District 26M-4 News September 2010
Home of District Governor Lion William Calhoon
======================================================================
“Thank you for buying me glasses. I can’t believe what a difference they have made in my life!”
“Thank you for the scholarship. It will help a lot when I go to school.”
These simple thank you’s mean a lot to me. I know that many of you have experienced similar
examples of appreciation from people whose lives you have touched.
One way to impact youth and fulfill President Scrugg’s “engaging youth campaign” is to take the
Peace Poster contest to a school in your area. This year’s theme is “A Vision of Peace.” You can order
the kit to get you started through the Lions website. The cost of the kit is $9.95 plus shipping and
handling. The contest is open to those students who will be 11 through 13 on Nov.15th, 2010. If you
have any questions, you can contact our district Peace Poster chairman, Greg Thompson, or myself
and we will be glad to help you. See Poster below:
I am continuing my club visits. Sadly, when I called the Rosendale Lions Club to schedule a visit,
I was told they were disbanding their club. It was hard news to hear since they had been a club since
1951. They still had 9 members but because of member’s health and different circumstances they
didn’t feel like they could continue. They were a great asset to their community and had spent
countless hours doing their fundraisers, namely, their delicious “fried chicken dinners.”
We must always be mindful of the fact that we need to recruit members. This is the only way to
insure that your club will continue to be able to serve your respective communities. I’m not saying
this is an easy thing to do. Be inventive. Set goals. Your existence as a club depends on it. Pass the
torch. Mentor someone. Let someone else have the opportunity to be a Lion. President Scrugg’s said
his proudest moments are not what he does, but what he teaches someone else to do. Showing
someone how they can make a difference is a rewarding experience.

Lion Shirley and I attended an officer training session held at Amazonia, Mo. PDG Ann Anderson,
IPDG Duane Clodfelter and PDG Gary Vogel were instructors. The feedback from those attending
was very positive. I know the other training classes held at Norborne and Hamilton have been very
well attended also. The last scheduled class will be held at Laredo. We owe a big thanks to all
involved in these training classes. Lion Ann commented that she knew everyone leads busy lives and
it was commendable that busy Lions take time out to learn about the offices they have been entrusted
to perform.
Just a reminder that each year the first Saturday in October is “We Serve Day.”
Until next time,
A roaring Lion,
District Governor Bill Calhoon

GREETINGS FROM YOUR 2ND VDG
Well, summer is drawing to a close but it has not been uneventful. August was a somewhat busy month for
club visitations. I personally accompanied DG Bill on 7 of them. I believe I missed one visit. It has been
fun getting out and meeting the officers and members of these various clubs. I look forward to the next
few months as we continue with these visits.
My own club, The Smithville Lions, participated in “Hot Summer Nights”, which is a concert in the square
series of events on the four Friday nights in August in Smithville. Each night has a different theme,
Emergency Vehicle Night, Back to School Night, Patriotic Night and Classic Car Night. The Lions Club set
up a taco stand and sold “Taco’s in a Bag” and bottled water. We were rained out two of the four nights
but we still feel that overall the events were successful. We will be having our annual Mum Sale Sept. 9th
thru the 11th.
September looks as though it will be even busier as DG Bill has many more visits planned. Hamilton Lions
Club has its 50th anniversary celebration on Sept. 11th, which we will be attending, and we will be attending
the USA/Canada Forum in Milwaukee, Wis. the forth weekend of the month. I will be reporting on that
event next month.
Thank you again for the opportunity to serve the district in this capacity and I look forward to meeting and
visiting with more of you in the near future.
Yours in Lionism
George Spengler, 2nd VDG

MLERF Giving Goals Set for Fiscal Year
“The office manager at my doctor’s office informed me that you fellows provided me the corneal tissue
at no cost. I extend a most heartfelt THANK YOU for your act of kindness, as I have no medical insurance.”
In 2010, Gregory R., a cornea transplant recipient, was one of the 27 Eye Care Assistance patients
served by the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation and Heartland Lions Eye Banks. Through the
program, we helped cover the costs of cataracts treatment, gratis corneal tissue and other eye care
procedures for those in need.
But that’s not who all we helped. Last year, thanks in part to donations from M-4 clubs, we saved more
than 42,000 individuals from vision loss through our free vision screenings and the Eye Bank, not to
mention the thousands of people worldwide who received free donated eyeglasses through our eyeglass
recycling program.
As the need for affordable vision care continues to rise, so does the need for funding. Therefore, Lion
Betty Cooksey, your M-4 Sight Committee representative, and the Foundation have set an M-4 district sight
fundraising goal of $18,000 for fiscal year 2010/2011. With your club’s commitment toward this goal, we
can continue to provide quality service to your friends and neighbors right here in Northwest Missouri.
Donations toward this year’s sight goal can be sent to the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation, 404
Portland Street, Columbia, MO 65201. If you have questions, please feel free to contact our development
department at 800-283-1982, ext. 115.
Thank you again to all the clubs in M-4 for your continued volunteerism and your dedication to fighting
blindness in Missouri and around the world.
