the Conference this past year in
softball, and making the South
Egyptian Conference the past two
years.
Ashley’s most memorable moments at VHS include all of the
times with her friends last year and

were in their underwear trying to
push the Bronco out.”

about being chosen as candidate
Ashley said, “I am very excited
about being chosen for this honor.
This is going to be even more special because I was chosen with

McCoy, Tony Torret at the Braves

walking back from Bowman Bottoms in the dark after getting
Kyle’s Bronco stuck. By the end
of the night she had sprained her
ankle, her clothes were torn, and
Jake Smith was in his underwear.

about being chosen as Queen Candidate Amanda said, “I love our

Queen Candidate Escorts
Ashley Hill & Drew Wilkins Aly Steele & Travis Verkamman
Ashley Hill’s escort is Drew
Wilkins. Drew’s parents are Andy
and Christi Wilkins. He also has
a brother, Casey, who is a Freshman at VHS. Drew has known
Ashley since she was born. They
have been close friends forever
and are first cousins.
According to Drew, Ashley
should be the next Homecoming
Queen because she is honest, caring, hilarious, and just fun to be
around. In fact, his favorite thing
about her is her humor. “Ashley
can always take a joke and can
also deliver her share. She is a
regular Ray Finkle,” Drew said.
Drew also sends a personal
message to his candidate. “Hey
Ashley! You deserve this for your
17 years of being a sweetheart to
everyone. Whatever happens,
you’ll still be my favorite person.
Love, Drewby.”
Aly’s Steele’s escort for
Homecoming
is
Travis
Verkamman. His parents are
Marilyn Wright–Verkamman and
Will Verkamman. He also has a
brother, Justin, who is a Freshmen
at VHS.
Aly is Travis’s girlfriend and
they have known each other for
four years. “She was the new girl
at school and I wore a clip-on tie
to try to impress her. She was really cute, so I told the teacher that
I forgot my reading book so I
could share a book with the new
chick,” said Travis.
He believes that Aly should
be voted Homecoming Queen,
because she is sweet, beautiful,
loving, trusting, humble, honest,
and has a bodacious body. The
thing that Travis loves most about
Aly is her beautiful dark brown
eyes and the way she always
knows what to say.
“You other three ladies are
going down,” said Travis.

Ashley Trover & Joe Wright
Amanda Threlkeld & Blake Curry
Joe Wright will be escorting
Ashley Trover in this year’s
Homecoming. Joe is the son of
David and Anita Wright. Joe is
one of three sons. His brothers are
Jason (21) and Josh (25).
Joe and Ashley first met their
Freshmen year in high school.
They were Sophomore attendants
together. Joe thinks Ashley should
be the next Queen because she is
sweet to everyone, and in his eyes
there is no one more qualified to
represent Vienna High School.
What he likes most about
Ashley is that she is so easy to get
along with and is not afraid to be
a dork sometimes.
Joe said, “It is a great honor
to be escorting Ashley.”
Blake Curry will be escorting Amanda Threlkeld during
Homecoming this year. Blake’s
parents are Chris and Lynell
Watson. He has a half brother,
Zack Curry, who is nine. He also
has two-step brothers Brett and
Brock Watson, who are 16 and 14.
“I had a crush on Amanda in
Freshmen Reading Skills. So we
started talking and hanging out,”
said Blake. They have been
friends for four years now.
Blake had some very nice
things to say about Amanda. “She
is a close friend who would do
anything for me. Amanda is a very
good person and would help anybody who needed it.” According
to Blake this is one of the many
reasons why she should be the
next Homecoming Queen.
In Blake’s words, “My favorite thing about T is she’s funny and
makes me laugh.”

Meet the Eagles
On Friday, November 9,
Vienna High School Athletics
held its 2nd annual Meet the
Eagles. Every year, before basketball season begins, this event
takes place to introduce VHS’s
boys and girls basketball teams,
the cheerleading squad, and the
dance team.
The night began with the girls
team playing a ten minute half, followed by an eight minute half. The
first ten minutes of play, the ladies
were mixed, some varsity and
some J.V. Coach Hill and Coach
Waters each coached a team. The
following eight minute quarter
was Varsity against J.V.
In-between quarters of the
girls game, Mrs. Kreuter introduced all of the VHS Dancers.
They did not perform a dance due
to the fact that not all of them
could participate that night.
Tina Penrod took the mic next
to introduce the VHS Cheerleaders. After the introduction they
performed a cheer at center court.
Next, the Freshmen boys basketball team played an intersquad
game, accompanied by two
Sophomores.
Page by Caryn Hill
The Varsity boys basketball
team played two ten minute quarters against each other. Coach
Green coached one team while
Coach Harper coached the other.
The night was a success.
Many people turned out to “Meet
the Eagles.” If you missed the second annual Meet the Eagles, you
can still catch them in action
throughout the season. VHS
cheerleaders perform at all girls
and guys home games. The VHS
dancers also perform at most boys
home games.

Vi Hi Opinion
Do you think particpating in sports is
an important part of high school?
Page 17
December 2001
Sarah McFarlin-Senior
No, I don’t think it is important to play sports in
school, but if you enjoy
sports then I think you
should play them. I don’t
see it as an important part
of school.
Jenny Swier-Senior
It kind of is important,
because it gets people
involved in school, and it
helps keep the students
trying to get good grades
to be able to play on the
team.
Ray Gurley-Junior
Sports are pretty important in my point of view,
but not in school. While
I’m in school, there are
more important things like
the dance team and the
cheerleaders.
Sheena McCormick-Junior
I think sports help students
keep from getting into
trouble, keep them busy,
and give them positive
attitudes.
Kala Sims-Sophomore
Yes, because when people
get involved they find more
positive outlets, practice
getting along with others,
the value of commitment to
something other than themselves, and teamwork.
Andy Baumann-Sophomore
Yes, I feel that if you are
in sports you can express
how you feel about the
school by playing your
hardest and showing your
will, and you want to play
the game.
Jennifer Reeder-Freshman
Yes, I think that it’s important because it gives some
people a sense of accomplishment. It gives kids confidence because they are participating in extracurricular
activities.
Jamie Kerley-Freshman
Absolutely. It lets you get
to know, not only your own
fellow schoolmates, but it
also lets you meet kids from
other schools that share
your same interests.
Sports are also a good way
to release energy and have
fun at the same time.

Information provided by Internet site
http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco.htm
Smoking = Death
by Heather Russell
Tobacco is the leading cause of
preventable death in the United
States. It causes more than 400,000
deaths each year. This “disease” kills
more people each year than AIDS,
alcohol, drug abuse, car crashes,
murders, suicides, and fires combined. It causes an annual cost of
more than 50 billion dollars in direct
medical costs. The worst fact of all
is that 80% of all the adults that
smoke now, started smoking before
they were 18 years of age. Nearly
3,000 young people a day become
regular smokers.
The last poll taken, asking students in middle school whether or
not they smoke, was startling. One
in eight students reported to using
some type of tobacco within the past
month. In high school the same poll
was taken, and more than one-third
of all high school students reported
to have used some form of tobacco
in the past month. The smoking rate
for male and female students was basically the same, so don’t think it is
only one group that smokes.
Smoking can cause many health
consequences, some of which include: reduced lung growth, addiction, respiratory effects, lower level
of lung function, shortness of breath,
lung cancer, slower heart beat, heart
disease, and strokes. These health
problems are just a few of the many
problems that develop over time, yet
you could experience some of these
affects when you first start. These
effects get worse the longer you
smoke and continue to escalate
throughout adulthood.
So what if smoking causes
health problems? These problems
may never affect some people, but
smoking does change your appearance. The smoke causes your hair
and clothes to stink, stains your teeth,
gives you very bad breath, gives
sores of the, and bleeding of the
mouth.
Smoking also affects your athletic performance. In sports, you
generally have to run. What happens when you smoke and try to play
sports? You run slower, cannot run
as far, have shortness of breath,
strain muscles because oxygen can
not get to the limbs, and strain your
heart. Once again, you may never
be affected by these things, but if you
are you may have to quit playing
sports all together. So why take the
risk and smoke?
One misconception of smoking
is that even though many famous
Dahncke
Pharmacy
athletes and movie stars use tobacco
on TV, the majority don’t use it in
reality. In fact, many of them are
totally against it and are involved in
efforts to promote being and staying smoke free. On television, the
actors and actresses who smoke are
always beautiful and successful, yet
the movies never show you characters who have cancer because they
have smoked.
What is one thing that you can
do to prevent smoking? Well, you
can hang around with other teens
who do not smoke and play sports.
When you are around others who
do not smoke you are more likely
to say no to smoking than when you
are by yourself or around students
who do smoke. When a student
plays sports, their self-confidence
goes up, they have reduced peer
pressure, a greater health awareness, and they get additional counseling from coaching staff about not
smoking. Playing sports in particular really helps girls. They act more
independent, have a chance to make
friends, are more relaxed, and have
a positive sense of self worth.
6 Facts about Teens
and Smoking
♦ Most people start using tobacco
before they finish high school. This
means that if you stay smoke-free in
school, you will probably never
smoke.
♦ Most teens that smoke are addicted to nicotine. When they try to
quit they can’t because they go
through withdrawal symptoms.
♦ Tobacco is often the first drug
used by kids who use alcohol and
illegal drugs, like marijuana.
♦ Kids who start smoking are more
likely to get lower grades in school,
tend to hang out with others who
smoke, have low self-image, and
don’t know how to say no to tobacco.
♦ Cigarette advertisements are designed to make people think that
smoking is cool and that everybody
does it. These misleading ads appear to increase kids’ risk of smoking.
♦ People working in their communities (kids who warn each other
about the dangers of smoking, for
example, and programs that make it
harder for stores to sell cigarettes to
kids) are helping to keep kids away
from tobacco.
