JAMBO LADIES AND GENTLEMEN KARIBU MAURITIUS Mauritius is a fascinating , world- in –one island of paradise .Multicultural society– living in peaceful harmony. It lies off the south east coast of the African continent – 2040 KM 2 . Population : 1.29 million including Rodrigues Island . World Bank Doing Business survey 2015 :1st in Africa – 32 Global Index of Economic Freedom 2015 : 1st in Africa – 10 global Global Competitiveness Index 2015 : 1st in Africa -39 global Democracy Index 2014 : 1st in Africa -17 global Environmental Performance Index (EPI ) 2014: 3rd in Africa-56 global Gender Equality 2015 we are very bad and need to improve seriously : 23 rd in Africa -120 global out of 145 countries. However our President since june 2015 is a woman :Mrs Ameena Gurib-Fakim.Our Vice President is also a woman : Mrs Monique Bellepeau FOOD AND ALLIED GROUP MAURITIUS From the fattening of a few broiler chicken in 1966 , the Food and Allied group has considerably expanded over the last five decades to emerge into a widey diversified group :food-industry ,farming ,services ,commerce ,hotels and logistics. A pioneer in most sectors where it is involved , the group has grown in line with the country’s economic growth. When it entered the poultry sector in 1966 , under the name of FOOD AND ALLIED INDUSTRIES LTD ,the country was not yet independent .We acquired independence in march 1968 and we had then to stand on our own feet. By developing this sector , the Food and allied Group aimed at reducing the country’s dependance on food imports. In the 80’s , Food and Allied consolidated its agro-industrial foundation by engaging in the production of other foodstuffs such as flour, dairy products, fruit and vegetable canning. In the 90’s the group started to diversify its services and developed the freight services and is today engaged in IT , creative advertising and business hospitality. At the same time the group moved across the Indian Ocean to develop the poultry sector in Madagascar through Avitech. In december 2011 through an exercise of rebranding the company name Food and Allied Industries Ltd was changed to bear the name of AVIPRO CO LTD AVIPRO CO LTD MAURITIUS Our operation starts with Hubbard broiler Grand Parent stock imported from France and selected under tropical environment and integrates the parent stock ,hatchery ,broiler farms and ends with its modern processing plant up to European Standard. The breeding department consists of one quarantine farm , one breeding farm and a hatchery for the GP , three rearing farms and eight breeding farms for the broiler and layer parent stock and a modern hatchery with a capacity of 250000 chicks per week.We run seventeen broiler farms spread all over the island applying the principle of all in all out. Our slaughter house up to EU standard has a capacity of 6000 birds per hour. We export parent stock chicks to Madagascar , Kenya ,Tanzania , Uganda ,Zambia and Rwanda and extend our technical support and transfer of knowledge to our customers through regular visits twice per year . A control laboratory contributes significantly to the high standards of hygiene and sanitation at all levels of production and is equipped to perform serological ( Elisa ) and bacteriological tests.A full time veterinarian is attached to our laboratory and ensures that all biosecurity measures are implemented and monitors the health status of our flocks. AVIPRO BREAKING NEWS : IN 2016 WE ARE STARTING A BROILER GRAND PARENT FARM IN KENYA TO PRODUCE HUBBARD CLASSIC PARENT STOCK CHICKS FOR EXPORT AVIPRO EAST AFRICA IS BORN AVIPRO CO LTD MAURITIUS Strict biosecurity measures are applied on all the production sites which are isolated from residential areas , completely fenced and provided with bathrooms where all employees and visitors are compelled to shower and to wear boots and uniforms before getting access to the production units. Furthermore all the units of Avipro Co Ltd are ISO 9001-2008 certified and the processing plant is HACCP certified .The audits are carried out by an external agency namely Anglo Japanese American Registrars Limited ( A.J.A). AVIPRO JF Hamon Groupe Grimaud Société Hubbard & Novogen ROBERT SOUPE I joined Food and Allied Group in 1972 as a junior Farm Superintendant .Have completed 43 consecutive years of service on 1 december 2015. Studied at Barneveld College The Netherlands in 1976. I have been managing Broiler Grand Parent Stock , Broiler and Layer Parent Stock and hatchery for a number of years and also for few years Duck and Guinea Fowl Parent Stock. Last twenty years travelling regularly to Madagascar and East Africa to market and advise farmers about management of broiler breeders . AVIPRO CO LTD CHICK QUALITY PRESENTED BY ROBERT SOUPE Where does chick quality start ? Is it from the feed ? Is it in the Breeding farm ? THE HEALTH STATUS OF THE BREEDERS Is it in the hatchery ? AVIPRO CO LTD CHICK QUALITY HOW SHOULD A GOOD QUALITY CHICK LOOK LIKE ? Clean –dry- free from dirt and contamination Clear bright eyes free from deformties Dry and fluffy feathers With completely sealed and clean navel-no yolk sac or membrane should come out of the navel-black button Well developed legs that are soft and well hydrated when the toes are stretched. No swelling of the hocks and without redness. The beak should be well formed and straight. Alert and active AVIPRO CO LTD CHICK QUALITY FACTORS WHICH AFFECT CHICK QUALITY : Nutrition of the breeders The environment on the breeding farm HEALTH STATUS Handling storage and incubation of hatching eggs Transfer of chicks from hatchery to the farm BREEDER NUTRITION Protein and amino acids contents in the breeder diet and their ratio to energy content are important not only for parent performance and hatchability but also for chick quality .Whitehead et al. (1985) demonstrated that a high protein to enrgy ratio depresses reproductive performance and chick quality. All essential amino acids must be present in the diet to avoid deficiencies which will adversely impact on egg size , chick size and growth of the birds: Lysine , Methionine + Cystine ,Threonine and Tryptophan A recommended diet containing 2750 Kcal with 15 % TO 16 % CP is considered sufficient to meet the energy intake requirement of the female without an excessive amino-acid intake. BREEDER FEED INTAKE AT AVIPRO IN MAURITIUS AT PEAK WITH A RATION OF 16 % CP AND 2750 Kcal WE REGULARLY FEED 180 GMS ( BROILER BREEDERS ): 180 GMS = 28.8 g ( a bit on the high side) and 495 Kcal/DAY MY EXPERIENCE IN AFRICA WITH SMALL BREEDERS WHO MANUFACTURE THEIR OWN FEED :TO REACH A PEAK OF 80 % WE HAVE HAD TO GIVE UP TO 210 GMS OF FEED AT PEAK MOST LIKELY DUE TO THE LOW LEVEL OF ENERGY IN THE FEED WHICH CONTAINS MOSTLY MAIZE BRAN .FURTHERMORE THE QUALITY OF THE MAIZE BRAN VARIES GREATLY . FEEDING THE CORRECT AMOUNT IN SUCH CASES IS A MATTER OF EXPERIENCING AND DECIDING ALMOST ON A WEEKLY BASIS . BREEDER NUTRITION THE FATTY ACID COMPOSITION OF THE BREEDER DIET HAS BEEN SHOWN TO AFFECT THE FATTY ACID COMPOSITION OF THE EGG YOLK, WHICH IN TURN CAN AFFECT HATCHABILITY AND CHICK QUALITY.LINOLEIC AND ARCHIDONIC ACIDS ARE EXAMPLES OF OMEGA-6 FATTY ACIDS THE LIPIDS PRESENT IN THE YOLK PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE EMBRYO , SERVING AS A SOURCE OF ENERGY , FATTY ACIDS AND LIPID-SOLUBLE VITAMINS . FATS BLENDS CONTAINING VEGETABLE OIL ARE A GOOD SOURCE OF LINOLEIC ACID WHICH IF PRESENT AT MARGINAL LEVELS MAY REDUCE EGG SIZE AND CONSEQUENTLY CHICK SIZE. EG OF COTTON SEED CAKE : BAD EXPERIENCE IN THE PAST : GOSSYPOL IS A TOXIC FACTOR INDIGENOUS TO THE COTTON PLANT .WE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN DROP IN HATCHABILITY FROM 84 % DROPPING GRADUALLY TO 35 % ! IT TOOK US TWO WEEKS TO FIND OUT THAT THE CAUSE WAS A TOO HIGH INCORPORATION OF COTTON SEED CAKE IMPORTED FROM MADAGASCAR .THE CAKE CONTAINED HIGH LEVEL OF GOSSYPOL WHICH KILLED THE EMBRYOS AT THE EARLY EMBRYONIC DEVELOPMENT STAGE..AT HIGH DOSES GOSSYPOL CAN AS WELL CAUSE MALES TO BE INFERTILE..MALVALIC ACID PRESENT IN COTTON SEED OIL IS THE CAUSATIVE AGENT FOR THESE ABNORMALITIES . AVIPRO CO LTD CHICK QUALITY If the feed is deficient in macro and micro nutrients the quality of the chicks will be affected : Vitamin deficiencies ( A ,D, E ,B complex ) as well as lack of essential minerals ( calcium , phosphorus ,magnesium,Potassium,Manganese ,zinc ) will all have a negative bearing on the growth , bones ,and health of the chicks .It is important to ensure that the nutritional requirements of the breeders ,especially for vitamins ,are completely satisfied. BREEDER NUTRITION VITAMINS AND TRACE MINERALS ARE IMPORTANT NOT ONLY FOR BREEDER PERFORMANCE BUT ALSO FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PROGENY. DEFICIENCIES MAY AFFECT HATCHABILITY ,CHICK VIABILITY AND BROILER GROWTH. A MARKED DEFICIENCY OF ANY ONE VITAMIN IS KNOWN TO RESULT IN NEGATIVE RESPONSES IN PARENT EGG PRODUCTION ,FERTILITY , HATCHABILITY AND OFF SPRING PERFORMANCE AS THERE IS INCREASED EVIDENCE FOR IMPORTANT CARRY OVER EFFECTS TO CHICKS. AT THE BEGINNING OF PRODUCTION NUTRIENTS ARE NOT SO EFFICIENTLY TRANSFERRED TO THE EGG.IT IS A GOOD PRACTICE TO FEED EXTRA VITAMINS AT THIS STAGE TO THE BREEDERS.SAY FROM 24TH TO 28TH WEEK. BREEDER NUTRITION ANOTHER AREA OF CONCERN IS THE LOSS OF POTENCY OF VITAMINS WHICH OCCURS BETWEEN FEED MANUFACTURE AND CONSUMPTION BY THE BIRDS. CAUSES OF LOSS OF POTENCY ARE STORAGE TIME,STORAGE TEMPERATURE/HUMIDITY OF THE VITAMIN PREMIX BEFORE MIXING AND ALSO OF THE FEED CALCIUM , PHOSPHORUS,SODIUM,POTASSIUM,MAGNESIUM AND CHLORIDE ARE INVOLVED IN SHELL FORMATION.GOOD SHELL QUALITY LEADS TO BETTER EGGS AND CHICK QUALITY. HATCHING EGGS MUST HAVE A SOLID SHELL WITH NO HAIR CRACKS . LEG PEROSIS MANGANESE DEFICIENCY UGANDA RETARDED GROWTH UGANDA
