March 1 - Riana Primary School
Newsletter, March 1, 2016 Dear Parents and Community Members: Athletic Carnival Our 2016 Athletic Carnival is on this Friday 4th March. It’s shaping up to be a good one with a terrific team of sports leaders planned and ready to go. They will be wearing special bibs this year, so if your child needs support you know who to ask. The program, which is in this newsletter, is a guide. We may have to adjust it for time and weather but we’ll do our best. Please make sure children have: Sun safe school hats Lots to eat and drink even if they are having a barbecue lunch Personal sunscreen if needed A warm coat Old stockings for the three legged race would be great Teddy Bears for Kinder and Prep children for the Teddy Bear race We focus on participation and being a good sport, so please let children know we just want them to give it their best shot and have fun. Points are awarded for participation so children are helping their House every time they join in. Riana Primary School, Department of Education Woolworths Earn and Learn Program Thanks to all parents, carers and extended families who took part in Woolworths ‘Earn and Learn’ promotion last year. Our order has arrived and some items can be seen in the picture. The books are in sets of six and will be used for Guided Reading in the classroom. Home Reader Area We now have a new Home Reader area for students and families to use. All Home Reader levels are now located in the one area. Reading Certificates As part of our continued focus on Reading at Riana Primary School, we have a schoolwide Home Reading Certificate system. Children receive a certificate in assembly when they reach 25, 50, 75 and 150 nights of Home Reading. At 100 nights of Home Reading children will receive a Medal. At 200 nights of Home Reading children will receive a Medal. We hope this encourages participation in the Home Reading Program. Reading is a skill. The more you practise any skill the better you become. Our school will celebrate with a day of Random Acts of Kindness, a munch with a buddy morning tea, and special activities at lunch time. Bullying facts Approximately one in four Year 4 to Year 9 Australian students (27%) report being bullied every few weeks or more often (considered to be frequent) during the last term at school. Frequent school bullying was highest among Year 5 (32%) and Year 8 (29%) students. 83% of students who bully others online, also bully others offline. 84% of students who were bullied online were also bullied offline. Peers are present as onlookers in 87% of bullying interactions, and play a central role in the bullying process. Hurtful teasing was the most prevalent of all bullying behaviours experienced by students, followed by having hurtful lies told about them. Online bullying appears to be related to age (or access to technology), with older students more likely to engage in cyber bullying than younger students. Dear Parent and Friends of Grade 4/5/6. Thank you so much for all the offers of help this year. We are in the process of sorting out a roster for our helpers and will let you know as soon as possible. For those of you who are able to help occasionally, thank you and we’ll be in touch. If there is anyone who can’t come in to school but would like to help at home we have some ideas as well. Thanks for your support Grade 4/5/6 Dear Families, As you may have read in our newsletter, our school has become a LiFT school this year. LiFT stands for Learning in Families Together. This is an initiative of the State Government which aims for families to become more involved with their children’s learning at school to improve Literacy and Numeracy outcomes. We believe that children learn best when families, schools and communities work together. As we put this program into practise we hope to share a range of information, resources and ideas which will help you and your child learn together. At this stage we are thinking that Facebook would be a great tool to communicate information, but we realise not everyone has access to it. To make sure you can access this information we would like to know the best method of communicating with you. Can you please tick below which of the following you have access to and write your preferred communication method please? Olivia Bracken, LiFT Coordinator Family Name…………………………………………………………..
