The monument sign at the front of our main offices of Holy Cross Center
(formerly the residence of the Brothers of the Holy Cross) cites the most
popular element of our mission, “Educating Hearts and Minds since 1947.”
The mission wording, “Educating
Hearts and Minds,” is very catchy and
often repeated by those from all of
our constituencies. We are certainly deserving of the passage of the Marketing (Blessed Fr. Basile) Moreau course!
More meaningful; however, are the answers to the questions that delve into
the specifics as to how, exactly Notre Dame High School is educating the hearts
and minds of its students. Questions like these (as recently formulated by Fr.
Bernard LaFreniere, Br. Joel Giallanza and Br. Donald Blauvelt in their publication of “Holy Cross Education: A Spiritual Legacy”) to Holy Cross educators:
How is Holy Cross education a work of resurrection for me?
In which ways have you witnessed a transformation taking place in students through
your efforts as an educator?
How have I experienced that God is a part of what I do as a Holy Cross educator?
“Thank you
for supporting
Each of our teachers at Notre Dame can answer these questions in their own
way based on their own experiences. There is no doubt in my mind that every
one of our teachers answers affirmatively to all of these questions. When Joe
Namath was asked why he predicted his 1969 New York Jets team was going
to win the Super Bowl as a 16-point underdog versus the mighty Baltimore
Colts, he unhesitatingly acclaimed, “It ain’t bragging if you do it.” Similarly,
when I boast about how great our teachers and staff are at Notre Dame, it
ain’t bragging. The mere fact that we ask these questions of ourselves as Holy
Cross educators makes Notre Dame and our fellow Holy Cross schools special.
Notre Dame
High School
and the Holy
Cross legacy
I reflect in gratitude on the 2013-14 school year for those listed in this report who contributed so much to the success of the year. Our successes and
achievements, large and small, come from every corner of the campus with
the acute awareness by faculty and staff that even the smallest amount of
encouragement can make the world of difference to an individual and unique
student.
of educating
Thank you for supporting Notre Dame High School and the Holy Cross legacy of educating hearts and minds. Every one of our alumni, parents, students
and friends is contributing in some way by enrolling their children, by making
charitable gifts, by offering service and by prayer. Ours is a mission that does
not merely hope for survival, rather; it must continue to thrive and it demands
perpetuation. May God continue to bless the Brothers of the Holy Cross and
Notre Dame High School.
Go Knights!

Coach Jon Sutherland Running Streak
Coach, Jon Sutherland has the longest running streak in the U.S. He has been running
at least one mile every day for the last 45 years which dates back to May 26, 1969. “I’ve
averaged 11.2 per day, 78.2 per week, 4083 miles per year. I have raced 615 times and
won 325 of them. During the streak I’ve had ten broken bones! And kept on running
(two toes, two metatarsals, four ribs, my hip, and a vertebrae). I love to run.”
ND's Head Cross Country and Track Distance
Coach passed his good friend, Marc Covert's consecutive running streak of 45 years and one day.
“Mark Covert, who inspired me to run every day
ran for 45 years and one day. Mark has been incredibly supportive and I cherish our friendship. To get
to Mark’s record I had to run 16,437 days in a row,
at least one mile.”

Advancement Director, Tracey Hughes, was on
hand to receive a $1,500 check from the Wells
Fargo Foundation at the new branch grand opening at Ventura and Hazeltine.
Coach Sutherland continues to run and will keep
his streak as long his body can endure. He has been
an inspiration and great role model for all the students that have gone through his program at ND
and has stated Notre Dame Cross Country being
the greatest joy in his life now. “I miss racing and
training fast but I’m satisfied to be healthy and
run with Puck (my dog). I never thought I’d enjoy
coaching as much as I do”

Girls Tennis
The 2014 Girls Varsity Tennis Team had a fantastic season
finishing second in the Mission League with a record of 6-2.
The Knights had strong wins over Marlborough and Marymount and came within two matches twice of beating Harvard Westlake. In the Mission League Individuals the singles
had a great showing. Lauren Sandifer finished in third place
and freshmen Avery Aude won the tournament. At the end
of November, Avery moved on to the State Regionals.
Girls Varsity Volleyball
The Lady Knights entered into the very tough Mission
League and battled all the way through to a 3rd place
finish; allowing the Knights to qualify for playoffs.
League victories include a 5-game nail biter, comeback
win at Marlborough for their senior night, as well as a
4-game victory over our League rivals Harvard Westlake. We enjoyed another great Dig Pink Event this
year against Marymount and another 5 game match.
We had a tough playoff draw against Mira Costa in
Division 1AA where the Knights just came up short
in a 5 game loss. The Lady Knights look forward to
reloading for the 2015 season.
Boys Cross Country
Notre Dame's 2014 team has been blessed by a large turn
out of new and eager runners. The squad has grown to over
fifty harriers and continues to rise through the Division 4
rankings. The boys team led by Kristian Ruegg, Brennan Lagerstrom (First Team All Mission League), and Enzo Wright
won the Cal Poly Invitational, placed third at the prestigious
Mt. Sac Invitational and qualified for CIF Southern Section
Prelims. They were ranked 11th going into the championship meets. Their future is bright with only one senior in the
top five and freshman Ryan Armstrong scoring consistently.
The boys Running Knights will be even better next year with
all the experience they gained in this campaign.
Girls Varsity Golf CIF Champions
As the 2014 girls’ golf season comes to an end, there is much
to be proud of. The 7 returning players-Seniors Lauren Crittenden, Kathryn Newton, Sammy Winchester, Janet Yeo; Juniors Alyssa Buzzello, Paige Hollingsworth, and Sophomore
Kennedy Menifield welcomed in freshmen Stephanie Ahn
and Bernadine Corpin to the team. Mission League Champions – 12th time in 13 years. Undefeated the last 6 years. Mission League MVP – Janet Yeo ’15; CIF Northern Division
Champions – 3rd time in 4 years. Three girls qualified for
CIF Individual Finals: Janet Yeo, Sammy Winchester, Kathryn Newton.
Girls Cross Country
The Lady Running Knights are very young and good.
Led by Mariah Moro, Elizabeth Coda, and Juliette Fedoroff (All First Team Mission League) they have been
ranked as high as 4th in the CIF Southern Section.
With a 2nd place finish at the Cal Poly Invitational, 4th
at Mt. Sac and 2nd at the Mission League Finals they
qualified for CIF for an unprecedented 9th year in a
row. Of the top seven runners three are freshmen and
when Audrey Ellias (the school record holder at Mt.
Sac) returns from a season ending injury next year the
ladies will be one of the best teams in the State.
Boys Water Polo
The boys water polo team opened up their inaugural season in their new facility with great success.
The Water Polo Knights had several big wins against
highly ranked opponents in other divisons including
Glendale and Flintridge Prep. The Knights clinched a
CIF Division 1 berth after a dominating 17 to 7 win
over Crespi. The success continued into the division
1 playoffs with a 10 to 3 win over Thousand Oaks. A
tough loss to powerhouse Corona Del Mar in the next
round ended the Knights’ CIF run. The boys’ water
polo team finished the year with a 16-12 record.

30 Years of Women
On April 27, alumnae, family and teachers gathered on campus to celebrate the 30th anniversary of women graduat-
ing from Notre Dame High School. The event was held in the Holy Cross Center Courtyard with alumnae from the
classes of 1986-2013. Many alumnae were in attendance as well as a number of former teachers who were instrumental in the early years. The celebration included stpeakers representing the span of the past three decades. Racquel
Roberge-Turner ‘89, Mary Strong ‘91 and Sierra Hauser-Price Elizabeth ‘01 provided insightful descriptions during
their time at ND and Coach Ann McClung was honored for being an inspiration to female students since 1985.
School History
by Barbara Vining
The first day of school in 1983 was different from the
previous 36 first days of school at Notre Dame because on this September day 185 girls showed up, ending the all-boys era at Notre Dame High School.
Social forces had been building since the mid ‘60s to
bring ND to the point of admitting female students.
An economic crisis in the late ‘70s, along with falling
Catholic school enrollment and shrinking rosters of
nuns and brothers prompted many single sex schools to
go coeducational. ND, at one point on a Holy Cross list
for possible closure, entered into talks with the nuns at
Our Lady of Corvallis in Studio City about combining
the two schools but no agreement could be reached.
English teacher Deneen Narwitz Grist ‘86 was a sophomore in the original group of girls. “After a couple of
weeks it was like we were always here,” she says. “We
joined whatever we could. We made our place here as
fast as we could. We felt like we were Knights from the
beginning. ”
forms and the boys didn’t. The girls wore gray or light
blue box-pleated skirts with white Oxford-cloth shirts.
The boys, within the confines of the dress code, wore
whatever they wanted. Everyone was required to wear
leather shoes. No sneakers or athletic shoes were allowed.
Just as the girls were eased into the population at Notre
Dame, girls sports were introduced gradually, starting the
first year with mostly junior varsity teams according to
the '84 Arches. The first year we fielded teams in JV volleyball, softball and basketball and varsity tennis. Girls At the first coed graduation in 1986, Mrs. Grist and the
also ran track and cross country. Varsity teams and soccer, other girls wore light blue caps and gowns while the boys

wore darker blue. And that year also featured dual valedictorians, a boy and a girl.
In 1985, Ann McClung was hired to teach physical education and coach girls athletics. She is now our Dean of
Women and has coached girls golf to 12 Mission League
Championships in the last 13 years and CIF Championships in three of the last four years.

Women), and Sierra Hauser-Price Elizabeth ‘01 take a photo together
Father Bitterman, of the Sulpician community, was
brought down from Saint Francis High School in
Mountain View to oversee the transition. He was principal from 1980 until 1986, working closely with the
newly formed Board of Trustees and parent Joseph Allegretti '56 to ensure a smooth welcome for the girls,
which included extending the gym to add space for
girls athletics and physical education and adding extra
ladies restrooms on campus.
Most eyewitnesses who are still around say there wasn’t
much opposition to the plan although some older
alumni objected to the loss of the all-boys tradition.
“I was all for it,” says Athletic Director Kevin Rooney,
who had been brought down from Saint Francis by Father Bitterman in 1981. “I came from a coed school
and it seemed like the normal thing to me.”
One quirk of the transition was that the girls wore uni-

Principal Stevie Connelly shares words with the alumnae gathered in
celebration of 30 Years of Women at Notre Dame High School
Everyone who was here then agrees that going co-ed was
a logical step for ND. “It made the boys better behaved,”
says Mr. Rooney. “Before, if a girl was on campus, the
boys would be hanging out the windows. I guess they
weren’t serious, but the boys became better behaved.”
In the fall of ‘85, ground was broken for the Allegretti
office and classroom complex in the area between the
Woodman and Riverside buildings (now St. André Besette and Moureau Halls), adding six classrooms, expanded library space, offices and, most importantly, one girls
bathroom. Made possible through the generosity of Mr.
Allegretti, the new building was dedicated in 1987 as part
of the celebration of ND’s 40th anniversary.
Notre Dame is going strong 30 years after the first girls
came. These days we get up to 900 applications for a
freshman class of about 340. Athletic teams for boys and
girls are robust. And in the circle of life department, a
grandson of Mr. Allegretti graduated last year and Mrs.
Grist’s two daughters are students at Notre Dame, set to
graduate in 2016 and 2017.
Karen Ljubetic-Franquiz ‘91, Joe Spelta ‘81, Scott Hamilton, Kate Peeler
‘05 and ND President Brett Lowart share memories during the event
“It was brilliant for Notre Dame to go coed,” says Stevie
Connelly, since 1996 the first female principal at Notre
Dame. “A coed school brings out the best in both boys
and girls.”

We thank our sponsors and those who donated to both the silent
and live auctions and to the President’s Privilege appeal, which this
year benefits various parts of the Light the Way campaign, including
construction of a new fitness center, new gym lobby, seats in the new
baseball stadium and aquatics center. Auction winners won seats to
concerts, luxury Hawaiian and Tahoe getaways, fabulous wines and
many other offerings. A grand prize Luxurious Hawaiian Vacation
raffle topped off the evening.
We also thank our Emcee (Actor and ND parent, David Burke) who
did a masterful job of presenting our auctions both inside and out,
kept the silent auction lively and presided inside for the rest of the
night. Island Inspirations provided the live Hawaiian entertainment.
The ND Auction and Gala is coordinated annually by the Parents Association to raise awareness for the scholarship
fund, which benefits deserving students in need of tuition assistance. Special Events Manager Susan Armendariz and
her committee worked tirelessly to make it an evening to remember. Special thanks also to the following parents who
served in key committee roles: Elaine Quadra, Tony Ward, Ingrid Zelinger, Liliana Sedano, Margaret Warfield, Jaymie
Monroe, Kathy Paul and to the HCMG Mission Committee and the many parents and friends who have contributed
countless volunteer hours; we are very grateful.
