15 Apr - 26 May 2016 Welcome We start the second quarter of 2016 with some great new films including biographical comedy drama film Florence Foster Jenkins, starring Meryl Streep as the notorious opera singer with the terrible voice and Hugh Grant as her protective husband and manager. Ewan McGregor stars in British spy thriller Our Kind Of Traitor and Helen Mirren gives a powerful performance in the modern wartime political thriller Eye In The Sky, which also stars the late, great Alan Rickman. Plus Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book stars Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba and Bill Murray. Our Discover Cinema strand continues with Chronic, an eerie story of a suspiciously zealous care worker (Tom Roth); King Jack, a coming-of-age film about a young delinquent over one weekend in his run-down small town; and Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger star in the tense and disturbing paranoid thriller Disorder. Our special events include Richard III on 28 April, followed by a post-screening Q&A with Ian McKellen to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, and Airplane, our next Cult Film Club screening. Your ticket to which will entitle you to a free pint of Old Cannon or alternative soft drink. Currently our Screen Arts programme is bigger than ever, and includes Monet To Matisse from the Royal Academy, Shakespeare Live! From The RSC, The Railway Children, Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man, NT Encore: A View From The Bridge and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Mixed Programme. Our resident chef, Canadian Alex Rotherham, has kindly agreed to share some of his amazing recipes with you – see pages 22–23 for his delicious No. 4’s Alpha Omega Salad. And finally, don’t miss the amazing artwork currently on display at the cinema as The Big Screen exhibition continues. Screen-printed posters by 19 local artists – based upon the film that changed their life – are on display, and there are limited editions of these prints available for purchase. Starring: Helen Mirren, Aaron Paul, Alan Rickman. UK 2015. 102 mins. An edge-of-your-seat action thriller loaded with agonising moral dilemmas, Eye In The Sky is a nerve-shredding account of a top-secret operation to capture a group of terrorists in Kenya. Helen Mirren stars as Colonel Katherine Powell, a London-based military intelligence officer making life-or-death decisions. As plans for an imminent terrorist attack emerge, Powell argues that a drone strike may be the only option. But when a little girl is seen wandering into the kill zone, the US-based drone pilot (Paul) is loath to pull the trigger. Shades of dark humour creep in as the decision makers, including politicians and British Lieutenant General Frank Benson (Rickman), debate the best course of action, many trying to avoid culpability by ‘referring it up’. But this costs time and – potentially – lives. This explosive clock-ticker combines action with nuanced characters and up-to-theminute themes. From 15 Apr The Jungle Book (PG) Director: Jon Favreau. Voices: Idris Elba, Christopher Walken, Scarlett Johansson, Ben Kingsley, Bill Murray, Lupita Nyong’o. USA 2016. 106 mins. Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi) is a human boy who’s been raised by wolves. But when the fearsome tiger Shere Khan (Elba) decrees that humans are not welcome in the jungle, Mowgli has to find a new home. Guided by his stern panther mentor Bagheera (Kingsley) and the free-spirited bear Baloo (Murray), Mowgli sets off on a captivating journey of self-discovery. The trio encounter new friends and foes along the way, including the sly snake Kaa (Johansson) and the smooth-talking King Louie (Walken), a giant ape who is desperate to uncover humans’ most powerful secret: fire. Directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man) and boasting a truly all-star voice cast, this new version of Kipling’s timeless stories seamlessly blends live action with eyepoppingly realistic, cutting-edge CGI to create a lush, immersive world. 4 01284 754 477 www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk facebook.com/Abbeygatecinema @Abbeygate_bury 5 Films From 29 Apr From 6 May Demolition (15) Florence Foster Jenkins (PG) Director: Jean-Marc Vallée. Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Naomi Watts. USA 2015. 101 mins. Director: Stephen Frears. Starring: Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant. UK 2016. 110 mins. Although she was a prodigious child pianist, it wasn’t until 1909, at the age of 41, that Florence Foster Jenkins (Streep) could begin to realise her considerable operatic ambitions. A substantial inheritance enabled her to fund her own private recitals, undeterred by her inability to sing in tune or to maintain tempo. By then separated from her husband, she took up with caddish British actor St Clair Bayfield (Grant, giving a career-best performance), who both managed her and indulged her fantasies – even to the point of a huge Carnegie Hall concert in 1944. Hot on the heels of the fictional but similarly themed Marguerite, revered director Stephen Frears (Philomena) and screenwriter Nicholas Martin have fashioned an equally amusing and often poignant biopic of a woman driven by self-deceit whose willing accomplices included her long-suffering accompanist Cosmé McMoon (Simon Helberg), if not Bayfield’s long-suffering wife (Rebecca Ferguson). The peerlessly versatile Jake Gyllenhaal teams up with Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club) to take us on an extraordinary emotional journey. Wall Street banker Mitchell Davis (Gyllenhaal) seems to be living the American Dream, but when his wife is killed in a car crash, he starts to break down – literally. His father-inlaw (Chris Cooper) tells him: “If you want to fix something you have to take everything apart, to figure out what’s important.” Davis takes him at his word, starting with minor acts of creative vandalism and building up to the gleeful destruction of his own home with a bulldozer bought on eBay. Karen Moreno (Watts), the customer-service representative of a hospital vendingmachine company, becomes an unlikely ally as Davis plunges into a series of twists, shifts and powerful surprises. 6 01284 754 477 www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk facebook.com/Abbeygatecinema @Abbeygate_bury 7 Films Coming Soon From 13 May Our Kind Of Traitor (15) Director: Susanna White. Starring: Ewan McGregor, Damian Lewis, Naomie Harris. UK 2016. 108 mins. An unremarkable British couple holidaying in Morocco, Perry and Gail (McGregor and Harris) accidentally befriend Dima (Stellan Skarsgård), a flamboyant Russian businessman. When Dima pressures Perry to deliver explosive information to MI6, the couple are led into a murky world where money laundering and espionage uneasily intersect, propelling them on a journey that involves Paris, the French Alps and unsavoury corners of corporate London – and imperilling their sanity and their lives at almost every turn. Director Susanna White brings an agreeable corkscrewing of tension to an already taut screenplay by Hossein Amini (Drive). Hot on the heels of BBC TV’s The Night Manager, this latest adaptation of a John le Carré bestseller rewards our eager anticipation with brilliant performances, especially from Damian Lewis as an overzealous spymaster. 8 01284 754 477 www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk The Secret Life Of Pets Absolutely Fabulous facebook.com/Abbeygatecinema @Abbeygate_bury 9 Discover Cinema Whether it’s a vintage classic, an art-house gem or a riveting documentary, there will always be something different to discover in our weekly strand. Tue 19 Apr, 20.30 Tue 26 Apr, 20.30 Tue 3 May, 20.30 Tue 10 May, 20.30 Tue 17 May, 20.00 Chronic (15) King Jack (15) The Witch (15) Disorder (15) Victoria (15) Director: Michel Franco. Starring: Tim Roth, Sarah Sutherland, Nailea Norvind. Mexico/ France 2015. 93 mins. Director: Felix Thompson. Starring: Charlie Plummer, Cory Nichols, Christian Madsen. USA 2015. 81 mins. Director: Robert Eggers. Starring: Anya Taylor-Joy, Kate Dickie, Ralph Ineson. USA/Canada 2015. 93 mins. Director: Alice Winocour. Starring: Matthias Schoenaerts, Diane Kruger. France/Belgium 2015. 98 mins. French with English subtitles. Director: Sebastian Schipper. Starring: Laia Costa, Frederick Lau. Germany 2015. 138 mins. English, and German with English subtitles. In this vivid, beautifully shot coming-of-age story, a wayward teenager is forced to look after his young cousin over one hazy weekend. Jack (Plummer) faces all the trials and hardships of a typical teen, but here they are captured with a sharp attention to everyday beauty. Propelled by authentic performances from a young cast, Felix Thompson’s outstandingly assured debut feature is a nostalgic and blissed-out experience. Shunning a world that they consider insufficiently godfearing, William (Ineson), Katherine (Dickie) and their five children decamp to a spartan farmstead in New England in 1630. When their crops fail and their youngest son goes missing whilst in the care of their eldest daughter, the parents’ inconsolable grief soon spawns familial recriminations – which are increasingly fuelled by the suspicion of evil forces lurking in the forest. This impactful film is startling in its avoidance of predictable horror-genre tropes. This stylish thriller stars Matthias Schoenaerts as Vincent, a soldier suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder who takes work as a private security contractor. He is asked to guard a lavish villa as well as Jessie (Kruger), the wife of a wealthy businessman, and their son. Vincent becomes convinced that the pair are the targets for highly dangerous enemies. Astonishing sound design and a cool visual style are deployed to relentlessly build the tension. Director Schipper has pulled off a staggering feat with Victoria, shooting the entire film in one unbroken, exhilarating take. Set in Berlin, it charts the preparation, execution and fallout of a heist. Victoria (Costa), a Spanish girl living in the city, meets local boy Sonne (Lau) at a club. The immediate chemistry between the two leads them into a situation that starts to spiral out of control. A multiple award winner at Berlinale, Victoria is an adrenaline-pumping thriller that pushes the boundaries of cinema. Winner of Best Screenplay at Cannes 2015, Michel Franco’s devastating follow-up to the 2012 hit After Lucia is a character study centring on David (Roth), a home-care nurse who tends to terminally ill and acutely disabled patients in modern LA. Driven by a raw and intelligent performance from Roth, the film is another powerfully emotional work from an important new director. 10 01284 754 477 www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk There is no Discover Cinema on Tue 24 May. His daughter decides to hack into his database and set course for a happier ending by adding six new apostles to the New Testament’s original 12, all with sunnier dispositions. It is the 1930s, and a long and bloody civil war has divided the nation as two powerful families battle for the crown. The end of the war comes suddenly when the reigning King and his heir are killed by the Commander-in-Chief of the York faction, Richard of Gloucester. Richard's elder brother, Edward, takes the throne, establishing a shaky peace over the nation. But Richard, shunning the dreary calm of peacetime, turns his attention to a new, private war within the House of York. Brother to a sickly King and Lord Protector to a vulnerable young heir, he sets in motion a murderous plot to divide his family, eliminate his rivals and usurp the throne. 14 01284 754 477 www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk The classic, laugh-out-loud ‘80s air disaster spoof. Its brand of comedy based on a knowing use of clichés, sight gags and deadpan acting inspired imitations for the next 20 years. Food is hand-crafted daily in our kitchen using high-quality ingredients. This really is quite a healthy salad; the small amount of sugar added by the sweet chilli sauce is easily offset by the cashews, seeds and greens. Healthy can be delicious. Ingredients: Rocket, washed 2 oz Frisée, washed 2 oz Cos, washed 8 oz Red onion 4 oz Red pepper 4 oz Sweet chilli mayo 4 oz Spring onion 1 oz Method For the roasted topping: For the dressing: Cashews 4 oz Sunflower seeds 4 tbsp Pumpkin seeds 1 tbsp Hemp seeds 1 tbsp Sesame seeds 1 tbsp Rapeseed 1 tbsp Extra-virgin rapeseed oil1 tbsp Sea salt to taste Ground black pepper to taste Fresh garlic cloves 2 Cornichons2–3 Egg yolk 1 large Cayenne pepper pinch Chilli flakes pinch Sweet chilli sauce 1 fl. oz Red wine vinegar 1 tbsp Rapeseed salad oil 3 fl. oz Assembly: Chop lettuce into bite-sized pieces and place in a large mixing bowl. Dice red onions and red peppers and add as well. Add sweet chilli dressing and toss thoroughly. Distribute coated leaves evenly amongst four bowls. Cut spring onions at an angle and sprinkle over salads. Sprinkle roasted seeds and nuts over salads. For the toasted topping: Combine all the seeds and nuts and season to taste with salt, pepper and extra-virgin rapeseed oil. Roast in a pre-heated oven at 170°C for five minutes. Allow to cool. For the dressing: Combine the egg yolks, cayenne pepper and chilli flakes in a mixing bowl, and whisk thoroughly. Slowly add red wine vinegar and rapeseed oil, while continuing to whisk. Finely mince garlic and cornichons. Add garlic, cornichons and sweet chilli sauce to the mixture and whisk in. Notes from chef: You can take this salad a step further and make your own sweet chilli sauce for it. But I find that for all the extra work it takes, a good-quality store-bought one will do just as well! If you have difficulty getting - or simply do not like - any one or more of the seeds, feel free to substitute as you like. 22 01284 754 477 www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk We cater for children with smaller portions of the choices from our main menu.
