Fans of the much-anticipated British drama
film Suffragette will be pleased to hear that
we are showing the BFI compilation Make
More Noise!: Suffragettes In Silent Film on
27 October.
Based on the novel of the same name, John
Crowley’s Brooklyn stars Saoirse Ronan
as young Irish immigrant Eilis Lacey, who
navigates her way through 1950s Brooklyn
and is soon swept off her feet by a new
romance. But when life is disrupted by
her past, she must choose between two
countries.
There’s another great performance from
Maggie Smith as she plays the title role in
The Lady In The Van, the true story of writer
Alan Bennett’s relationship with the woman
who ‘temporarily’ parked her van in his
driveway and then stayed for 15 years.

fantasy adventure Pan, with Levi Miller as
Peter Pan and Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard;
and Bill, the British family comedy from the
team behind the children’s TV series Horrible

This extraordinary retelling of William
Shakespeare’s story of a king driven
to murder and madness preserves the
dark poetry of the Bard’s play, but
presents it with remarkable style and
vision. Macbeth, played by Michael
Fassbender, is a man of war: we see him
at the centre of the carnage in climactic,
eye-popping battle scenes. While in
a strangely calm trance, he meets a
troupe of witches who foretell his future.
Consumed by ambition, he is intrigued
when the prophecy starts to come true.
But it is his wife, Lady Macbeth (Oscar
winner Cotillard), who takes the initiative
and hatches a plot to kill beloved King
Duncan and seize his crown by force.
The cast give superb performances,
delivering dialogue with spellbinding,
understated intensity. Director Kurzel
infuses the 12th century with dread,
paranoia and violence, bringing
Shakespeare’s words chillingly to life.

The inspiringly kick-ass history of Britain’s
early feminist movement is powerfully
recreated in Suffragette, written by Abi
Morgan (Shame) and directed by Sarah
Gavron (Brick Lane). Carey Mulligan stars as
Maud, a young factory worker who discovers
the cause in the early 1900s. Her colleague,
Violet (Anne-Marie Duff), is campaigning
for votes for women, and Maud hesitantly
begins to take an interest, eventually
becoming radicalised by a fierce world of
hunger strikes, guerrilla tactics and brutal
government reprisals. Mulligan is joined by
Meryl Streep as the fearless feminist leader
Emmeline Pankhurst, alongside Romola Garai
as upper-class campaigner Alice, Natalie
Press as Emily Wilding Davison, and Helena
Bonham Carter as a local chemist who uses
her shop as a secret base for meetings.
With its world-class cast and stirring story,
Suffragette is not just entertaining, but
also vibrant with cultural relevance.

With more than six movie versions of J. M.
Barrie’s beloved tale to reference, director
Joe Wright (Pride And Prejudice) manages
to deliver a magnificently inventive take on
the orphan boy who refuses to grow up. With
nary a member of the Darling family in sight,
Wright’s film concentrates on Peter’s origins.
Newcomer Levi Miller plays Pan, who,
believing that he’ll eventually meet his mother
“in this world… or another”, finds himself in a
fantastical land. There he must defend various
outlandish characters from the evil pirate
Blackbeard (Jackman) – and in a mighty twist
on the original, he’s aided by a young James
‘Captain’ Hook (Garrett Hedlund, Inside
Llewyn Davis). Wright’s boldly eclectic cast
includes also Amanda Seyfried, Kathy Burke,
Rooney Mara (as warrior-princess Tiger Lily)
and Cara Delevingne… as a mermaid!
The team behind BBC TV’s Horrible Histories
have concocted an uproarious explanation
for William Shakespeare’s so-called lost
years. According to screenwriters Ben
Willbond and Laurence Rickard, “hopeless
lute player Bill Shakespeare leaves his family
and home to follow his dream… a tale of
murderous kings, spies, lost loves, and a
plot to blow up Queen Elizabeth I.” As in
the popular and ingenious TV series, the six
regular cast members play multiple roles,
with Mathew Baynton as the Bard. Here
they are also joined by Damian Lewis as Sir
Richard Hawkins and Helen McCrory as
Queen Elizabeth. Bill will certainly delight
newcomers and fans of Horrible Histories
alike.

Set in the 1950s, when Irish economic migration was at its height, this good-hearted
adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s bestseller stars Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) as Eilis Lacey, who leaves
rural Wexford for a menial job and a rackety boarding house in the eponymous Brooklyn.
Run by the sharp-tongued Mrs Kehoe (Walters, hilarious), her new digs lead to a mutually
supportive relationship with a local priest (an avuncular Jim Broadbent), chaste church socials,
and eventually a romance with Tony, an Irish-American boy (Emory Cohen). Ultimately Eilis
has to choose between her new love and a beau back home (Gleeson), and between the
life she left in Ireland and the one unfolding in the New World. Nick Hornby’s sensitive but
never syrupy screenplay is perceptively implemented by director John Crowley (Boy A).
Maggie Smith reprises the role she played in Alan Bennett’s hit stage play as the elderly Miss
Shepherd, a lady who occupied a decrepit Bedford van parked in Bennett’s Camden Town
driveway for some 15 years. Having directed the play, Nicholas Hytner (The Crucible, The
Madness Of King George) now helms Bennett’s screen adaptation to delightful, multilayered
effect. Miss Shepherd is no slave to personal hygiene or polite diplomacy. Smith’s wonderful
take on this cantankerous English eccentric is well matched by Alex Jennings, who plays
Bennett as he becomes Miss Shepherd’s somewhat bemused benefactor and astringent
observer. Roger Allam, Frances de la Tour and James Corden (star of Bennett’s The History
Boys) also add considerably to this joyous, socially contemplative comedy drama, but, as
ever, Smith steals the show.
