Our employee experience is built on empowering and encouraging individuals to make a positive impact in all facets of their lives: in their work, in their homes, and in their communities. As we ignite the passion of some of the brightest and sharpest minds in the industry, we are proud to focus time, energy and resources on making a positive difference for our communities. The growth of our workplace volunteering program is among the best examples of how CIBC Mellon’s engaged employees come together to give back. We’ve seen our program grow from a small, enthusiastic group to inciting passion amongst the majority of employees across every business unit at our company. Today, we encourage and track employee participation with established corporate goals across all business units — with team rewards for achieving and exceeding participation goals. TOGETHER IN ACTION WORKPLACE VOLUNTEERISM CIBC Mellon is proud to support employees in their pursuits of making a difference with the Together In Action workplace volunteering program. Through this program, employees are encouraged to volunteer in their communities during regular business hours. For each employee who volunteers in one of our workplace events, CIBC Mellon donates $100 to the host charity, plus an additional $100 when employees support a United Way member agency or program. “We believe in doing well by doing right, creating a great environment for employees to thrive, reducing environmental impacts, and making a positive difference in the communities where we work and live. Through our employee-driven corporate social responsibility program, we directly engage CIBC Mellon employees in fostering responsibility throughout our organization and our sphere of influence. ” Stacey Harris, Human Resources Corporate Programs Manager and Vice-chair of CIBC Mellon’s Corporate Social Responsibility Steering Committee EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AT CIBC MELLON 6 // engaging employees in our communities TOGETHER IN ACTION IN ACTION: Employee participation rates 50 2009 150 2010 250 2011 385 351 2012 2013 674 796 2014 2015 These numbers are unique participants; counting individuals volunteering more than one time, the total volunteer count was 1070, across 220 separate events. I volunteer with a group in a neighbourhood where families do not always have the funds readily available to send their children to camp. Support from CIBC Mellon allowed us to subsidize youth registration fees, and purchase equipment necessary for members of our Scout group to enjoy a memorable camping experience. It means a lot to me as an employee that the organization would provide funds to an organization I volunteer my personal time working with throughout the year. ” Frank Bonta, Senior Proposal Writer, Business Development Communications FUNDRAISING At CIBC Mellon, our desire to build support for charity is matched with contagious enthusiasm. From raffles to share-the-wealth draws to casual days, CIBC Mellon employees are passionate and eager supporters of charity. Each month, we highlight a different charity for an engaging campaign of fundraising, events, and fun. Taking to the slopes for Ski for the Duke CIBC Mellon employees will climb mountains (and ski down them!) to create a positive difference. The Ski for the Duke team hurtled down hills at enormous speeds, helping raise much-needed funds to support the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Ontario in engaging at-risk youth (including first nations youth, rural youth and youth in the justice system) in the Duke’s self-directed program of skills development, physical recreation, community service and adventurous journey. EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AT CIBC MELLON 16 // ST R EN GTH I N DI V ER SI TY “It’s through our culture of inclusion — sharing unique perspectives, ideas, experiences and expertise — that we are able to come together to be a leader in asset servicing in Canada. ” Trish Roberts, Relationship Management Account Manager and Chair of the Women’s Initiatives Network EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AT CIBC MELLON 17 // ST RE NGT H I N D I VE RS I T Y Strength in Diversity Our engaged workforce comprises individuals from many walks of life, each with varying interests, experiences, and backgrounds. CIBC Mellon employees are encouraged to bring their whole selves to work, harnessing the energy from diverse perspectives while coming together to create a cohesive workplace tapestry. CIBC Mellon employees are able to connect, share and learn through our Diversity Committee, Women’s Initiatives Network, and Parenting Committee, plus tap into an array of affinity and employee groups from our parent companies CIBC and BNY Mellon, including the CIBC Aboriginal Circle, CIBC Pride Network and BNY Mellon HEART (focused on awareness of the needs of those with disabilities). These groups provide informal advice and help ensure a workplace that provides equity and opportunity to all employees. DIVERSITY We know that building a vibrant culture of inclusion creates a stronger, smarter and more successful company. Proudly Canadian, our employee population is as diverse as our nation, and we’ve worked hard to cultivate a culture that seeks out and welcomes diversity in all its dimensions. Part of creating strong communities includes encouraging our employees to shine in an environment that facilitates networking, inclusion and learning about areas of shared interest. The Diversity Committee unites together a dedicated team of volunteers to organize events and networking opportunities, highlight diversity-related resources and help further strengthen CIBC Mellon as an employer of choice for all career-seekers. In 2015, the group hosted a Diversity Showcase, bringing together more than 300 employees to celebrate difference, share stories, and have fun together. Women’s Initiatives Network Our Women’s Initiatives Network (WIN) provides professional development and mentorship, working to inspire CIBC Mellon’s women to lead. The group celebrates the accomplishments of women through sharing stories at networking events, seminars, and discussion forums. 2015 WIN activities included volunteering, charity networking activities, and fundraisers. Several “coffee and conversation” events centered on a range of topics from leadership to the importance of networking and creating a positive first impression. EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AT CIBC MELLON 18 // ST R EN GTH I N DI V ER SI TY Parenting Committee We recognize that our employees’ identities and obligations extend beyond the office, which includes parenthood. CIBC Mellon’s Parenting Committee strives to further strengthen our family-friendly culture by raising awareness regarding CIBC Mellon’s policies, support and programs for working parents, including back-up childcare, generous maternity/paternity top-ups, and flexible working arrangements. In 2015, CIBC Mellon’s Parenting Committee hosted a number of workshops to address work-life balance strategies and parenting challenges. Acting as a forum for parents, prospective parents, and those interested in parenting matters, the committee offers support and several “how to” workshops and resources to help employees achieve success both at home and at the office. “CIBC Mellon has enabled me to pursue my career aspirations as well as fulfill personal obligations as a mom. Being promoted during my maternity leave was motivational because it meant I didn’t have to choose between advancing in my career or raising a family — I could choose both. I’m thankful to be working within an organization that fosters a supportive environment to pursue both paths. ” EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AT CIBC MELLON Ana Perri, Director, Business Development Communications 19 // A N E NG AG I NG WO RK spaC E An Engaging Workspace Inspired by the sophistication and dynamism of Canada’s metropolitan areas, we take steps to shape our employees spaces to support our vibrant and engaged team. Our offices are situated in the hearts of Canada’s largest and most innovative cities and metropolitan areas catering to, and supporting the lifestyles of our employees. In April 2016, CIBC Mellon opened an exciting new location in Mississauga, Ontario. This modern space features bright workspaces with full-wall windows, collaboration areas, a reflection room, and an outdoor patio area with deck chairs and picnic tables. We’re filling an array of roles to meet the growing needs of our business and our clients. Great workspace and amenities We invest in a great workspace because we care about our employees. From having a laugh or two with colleagues in the arcade room, to enjoying quiet prayer or meditation in our reflection room, to recharging in our employee lounges, there is always a memory to be made at CIBC Mellon. “ CIBC Mellon is large enough that you feel like you’re part of a big company, but small enough to feel like a community. EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AT CIBC MELLON 21 // DAY I N T HE LI FE Day in the Life Featuring: Karen Cheung Senior Financial Reporting Analyst “CIBC Mellon’s support structure has allowed me to expand my capabilities and explore my potential. ” A Day in the Life at CIBC Mellon My Role As a Senior Financial Reporting Analyst my role requires me to assist clients with all reporting aspects of their mutual funds, which includes communicating with a fund’s Portfolio Administrator and Manager to assist them in carrying out their trading decisions for the funds. I do this by compiling a fund’s financial statements and working closely with fund accountants to provide monthly reporting on a fund’s activity. The fund accountants ensure the account information is correct, which helps me instill in clients the confidence that their reports are accurate. I also calculate projections, which are the projected amounts and rates of the funds, and facilitate the processing of a fund’s payments. A Day in My Life My workload varies depending on annual, semi-annual and monthly reporting cycles. We provide monthly reporting for all our clients, so at the beginning of each month I reconcile all data regarding the fund from the previous month, which includes fund accountant information regarding fund distribution as well as information from different departments, match the information to our system’s records and generate a report. The first half of each month is the financial reporting period in which I prep a fund’s information so that my department can manage the volume of reporting needed at month’s end. This day-to-day variety allows me to prioritize projects to complete all my work before reporting deadlines. What I like most about working at CIBC Mellon • I am constantly being given new opportunities to learn and take on new challenges, and have managers that are very supportive of my career aspirations. CIBC Mellon’s support structure has allowed me to expand my capabilities and explore my potential. • The close relationships that I’ve formed with not only members of my team but employees throughout the company — everyone is eager to collaborate. • The resources provided to employees. CIBC Mellon offers tuition assistance and mentoring programs, but I have found that the greatest resource is the willingness of everyone, including upper-level management, to share what they know. Advice to potential applicants I have always wanted to work in the financial industry, and pursued an education that led me to this position. However, after arriving at CIBC Mellon as a Fund Accountant and being exposed to different roles, including my current one, I realized that there are many job opportunities within this field that most applicants are not aware of because they do not expand their search. Gaining a career in this industry and working for a company like CIBC Mellon depends on your ability to strive for excellence and constantly seek out opportunities to improve yourself both professionally and personally. About Karen Title: Senior Financial Reporting Analyst Years at CIBC Mellon: 2 Personal Career Achievement while at CIBC Mellon: CIBC Mellon encourages me to take on more challenges within and outside my role to improve my skills and build my career path. EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AT CIBC MELLON 22 // DAY I N THE L I FE Day in the Life Featuring: Monique Oyetakin Analyst, Client Integrations Solutions “CIBC Mellon gave me all the opportunities I needed to advance both professionally and personally. ” A Day in the Life at CIBC Mellon My Role As an analyst in the Client Integrations Solutions department at CIBC Mellon, I help support clients on Workbench, the powerful online tool our clients use to access reports and other information about their investments. I help clients monitor their accounts, which includes troubleshooting for clients that are having access-related issues, helping clients with their transactions and answering any questions regarding Workbench or other CIBC Mellon platforms. My role in a client-facing position requires I know about the many products CIBC Mellon offers. A Day in My Life I enjoy my job because each day is different, and I’m always learning something new. In a day I assist clients via phone and e-mail as they navigate Workbench and our other information delivery tools. I complete administrative duties, which include testing new user IDs, creating user profiles for new and existing clients, and monitoring client access to CIBC Mellon platforms. I also test trade files for clients in what we call Instruction Upload, which clients use for posting larger volumes of transactions. CIBC Mellon has won a lot of new business recently, so there’s never a dull moment. Most enjoyable experience at CIBC Mellon One of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had at CIBC Mellon was our 2015 Tricycle Grand Prix in support of OneWalk to Conquer Cancer. There was a huge employee response to the event, and it was great to see executives and co-workers having fun racing around on tricycles in support of a worthwhile cause. Three things that surprised me after starting work at CIBC Mellon • Our teams and volunteering opportunities: everyone has a chance to get involved in fundraising efforts and company committees • The company’s strong focus on corporate social responsibility • The incredible opportunities for growth: mentorship, job-shadowing programs as well as tuition assistance for employees Advice to potential applicants I love working at CIBC Mellon and am proud to represent the company at various job fairs. I find myself telling students that in my experience, new opportunities arise where you’re not looking. You may have studied one subject, but you may not end up in that career — you have to keep your eyes open. I started my career in telephone banking, and before moving to CIBC Mellon I didn’t even know what an asset servicing provider was. You never know where you’ll fit in, and you can learn to apply your talents to opportunities you hadn’t considered before.
