I reckon that’s the fastest one on record I have ever been to. Thanks to the fellow committee men who put their hands up again and to the newbies who took over. Welcome to the committee to you guys. I would personally like to thank the guys I have worked with this year for all the great work and time they have put into running such an awesome club. Cheers fellas!!!! Thanks also to George for running the official side of things. I’m looking forward to the 2008/09 season, staying “Laidback” and making sure we are all “taking it easy” and enjoying sharing surfing as the sport, art form or spiritual activity we all love. June almost didn’t even start, with a lot of Laybackers looking to calling it off and head back to bed. But those that soldiered on and braved the weather (which stayed rain-free until the BBQ) were treated to some small, but fun ridable waves at good ol’ faithful Bellambi. One member who was more stoked than anyone to surf that day was our good mate Dave Milnes. 68 years old, a heart bypass, and a stroke didn’t stop him from knocking (a very hung-over) me off in the first round. Good on ya Dave. I heard about it for the rest of the day, week, month…. But never forget people that George beat Scotty at Cresent one year in the Aussie Old Mal Titles… (Sorry dig but im not letting people forget Georges glory, good old Terry hahah). That’s about all I remember from the day because I spent the rest of it asleep in my car, but I did hear that the rest of the day ran smoothly with the help of Andrew Wilson tallying and Head Judging and Hendo lending a hand aswell. Thanks guys for your help. Next year the season might need to kick off with some penalties for guys not judging when they are called. So remember, it’s two heats before you surf. Get down there when the light is flashing, don’t wait ‘til the hooter goes, or you could lose some points. The reason why the vibe on the beach was so great was that the club pulled together and made it a really fun day to run. Many compliments were given about the comp and i just wanted to say thanks to everyone who chipped in. From 5:30am we had something like 25 blokes on the point setting up tents, tables, chairs, flags, sirens, food, etc and even had time to kill before the first heats went in the water. Awesome!!! The guys that worked the food tent all day cooking, serving and selling raffle tickets did such a phenomenal job. A big days work!! If you keep people fed with good food and great coffee at a comp everyone is happy and comes back for more. Awesome!!! The guys that worked in the sign on tent for early registration, handing out shirts, wax, selling raffle tix, doing give away’s, playing music, calling judges/heats and working the microphone all day also made us a motza and helped create the happy, friendly vibe of the day. Awesome!!! And our Head Judge, Pete Sainsbury and Tallier Steve Pinnington kept the official side of things on track all day. Also thank you to the committee for all their hard work behind the scenes long before the day of the comp. Congratulations Nic on a fantastic year surfing mate! We surf a lot together and I am proud to hand it over to you after a great season. Better keep our eye on The Pugz next year, I reckon I’ll put a few bucks on him with Hendo’s Surfbet to give us a run at the top. Congratulations to our grommets on one of the biggest fields I have seen on a long time. A huge effort by Sub-Grom Georgia Henderson to take out the younger Sub-Grom Trophey and some fantastic surfing by Fabian West this year, taking out the Grommets division and Most Improved Surfer of the year. Well done mate and we are all looking forward to surfing against both yourself and Kyle Matriensen in the Opens next year. Good to see you both stepping up boys, it will really improve your surfing. I had good fortune on my side in the Old Mal this year, closely followed by the style master Billy Morris. As I said on the night, I just love surfing old boards and it really is a pleasure to share a few waves each month with the guys in this division. We have one of the strongest Old Mal clans in the state and it’s great to ‘keep the old girls wet!’ as we like to say. Layback Classic 2008. Most people on the club email list have already been sent an email about the success of this year’s Layback Classic. The overwhelming input from club members to help set-up and pack up as well as work the food tent and sign tent all day was phenomenal! Thanks again to Andrew Wilson and Shaun for their super job on the microphone all day, and running the give-aways. Another huge effort by Rob and June Armstrong on the catering and also by Kurt and all the boys who cooked on the day. The club raised $1500 which was presented to Camp Quality at the presentation that day. I personally think that if we can make a difference, using the money we raise as a club, then we succeeded this day. Well done to all members who dug deep and sold raffle tickets. Your efforts will go a long way in helping somebody is not as well off as we are. Great work Laybackers! The Season Ahead So bring on 2008/09 I say. Good luck to everyone. I hope you improve on your placings in each grade from this year and continue the high standard of surfing that this club is currently showing. Remember surfing is about the feeling we all get riding waves. It great to compete, so be competitive, but as long as we are all smiling, sharing waves and enjoying the ocean, surfing in the Illawarra is in great hands. Finally, a calendar of events and all pointscore dates will be coming in the next newsletter. Make sure you grab a Membership Renewal Form at the next Pointscore and all forms and money are due by the start of the October Pointscore!!! (or else you don’t surf in October) See you bright and early in August! hang ten, jn. NICK FARAGO LAYBACKERS CONTEST NEWS STATE TITLES REPORT COFFS HARBOUR Laybackers Flying the flag for the state titles this year were Scotty Downing over 40’s, Glenn Moore Over 40’s & 8ft division, Andrew Farago 45’s with Nick Farago and Dane Pioli contesting in the Opens & Damo Farago in the 18’s. We all headed up to Coff’s in the Farago van for an epic week of competing against NSW best surfers. First stop was McDonalds of course because someone was hungry???. It was a classic dash up the freeway watching surfing movies to inspire us for the week ahead. A quick Surf on the way up was the call and we piled out off the van at Scotts Head with a nice 3 ft plus swell rolling through which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Out of the van at Coffs harbour and were greeted by our house mate and technical director Phill Baggs. Beds were sorted and the beers flowed. Time for bed through on the Aussie flag boxers walked out to the kitchen and there’s Scotty in the same pair. Everyones up at the crack off dawn because Scottys crack was playing tunes and woke the whole house I joined in with a few tunes myself but it was no competi- tion he won hands down. Apparently I did win the snoring competition with plenty of whining from the crew mostly from Scotty who told me I’m NTA (never touring again) but I reckon its bullshit I heard nothing. Day 1 and we head off down to Diggers beach and were greeted to a washing machine easily 6ft plus and not very inviting. The call was Park Beach and we were greeted to cleaner condition but still way overhead and impossible to paddle out from the judging area so a 200 meter run up the beach and a ten minute paddle out time. Laybackers are off to a flying start with all crew in the age division getting good results for there first heats If you got three waves you were doing good. Day 2 pretty much the same conditions. We left park beach and Scotty judging for a trip up to Arrawarra for a surf. Magic place and condition with nice 3-5ft swell running all the way through to the boat ramp. We surfed for hours sat back had a few beers in the sun and took in the pleasure of it all. We got back and like everyone else told Bagsy that we should move the comp to Arrawara. By Wednesday Bagsy was gonna kill someone. Back home for dinner and pugs is cooking a PARK BEACH BOMBS cont feast of Nachos. Homer Fraser is invited over for a feed and a few beers and Pugs rings the bell for dinner. Nacho’s Pugs style is amazing you have to see it to believe it! Its huge I could have made 4 dinners off my own plate alone! Not being a big cheese lover I carefully lifted what must have been half a bag of cheese of the top of my nacho’s. I ate the remaining contents which was great. Good to see that Pugs can look after himself in the kitchen and doubt that he would ever go hungry having that culinary knowledge. Homer left satisfied and blocked for days!. The surfing continued and we were all doing well Andrew was the first to bow out in the rep semis whilst Scotty and Glenn continued to progress with Glenn needing a 1 or 2nd to make the finals I ended up coming third 5th overall but gets me to the Aussies I’m thoroughly stoked after trying for years. Scotty made the finals only to were the yellow jersey and nearly having to do a nude run in the peanut gallery as he couldn’t buy a wave until 5 minutes to go in a 30 minute final the crowd erupted and the pressure was off he brought home the 4th place trophy. Continuing on through the week and its the opens, juniors and 8 footers turn to compete and size still hanging around the heats were hot Nick surfed great although puts himself under to much pressure worrying about other surfers mate your good enough stop stressing. Pugs was on fire all week burning everyone in there heats and whilst free surfing too. On the back from Arrawarra we stopped in at the legend surf museum with Scotty Dillon welcoming us as long as we had 5 bucks each on us and that’s were it started. Pugs went straight through the back room and Scotty Dillon asking Nick if he’s going to pay for the bloke who ate his lunch! For an hour and a half Pugs and Scotty Dillon were at each other in good spirt of course .It was a great afternoon checkin out some old relics that scotty had collected over the years. Make it one of your stops on the way up the coast its well worth 5 bucks. Back home and its BBQ night at home meat and salads organized and its time to gas up the BBQ and gas it up scotty did hearing a hissing sound we checked the bottle and hose only to find that a burner was left open upon realizing this out of the corner of my eye I saw Andrew Farago ‘s thumb press the ignition button and Kaaabooom I shot back nearly going through the brickwork. Flames hitting the ceiling and killer escaping less a few nostril hairs, Yes plenty off laughter after that Not trusting anybody now I let Scotty the brave firey kick it over again with gas on and thousand clicks on the ignition while in a get ready THAT’S SCOTT IN YELLOW LEGENDS MUSEUM to run stance and that bbq refuses to ignite. Finally it’s a manual job with the lighter and were cooking. It would have been the best funniest home video ever. With the week coming to an end Nick didn’t make the finals but secured a place in the Aussies while Pugs took home a trophy in the finals 4th for the juniors and surfed very well all week in his heats. Killer made the 8ft finals jagging a sixth place on a borrowed board from Dave Frazer in turn for some Photoshop lessons (Thanks Dave). Having some surf down time I decided to do some shadow judging with the pro’s for a day and its a real eye opener not just for your judging but also to improve your surfing just that one day made me aware of some of the mistakes I was making in judging and surfing I appreciate what I soaked in from the day and advise anybody to have a go if given the chance to do it at that level just rock up and ask. It was a great week away and looking forward to the Aussies with all the Layback boys again in August in Port Macquarie. Wish us all good luck. Glenn Killer Casey Jones Moore LAYBACK PRESO NIGHT Presentation Night For this year’s Presentation night we finally found a room the perfect size to fit everyone in. Surfing is about the clan, being part of something that we all feel special about. Judging by the roll up at this year’s Preso it is obvious that our Layback clan, or big surfing family is as strong as ever!! So we had the perfect size room and still ran outta chairs hahaha. This, unfortunately, being due to people not booking their tickets early on. There was at least two months to RSVP and still people were calling the week of. Just so we have it all sweet next for next year’s Preso we will be pre-selling tickets and there is will be a cut-off date for ticket purchases. This will make it easier to cater for too! But all Laybackers that attended with their wives and families had a great time up at the Palm Court, while listening to ‘Flash’ ripping on guitar (with some awesome assistance from Hughesy on Bass and Scotty on Harmonica I must say). Thanks a million to Pete Scrine who bought his laptop up at the last minute so we could watch some awesome old surf movies from the 70’s and to Batesy who provided the footage of the classic for the big screen. Hendo lead us through the evening and with a decade of experience on the microphone he did another fantastic job. Thanks for all your help mate and to Shaun, Greeny and Rob for all your help organizing and running the night. It’s been a great committee effort this year and I sincerely appreciate all the effort the committee members put in to make this club such a success. The Mal Awards are the fun part of the evening where we see just how much of a sense of humour we all have about the funny things that go on throughout the season. This year’s winners I am sure will hold these trophies in high esteem and keep them on display for all friends and family to see and ask “What the **** is that ugly thing….?” Hahahah I know that’s what they said when they have ended up at my house. Congrats to these winners: Shane Irvine (Cooks Award), Scotty (The Loiterer), Dan Oaten (The Snake Award), Dave Clements (The Drop-In Award), Gary West – not Dave(Judges Award), Andy Goldie (The Wipe-Out Award). We also had some 10 year members this year in Simmo and Kev Napper. I was humbled to give my old man the Surfers Surfer Award too this year. If it wasn’t for his enjoyment of riding waves then my surfing would not be where it is today. And our Club-Man of the year Bazza was lost for words for the first time ever when asked to give a speech. Good on Bazz, you are a legend! The Presidents Encourage Award was given to our first ever club President George Kennedy, who had some very kind words to say about the current shape of the Layback club. How’s the guitar you won at the classic going George? Can’t wait to rock out with you at Tabourie next year mate! Thanks again to everyone involved in the organization and to all those that attended and had a great time. It’s awesome to get together and have a few beers and talk about the year that was. And what a year it was! Can’t wait to see how this coming season is gonna pan out!!! Sing like you are in the shower Dance like nobody is watching Surf with your favourite Jimi Hendrix song in your head Keep the sand between your toes Hello all in the Gong, Firstly, I have just been reading your last copy of the Laybacker No 16 Issue 8, as an avid reader and subscriber to Pacific Longboarder I really look forward to getting updates from home (via the hyperlink), yes I said home, having been born in Wollongong Hospital and growing up in Pioneer Road, Bellambi I spent all my formative years surfing the point. Some fantastic memories that have been etched permanently in the brain vault. I have been residing on the Gold Coast now for the past twenty years, surfing the point breaks from Currumbin to Snapper and the Tweed Coast (with now unbelievable crowd numbers) but my favourite surfing period so far were the days I spent surfing Bellambi Point. Seeing photo’s of all the point scores from your newsletter is a highlight. The point was a lot different in my day, riding my pushy with long board on a homemade bike trailer through the old rifle range down dirt roads to the point with the old coal jetty and boat sheds along the bay to where the boat ramp now exists. I have looked at the name list on your point scores from previous issues and there a quite a few names that I remember surfing with from those halcyon days. I don’t get back to the Gong that often but still have family at Woonona and Towradgi, so next time I do get down your way, it will be with my McTavish Fireball under my arm and hopefully sharing some waves. Now that I have had my little reminisce I will sign off saying, thank you for the great work you and your team is doing, awaiting your next update.
