OPEN
YOUR EYES
WIDE!
Vine-lined valleys along a
route which glorifies wine, the
Vosges mountains on one side
and flat farmland on the other,
Alsace has many faces. But it
has one common feature - the
stork, the region’s emblem. It
flies over villages, overlooks
squares and bids you welcome
with its kindly beak. →

You can’t ignore it.
Towards the end of
November, the trees
are already beginning
to glisten. Little log
cabins emerge from
their storage sheds.
Mulled wine and
spiced bread warm the
cockles of our hearts.
Baubles clink together
in the breeze. Little
children are already
dreaming of the rustle
of wrapping paper. In
Alsace, this all lasts for
40 days. We call it the
magic of Christmas
and it’s something
you’ve got to see at
least once during your
lifetime!

Victoria, Silver Ghost, Royale, Dynavia, Pallas, Veyron… If these
names sound familiar, then you’ll be in your element. If not, then a
visit to the Cité de l’Automobile might help you to finally develop a
fascination for the beauty of machinery and become enthusiastic
about the seductive metallic curves. Or perhaps not.

Bikes only
The automotive industry occupies an important position
in Mulhouse! But other means of transport are popular,
too. Visitors will love the 250 km of cycle tracks which
criss-cross the city and surrounding areas.
8
Can you keep a secret?
Mulhouse Zoo’s main
attractions are not
only the baby panthers
which look like soft
toys, the comical
monkeys, the hungry
sea lions or the
hair-styles of the
Poitou donkeys. They
also include
an extensive botanical
collections, which
most visitors don’t
even see...

TIME
MACHINE
Mulhouse is unique in the Alsatian landscape. The
city does not possess all the same elements as the
rest of the region, but boasts unique traits which
forge its character. A character firmly based on
textiles, printing or engineering. A city of manual
workers and industry. But that’s not all.... →

A visit to this museum is a must for tourists. And you

TOUR STARTS HERE!

Mulhouse is certainly not
flashy. And not in the
least bit pretentious. In
fact, it’s almost modest,
beneath its industrial
garb, its working class
make-up and its red
chimney headgear.
But every one of its
wrinkles, every one of its
protruding bones bears
witness to a past which
is firmly rooted in the
present, a rich legacy to
be explored.

Are you a paparazzo from the business world? Have you always
wanted to investigate the whys and wherefores of the things
around you? Now’s your chance! Alsace really is THE PLACE TO
BE if you want to go behind the scenes of different businesses,
asking “how is a car made?”, “how does a large regional newspaper
function?” or “what is the modern textile industry like?” There’s no
shortage of topics!

clock’s ticking... Can’t

between these words?
Well they are all clues

TERROIR
MY BEAUTIFUL
Here’s a little
question for you.
You arrive in a
region where
wine reigns
supreme, the
cheese is legendary and the
recipes are timeless. Where are
you? In Alsace,
of course. What?
You’ve never
heard of Munster
cheese, Riesling
and sauerkraut?
Oh, come on...
And all these
specialities now
revisited by
Michelin-starred
chefs, should do
you good! →

TERROIR, MY BEAUTIFUL TERROIR
Star-spangled chefs
You can eat - that’s just an everyday event. You can eat in the
company of others - that’s a convivial event. You can also savour a
fine meal - that’s a sophisticated event. So visit one of Mulhouse’s
two Michelin-starred restaurants, where you can do all of these and
be transported to seventh heaven. And what’s more, the Il Cortile
restaurant has just been awarded its second star!
1
5
What’s 61 years old,
170 km long, and is
sometimes green,
sometimes red, but
often white? Here’s
another clue: the
locals cultivate their
land like nowhere else.
Need another clue?
Riesling, Muscat, Pinot
Gris, Sylvaner… You’ve
got it! It is indeed the
Alsace Wine Route, a
serpentine route which
snakes its way through
the valleys of Alsace
from north to south (or
vice versa). Make sure
you empty the boot of
your car first...

Fancy a visit to the shops, some retail
therapy or a bit of window-shopping?
Then ready, get set, go for a shopping
spree... in the Rue du Sauvage. Or
maybe elsewhere. Creative talents
are waiting to be discovered in every
corner of Mulhouse. If you want to
become the best shopper in town, it’s
worth exploring a little, isn’t it? →

Resolutely Alsatian
Fed up with off-the-peg
garments, the standardised products of the globalised fashion industry?
Well, there’s nothing quite
like Text-Ill, the huge craft
and fabric market which
takes place annually in the
Mulhouse’s spacious Place
de la Réunion. Every item
of clothing, every accessory on sale there is unique
(or practically unique), and
resolutely Alsatian.

And what about going a little further South? To our
neighbours in Guebwiller for example, where a Romanesque past and a ceramics tradition are paired with
today’s culture of wine production. Still further South
lies the “green lung” of Alsace, the Sundgau, where
visitors can feast on carp and chips! And because this
is where nature reigns supreme, why not swap the car
for a bike to get your legs moving?

motorways are toll-free
in Alsace!

Atlantic-Black Sea along
the Rhin-Rhône Canal,
Eurovélo 15 along the Rhin
and Eurovélo 5 Via Romea

from a Joe Dassin song, show the importance of public

lines and a tram-train route stopping in the region’s 33
towns and villages. All tram stations have automatic ticket
machines which accept cards and coins. You can also buy

OUR LABELS
OUR
LABELS
Mulhouse became the 7th urban destination to receive
the national Famille Plus award in 2013 and is committed
to providing an all-round destination for families. The
approval identifies and describes sites, facilities, activities
and rates suitable for families and children.
You said «vélotouristique» city?
The French Federation of Cycle Tourism approved Mulhouse Alsace as a “bike-friendly town.” The award basically
means that accommodation, restaurants, museums,
tourist sites and bike mechanics do everything they can to
ensure your stay goes without a hitch in accordance with
specifications drawn up by cycle tourism professionals and
the federation.
For example, there’s an automatic pump in the heart of
town, two “bike-friendly town” kiosks providing a repair
kit and cycle paths designed in collaboration with the Ville
d’Art et d’Histoire so you can explore Mulhouse’s heritage.
Approved structures must follow 6 guidelines for
welcoming adults and children :
1. a personal welcome for families
2. entertainment for all ages
3. special rates for young and old
A successful stay with your family
Family holidays are magical moments for parents
and children : it is a time to be together and experience
something special as a family.
4. activities for all ages, together or separately
5. stores and providers nearby
6. professionals with an awareness of children’s needs
Famille Plus is your guarantee of a great family holiday
whether you’re with your kids, grandchildren or friends.
Mulhouse’s approved sites and activities can be
found in the Family guide.

OUR LABELS
A City of Art and History
Mulhouse was recognised as a Ville d’art et
d’histoire, a sign of excellence for exceptional
heritage awarded by the Ministry of Culture
in December 2008. As the only town in Alsace
to receive this recognition, Mulhouse joins the
network of 162 approved French
towns and areas.
Disabled-friendly
tourism
Are you a disabled
visitor wanting to
explore Mulhouse and
its surroundings? Don’t
worry, we do our utmost
to provide you with the
best conditions possible.
Are sites disabled-friendly? We’ll tell you and
we’ll highlight which sites
are Tourisme & Handicap
approved. Are sites
partially accessible? We’ll
tell you what is possible,
what is difficult and what
we wouldn’t recommend
so that you can make an
informed decision and
make the most out
of your holiday.
Tourist Office
Our Tourist Office is
disabled-friendly and
Tourisme & Handicap
approved for the 4 main
impairments to enable you
to meet our team and get
the information and advice
you need. The spacious
centre is now easy to get
around, furniture and facilities are disabled-friendly
(toilets, shop, information
displays, sofas, desks,
iPads to use etc.), our staff
are trained in welcoming
disabled visitors, there’s a
disabled parking space by
the entrance, information
is categorised by theme
and easy to find thanks
to pictograms used
all over France.
We have welcome
document in Braille,
a hearing loop and
documents in large font
especially for you.
Among these the old Town
Hall whose beauty was
praised by Montaigne at
the end of the 16th century
and beautiful mansions
from the 18th century in
the image of the House
Loewenfels. In addition to
these listed buildings, the
city abounds in architectural details that visitors will
spot while walking around,
even on more recent
buildings. The heritage
from the 19th and 20th
centuries is particularly
rich. The new manufacturing district, rows of neat
working-class houses, the
old industrial buildings of
DMC and SACM, the Ring
building, etc.
Mulhouse also boasts
a rich natural heritage,
largely inherited from
the 19th century, like the
Zoological and Botanical
Park, Steinbach Square or
Salvator Park with many
species of trees.
There are several ways to
discover this remarkable
heritage: there are
organised guided tours,
and there are the booklets
about Mulhouse (“Hear
about Mulhouse” and “Tell
me about Mulhouse”)
and educational and fun
activities are organised for
children and young people.
