Just 5 minutes from downtown Saint Paul, Dayton’s Bluff is a historic neighborhood with
outstanding views of the skyline, the Mississippi River and even downtown Minneapolis.
Dayton’s Bluff is Saint Paul’s largest Historic District and includes homes that range from large
Victorians to small worker cottages. The Mounds Theatre, the main campus of Metropolitan
State University, wonderful coffee shops and restaurants, as well as three large parks: Indian
Mounds (with ancient burial mounds and caves), Swede Hollow, and Bruce Vento Nature
Sanctuary(all of which are connected by the Bruce Vento Regional Trail) are located in the
neighborhood. Dayton’s Bluff residents are actively involved in many community projects and
groups—documenting neighborhood history, developing walking tours, and beautifying and
planning for the future of the neighborhood.

Neighborhood Voices
I love Mounds Park's views of downtown and the Mississippi River and its proximity to such a
beautiful park - a long stretch or natural tranquility in the most urban of settings. The people
here are the best part, great neighbors that reach out to each other and create a unique fabric
of community that is dynamic and interesting and feels like an old-fashioned neighborhood with
a modern very urban twist.

History
In the 1850s, Lyman Dayton purchased 5,000 acres of land east of downtown Saint Paul on the
bluffs of the Mississippi River, giving the neighborhood its name. Development took off after the
city improved Seventh Street in the 1880s and 90s—first with cable car and then street car

connections to downtown. The Swede Hollow portion of the neighborhood was where many
immigrants from Sweden, Ireland, Italy and Mexico first settled. The neighborhood has a
wonderful mix of housing stock dating from the 1850’s and a rich history with businesses such
as Hamm’s Brewery, 3M, Seeger/Whirlpool, Paper Calmenson and many retail stores. For more

Housing Styles and Types
Dayton’s Bluff has houses dating from the 1850’s all the way to the present, with the largest
concentration of Victorian houses in Saint Paul. Other housing styles in Dayton’s Bluff include,
Italianate, side by side double houses, craftsman foursquare, Dutch Colonial, bungalow,
ramblers, split level, converted church. You name it, you can find it in Dayton’s Bluff.
