three years running!
A Publication for the Members of Notre Dame FCU
Fall 2015
THANK
YOU
We are honored to be
Michiana’s Favorite Financial Institution
three years running!
A Fresh Perspective
TOM’S CORNER
Dear Fellow Members,
I am happy to report that good things continue to happen with your credit union. Let me share
just two with you here.
Again this year, the South Bend Tribune held their annual Readers’ Choice Service Award survey.
For the third year in a row, Notre Dame FCU was voted Michiana’s Favorite Financial Institution!
In a community dominated by much larger banks and credit unions (our local market share is less
than 10%), this honor is truly phenomenal. Kudos to our great partners, who go the extra mile
every day to improve the lives of our members and their families.
Within the last few months, we initiated a groundbreaking program called Elevate™, designed
to create a turnkey and recurring fundraising engine to the many well-deserving nonprofits,
including religious organizations, nationwide. Already over 20 groups have signed up across the
country and early indications are very positive. To learn how Elevate™ could help your church,
school or non-profit, please go to NDElevate.com.
As always, if you have any questions, suggestions, or comments, please do not hesitate to
contact me at [email protected].
Thomas J. Gryp, President/CEO

Identity Theft
Prevention
THE NEW NORMAL
by: Brian Vitale, Chief Compliance Officer, Notre Dame FCU
In August 2015 the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) confirmed
more than 330,000 U.S. taxpayers’ sensitive personally
identifiable and tax information fell victim to identity thieves.
How could this happen you ask? The IRS provided an online
service called “Get Transcript” allowing anyone with a social
security number and corresponding date of birth to order an
online transcript of their last filed federal tax return. Take a
moment to think about that. What personally identifiable
information is on your tax return? To name a few: your name,
address, social security number, occupation and wages,
salaries, tips, etc. from your W-2. Further, how many of you
have dependents? My wife and I have four daughters, each of
their names and social security numbers are listed on our tax
return. So, of the 330,000 U.S. taxpayers identified by the IRS as
potential victims, are they counting all six members of my family
or only one head of household?
Following the IRS announcement, the online “Get Transcript”
feature on their website was deactivated (www.irs.gov/
Individuals/Get-Transcript).
Not a week goes by we don’t read about the latest breach
impacting millions of Americans. Some of the more infamous
breaches in the past two years include Target, Home Depot,
Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, JP Morgan Chase Bank and the
Office of Personnel Management. Important to note, the IRS was
not breached. The fraudsters utilized the online “Get Transcript”
resource made available by the IRS. Are you one of the 330,000
U.S. taxpayers impacted by this “Get Transcript” scam?
The next appropriate question any reasonable person will
ask: How did the fraudster obtain the personally identifiable
information (name, social security number and date of birth)
needed to take a very important step in stealing an identity? The
short answer: countless ways. Sophisticated social engineering

techniques including phishing emails, vishing (telephone calls)
and surfing your online presence via Facebook and Twitter,
for example, are some of the ways fraudsters obtain your
information. And, don’t forget good old dumpster diving – a
very effective non-technological technique used to obtain your
personally identifiable information.
Do you have an expectation those with whom you do business
have an obligation to protect your sensitive personally identifiable
and transactional information from those intent on stealing your
money and/or identity? Notre Dame FCU agrees with you. We
take seriously our fiduciary responsibility to each and every
member of the credit union. To that end, we continue to evolve
member authentication and validation methods and techniques
to ensure we maintain our commitment as gatekeepers of your
information.
One way we accomplish this is by ensuring we authenticate
every member prior to executing a request. When you call into
our Shamrock Center or into one of our branches, validating your
identity by asking you for your social security number, date of
birth and/or mother’s maiden name is a thing of the past. Many
of our members have experienced increased authentication
measures in-person and over the phone. Rest assured these
increased authentication measures are to ensure your personally
identifiable information and funded accounts remain yours and
not in the hands of a fraudster attempting to impersonate you
and abscond with your money.
Increased member authentication and validation methods and
techniques are the new normal here at Notre Dame FCU.
If you have any questions about Identity Theft Prevention or
general inquiries about social engineering pitfalls, please do not
hesitate to contact me via email at
[email protected] or directly at (574) 400-4971.

Help Notre Dame FCU beat USC Credit Union and
raise $10,000 for the Kelly Cares Foundation. In the
spirit of the Notre Dame vs. USC football game taking
place under the lights on October 17, Notre Dame
FCU’s President and CEO, Tom Gryp, challenged USC
Credit Union’s President and CEO, Gary Perez, to see
which credit union can acquire the most credit card
applications by 11:59 p.m. on October 16.
A Jeweled Shillelagh will not be the victor’s award.
Rather both credit unions have contributed $5,000
towards the prize. The champion will receive the full
$10,000 to donate to the charity of their choice.
Notre Dame FCU’s charity of choice is Kelly Cares
Foundation, established by Brian Kelly, Head Football Coach
of the University of Notre Dame, and his wife Paqui. The foundation supports organizations, initiatives
and programs that closely align with goals and values of the Kelly family in three main pillars: Health, Education, and Community.
HEALTH personal involvement with an emphasis on breast cancer research and prevention
EDUCATION institutional advancement at all levels and capacities
COMMUNITY involvement in selected initiatives and projects.
