May 2016 INSIDE 1 From Fr. Tristan 2 May 22 Celebration 3 Branches Support Our Neighbors 4 Polly Betterly is 97 Message from Senior Warden Capital Campaign Prayer 5 From Fr. Tristan When I graduated with my Masters last Spring, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I felt this for a variety of reasons: because I had finished ahead of schedule (less debt), because I had proven something to myself, because there was a beginning and an end, etc. One thing that I learned that I hadn’t expected was that education will be a lifelong commitment. For me to be the person God has called me to be I must continue to learn about and explore my faith and all that goes with it. This is true for all of us. In these discussions we explored what expectations and hopes these parents had for their children in regards to Sunday School, Youth Group, the worship experience, and education. These conversations were both affirming of what is happening now and also exciting about what our future can be. You see, these parents had a vision for their children. They want for Christ Episcopal Church to be a place where their children could experience God’s love while also being a safe place to wrestle with how God was working in their daily lives. They want CEC to be a place that shared in the joys of their children’s lives while also comforting them in times of sadness. They also want CEC to be a place that supports them in raising their children. We shared our hopes and dreams about having the youth more involved in worship, in the various groups of the church, and also helping lead us in serving those in need in Red Wing and beyond. Each component of this vision began with education which was seen as foundation for a lifelong walk with our Lord. I believe a lifelong walk with God requires us to continue to grow and be challenged in our understanding of God. Often times, churches focus their energy and efforts regarding education on youth. While this is a great place to start it cannot be the end. Instead, we must offer opportunities for each of us to go deeper in our faith and to explore how our (Continued on page 2) Christ Episcopal Church 321 West Avenue, Red Wing, MN 651-388-0411 Bishop The Right Reverend Brian Prior Priest‐in‐Charge The Rev. For us to do this we need to offer more. However, what is more? Currently we offer four regular opportunities for adult education: our Sunday worship, the interactive discussion service on Wednesdays, Wednesday Bible study, and our Christian Conversations between services on Sunday. Is there more that you’d like to see offered? What would you like to learn about? These are very real questions with which our newly formed education committee is addressing. In June we will be surveying the membership in regards to education opportunities at CEC. Like these parents that we met with in April God has given you a vision about education at CEC, I pray that you’ll share it with us. Page 2 Christ Church—A faith community, alive in Christ May 2016 Branches – May 2016 Ways to Support Our Neighbors By The Rev. Barbara von Haaren OK, so I am not much of a baker! I can remember a time when my kids told me to not ever try baking a pie again – it was so bad. So a couple of days ago, I decided to make some oatmeal cookies – how hard can that be? I got out all the ingredients and put them on the counter top. Measured, mixed, pre-heated the oven, and finally scooped the thick batter carefully into little mounds on the cookie sheet. I placed the sheet into the oven, and began to clean up the mess I had made. As I was finishing that chore, I saw the bag Saturday, May 7, 2016 of flour, and suddenly realized that I had forgotten to add flour to the mixture! At that point I knew it was way too late to add anything to the already baking cookies, so I figured “OK, we will wait and just have to see what flour really does for cookies”. Well, let me tell you folks that flour is what holds everything together!! Support our members involved in this year’s musical by attending Annie at the Sheldon. May 12‐15th I stood in my kitchen and laughed until I had tears in my eyes! And, I had a very strong feeling that God was laughing, too. As I thought about it, maybe God needed a good laugh just as much as I did! When I think of all the atrocities, the shootings, the wars, the oppression, the horrors, the fear, the unknown, the lack of caring – it all seems overwhelming – maybe, just maybe, we all need to take some time and laugh at ourselves, laugh with each other, and laugh with God. Itʹs good for all of us! May 2016 Christ Church—A faith community, alive in Christ Page 3 Polly Betterly celebrated her 97th birthday with her great-great nephew. Happy birthday Polly! Message from your Senior Warden By John Blue On Sunday, April 10th, we had our Capital Campaign kickoff which ended the “silent phase” of the fundraising. There was a great catered brunch served with over 80 members in attendance. Bob Stark talked about the building projects, Sean Dowse talked about the funds that have been raised through major donors, and Phil McNairy talked about how everyone else can contribute to the campaign. At the time of the kickoff, the campaign had raised $521,000, and as of the end of April the campaign has raised $566,446. We are getting very close to meeting our goal of $730,000 and making Christ Episcopal Church accessible to everyone. In the next few weeks we will be getting firm bids on the work to be done and the new heating system. Hopefully by mid-summer work will be started with a completion date in late fall. If you have any questions about the construction, the new heating system or exterior repair of the parish hall, anyone on the building committee or vestry will be able to help you. Page 4 Christ Church Capital Campaign Prayer Holy One of the Universe, in your radical love for all of creation you bestow upon us blessings beyond measure and gifts of grace beyond our wildest imagining. As we commit ourselves to the Capital Campaign and the task of raising funds for the enhancement of our beautiful Christ Church buildings, help us to find within our hearts a love like yours. Daily remind us that we make this commitment not for our own glorification but for yours and that we do it from a place of deep caring for the members of our church family and all in the wider community to whom you would have us be witnesses of your love. Strengthen us now as you help us bring to fruition our dreams for Christ Church. With faith, we pray. AMEN. Christ Church—A faith community, alive in Christ May 2016 ECW Spring Dinner Come to hear Pat and Mike Martin talk about their adventures while in the Peace Corps Wednesday, May 18 Dinner is at 6 p.m. (Free will offering) All are welcome Thank you to the many members that helped make the banner for our Capital Campaign that is hanging in the church!! May 2016 Christ Church—A faith community, alive in Christ Page 5 Episcopal Relief & Development is supporting local church partners in Texas, Ecuador and Japan as they respond to recent disasters. Throughout, local churches are reaching out in their communities to assess needs and accompany people as they cope with the immediate aftermath of the emergency. In addition to pastoral care, churches are also providing temporary housing assistance and emergency supplies such as food, water, fuel and other sitespecific needs. In Texas, as much as 20 inches of rain fell overnight on April 17-18 in northern and northwestern parts of Harris County, affecting the city of Houston and surrounding areas. Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of emergency in Harris and eight other counties in response to this event, which has killed eight people, flooded more than 1,100 homes and caused upwards of $5 billion in damage. In this early stage of the response, the Episcopal Diocese of Texas will utilize Spiritual Care Teams to assess needs and identify vulnerable flood survivors who may benefit from help in applying for assistance and navigating their recovery process. Supported in part by Episcopal Relief & Development, the teams will be able to provide pastoral care and gift cards for immediate needs, as well as offer rent assistance for temporary housing in cases where people have evacuated from their homes and are unable to stay in a shelter. The teams are organized and equipped by The Ven. Russ Oechsel, Texas Archdeacon and longtime Diocesan Disaster Coordinator. “The Diocese of Texas, unfortunately, is very experienced in responding to disasters like these, having been through everything from Hurricane Ike in Galveston to the wildfires in Bastrop,” said Katie Mears, Director of Episcopal Relief & Development’s US Disaster Program. “The diocese brings so many gifts to this response: an experienced and highly capable diocesan disaster coordinator, a trained network of volunteers, a wealth of knowledge and relationships theyʹve developed in past disasters and a robust network of churches and ministries with excellent ties to the community. As always, we stand with our partners as they work through the response and recovery process, and we pray for them and their families and the communities they work in.ʺ In Ecuador, at least 570 people have died and 155 are reported missing following a 7.8-magnitude earthquake centered off the coast on April 16. Ecuador’s Risk Management Office says that more than 7,000 people are injured and 25,000 are taking refuge in emergency shelters. Meanwhile, strong aftershocks continue to rattle the country, hampering ongoing search and rescue efforts and prolonging the trauma of displacement and uncertainty. A state of emergency has been declared for 6 provinces, with access to impacted areas limited due to the destruction of roads and other infrastructure. The worst damage was reported in Pedernales, a coastal town of 55,000, which was declared a ʺdisaster zoneʺ. There is a strong Episcopal Church presence in communities affected by the earthquakes, and two in particular – San Esteban in the Cuba neighborhood of the city of Manta and San Jose in nearby 15 de Abril – are mobilizing a response to reach 300 families in the most hard-hit areas, with support from Episcopal Relief & Development through the Diocese of Litoral Ecuador (part of Province IX of The Episcopal Church). The most immediate needs are for food, water, clothing and other items such as mosquito nets and first aid supplies. Churches will also provide pastoral care and coordinate with government and civil society organizations to facilitate response efforts and bring to attention the needs of their communities. “I am very grateful to our partner churches in Ecuador who have immediately reached out to assess needs in their communities,” said Nagulan Nesiah, Episcopal Relief & Development’s Senior Program Officer for Disaster Response and Risk Reduction. “Vulnerability is an everyday experience for many, so the Church’s long-term connections and care in the community are incredibly valuable assets in times of disaster, when people could easily fall through the cracks.” Episcopal Relief & Development has also conveyed prayers and offered support to the Nippon Sei Ko Kai (NSKK, the Anglican Episcopal Church in Japan) following the earthquake in Kumamoto on April 16. The confirmed death toll stands at 45, with search and rescue operations still ongoing. Please pray for people impacted by these recent events, and for those who are providing urgently needed care and assistance. Want to help?
