Prehistoric Challenge
Welcome to the Prehistoric Challenge! A celebration of
dinosaurs, woolly mammoths and anything prehistoric.
To earn your badge you need to do the following:
Rainbows - pick any 3 activities
Brownies - pick any 4 activities
Guides and over - pick 1 activity from each section
Instructions and templates are at the back of the pack.
Dinosaurs
Write a dinosaur story like Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle’s “The Lost World”, or maybe a poem.
Colour in the dinosaur picture at the back of the pack. We don’t really
know what colour dinosaurs were - so anything goes!
Some dinosaurs ate only meat.
They are called
Carnivores. Some only ate plants. They are called
Herbivores. Why not try some vegetarian food to see
what it would be like to be a herbivore? Or maybe try a
meat dish and then the vegetarian alternative and see if
you can tell the difference (for example, Bolognese).
Dinosaurs come in all shapes and sizes, and although we’ve never seen
one, we think they were probably all colours. Design your own
dinosaur from scratch. What does it eat? Where does is live? Does it
live with others, or would it rather be alone? Give it a name too.
The name Dinosaur means ‘terrible
lizard’ in Greek.
Other Dinosaur
names are also Greek words joined
together, like Triceratops = Three (tri)
Horns (cerato) Face (Ops). Have go of
making up your own name using the
words at the back of the pack. E.g. If
you are small and like running your
name could be: Microdromeus!
Sea Monsters
At the time of the dinosaurs there were prehistoric
creatures in the seas and oceans too. Many of them
look like our whales, sharks and dolphins of today,
although they had a lot more teeth!
Can you work out what these creatures names mean
using the list of Greek words at the end of the pack?

Try making an 0rigami Plesiosaurus. There are loads of instructions
online.
Make an ichthyosaur puppet.
Some people think that there is a plesiosaur in Scotland - it is called
the Loch Ness Monster! Can you write a newspaper article about some
new evidence, or act out a news report with ‘live’
footage, witnesses and maybe the monster!
Try making the cheeky crocodile (instructions at the
end).
Flying Creatures
While T-Rex roamed and Icthyosaur swam,
some animals flew - the pterosaurs.
Have a Pterydactyl costume party. Get
everyone to make costumes out of recycled items and then give prizes
for the best ones.
Can you find all of the words in the
pterosaur wordsearch?
One of the largest ever pterasaurs was
Quetzalcoatlus with a wingspan of 4.5 feet.
Have a go of drawing out a lifesize one!
Make a mobile with lots of different flying
prehistoric creatures.
The Ice Age
The Woolly Mammoth is a very large, very hairy
elephant like creature - adapted to its cold home.
Can you take an animal from today and adapt it to
survive an ice age?
Make a saber-tooth cat mask out of a paper plate.
Play Trunks and Trees (a version of snakes and ladders with a twist!)
Make a Woolly Rhino puppet using a paper bag.
Humans
Humans haven’t been around very long compared
to the dinosaurs.
People that dig up dinosaur bones are called Paleantologists. Have go
at digging up your own dinosaur bones (sticks buried
in soil in a tray?). Use paintbrushes to carefully
uncover the details, you don’t want to damage
them.
When people found dinosaur bones, they weren’t
always laid out neatly. Often the bones had to be
rearranged to make the skeleton. See if you can piece together the
skeleton jigsaw.
Our ancient ancestors achieved amazing things with
no machines to help them, like the pyramids.
Recreate one of these feats by making your own
Stonehenge out of biscuits and melted chocolate or
icing sugar to stick it together!

Cheeky Crocodile
You will need: Green card, white paint, googly eyes.
Fold the card in half lengthways.
Line up the ‘spine’ of the template with the fold of the paper.
Draw around the template and cut the shape out.
Open the card out flat. There are 6 triangular slits along the
crocodile’s back. Fold these back on themselves.
Fold the crocodile back half again.
Add the eyes and a white toothy smile.
