VHS students named Illinois State Scholars
Article by Ethan Haney
The Illinois Student Assistance
Commission has announced this
year’s Illinois State Scholars. The
Illinois State Scholar Program
recognizes Illinois high school
students for outstanding academic
achievement. Students ranking in
the top ten percent of the state’s
high school graduating seniors have
been named Illinois State Scholars.
This year, six Vienna High
School Seniors achieved this
distinction. “We are very proud of
the achievement of these students,”
said Vienna High School Principal
Patrick Harner. “This is a great
accomplishment,” he added. Each
Illinois State Scholar will receive a
Certiicate of Achievement, a paid
subscription to the online version
of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
Vienna High School’s Illinois
State Scholars include Chris
Ditterline, Tyler Harner, Jacob
McGill, Nicole Howell, Harley
Youtzy and Peyton Smith.
Illinois State Scholar, Nicole
Howell, was very excited to have
been chosen. She said, “Having
been named an Illinois State
Scholar came as quite a shock to
me when I was congratulated for
being one of six in the school. I
knew I had decent scores for my
GPA and ACT, but never anything
that would have named me a top
academic student in the State. It
is an achievement I am very proud
to have and I congratulate Harley,
Peyton, Tyler, Chris, and Jacob on
their success as well.”
Selection is based on ACT test
score results (including the Prairie
State Achievement Exam) and
class rank at the end of the sixth
semester in high school. While
the program does not provide a
monetary award, the designation
as an Illinois State Scholar can be
added to applications for college VHS Illiniois State Scholars. Back row (left to right): Chris Ditterline, Tyler Harner,

Prom Committee taking steps forward
Article by Ethan Haney
Prom Committee plays a very
important role in the preparation
and execution of Prom. They
decide the theme of Prom night,
and where it will be held.
Prom Committee is currently
discussing the plans and activities
for Prom at their meetings.
Prom Committee sponsor, Mrs.
Palmer, is very excited about prom.
She said, “We have had a couple
meetings, and chose our location.
After homecoming, we will get
busy with details. We are looking
forward to having an awesome
prom!”
There are many new additions
to this year’s prom. The Prom
Committee has decided to eliminate
the after prom. There is also talk
of having a promenade at the high
school in order for students to walk
in with their dates and take pictures.
This will help to save time and
make sure prom starts when it is
supposed to.
This year, Prom will be held at
the Carbondale Civic Center.
Prom Committee member Chris
Ditterline proudly stated, “I feel we
have a great Prom Committee, and
two very amazing sponsors, Mr.
and Mrs. Palmer, who are going to
create a Prom for everyone to enjoy
and remember.”
The Prom is set for Saturday,
April 28. VHS Juniors and Seniors
are eligible to attend Prom. VHS
Freshmen or Sophomores that has
been asked by a Junior or Senior will
also be able to attend. The theme for
this year’s prom is still being decided
by the Prom Committee and will be
announced soon.

Article by Brandi McCuan
Our Section 25 Vienna FFA

to carry one of the dozers, or two
train carts.
Dylan Baker said, “The
Caterpillar factory was mainly
90% in house, which is where all
the parts are manufactured and
assembled this was interesting
because it is mainly an American
built machine.”
Those who attended the
trip were Jake Stroud, Andrew
Rockwell, Brent Taylor, Brent

Mrs. Will-Henn in a ight, and she
practically laid him out and he went
running back to his seat.
When Jessica was told that she
was selected to be a Homecoming

SHOCKED! I am also very happy,
seeing that I haven’t been elected to
be on court before. I am very happy
that they chose me and the other

On December 12, Vienna High School
students gained a tremendous amount of
knowledge about the effects of alcohol and
drugs.
Judge Christy Solverson and Judge Mark
Shaner, members of the Illinois Judge’s
Association, gathered at VHS to give a
presentation on “7 Reasons To Leave The
Party.”
The project was founded in 2002 by Judge
Mark Drummond. The project is an attempt to
make young teens realize how being at a party
with drugs and alcohol can affect someone’s
life. The judges used examples from actual
court cases, and gave young people seven good
reasons to leave a party where drugs and alcohol
are present.
Judge Solverson and Judge Shaner explained
the seven reasons to leave a party: Death, no car,
no money, no trust, a criminal record, no privacy
and no time.
The presentation focused on the dangers of
drinking and doing drugs.
Also present was Chief of Police Jim Miller,
who gave VHS senior, Austin Woolverton, a
portable breathalyzer test. This was just one test
that can be used to determine the alcohol content
of an individual.
Vienna Grade School 7th and 8th grades were
also present to watch the presentation.

2012 Yearbook cover design winners chosen
Every year in Mrs. Clayton’s class, each
student designs a front and back yearbook
cover, and the actual yearbook cover will be
chosen out of the designs submitted. This
year there were over 100 entries.
For the 2011-2012 Yearbook, the student
whose front cover design was chosen was
senior, Dylan Latham, and the back design
was by Senior, Tyler Harner. Part of Junior
Ellie Bakel’s back cover concept was also
chosen. Yearbook Staff and Mr. Palmer
chose the cover designs. They chose based on
originality, creativeness, and professionalism.
The designs pictured are the original designs
Dylan Latham and Tyler Harner submitted for
the front and back covers of the 2011-2012
yearbook. Yearbook Staff and Mr. Palmer will
incorporate elements of Ellie’s design before
printing them.
Ellie said that her design took two days to
make using Photoshop. She was excited that
part of her design was chosen, and she said,
“Tyler and I are on the back cover so I’m
pretty pumped.”
Mr. Palmer said, “Thank you to all those who
entered, and we hope to continue the contest
for a long time.”
The 2011-2012 Yearbook front and back cover designs were chosen by the Yearbook Staff and Mr. Palmer. The winners

Project Graduation hosts Fazoli’s Dinner
Article by Harley Youtzy
On Friday, December 2nd, Project Graduation
hosted a Fazoli’s Dinner in the commons to help
raise funds for project graduation.
The proceeds of the Fazoli’s Dinner went
toward this year’s graduating class. Another
fundraiser that was held to beneit project
graduation was the Chili Dinner, on January 7th.
“The Fazoli’s Dinner was very well
organized,” said Senior Chris Ditterline. “It was
a really cool way to help raise money for the
Senior class.”
The Fazoli’s Dinner was held in the commons
area during the Vienna Eagles boys’ basketball
game against Massac County. The dinner that
Fazoli’s brought consisted of fettuccini alfredo,
salad, bread sticks, spaghetti, McDonalds sweet
tea, and assorted deserts.
The Project Graduation committee has had
multiple meetings this year to discuss fundraisers for project graduation and to plan project

The Vienna Eagles basketball
team has kicked off another great
season.
The varsity coach is Mr. Cory
Waters. This is his second year as
varsity head coach. He is assisted
by Mr. Chris Holhubner.
JV coach is Mr. Sean Stram,
and the Freshman coach is Mr.
Bryan Waters.
The Eagles started off their
season playing in the Vienna
Turkey Tournament.
The Eagles really gave a
fantastic effort, but despite their
effort they ended up going 1-4 in the
tournament beating Johnston City,
and losing to Meridian, Eldorado,
Carrier Mills, and Century.
The team then traveled over
the Christmas break to play in the
Sesser Valier Holiday Tournament.
The Eagles opening round game
was against Chester, and although
they fought hard, they came away
with the loss.
Their second game was against
Shawnee. The boys played their
best game of the tournament and
got the win.
In the last game, of the
tournament, the Eagles took on
Christopher. Despite their efforts
the Eagles were not able to come
away with the win, and ended up
1-2 in the tournament.
Senior basketball player, Ethan
Haney, commented, “I am enjoying
playing basketball this year, and am
really hoping that our hard work
will pay off and we will get some
wins under our belt.”
The boys have more games
ahead of them and plan to put their
nose to the grindstone and try to
improve their record.
The boys hope to get a good
seeding in the regional tournament,
and to win the tournament on their
home court.

Girls Basketball team flying like Eagles
Article by Jacob McGill
The Lady Eagles basketball
team is really turning heads so far
this basketball season.
The Lady Eagles team had a
great outlook coming into their
season, having three returning
starters, Carley Childress, Brooke
Childress, and Kelly Fitzgerald.
After winning the Marion
Invitational tournament, the Lady
Eagles focused their attention to
their conference games and the
Herrin Tournament.
The Lady Eagles played very
hard and beat their rival Blackcats,
and got two conference wins
against the Hamilton County Foxes
and the Fairield Mules.
The Lady Eagles went into the
Herrin Christmas tournament with
a record of 11-1.They really played
hard and won 3 out of 5 games in
the tournament.
First place came down to a
three way tie, and the team with the
best free-throw percentage over the
tournament would win.
Despite the effort, the Lady
Eagles received third place in the
tournament.
Senior baller Kelly Fitzgerald
commented, “We work really well
together as a team and are capable
of having a very successful season.
I’m so glad to be a part of this team
and we will continue to work really
hard.”
The Lady Eagles are off to a
bang, and hopefully they will get to
bring home a irst place trophy in
the State tournament.

Homecoming battles begin
Article by Tori Page
Isaac Rogers

Seniors
VHS students are back at their battle stations as the Homecoming competition heats up. We asked three students from each
class to give their opinion why they believe their class should be crowned the Champions of VHS Homecoming Week 2011-2012.
Make your words be heard, classes of VHS!
Kassey McDonald
Dominick Tedeschi
First of all, I don’t like to fight. But when
it comes down to this, I’m all for it. We’re
gonna own the Seniors, dominate the
Sophomores, and Freshmen, please, there’s
no need to even say anything about them.
Christian Dahncke
Assiah Mercer
Sophomores are for sure going to dominate
this year! Freshmen, Juniors, and Seniors:
you ALL are going down! Yeah, Seniors think
they’ve got this, but Sophomores are gonna
prove em’ wrong! Let’s go Sophomores!
We are going to tear some stuff
up in the lip syncs and kill the
seniors!!! So yeah, that’s what’s
going to happen this year during
homecoming week!!!
Well, the Juniors are going to fail at lip
Austin Krelo
syncs, and all in all, the Freshmen will
completely crush all of the other classes! Our Freshman class is going to beat everybody
Seniors, Juniors, and Sophomores better this year, especially the Senior class! We’re
gonna win! Take that, Clayton Wright!
prepare themselves!
Well for starters, the Juniors are terrible when
it comes to Homecoming week. The Freshmen,
well, they’re Freshmen and are going to be
awful. Our only competition is the Seniors but
I’m pretty conident that the Sophomores will
come out on top with a win.
Meighan Smith
Paige McKibben
Everyone knows that the Sophomores are the
best! We were cheated out last year and we
plan on total domination this year. If we had an
animal to best represent us, there wouldn’t be
one. We’re a mix of a vicious lion and a cougar,
also known as a “lougar”. So Seniors...IT’S ON
LIKE DONKEY KONG.
Freshmen
Cady Ross
Cory Painter
Sophomores
I’m a lot like Gandhi, but the gloves are
off this year. Two years of last place is
not fun! We’re coming after Sophomores
and Seniors this year. We are definitely
going to rain on their parade. Freshmen
have no idea what’s coming to em’.
Juniors are the darkhorses and we’re
gonna win!
You know, All Of You Guys should be used
to losing. Because we’ve Beaten you all
every year, and this year the seniors will
win once again!
Alex Ross
Juniors
Just a fair warning, but anyone who isn’t
a senior, prepare to be curb-stomped! To each class that thinks they have a chance
The Seniors are the reigning champs and at lip syncs...they tell you to “dream Big”...
we’re not looking to change that. be impossible. sorry to hurt your feelings, but
prepared to get crushed like usual. Oh, i don’t want anyone getting their hopes up. :)
and freshmen...good luck. You’ll need it.
Sophomores think they are going to win, but
it’s just all in their heads just like last year!
Seniors, don’t let
the Championship title
get to your head, and Juniors, just forget it!
Freshmen are going to dominate this year!

VHS Beta members donate in memory of Cristina Botello
Article by Isaac Rogers
As one of the many Beta Club
service projects, the club oficers
decided to ask the Betas to donate
hardback children’s books to
Vienna Grade School in memory
of Cristina Botello. The Betas
drew an “In memory of Cristina
Botello” tag inside the cover of the
book before they were distributed
to the grade school. Mr. Frehner,
VGS superintendent, was very
appreciative of the Betas efforts.
“Donating the books to the VGS
library is a great way for future
Vienna Grade School students to
know of Cristina,” Mr. Frehner
stated. Beta member Jami Shipley
expressed the importance of the
service project, “I think this service
project exempliies what Beta is
about, giving back to the community
and making a difference for those
around you,” Jami said.
Thanks to all the Betas who
participated in this project and
donated books for the cause.
Senior Betas Tyler Harner and Kari Robertson presented to Mr. Frehner, the books

VHS were treated with a special
guest speaker.
Hilary Wright visited these
classes to teach the students about
Photoshop and some of the things
that you can do with it. Hilary is
a graduate of the VHS class of
2009 and was the 2007-2009 Talon
Editor as well.
Hilary is currently a Senior at
Greenville College and is majoring
in Digital Media with an emphasis

Hilary’s lesson.“I felt like I learned
alot after Hilary taught her lesson.
She taught us how to do a lot of
new things that will be useful when
working with photos in the future.”
Hilary expressed the beneit
of being on the Talon staff while
attending VHS, “Being in the
Talon class taught me how to work
with a team to produce a product
for the public. It also taught me
about practical design and layout
application.”
The students would like to thank
Hilary for sharing her knowledge

N ew Ye ar ’ s Eve in t he Big A ppl e
Article by Peyton Smith
Never in my life would I have
thought that I would be able to go
to New York City. Especially for
New Years Eve! I didn’t even know
how to go about asking my parents.
As I blurted out my question, my
father just laughed. Mom thought
it would be a great opportunity but
was worried about one thing....terrorists. After discussing the situation and iguring out that we could
come up with the money, I inally
got the ok I had been waiting for.
I was privileged enough to be
able to travel to New York City to
attend the biggest party in the country to celebrate the new year. Three
of my friends and I drove 20 hours
away from home on December 28th
and stayed at a Holiday Inn in Fort
Lee, New Jersey. We toured NY
City as much as possible, which
included going up the Empire State
Building, going through Grand
Central Station, and walking across
the Brooklyn Bridge.
On the big day we were excited
and anxious to get a good spot to
watch the ball drop at midnight.
We made our way down to Time
Square by 10 AM and found a spot
where we would stand for 14 hours,
Peyton Smith (center) surrounded by friends that travelled to New York City to
celebrate New Year’s Eve.
all without eating and without using the restroom. Although we
had all this time on our hands, the
time spent with friends made it go
by a whole lot faster. The laughter
was unending. We were fortunate
enough to meet some wonderful
people from Texas, Nick and his
wife Jenna. It was also their irst
time celebrating New Years Eve in
New York City.
Many very famous people performed, including, Drake, Justin
Beiber, Lady Gaga, and Pitbull.
Throughout the night there were
multiple countdowns, all of which
represented another country bringing in their new year. We were surrounded by many different ethnicities and languages, something we
are not used to in Southern Illinois.
The last 30 minutes seemed to
be the longest of the entire day! We
were tired, cold, hungry, but most
of all antsy. When the countdown
began the people could hardly contain their excitement. As Cee Lo
Green sang “Imagine” and the mir-

midnight.
ror ball was reaching the bottom,
there was a mesmerizing calm as
1.5 million people were focused on
the very same thing. It was very
overwhelming and an awe-inspiring moment. As the new year rang
in, confetti shot, couples kissed,
and cameras lashed. What started
out as a dream between friends, became an epic highlight in all of our
lives that we will never forget.

Tired of wasing your ime watching movies that end up in disappointment, or missing the movies that are a lot beter than you expected? Well lucky for you, I’m
here to give you the heads up on the newest movies and whether they are Great or Garbage, movie edition.
New Year’s Eve
The Muppets
Jack and Jill
If you have seen and enjoyed
the movie Valentine’s Day, then
you’re in for a treat when you
watch New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Eve
is a comedy/heart warmer/romance
ilm set in New York City. With such
a large cast of famous actors and
actresses, including Ashton Kutcher,
Halle Berry, and Jon Bon Jovi, New
Year’s Eve is a killer production. I
strongly urge you to watch this ilm!
Sherlock Holmes 2
If you have ever seen the irst
Sherlock Holmes you were more than
likely excited to see the sequel. However,
you were probably very disappointed.
The story line to this movie is extremely
vapid and a lot of the intended “funny
parts” were extreme failures. Sherlock
Holmes 2 is the perfect movie to see if your
looking to take a nap. Take my advice, or,
if you prefer head to the movies to see
Sherlock Holmes 2.
Normal movies starring Adam
Sandler are hilarious, but in this comedy
Adam Sandler plays not one, but TWO
roles, so the comedy level is twice as
good! Adam Sandler plays a set of twins,
with a sister thats unbearably crazy! The
comedy Gods have deinitely hit the
mark with this one. I strongly suggest
you make your way to see this movie, if
you’re interested in awesome comedies.
I more than likely do
not have to tell you, but
The Muppets was one of
the worst movies I have ever
seen in my entire life! With the
worst graphics ever and the same
storyline that is in every Muppets
movie, I really had the urge to just
walk out. Instead, I caught up on
my reading a little bit. Don’t waste
your time.
Chimpanzee (Coming Soon)
Chipwrecked
Have you ever seen the movie
March of the Penguins? If so, that’s
exactly what you should expect when
this movie comes out. Chimpanzee is
going to be a documentary about a day
in the life of a monkey. Exactly what
you want to pay 9 bucks to see, right?
I didn’t think so. So spend your money
on something a little more entertaining.
Like a bouncy ball.
Alvin, the Chipmunks and
the Chipettes ind themselves in
a sticky situation when they are
stranded on an island! Like the
two previous movies, Alvin and
the gang sing hit songs such as
“Survivor” by Destiny’s Child,
and “Bad Romance” by Lady
Gaga. Not only is it a great kid
movie, it’s also an awesome movie
for teenagers to watch.
