The fight comes as concerns linger over the future CPS Advanced Arts Program at Gallery 37, a widely celebrated magnet arts program that could close by the end of the semester, de- spite assurances from school officials it would not. BZLCS’s future is now in the hands of the Illinois Board of Education, which must also decide the fate of three other schools that were all recommended for closure just two weeks after they were placed on the CPS’ newly created academic warning list. The controversial decision last November was met with heavy criticism from parents who said CPS gave only 10 days for educators to turnaround Betty Shabazz-Barbara A. Sizemore Academy, Larry Hawkins High School, Amandla Charter High School and BZLCS. Appeals to keep open Betty Shabazz and Amandla Charter Schools have been filed, but no hearing has been set. For BZLCS, The Illinois State Charter School Commission will hold a public hearing at the school at 6 p.m. on February 16. FIGHTING FIGHTINGTO KEEP HIS JOB JOB The school is located at 8 W. Root St. At the hearing, the commission will gather information from the community that will help them to decide whether to grant the school’s appeal to renew its charter. Parents, students, alumni, and community partners are invited to speak on behalf of the school and to share their personal stories about why BZLCS is a valuable educational option worth saving. “This hearing will have a powerful impact on the State Charter School Commission’s decision because they really want to know what the parents in this community want. There will be official commissioners coming to listen to the community. These are the actual decision makers so this is a really important opportunity for our parents,” said Phyllis Goodson, Lighthouse Academies Regional Vice President for Illinois. Now, once again, State Rep. Ken Dunkin (5th) needs voters to help him keep his job. His opponent was once a little-known candidate hoping to take down a goliath in the Black community. Suddenly, Juliana Strat- ton is a big contender in a political race that’s now among the hottest this election season. At first, Stratton was perhaps the cupcake candidate in her bid to unseat Dunkin, a political heavyweight who has served for 13 years. With growing opposition and a fast- approaching March 15 election, this race may be a difficult one for Dunkin to win and a surprising one for a political newcomer. When Stratton entered the race last year, her chances of beating the veteran were (Continued on page 19) On the ninth day of Black History Month and on “National Pizza Day,” Reggio’s Pizza president/CEO John Clark Tuesday said he is disappointed that Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. has discontinued his product from their stores, ending a 23-year business relationship. “Reggio’s Pizza is a 44-year-old African American family business enterprise. Reggio’s happens to be the only African American frozen pizza manufacturer in the United States. “The company is located in the West Chatham community of Chicago where it employs a diverse workforce from the community of African American and Hispanics and where unemployment is extremely high, nearly 40 percent,” he said. A strong supporter of Reggio’s Pizza, Saint Sabina’s Father Michael L. Pfleger said, “As we celebrate Black History Month, it is important that we not only celebrate the great accomplishments of the past but support the African American accomplishments of the present. John Clark, owner of Reggio’s Pizza, is one of these.” (Continued on page 2) INSIDE THIS ISSUE CSU students and faculty step up demands for funding (See story on page 2) Solar light makes futures bright for students (See story on page 10) CHICAGO CRUSADER 02-13-2016.qxp_Sheriff 9/8/07 2007 2/11/16 1:25 AM Page 2 NEWS CSU students and faculty step up demands for funding By J. Coyden Palmer Chicago State students and faculty took their demands for a state budget to be passed downtown to the Thompson Center Feb. 9 after the school last week declared a financial state of emergency. The 4,800 commuter university on the city’s South Side has been plagued by financial mismanagement, decades of underfunding from the state and alumni who do not give back, which has led to the current financial state of affairs. But if the school does not get money within the next three weeks, the university will be unable to meet its payroll and it will cause major operational disruptions. “Chicago State is my life. My mother works at Chicago State and so she has to walk in every day not knowing if she will have a job or not,” said CSU student Charles Preston. He was one of dozens of students who marched around the Thompson building and the surrounding streets. The students and faculty at the rally said everyone is on edge at the school. They say it is unfair to the students who are having a hard time concentrating on their studies because of all the uncertainty surrounding the school’s future. “We want our voices to be heard and let the world know we are here and we count,” said student Daniel Jones. On January 29, several CSU students were given citations after two dozen walked onto the Dan Ryan Expressway during the morning rush hour and shut down traffic. The protests have been growing louder and more visible as CSU students say they are the forgotten university in town. “We put out more African American college graduates in a year than just about all of the other schools combined. For the lawmakers to put this school in this predicament is an attack on the Black community at large,” Jones said. Critics of CSU, which include many of its own alumni, claim the school is a big part of the blame. They say CSU students often miss out on a true college experience and do not connect with the school in an emotional way. “I think most CSU students see the school as a place to get their education and be done. There is no sense of community and there are not activities at the school that bind the students there together,” said alum Ronald Johnson. “Plain and simple with the amount of degrees people have earned from there, money should be the least of their worries if each of us gave a hundred dollars a wouldn’t have to beg so much. My friends who attended HBCU’s would die for their schools and when they come across fellow alum they greet each other with love because of a shared experience. That’s not the case with CSU. It’s like ‘oh you went there? So did I,’ and that’s it.” Illinois has now gone eight months without a budget, the longest in the state’s history. The stalemate is causing problems in day care, healthcare, correctional institutions, and business, in addition to the state universities. Officials at Chicago State along with Governors State in University Park and Eastern Illinois in downstate Charleston, have expressed serious concerns about the future of their operations. “Illinois needs a budget to fund higher education,” said Paris Griffin, CSU student government president. “Without the state budget being passed, higher education in the state of Illinois is in danger.” So far Illinois lawmakers have made several proposals to address the problem at Chicago State but they have yet to take a vote on anything. In the meantime, the students say they will continue their protests and keep the issue in the media. “If we don’t keep this problem at the front of the public’s conscious we’re just as good as gone,” Griffin said. When contacted, Jim Cohn, a spokesperson for Walgreens, said, “We have reached out to folks at Reggio’s to conduct an additional 60-day test” but have not yet heard from them. Asked about this test Walgreens conducted on Reggio’s Pizza, Cohn said, “We continually review every product category as far as their performance and demand. It is essential for every supplier we do business with. The test we conducted resulted in a not strong demand.” Cohn said the test was done over a 90-day period in 30 stores; however, he did not know if those stores were on the South or West Sides of Chicago. “Everything is evaluated for performance,” Cohn said. “The test period conducted reflected a not strong consumer demand.” In reaction to Walgreens’ response, Mr. Clark said, “Reggio’s showing during the 90-day test Walgreens made a net profit of nearly $100,000. That was a strong showing of customer demand. “We are just hearing today about doing another 60-day test. NAACP Chicago South Side Chapter President Attorney Rose Joshua said, “Underperformance and the questionable test of consumer demand is Walgreens’ rhetoric utilized to undermine African American businesses especially Reggio’s Pizza.” Peter Kennedy, Food Spoke Committee co-chairperson for the Rainbow PUSH Coalition International Trade Bureau, wasn’t pleased at all with Cohn’s rationale for shutting out Reggio’s Pizza after 23-years. “This statement appears to be a standard stick put off.” “I completely agree with Mr. Clark that doing another “test” after passing the “30” thirty store citywide test is an unfair burden,” said Kennedy. “Walgreen’s needs to use a level playing field where all vendors are treated the same. What other vendors are required after 23 years to ‘reprove’ their product’s value to be in Walgreens stores? “Reggio’s is not a start-up business and Walgreens is treating them as if they do not have a positive track record and we doubt this is done to other companies with the years of service in Walgreens like Reggio’s,” stated Kennedy. “We at the RPC Trade Bureau are very, very concerned about this grave decision that Walgreens has made. We do not agree with this treatment of Reggio’s Pizza at all. And we want Blacks Must control their own coMMunity to meet with the CEO of Walgreens about this to determine how our community will treat Walgreens because of this mistreatment of one of our valuable job creating community members,” stated Kennedy. “This decision must be reversed immediately.” “It is sad that an institution such as Reggio’s Pizza will be discontinued at Walgreens because it does not seem fit to honor diversity in manufacturing,” Kennedy stated. “It is sad that we have to fight so hard to get Walgreens to recognize that Reggio’s Pizza is well liked and respected. We will not sit by idly and let Walgreens believe that there will not be a response to this outrage.” Kennedy said he is reaching out to Senator Durbin and wants Walgreens Boots Alliance to meet with PUSH officials and explain why this “Switzerland-based company came into the Black community and made such a call as this.” Walgreens is no stranger to public outrage for in August 2014, Walgreens was threatening to move its corporate office to Europe to reduce its tax bill a process called tax inversion that back then President Barack Obama called “unpatriotic” and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) then threatened a boycott if Walgreens moved. Reportedly, the store stayed only because they felt the U.S. IRS would never approve of the inversion plan. www.chicagocrusader.com CHICAGO CRUSADER 02-13-2016.qxp_Sheriff 9/8/07 2007 2/11/16 1:25 AM Page 3 NEWS Leaders dash to sign up voters before deadline Voter registration drive to honor Harold Washington The Mayor Harold Washington Legacy Committee along with the 51st Street Business Association Tuesday announced a voter registration drive which they hope will add thousands to the voter rolls by the February 16th registration deadline for the March 15th primary. “In the spirit of Mayor Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King. Maes, from Battalion Chief Operations Relief, to Deputy District Chief Operations Relief; and Mark bers of the AAFFPL. “It is a step forward. But, as far as the League goes, we still want the U.S. Justice Department to come in and look at the hiring practices since 2006. We are still saying that Commissioner Jose Santiago has to go for the mismanagement of the fire department. We want a moratorium on the hiring until the U.S. Justice Department can take a look at the way hiring has been done.” Boggs said members do not believe the new promotions can reform the department and make things whole. The AAFFPL’s demands, he said, have not shifted since the January 7 press conference outside the Chicago Public Safety Building. At that press event, firefighters called for Santiago’s ouster, saying he has failed to enforce the court consent decree ordering the hiring and promotions of Black firefighters, and he had allowed racism and favoritism to continue to run rampant in the department. Under the consent decree from the AAFFPL’s successful lawsuit in 2011 (Lewis versus the City of Chicago), the city was ordered to hire 111 Black firefighters and pay $30 million to about 6,000 applicants. Many young scholars have been able to get into highly competitive selective enrollment academic centers and high schools after their preparation at BZLCS. Jabari Brooks, a founding student who entered BZLCS in the 38th percentile as a third grader and left in the 99th percentile. He is now a senior at Chicago’s prominent Whitney Young High School. “Closing this school will destroy a pivotal stepping stone for young African Americans like myself to ascend to new heights,” Jabari said. “The generation of teachers at BZLCS has raised a new one that will not complacently sit by while the select few wreak havoc on the many.” BZLCS was well into their renewal process when they were abruptly notified less than 24 hours before their scheduled renewal site visit that Blacks Must control their own coMMunity Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool would be recommending the school for nonrenewal and that their site visit was canceled. 14 days later, the Chicago Public Schools Board of Education voted to not renew their charter. BZLCS is the first charter school in the history of CPS that has been denied the due process of a full renewal process detailed in the charter agreement with CPS. CPS attorneys said it was because they did not have the money. Now, the educational options of the 450 students currently enrolled at BZLCS are at risk of disruption and the community will face yet another setback following the closure of 50 CPS schools in 2013. The school has received multiple grants this year to fund an edible garden and to install a bee hive as well as to conduct additional professional development for teachers. Parents say these plans and opportunities will be lost if the school closes. At Gallery 37, concerns about the school’s future have been ongoing since January 22, when 227 employees were laid off. CPS officials said the layoffs were a cost cutting measure, but the move fueled worries that the move was the beginning of the end for program. Some 150 gifted students-many of them Black- are enrolled in the AAP at Gallery 37. They take honors and Advanced Placement classes ranging from drawing and painting to video production to culinary arts to jazz performance. Enrollment is capped at 250; currently, about 150 students are enrolled. The courses make up an after-school program but separate from After School Matters, the popular program founded by Maggie Daley, the late wife of former Mayor Richard M. Daley. CPS officials say they are looking into “potential modifications” to the Advanced Arts program that would allow a larger number of students to benefit from this unique program. So far, no decisions have been made to modify the program. This is because an African American is president of the United States! President Barack Obama’s great achievement can send a very important message to the Black community if it can be correctly deciphered. There is a familiar saying in popular contemporary culture – “What you see is what you get.” Though some people easily identify with the truth of this assertion, the more esoteric aspects of it escapes most. If that were not the case, Black people wouldn’t continue to focus on weaknesses in the community and in themselves. President Barack Obama, however, is someone who focused on achievement rather than victimhood. When we look at the history of Black people in America and around the world, it becomes painfully obvious that bigotry is alive and well. It is also understood that there are those who deliberately do things to thwart the efforts of Black people when it comes to social and economic parity. Because of this, it is understandable that Blacks would develop a victimhood worldview. But what has this gotten the community? If we as a people are helpless in the face of misfortune and oppression, then we might as well get angry with Nature, because Black people are not only victims of others outside of the community, but also victims of Black on Black angst, as well as being disproportionately victimized by biological maladies. It seems as though every time a new disease is discovered, the Black community suffers more from it than others. And why is this so? The answer most likely lies in a total embracement of a philosophy of victimhood, a MINDSET! What you see is what you get! The Law of Attraction ensures that people who view the world from a position of inevitable defeat will manifest that condition. It is time that we adopt a new paradigm; that we begin to understand the world in a different way. To continue to ignore the fact that we CAN impact our destiny in spite of mega-oppressive forces is something that we need to consider. The world is in the dark ages when it comes to dealing with new realities like the incredible power of intention-based thought. At one time people were convinced that the world was flat. Actually, today there are still people who stubbornly hold onto that viewpoint, but most of us know that the world is not flat. Also, recent discoveries in the world of science are pointing to new dimensions regarding so-called “reality.” The Heisenberg Principle, for one, has shown that the observer actually alters and influences what is observed, yet we still hold onto the old mechanical model of reality as described by Sir Isaac Newton several centuries ago. The actual fact is that we have not yet cracked the code of the human mind. Like the flat-earthers that live among us today, we have refused to advance in an understanding of consciousness and the power of thought. People have not included consciousness in life’s equations to a satisfactory degree, EXCEPT those who know that we can create our world based on what we anticipate and on where we focus our attention. When looked at in this light, it is the height of folly for Black people to continue to focus on victimization because it has just resulted in more victimization; we have enthusiastically forged a rut that is getting deeper and deeper entrapping us to such an extent that it will be difficult to escape. We must never forget that we can create our own destiny because we have the power of MIND. Mind, linked with LOVE and UNITY, are the powerful weapons that we have that can combat a victimhood consciousness. President Obama has faced many, many obstacles, but he has prevailed, and he is an excellent role model in this regard. We must take that example to change the focus from victimhood to Black familyhood. The unity of collective Black WILL (power) can change our condition for the better. The time is now! A luta continua. I know that sometimes you allow readers to write letters about the same topic, and I hope this is one of those times. I have seen on this page suggestions and ideas for getting rid of Mayor Rahm Emanuel. I also am familiar with the recent push to get him to resign now. That seems to have lost its thunder. It is pretty clear that the mayor is not going to leave before his time is up. If that is an accurate guess, then I think every Black person in Chicago who is old enough to vote should begin contributing to what I call the Rahm Retirement Fund. No money would go to him but it would go to a candidate, or even two candidates Black folks feel can defeat Rahm in the 2019 election. Whoever sets out to run against him will need a very sizeable war chest. Instead of waiting until the candidates announce, those of us with no interest in seeking public office can contribute maybe $1 or $2 per week until the campaign season starts. By that time an organization, and rules to dispense the dollars can be established. This kind of process could easily mean millions of dollars to one or two candidates. They don’t necessarily have to raise more money than Emanuel but they do need 4 Blacks Must control their own coMMunity SATURDAY, February 13, 2016 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Time to plan Rahm’s exit Dear Editor: enough to make sure they can have a capable staff, do all of the research and communications necessary, as well as market and advertise their campaign. One of the daily newspapers took a poll that showed Emanuel had a very low approval rating in the Black community, and the city in general. We really need to capitalize on that sentiment and put everything necessary in place now to get him out of office in the next election. I am not advocating for the best Black candidate, but the best candidate period. We have to get mature about politics in this city and learn how to do some horse-trading with other communities and other interests to help the West Side and the South Side advance. Politics, especially effective politics is about give and take. We will need a variety of voters to accomplish the goal of getting Emanuel out of office. That should be the focus-our common goal, not our differences. Hopefully there will be more about this idea in the very near future. Willie Mae Ernest Black Chicago needs to come together for CSU Dear Editor: If ever there was a time for Black Chicagoans to come together for a cause, that time is now. The cause we need to unite for is preserving Chicago State University. The very real possibility that people who have put four, five or six years into their studies may not graduate should be alarming to everyone. The governor’s refusal to allocate dollars to keep the school open past next month smacks of the Jim Crow South when it was super difficult for Black people to get an education. Alford On February 3 my oldest daughter sent me a text saying: “Daddy, Maurice White died this morning.” I conveyed the sad news to my wife and realized that Maurice was like family to most of us. His songs and live performances brought joy to our nation and even the world. There is just no big band act that could perform and be appreciated by all races like “Earth, Wind and Fire.” That was his baby. He was born in Memphis and started loving music by the time he was walking. He would soon work professionally under Stax Records. After visiting his mother in Chicago a few times he decided to move to the Windy City. He joined up with the historical Chess Records. There he became friends and eventually a business partner with the famous pianist Ramsey Lewis. The first time I saw Maurice he was playing with the Ramsey Lewis Trio. They did a show at the University of Wisconsin, 1968. He was beating the drums. Also, there was another instrument he entertained us with. It was a Kalimba, which is an African hand instrument that Harry C. C. Alford Alford Harry sounds like a flute. No other musician can work that instrument like Maurice. The entire hall enjoyed his solos. In 1969, he decided to become entrepreneurial with his talent. Maurice joined with his two brothers, Verdine and Fred and a host of familiar musicians that he met along the way. Thus, the genesis of Earth, Wind and Fire began. I was working for Procter and Gamble in 1970, dri- ving the company car on a rural route of my territory – pushing soap at every grocery store along the way. What saved me from boredom while driving in this farm country was my car’s AM radio. I picked up this soul station sponsored by Michigan State University. The DJ gave notice that he had discovered this great new group. “Their name is Earth, Wind and Fire. How creative naming themselves after the elements. If you like this group let us know I want to bring them on campus.” I was impressed. However, I did not hear any of their sounds again until 1973. I was now a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army traveling to Rock Island, Illinois to participate in a race relations conference. Racial tensions were heating up in the military due to the Draft. Blacks were disproportionately being drafted into the Army. 30 percent of us were going off to Vietnam and even a higher percentage were being killed or wounded. Every military base soon had a Race Relations Officer to detect bias and settle disputes. I represented Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah. There were about 60 of us at this session. As always any group of Black officers in uniform would work small town sisters into a frenzy. One evening we decided to paint the town and ended up in a predominantly Black nightclub. As we sat at tables drinking the women would walk over and start hitting on us. One very shapely lady came to me and stated: “It is too busy in here. Let’s go to my apartment and listen to music. That’s all!” She showed me a brand new album and started playing it on her LP record player. I looked at the album jacket and stated: Earth, Wind and Fire I know about them. It was a white cover, band members where dressed in white. One lady was in the group – Jessica Cleaves formerly with the Friends of Distinction (Going in Circles). I fell in love with this album and played “Head to the Sky” about six straight times. I became a fan of EWF for the rest of my life. After the Army, the company sent me to Detroit. EWF was the top talent loved by all. They would come to Pine Knob outdoor theater once or twice a year. Every song Maurice would write became a number one hit on all Black radio stations and many white stations. Maurice became a master of melodic soul. We would go to house parties and sev- enty percent of the music played would be EWF. He was a great discoverer of new talent. Besides Jessica Cleaves he brought Deniece Williams and the Emotions into prominence and success. He would study a singer’s voice and write songs that were custom made to that style. The hits would keep rolling. Then life has many curves and Maurice got hit with a Biggy. He became plagued with progressive Parkinson’s disease. By 1992, he could no longer work a stage. I last saw him slowly walking through DC’s Reagan Airport about ten years ago. Last week he died in his sleep. He has left us physically but his music will last forever. His name will remain in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. His 20 Grammy nominations and 7 Grammies is a testament to his work and contribution to our culture. Rest in Peace our Brother. Even so, he had a stellar season by all accounts: throwing for 3,837 yards, including a league-high of 35 touchdowns, and running 636 yards, accounting for 10 more TDs. He was selected as a first-team All-Pro and received 48 of the 50 votes cast for league MVP. The undisputed leader of his team was clearly having fun on the field all year — at least until Sunday — and wasn’t shy about showing it. And that’s a breath of fresh air in the NFL - which some say stands for No Fun League. Not only does Newton have at least five different dances, he races to end zone stands after scoring and flips the ball to a smiling, grateful kid. Similar criticism is never leveled at quarterback Aaron Rodgers who performs the Lambeau Leap in the George E. Curry end zone stands after scoring a touchdown. While other teams are penalized for excessive celebrating, the NFL exempts Green Bay players from being disciplined for jumping in the stands after scoring. But officials are quick to penalize Black players. Although African Americans comprise 65 percent of the NFL, they receive 91 percent of the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties assessed after touchdowns, according to a 2012 study titled, “The Hubris Penalty: Biased Responses to ‘Celebration’ Dis- www.chicagocrusader.coM plays of Black Football Players.” The authors, Robert Livingston and Erika V. Hall, noted of the celebrations, “This challenges whites’ perceptions that they are and should be in charge. These perceptions and feelings often operate at an implicit or subconscious level. However, it is the Black player who ends up getting blamed, rather than whites’ implicit bias. “What is clear, however, both in our data and in many real-world scenarios, is that it’s perfectly fine for white males to show a lack of humility. People not only tolerate it, they often celebrate it.” Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a case in point. Rodger’s patented post-touchdown championship belt celebration is not only tolerated, it has allowed him to laugh all the way to the bank when he films commercials for State Farm Insurance featuring the Discount Double Check. Whites’ implicit bias may also account for Black quarterbacks being roughly twice as likely as White QBs to be benched, according to a study by Brian Volz, an economist at Assumption College. The abstract of the study provides this summary: “This study examines data from the 2001 to 2009 National Football League (NFL) seasons to determine whether Black quarterbacks face discrimination. When controlling for injury, age, experience, performance, team investment, backup quality, Blacks Must control their owcoMMunity and bye weeks, Black quarterbacks are found to be 1.98-2.46 times more likely to be benched... When White quarterbacks are benched, the team improves by more than when Black quarterbacks are benched.” Because the effervescent Newton seems to be having so much fun on the field, many underestimate how hard he has worked to reach the top of his profession. “Cam Newton didn’t just stumble into becoming the NFL’s best player,” Associated Press sports writer Steve Reed observed. “Sure, he has all the physical attributes any quarterback could ask for - he’s 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds of muscle with a strong arm and wide receiver speed. He even has a million-dollar smile and the confidence of a player who has always been a winner. “ But those in the Panthers organization say what people don’t see is what Newton has done behind the scenes to improve as a pro quarterback. “‘People see him smiling, giving footballs away and dancing, but what they don’t see is that throughout the workweek the guy is just a machine,’ center Ryan Kalil said. “‘He’s incredible with the time he puts in.’” The off-field behavior of Newton and other Black quarterbacks is, like so many other things, viewed through different lenses. According to a story on ESPN.com, “On Dec. 30, Cam announced the birth of his first child, the boy he named Chosen. The mother, Kia Proctor, was described by Newton as his ‘longtime girlfriend.’ The announcement, made six days after the boy was born, hit the front page of the local papers (of course) and occasioned another finger-wagging letter to The Charlotte Observer (of course.) Patricia Broderick of Mooresville expressed her disappointment in Newton and suggested he marry the mother of his child. ‘Congratulations would be in order,’ she wrote, ‘if he had been man enough to marry the mother of his child and make a home.’ “Well, of course she said that. Tom Brady can have a child out of wedlock - and leave the actress/mother for a supermodel before the baby was born - and not be blamed for the systemic deterioration of the American family and the scourge of fatherless households. For Newton, it was yet another lens through which to view him, as if maturity, greed and race weren’t enough.” George E. Curry is President and CEO of George Curry Media, LLC. E-mail: [email protected], Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago. Dr. Conrad Worrill Until recently, there had been a scholarly debate among European intellectuals, as well as some Blacks, on what they referred to as the peopling of ancient Egypt. What this question really posed was, “Who were the ancient Egyptians?” Were they Black, white, mulatto, etc.? This issue has been at the core of European history, or better yet, European historiography (the science of how history is written) for more than two hundred years. This framework of European hegemony over the history of the world has had a devastating impact on African people and the African mind. It is in this context that we understand the intellectual devastation of the European conceptualization of the world order. We should understand this in relation to our movement for an African centered education aimed at helping our people come out from beneath this European intellectual assault. Let me use renowned African deep thinker, scholar, and ancestor, Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers’ paper he wrote entitled, “Race of Ancient Egyptians” in helping clarify this subject. This paper gives us the insights we need to understand in this regard Dr. Carruthers observes, “The doctrine of white supremacy was launched by philosophers like David Hume who asserted in 1749 ‘I am apt to suspect the Negroes to be naturally inferior to the whites.’ This position was expressed in a different context by Montesquieu about the same time.” We are guided by Dr. Carruthers when he explains, “In the Spirit of the Laws, Montesquieu asserted, ‘it is impossible for us to suppose these creatures to be men, because allowing them to be men, a suspicion would follow that we ourselves are not Christians.’ Montesquieu was justifying the enslavement of Africans that was one of the major reasons for inventing the doctrine of white supremacy.” Upon further examination, Dr. Carruthers reveals “Obviously the emerging doctrine could not gain credibility among those who were familiar with the traditional wisdom among Europeans that the ancient Africans of Egypt had achieved a very high level of civilization and had transmitted to the ancient Greeks many of the major ideas considered a part of Greek civilization.” Dr. Carruthers explains, “Several decades after the founding of the concept of white supremacy Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel supplied the solution of this latter difficulty when at the beginning of the 19th century, he asserted that Africa was ‘not a historical part of the world.’” Finally, Dr. Carruthers quotes Hegel to demonstrate the ultimate in European intellectual arrogance, Hegel states, “Historical movement in it that is its northern part belongs to the Asiatic or European world… Egypt will be considered in reference to its western phase, but it does not belong to the African spirit.” Through this conceptualization Dr. Carruthers reveals, “Thus Hegel took Egypt out of Africa and Africans out of Egypt. He also removed Africans from history.” As an outgrowth of this kind of thinking by European scholars, the field of Egyptology began to emerge. Egyptology as a field of study is the creation of the European mentality that seeks to gather evidence (artifacts and antiquities) that supports the idea of the European origin of civilization. Egyptologists have literally attempted to remove Egypt from the geographical confines of Africa and reposited it within the geographical domain of Asia. The removal of Egypt from Africa serves a twofold purpose. First, it leads to the obvious idea that Egypt is not a part of Africa; therefore, its population could not have been Black. Secondly, it serves the purpose of implying that civilization did not begin with the Black race. Fortunately, we have always had Black scholars among us, who did not get trapped in the European conception of the world. It started with men like Hosea Easton, Henry Highland Garnett, and Martin R. Delany who “took the biblical myth of Ham and used it to estab- lish Blacks as the authors of the great Nile Valley civilizations.” Also, “They… used ancient European works such as Herodotus, Diodorus and whatever modern works they could find. This tradition has been an honorable endeavor and has taught us much.” The old scrappers, according to Dr. Carruthers, “are still among us slugging it out as per our beloved Professor John G. Jackson.” Through the work of Senegalese scholar Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop, Dr. Théophile Obenga, Dr. Yosef ben Jochannan, and Chancellor Williams the origin of the ancient Egyptians should never ever be a question for African people. This question has been resolved. We should be clear that the ancient Egyptians (or more properly called, Kemetic people) were Black. Diop points out that Herodotus “after relating his eyewitness account informing us that the Egyptians were Black, demonstrated, with rare honesty (for a Greek), that Greece borrowed from Egypt all elements of her civilization even the cult of gods, and that Egypt was the cradle of civilization.” Our scholars, thinkers, and researchers should never again raise the questions of who the Egyptians were. Clearly, they were Black people. This question has been resolved! IN IT TO WIN IT – HEAD HILLARY, HEART BERNIE By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist I am looking forward to November 8, 2016, and to voting for Hillary Rodham Clinton to lead these United States. I am so extremely excited that a woman of character, experience, and discernment can lead our nation. Even as I look forward to the November vote, I am fully enjoying the path to November. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has provided tone and texture to this race. He has forced Senator Clinton to hone her positions on health care, Wall Street and income inequality. He came so amazingly close to toppling her in Iowa that it gave me Post Dramatic Stress Syndrome. She didn’t make my drama hers, though. She has managed, with stoic dignity, to stake her claim for this presidency. My head is with Secretary Hillary Clinton, but my heart is with Senator Bernie Sanders. I realize that he has promised everything and hasn’t shared how he might pay for much of it 6 — free tuition, universal health care, or Wall Street reform. Still, his energetic bluster has been a galvanizing factor in a race that might otherwise have been seen as a cakewalk or a coronation. Hillary needs to be pushed as hard as Senator Sanders can push her. And even though Sanders says he does not care about her “damn emails,” the email conversation has to remind Senator Clinton that she has to figure out ways to restore trust among those who support her positions but look askance at the ways she has been too frequently presented. There is an element of sexism in this. Hillary Clinton has been on the national stage for several decades, from the time when her husband, was elected governor of Arkansas in the 1980s. As First Lady, she had to juggle her smarts and her secondary role, blundering as she tried to offer clarity around health care, soaring as she provided rhetorical leadership on women and children’s issues. And since the Clintons left the White House, she SATURDAY, February 13, 2016 Dr. Julianne Malveaux has been nimble and focused as a Senator, managing to make friends in both political parties, and managing to provide solid international leadership as Secretary of State. Were she a man, would she be judged as harshly because some find her “unlikeable”? Would her every facial expression be parsed? Would opponents feel free to comment on her marital business? Thrice-married Donald Trump has spoken of Bill Clinton’s fidelity, but it is documented that he was a big time philanderer. Carly Fiorina says she would have left her husband if he’d cheated like Bill, but we don’t know that, do we? What we know is that Hillary’s gender is a double-edged sword. I cringe whenever she says, “I am woman,” or “the only woman,” or some reference to her clear self-evident gender. But I also cringe when the gender-bashers seem incapable of interpreting her words and her work fairly. That’s not why I’ll vote for Hillary, though. I’ll vote for her because she is a center-left moderate (Bernie Sanders is not in charge of who gets to be a progressive, and I really don’t care as much about labels as about outcomes) who will pragmatically work toward social and economic justice. She isn’t perfect and may, indeed, be fundamentally flawed (as most politicians are), but she has been a consistent advocate for the least and the left out – for children and for elders. Is she weak on Wall Street reform? Absolutely. But as Bernie Sanders Blacks Must control their own coMMunity pushes her, she gets stronger. A year ago, many predicted this race as a dynastic smack down, with Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton winning primaries toeto-toe. Who would have thought that an unhinged demagogue, Donald Trump, would suck much of the air out of the Republican space, leaving babbling bumblers to confuse ad hominem ignorance with issues? The collective performance of the Republican team could not equal that of either Sanders or Clinton, but those R’s keep slogging on. To what end? Do we really want a President who will trash talk Putin, Mexico and the United Nations? Do we want sons of immigrants who do vilely disrespect their ancestors that they’d offer punitive possibilities for citizenship? I’m not really torn between my head and my heart. I’m simply enjoying the excitement of Bernie Sanders, and the way he has galvanized young people, especially, to become politically engaged. I am hoping that his (Continued on page 16) www.chicagocrusader.com CHICAGO CRUSADER 02-13-2016.qxp_Sheriff 9/8/07 2007 2/11/16 1:25 AM Page 7 GOSSIPTARY By Ima Gontellit EDITOR'S NOTE: This column is published as political satire, street gossip and humor, and therefore should not be considered as fact but rather as matter of opinion. But what Ima really finds ironic is that he is going to Springfield to try to settle the odds between the Democrats and the Gubner. You know talking about peace in the valley and stuff. The ironic part is he hasn’t been able to bring any accord between the Democrats, himself and the Republican party the whole eight years he has been in Washington. Many of the annual observances chronicle progress since the passage of laws adopted years ago to ensure that Black citizens and others of color would enjoy all freedoms and benefits that come with citizenship. Yet in recent months, too many headlines have illustrated how multiple forms of injustice still plague Black America. Whether from Ferguson to Flint or Chicago to Cleveland, the barrage of assaults remind us how far our journey towards justice has yet to go. And when it comes to credit and financing, racial disparities remain despite a 42-year-old federal law guaranteeing fair treatment in lending. Four decades ought to be long enough for businesses and corporations to accept and comply with the law of the land. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) of 1974 requires financial institutions to ‘‘make credit equally available to all creditworthy customers without re- gard to sex or marital status.’’ It is illegal for ‘‘any creditor to discriminate against any applicant with respect to any aspect of a credit transaction on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex or marital status, or age.” The above language seems clear and yet, just a few days ago another financing arm of a major auto manufacturer reached a multimillion dollar settlement with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau CFPB) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) for its failure to treat consumers of color fairly. Toyota Motor Credit agreed to pay $21.9 million in restitution to thousands of Black, Asian-Americans and Pacific Islander borrowers. These borrowers paid higher interest rates than White borrowers for their auto loans due to the lender allowing dealers to mark up a borrower’s interest rate for compensation. Toyota Credit also agreed to change its pricing and compensation system to significantly reduce the dealer’s ability to manipulate the interest rate. “No consumer should be forced to pay more money for a loan because of their race or national origin,” said U.S. Attorney Eileen M. Decker of the Central District of California. “This settlement resolves our claims by providing compensation for affected con- Charlene Crowell sumers and seeking to ensure that future loans funded by Toyota reflect equal terms.” Toyota is only the latest perpetrator, extending a series of actions by law enforcement to address discrimination in auto lending. Last May, Evergreen Bank Group, based in Oak Brook, IL settled charges that it violated the ECOA by charging Latino and Black borrowers higher interest rates on motorcycle financing. The bank settled the claim by paying $395,000. Months later in July, Honda Finance Corporation agreed to pay $24 million on similar violations. In September, Ohio-based Fifth Third Bank agreed to pay $18 million and cooperate with an independent administrator appointed to identify affected borrowers and distribute restitution. The largest of the recent cases came two years earlier when in 2013 Ally Bank agreed to pay $98 million in civil penalties and restitution. This enforcement action found that approximately 100,000 Black borrowers, 125,000 Latino borrowers, and 10,000 Asian/Pacific Islander borrowers paid higher rates for their auto loans than similarly situated white borrowers. Even more troubling, just one year later Ally paid an additional $38 million to borrowers for discrimination that occurred after the initial settlement. Despite progress resulting from these recent enforcement actions, discrimination in the market remains, says Chris Kukla, a senior vice president with the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL). “The terms of the settlement continue to move in the right direction,” noted Kukla. “However, dealer discretion to mark up interest rates remains an unfair and hidden practice with continued potential for discrimination. The only effective way to completely eliminate the discriminatory impact and the unfairness of hidden dealer interest rate markups is to end the practice altogether.” At $1 trillion, auto lending is the third-largest source of consumer debt, behind that of mortgages and student loans. CRL has also determined through survey research that even though Black and Latino consumers make more of an effort to negotiate auto interest rates than others, they still wind up paying higher rates. “Law enforcement must continue to vigilantly and swiftly act when they uncover discriminatory or unfair lending as they have done with other enforcement actions,” continued Kukla. “The recent news that Ally paid an additional $38 million in restitution to compensate borrowers harmed after Ally’s settlement with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Department of Justice shows that the issue of discrimination due to car dealer interest rate markup is real and needs to end.” Here’s hoping this Black History Month fair-minded people of all races and ethnicities will better understand that the struggle for justice must continue. Jackson says Engaging Wall Street is the next step in the struggle By Glenn Reedus Independent Journalist While the phrase “the struggle continues” is a familiar one, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. sees the struggle as an evolutionary process that now must be taken to Wall Street and the financial markets. Jackson, founder of the civil rights organization, Rainbow/PUSH, said the struggle is in its fourth stage. He explained the thrust today is closing the economic disparity that exists between Wall Street and the MLK avenues around the country. His organization, along with the Citizenship Education Fund set a program in motion January 15, 1997 to eliminate the multi-billion-dollar trade deficit between Wall Street and minority communities. The initiative, tagged The Wall Street Project will have its 19th annual summit in New York City, N.Y. February 16-19. A major objective of the project is to “increase the hiring of minorities, the appointment of more minorities corporate boards, and the allocation of capital to minority companies,” Jackson noted. www.chicagocrusader.com Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. He also refers to this mission as the four fundamental stages of the struggle, and the latest is the fourth stage. The preceding stages involved the abolition of slavery, followed by ending “legal apartheid’ or segregation and the third was the right to vote. “But the fourth stage, beyond freedom is equality. That means access to capital and access to technology. I meet so many people who are so brilliant. They are inventors, scientists and technicians, but they cannot get start-up capital. They cannot get lenders to deem them creditworthy. The long-time civil rights leader related the story of a former AT&T employee who had 20 years of experience with the company. “She had the tech background and wanted to strike out on her own but couldn’t get the capital needed to do that.” Jackson recalled. “The Wall Street Project is about access to banks and financial institutions,” the one-time aide to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. noted. He compared minority access to capital and opportunities at tech companies to the recent ruckus about the absence of Black nomi- nees at the recent Academy Awards nomination. “The Oscars is typical where you have a college of ‘choosers’ who can’t even choose the greatest African-American actors. The same is true with Silicon Valley. We can do the work, but can’t get the jobs,” he emphasized. Rainbow/PUSH’s decision several years ago to buy stock in the major tech firms gave Jackson and supporters opportunities to speak at the companies’ annual meetings. Additionally, they received the usual information stockholders get, including details about performance, profits and diversity. He offered that during a meeting with Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, Cook discussed that prior to the Wall Street Project, “we (tech firms) have not been challenged to do better with minority, particularly African-American hiring.’ Jackson said “he who will be free must strike the first blow. We struck that blow.” Jackson compared the executives of tech companies to the staunch segregationists of the old South noting that the tech execs we0re the exact opposite. “They were Blacks Must control their own coMMunity somewhat embarrassed for their brands and didn’t take old hardlines stances.” Silicon Valley companies are shortchanging non-tech minority companies too, according to Jackson. He said Black-owned law firms, ad agencies, marketing and public relations companies, as well as a number of other small businesses show up in the zero column when the tech companies’ totals in those areas are added. “We must be persistent. It is not a talent deficit we are looking at. It is a deficit of opportunity. We have young whites who come out of Stanford and can get hired right away,” adding experienced Black applicants, if hired will likely end up reporting to the recent grad. “This is a great frontier we must conquer,” Jackson opined. Black people “have economic leverage, and we have to use it scientifically,” Jackson said. He noted that means strong negotiating and one of the factors must be educating inner city youth to do jobs and be hired by the tech companies, rather than those companies importing workers from other countries. It is the first and only African-American children’s museum in the country. On Saturday, Feb. 20, in conjunction with Black History Month, the Bronzeville Children’s Museum will present “Preserving Our Children’s Futures” as they celebrate 18 years of educating young children on the accomplishments and contributions African Americans have made to society. In addition to the museum’s exhibit children will enjoy crafts, face painting, music and storytelling. The first exhibit is called “African American Inventors Changing People Lives!” This exhibit focuses on the contributions that African Americans have made in the food products industry, medical and technology inventions. Children and adults will learn about inventors like Lonnie Johnson, who invented the super soaker water gun. Johnson, along with Madame C. J. Walker, George W. On Sunday, January 31, Theresa “TeeSee” Fambro left her final mark as the legendary columnist for the Chicago Defender. Her story was about life. It took 80 years to complete and it’s a masterpiece that everyone around town is still talking about as thousands say farewell to this great woman. TeeSee’s life may have ended, but her story will be told by many generations to come. Her column would long be remembered as her personal history book of Black life in Chicago. About her column. There’s that saying “To Know Him (Her) is to Love Him (Her).” But to know “TeeSee,” you had to know her column. She wrote it for the Chicago Defender beginning in 1961. She always had lots of people to visit, places to see and words to say. This enterprising journalist brought a “Who’s Who” and a “What’s What” TeeSee in earlier times to Black Chicago. If your event or name appeared in that column you had arrived. Often carrying a bag including a camera TeeSee’s Town, TeeSee’s style and zest for life was part of her brand that touched many lives. In the Chicago Crusader archives, there are photos of her being everywhere and with everyone. Even modern day celebrities and artists such as Common and Jaime Theresa Fambro Hooks Foxx found themselves in photos with TeeSee. She was always in her finest threads at functions, charity events and grand affairs. Who can forget that one-piece vintage dress she wore in 1973 at an event at McCormick Place. Even during a fitness class she took in Washington Park in 1976, TeeSee’s nails were polished, her hair beautifully made up and her cute short set dazzling. Her social graces charmed many. Her style turned heads. As a journalist, TeeSee always had her camera everywhere she went. She was the master of her craft and stay ahead of her competitors. Whether in the Black press or mainstream media, newspapers don’t produce many society columnists like TeeSee anymore. You just don’t see TeeSee’s anymore. TeeSee retired in April 2015. TeeSee’s life began in Chicago on May 5, 1935. She graduated from then Parker High School (It’s now Robeson High School). She attended the University of Illinois, Roosevelt University and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in their fashion Design Department. She has earned countless awards and was a member of numerous social organizations. Just a few of those organizations were: the Metropolitan Clusters, Drifters, Dozens, Mannequins, the Moles and the Carousels. Her biggest and favorite organization of them all was the Black community. She earned awards including the Black Woman’s Expo Phenomenal Woman Award, the Black Public Relations Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the Russ Ewing Legacy Award of Excellence and NABJ’s Outstanding Journalist Award. Early in her career she worked for Parker House Sausage Company, special assistant to the president of Olive Harvey College and for Philco-Ford’s Chicago Residential Manpower Center and Coors Brewing Company. Some of her public relations clients included ETA Creative Art Foundation, the Abraham Lincoln Center and The Woodlawn Organization. Dorothy R. Leavell, publisher of the Chicago Crusader said she had worked with TeeSee in 1980 to organize and carry out the plan for the 1980 National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) convention, held in Chicago. Mrs. Leavell said, “TeeSee was a tireless worker and knew everyone that we reached out to make the convention one of the most memorable in NNPA’s history. She will be missed as one of Chicago’s most colorful citizens.” TeeSee’s affiliations included such notable organizations as the Girl Scouts, YWCA, Adoption Information Services, Midwest Sickle Cell Association, and the West Chesterfield Garden Club. She also served as president of the National Association of Media Women and as chair of the Chicago chapter. The scripture reminds us in Psalm 103:2 to ‘Praise the Lord…and forget not all his benefits.’ When you think of what God has done, it’s difficult not to have tears of joy and sheer gratitude. The quickest way to forget is when you fail to be grateful for what has been signed, sealed and delivered to your doorstep. The bottom line is nothing is insignificant. I can’t iterate enough that everything that you have and all that you are is because God has blessed and allowed it to be so—period. Yes, you have education but he gave you the brains, connection, finances and will to go. You received favor and promotion on the job because of his grace. Home, family, health, joy, peace and determination—it’s all in the category of blessings. Everything that concerns you is significant be- By Effie Rolfe Think Him for the Insignificant Things—the things we so often take for granted. Yes, I said ‘think Him’ because as an older lady once said ‘every time I thank on the Lord—I think Him.’ This may sound grammatically incorrect but it is indeed a powerful truth. The phrase ‘every time I thank on the Lord—I think Him’ is a classic example of how your thoughts and your praise are inevitably interwoven. It is imperative that we are grateful each day. Thank God for everything—because nothing is insignificant!! Think about all of the blessings you have been given. What can you do—what do you have—who are the people in your life? Whatever, however, whenever or wherever it is—God did it and Effie Rolfe cause it’s the sum total of you. Human nature dictates that we tend to overlook or take for granted those things that we have become comfortable with. Why? Familiarity breeds contempt. In other words, when we become familiar with certain things or people, we often take it or them for granted. We pray for a job and in less than one year—we complain about the work or the boss. You knew he was the one. After three years of marriage—everything that was so right has now become so wrong. That new car and house was the answer to your prayer—now you rarely have time to clean it. Likewise with a ton of other blessings—what was once a treasure is now being treated as a step above trash. So my point—don’t’ stop thinking about God’s goodness. When I think about the Lord—I thank Him. Not only is it a constant reminder of how abundantly blessed you are. But also, thinking about ‘everything’ God has bestowed upon you is cause to pause for an automatic praise break. Remember nothing is insignificant—big or small—it’s all-good because it’s all God. Have you thanked God for the ‘insignificant things’in your life...? What’s the value of your life…? ©Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. The Crusader Gospel Corner At 90 years strong, the inimitable Reverend Clay Evans, preacher, traveling evangelist, noted civil rights leader, founder and organizer of the historic Fellowship Baptist Church of Chicago is a witness to the grace and mercy of God and concurs with the psalmist in his daily confession; I will bless the Lord at all times (Psalm 34:1), knowing that my help comes from the Lord (Psalm 121). The Clay Evans Scholarship Fund Chicago announced the imminent release of the first Clay Evans Heritage Series. The series will highlight vintage recordings celebrating over 60 years of the prolific preaching and musical works of Reverend Clay Evans and the renowned 200 voice Fellowship Choir, which anchored the “What a Fellowship” hour heard via radio and television across the country and abroad. “Reverend Clay Evans is an icon, not only in Chicago but all over the world,” noted Michael Evans, CESF Chicago Chairman. “Reverend Evans has touched the lives of so many through the radio and television ministry of Fellowship along with the numerous recordings and travels of the Fellowship Choir. The Clay Evans Heritage Series gives us the opportunity to remember and relive the glory days of Reverend Evans and the Fellowship Choir from the beginning.” Produced by sons of Fellowship Royal Mickey Warren, Curtis Fondren and Gospel sage Gregory Gay, the first installment provides remastered music never before released on CD along with a special unreleased track of Rev. Evans “Live at the Ship” leading the congregation in a rousing rendition of “Trust In the Lord.” A special edited version of the track heads to radio the week www.chicagocrusader.com Reverend Clay Evans of February 11th, while a special extended version will be featured on the CD scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2016. “Trust in the Lord is a jewel in the crown,” said Royal Warren. “We were at the end of his message one Sunday and the tape was rolling, he started singing and we went with him. Amazingly, it got left on the cutting room floor; and ended up going in the vault for some 3 decades. We found it, listened to it and immediately thought this needs to be heard. While Reverend Evans made this recording almost 35 years ago, the message is timeless and certainly relevant for the situations that we face today.” Proceeds from the Clay Evans Heritage Series will benefit the educational initiatives of the Clay Evans Scholarship Fund. Later this month, the Chicago Public Library will unveil a special display of artifacts and memorabilia chronicling the preacher’s 60 years in ministry commemorating Black History Month. *** Chicago Pastor, activist and organizer, Rev. Paul L. Jakes, Jr. invites everyone to attend the Haven of Rest Missionary Baptist Church, 7925 South Chicago Avenue in Chicago this Sunday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m. Jakes will be the featured Guest Speaker during the church’s early morning service. “We are in the Black History Month celebration and I’m honored to be the speaker for the early morning service.” Although, Jakes ran for Mayor of the City of Chicago in 2003, he shared, “I won’t bring any politics but rather a message to give spiritual uplift and to encourage the community in wake of so much bloodshed in the city of Chicago. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jakes said we can ask, ‘Where Rev. Paul L. Jakes, Jr. do we go from here?’ “This may be a great fellowship to start the year,” said the Senior Pastor of The New Tabernacle of Faith Baptist Church at 531 N. Kedzie in Chicago for the past 23 years. Also, currently, The Haven of Rest MBC does not have a full time Pastor. The interim Pastor is Rev. Frances Lewis. *** Chicago Radio Personality and Billboard Charting Artist Dana Divine launches “Chicago Sing-AGram” just in time for Valentine’s Blacks Must control their own coMMunity Day, but available for any occasion, Chicago Sing-A-Gram will deliver a personal message in song to someone special. Known for her angelic voice, the Lyric soprano was a longtime member of the church and was there since the inception of the Christian Tabernacle Church, where Pastor Maceo Woods presid ed for the past 56 years. Sykes was also regarded as a Charter member of the Christian Tabernacle Church and Concert Choir. For years the choir recorded countless albums with Savoy Records and Sykes led many of their most popular hit songs including “The Name of Jesus, Just a Closer Walk With Thee, Deliver Me” and a remake of Andre’ Crouch’s classic entitled “Through It All.” According to DeAndre Patterson, recording artist and Pastor of Destiny Worship Center and Miracle Revival Center in Maywood, “The first group of singers that started with Rev. Maceo Woods was the Christian Tabernacle Ensemble, which included Doris Sykes, Pearl McCombs, Eugene Borden, Lawrence Ester and Melvin Smothers. Gospel Greats that came through there like Maggie Bell Childs (I’ll Trade A Lifetime), who use to sing with the Thompson Community Singers, Gloria Griffin of the Roberta Martin Singers and others including George Jordan, who wrote the Sunday favorite, ‘Jesus Can Work It Out.’” Patterson continued, “My Godfather—Pastor Maceo Woods made hits and developed gospel all stars and Doris Sykes was one of them.” Additionally, each year fans loved her voice and flocked to hear her during the annual Gospel Supreme presented by Christian Tabernacle Concert Choir for the past 50 years plus. And I’m sad that a woman who might knock it out of the park can also be kicked to the curb if this campaign becomes corrosive. Congressman Stephanie Tubbs Jones was a sorority sister (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, of course), and a fierce legislator. She stuck by Hillary Clinton in 2008 even after then-Senator Barack Obama entered the Presidential race and earned the endorsement and sup- port of many “mainstream” African Americans. Stephanie and Hillary had “heart” with each other. As a woman, Hillary can’t out shout Bernie without appearing shrill. She can’t out-snide him without appearing *itchy. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) These young people aren’t in a position to just leave CSU and transfer their credits to another school and still graduate on time. Even if all of their credits would transfer, this late in the academic season; there is no guarantee financial aid will be available if needed. While Gov. Bruce Rauner might not care about Black people getting educated, there are more than two dozen Black elected officials in Springfield who should. Every Black state senator and Black state representative should be joining with 16 one another and devising a plan to keep CSU open and then make it whole. There are probably some legislators who are CSU alums. The only voice coming out of the legislative Black Caucus about saving the school year is State. Sen. Emil Jones III. HIs family has strong ties to the school. Surely other Black legislators understand how difficult it will be to get back on track if the school has to close - even for a week. Right after taking office Rauner appointed the Rev. James Meeks to head the state board of education. That SATURDAY, February 13, 2016 was obvious payback for the preacher’s support. It is beyond disappointing to watch Meeks pimp his own people for an appointment. Meeks has to understand that CSU has played a vital role in the Black community for all of the second half of the 20th Century. As a former legislator, he should be able to suggest a loophole to prevent CSU from closing while Rauner continues his battle with Mike Madigan, speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives. Given that Meeks has proven worthless in this fight, we all need to repeat- edly contact our state elected officials right away and encourage them to find a way. This issue can’t be as insurmountable as their collective silence makes it appear to be. Rev. Paul L. Jakes, Jr., pastor of New Tabernacle of Faith Missionary Baptist Church, said Black churches should open their doors to students and offer classes, field trips and other activities to help weather a possible school crisis. “The Black church has always played a role in the community and this could be one of them,” said Jakes in an interview with the Chicago Crusader. This week, CPS added to the city’s debt burden by borrowing another $725 million at an interest rate of 8.5 percent. This bond deal is on top of the $1 billion in auction-rate securities CPS issued from 2003 - 2007.” Because of the high interest rates, CPS will pay an estimated $100 million more in today’s dollars than it would have on traditional fixed-rate bonds, over the life of the deal. In the latest battle, thousands of teachers on February 4, demonstrated in downtown Chicago after CPS proposed to layoff 1,000 teachers. The proposal also includes taking 7 percent of the CTU’s pay and putting it into pensions. The proposal came after CTU President and the “Big Bargain- Rev. Paul L. Jakes, Jr. ing Team” rejected a contract offer that would have prevented layoffs, but would have required teachers to make higher contributions to their pensions. In addition, the deal would have included raises of 2.75 percent in the next school year and then 3 percent for each of the next two years. More raises were proposed through June 2019. After the contract offer was rejected, CPS and the CTU entered the final legal stage of negotiations that started a 105-day countdown to a strike. Teachers would have to wait until May to walk off the job. With no resolution in sight, Jakes believes now is the time to prepare for the worst. Jakes said he is concerned that students left on the streets would contribute to Chicago’s high number of gun shootings. According to the latest figures, 312 people have been shot this year in Chicago. The number is higher than the number of shootings that occurred around this time last year. With few options available, Jakes believes the Black church could fill a need in the Black community. He said he would look into bringing together pastors and ask them to use their buildings and services in the event of a strike. “This could be a serious problem for the Black community if a teachers strike occurs,” Jakes said. “What will happen to our youth? Where are they going to go?” FIGHTING TO KEEP HIS JOB (Continued from page 1) the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters lined Stratton’s coffers with $51,000. In all, Stratton has a total of $389,287 in campaign contributions. The amount is likely to climb as more organizations and Black leaders attempt to oust Dunkin with bigname endorsements. Before she took the spotlight, Stratton had been a part of Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s inner circle, serving as a top aide and director for the Center for Public Safety and Justice at UIC. She also serves as executive director of the Cook County Justice Advisory Council. Stratton, a DePaul University Law School graduate, ran her own firm and worked as an administrative judge for the city of Chicago before joining the county. Despite her resume, Stratton has never held a public so received endorsements from several union organizations. Sources say House Speaker Mike Madigan also supports Stratton and wants Dunkin out of his House. Dunkin infuriated Madigan, numerous Democrats and many Black leaders in November, when he refused to vote on a bill that would have reversed Governor Bruce Rauner’s cuts to the state’s Child Care Assistance program. Responding to heavy criticism, Dunkin said the bill was unnecessary because he helped negotiate a compromise with Rauner. In the Black community, Dunkin’s move was viewed as an act of betrayal. For months, Black lawmakers in Springfield and Chicago have battled Rauner’s proposed cuts that threatened to leave thousands of mothers without money to help them pay for critical daycare services while they downtown and some of the poorest neighborhoods on the South Side, an area that heavily relies on social programs. Since Rauner’s childcare cuts, health officials say 100 providers closed their doors and about 5,000 parents lost their jobs because they were unable to find affordable day care for their children. In a survey, 70 percent of parents say the cuts affected their ability to pay rent and buy food. An estimated 10,000 children who were eligible before Rauner’s cuts, now remain shut out of program. Dunkin blames Madigan for the state’s budget impasse; Black leaders are angry that Dunkin did not stick with Democrats to help reverse the cuts when he had a chance. On Feb. 7, healthcare leaders called on Rauner and Dunkin to withdraw slim, so were her campaign contributions, which initially drew several $1,000 and $500 donations. The amounts are considered small in the era of Super PACS and bloated campaign war chests. After he made several controversial political moves, Dunkin is struggling to shake an image of being a “sellout,” who betrayed the Black community by aligning himself with a Republican governor. Some of Dunkin’s past donors have switched their support to Stratton’s campaign. Her donations have not only increased in numbers, but also in size. On Dec. 23, she received $25,000. Weeks later, the donations were in the six figures. Dunkin responded on Feb. 1 with a record setting $500,000 donation from the Illinois for Growth and Opportunity, a Republican-backed organization. It’s an amount that could have dimmed Stratton’s hopes for unseating the controversial lawmaker. It did not. Days after Dunkin made headlines for his monstrous haul; dozens of community organizations and prominent Black leaders have come to Stratton’s defense and fattened her campaign war chest. The outpouring of support has set off an intense, high stakes political race that is raising eyebrows in the Black community. The donations have put Stratton within striking distance—at least in contri- STATE REPRESENTATIVE KEN Dunkin is fighting to keep his job as he battles an image as a butions—of her opponent. Dunkin stood up and clapped and yelled “Yes!” Doubts about Dunkin still linger. On Feb. 5–one day after Stratton made news by bagging several highprofile endorsements from angry Black leaders—Dunkin held a packed meeting in the conference room of the Chicago Defender’s office for members of the Black Press, including the Chicago Crusader.Accompanying Dunkin was Cory Jobe, director of the Illinois Office of Tourism and another official. Dunkin, who chairs the Illinois House Tourism and Convention Committee, promised to funnel more state dollars for advertisements in Black newspapers, but when it came to details, Dunkin and Jobe were unable to give specifics about how much a piece of the pie was available and how Chicago’s Black Press could reap state tourism dollars. Perhaps, the biggest problem—as one press member pointed out—there is no money available because of the budget impasse. To some, the spotty presentation and unanswered questions were an insult to a media that has often struggled for equality in obtaining advertising dollars. With Dunkin’s image tanking in the media and elections just over a month away, some Blacks are left wondering if this was another desperate attempt by the veteran politician to buy favorable press coverage in the Black community. After all, when was the last time Dunkin held a press conference to try to steer tourism dollars to the Black media?
