parks, which are home to some 13.665
trees, with 273 varie es. Our territory is also an ideal
star ng point for enjoying the most beau ful natural
spots: Sundgau, Vosges, banks of the Rhine...
The Zoological and Botanical Garden
The number 1 tourist a rac on in Haut-Rhin and the
3rd most popular in Alsace with 370.000 visitors per
year, the Zoological Garden is also one of the oldest
zoos in France, founded in 1868. It has 1.200 animals
belonging to 170 species, most of whom are rare due
to hun ng or the disappearance of their natural habitat. You can meet some excep onal animals here: Asian
lions, Siberian gers, Persian panthers, lemurs, Grevy’s
zebras, addax antelopes, and many more. There is
also a magnificent botanical collec on in a remarkable
landscaped se ng, which you can explore throughout
the year. A real treat for the senses!
The Jardins du Temps
Located just a few kilometres from Mulhouse, the Jardins du Temps, which carry the “Remarkable Garden”
label, seem to invite visitors on a journey. It comes as
no surprise to learn that these gardens were created
a few years ago by a couple who are passionate about
travel. They consist of 9 different areas, based on an
imaginary line formed by a kitchen garden, a maze, a
copse and a Virginia tulip tree, planted at the edge of
the park. The floral park boasts an excep onal variety
of colours, landscapes and plants.

Other parks and gardens of interest in
Mulhouse and its region
“Remarkable Garden” labelled gardens,
French and English-style gardens, parks
open to the public since the 19th century, a
triangular square reminding us of the freemasons... The gardens and parks of Mulhouse and the surrounding area each have
their own unique features, and confer great
botanical diversity on our territory. Here is a
selec on of just a few of them.
On the outskirts of Mulhouse, the Wallach Park, which carries the “Remarkable
Garden” label, is the only real French-style
garden in Mulhouse. Made in 1935 for the
industrialist Alfred Wallach, it contains a
rose garden with over 130 varie es as well
as a parterre de broderie (box hedges in an
elaborate scroll pa ern), a “res ng room”, a
small maze and a “green carpet” connected
by regular paths, as well as steps, statues
and sculpted plants.
The only English-style garden in Mulhouse,
the Square Steinbach, contains a number
of botanical treasures: a superb weeping
beech, beau ful Austrian black pines, a
hackberry tree from Virginia, and a Ginkgo.
This square was developed at the turn of
the previous century in the former park of
the Steinbach property, which has since become the Fine Arts Museum.
Developed in 1890, the Salvator Park is the
number one public park in Mulhouse. This
Roman c-style garden is best known for
its pond, with a small bridge across it, and
shell-shaped auditorium. This is the park
with the widest variety of species in the
town centre.
The town and all its partners
in the Mulhouse Urban
Area earned the Ville
Vélotouris que label in
2012.
A list of Ville Vélotouris que
partners is available on our
website and in the guided
named “Mulhouse, Ville
vélotouris que”.
Further afield
The Mulhouse area is an ideal star ng
point for accessing the Wine Route or the
Ballon des Vosges Regional Nature Park.
The 32 towns, which include the Mulhouse
Urban Area and Porte de France Rhin Sud,
offer a variety of landscapes: from typical
Alsa an villages to the old potash mines,
from the banks of the Rhine to the start of
the Sundgau.
Cycle tourists are welcome here, and
Mulhouse makes a great star ng point for
exploring the area by bike.

Christmas Time
As in the whole of Alsace, Christmas is a special me in Mulhouse and the
whole region. Enjoy a friendly, magical atmosphere as you enter a world
fragrant with the scent of gingerbread and mulled wine.
With illumina ons which are unique in Alsace, Christmas fabrics, Christmas
markets, music, fairytales, sing-alongs and Advent concerts, Mulhouse is
the ideal place to experience the magic of Christmas! Local skills are put
to good use on this occasion, and an exclusive fabric is created which
can only be seen in Mulhouse, then in the Land of Carols and Tex les the
following year. The Christmas market, the monuments and the streets are
decorated with thousand metres of fabric which is also turned into gi s
to bring back from your trip to Alsace.
Mulhouse is also the capital of the Land of Carols and Tex les, which
has long been historically linked to the tex le industry. In recogni on
of this tradi on, the Tourist Offices in the local area organise a “Fabric
Workshop”, where people can learn about tradi onal techniques and
make a decora ve object out of fabric, as well as “The Tex le Minute”,
an amazing short workshop where you can make a postcard out of cloth.
Alongside these, the Museum of Printed Tex les holds its own Christmas
market and a superb exhibi on each year.

MULHOUSE, IDEAL FOR
BUSINESS TOURISME
The mission of the Tourist Office’s

As specialists in the des na on, the
Conven on Bureau assists event

Conven on
Bureau
promotes
Mulhouse as a Business Tourism

completes the Conven on Bureau’s
range of communica on tools.
Beyond being well-presented, a
website also has to be intui ve and

with the aim of quickly finding the
most appropriate place to host your
event: you can run an advanced
search by size of room sought, type
of venue (excep onal, unusual,
hotels and restaurants...) or type
of event (residen al seminar, gala
