Monthly greetings to all our regular followers, and a warm welcome to first time readers.
I’m delighted to present to you another exciting edition of Santa Fe Korea’s Expat
News! As always, we have scoured the land (both physical and virtual) to bring to you
an edition that is jam-packed and full of informative content!
I hope that many of you had the chance recently to view some
of the beautiful cherry blossoms that blanketed the country with
their vibrant and pretty petals. It was truly a beautiful sight to
see, and a warming prelude of the Spring season to come.
In addition to the amazing change of scenery, another one of
the many blessings that come with seasonal changes is

suggestions on what to enjoy.

Seochon Village
Named in reference to its location west of Gyeongbokgung Palace,
Seochon Village comprises of several small houses that have an
added sense of modernity with some new buildings within while
Bukchon Hanok Village has a more magnificent and antique ambiance.
In the olden days, Seochon Village was home to many famous artists, and a favorite place for lovebirds holding hands while taking a
leisure stroll. Hanok houses have been remodeled into cafes or restaurants, and even galleries or museums that can be found in every
other alleyway. Besides, there are many attractions surrounding
Seochon Village that are fun to visit likewise.


Alleys in Seochon Village: Most of the things to see are
hidden in between alleys of the Seochon Village. Just like a
maze, not only are they fun to explore but there are also murals
and adorable pictures around that serve as great spots for photo taking.

House of Painter Lee Sang-bum: Designated as a Modern
Cultural Heritage, the house of painter Lee Sang-bum can be
found entirely intact as it was first established in Seochon Village. Take a trip to this house and you can experience the
space and typical traditional Korean lifestyle in the past.

N Seoul Tower
A romantic hotspot in Seoul for couples that should not be missed is
none other than the N Seoul Tower. Served as the filming location of
the drama ‘My Love from the Star (2014)’, this is where Cheong Song
-yi and Do Min-jun had made their promise of love and had the love
locks locked at the roof terrace, along with many other couples’.
N Seoul Tower has the best observatory to get a panoramic view of
Seoul. Visitors can get a bird’s eye view of the city in the day time,
and enjoy a romantic fantasy-alike ambiance of Seoul during
nighttime. Besides the observatory deck, there is also a museum, gift
shops and many things to see and enjoy at the N Seoul Tower.

Common Ground
Common Ground, located nearby Konkuk University, is a massive
and eye-catching architecture blanketed in a loud blue color. It is
Korea's first pop-up store built with shipping containers, made up of

Though Common Ground was only established last April, it had made its hit
through the social media world as the number of visitors exceeded a million in
just 100 days since its opening! Moreover, it served as the music video filming
location of some K-pop idols such as girl group SISTAR, and hip hop group
Dynamic Duo, and has since became a new landmark and hotspot among the
younger people.
TIP) How to enjoy Common Ground to the fullest!

Enjoy shopping with your loved ones: Shopping is definitely one of
the must-do when you visit the Common Ground! Unique and trendy small
brands, new designers’ shops, and editorial shops can all be found here.

Visit a café or restaurant with ambiance: Several unique interior designs can be found at the Common Ground. Enjoy a cup of coffee at a
café dine at a restaurant with a romantic ambiance together with your significant other.
Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP)
For couples who wish to take photos at a more unique setting in Korea, Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) will be a great place to visit.
Resembling almost like a spaceship, the asymmetry and atypical architecture is undoubtedly the key feature of this landmark.
Though the DDP is a large scaled building with 3 basement levels and
4 ground levels, it is interesting that one may not be able to distinguish
the levels from the outside. Moreover, the building is divided into four
segments namely ‘Art Hall', 'Museum', ‘Oullim Square’ and 'Design
Lab’, each offering something uniquely distinctive from one another.
TIP) Best spots for photo-taking at the DDP


Making use of unique exterior architecture: Take a photo
memento with the unique exterior of DDP as your background! Though any other corners can be equally impressive, taking photo in between the space of the rising curve
can bring out a whole new different vibe.
Making use of photo zones: There are various photo zones hidden all
over and within the DDP. Be it the gigantic figurine or panel photo
zone made with paper found inside the building, there are also several sculptures installed that serve as great photo props!

Naksan Park
Naksan Park, a park that is more amazing at night
than it is in the day! Known for the magnificent night
views from the peak, visitors can get a perfect bird’s
eye view of Seoul from the peak. In conjunction
with the soft and warm lights from the Naksan fortress, a romantic atmosphere can be enjoyed with
your significant other.
The promenade nearby Naksan Park allows visitors
to the park may choose to take a leisure stroll for
about 1-2 hours and several benches are also
mounted along the pathways for those who wish to
wish to take a short rest. Also, the popular Ihwa
Mural Village is also located in close proximity and
will be a great place to explore as well.
TIP) How to take the best photos at Naksan Park!

When taking photos of persons: Make use of the fortress walls and
have them in your pictures. Do not forget to have a space between the
both of you to show the flowers in the background as well!

When taking nightscapes: Focus the picture on the fortress with
the panorama of Seoul in the background to bring out a more sentiment
to the photo than just the night view of the cityscape itself.

Hunting down gently used gems in the shopaholic’s paradise

With its spotless, mega-sized department stores, sprawling clothes markets, and back streets choc-a-block with little
independent shops, Seoul is up there with the best in terms of being a go-to destination for a major shopping spree.
Myeong-dong, Dongdaemun, Apgujeong, Ewha and Hongdae — as well as countless smaller neighborhoods — offer a
seemingly limitless choice for anyone wanting to drop some serious cash.
But what about the options available for those of us looking for a more sustainable—and affordable—purchase? There
was a time when second-hand stores in Korea were a relatively rare sight, and once-weekly flea markets promised little
more than piles of incomplete jigsaw puzzles and dented shoes. Times are changing, however, and the city is now
home to a selection of fantastic options for places to scout out cheaper and eco-friendlier finds.
We’ve rounded a selection of the best second-hand stores and flea markets in the city, so you may need never again
buy new.
Beautiful Store

Beautiful Store is Korea’s leading chain of second-hand stores. Launched in 2002 with the mission of
“creating a world of sharing and circulation where everyone participates,” Beautiful Store now has over 120
stores in 16 cities across the peninsula. As well as reselling donated, used items, Beautiful store also featured products made by local artisans, and a range of ecofriendly, organic household and baby products.
The company coordinates a range of charitable activities and volunteering schemes, also offering priority job placements to the homeless and vulnerable.
The store organizes collections of second-hand furniture and household-item donations throughout the city, and accepts applications for store staff volunteers from anyone over the age of 18.

If you’ve a penchant for designer names but don’t want to fork out a fortune, then you must head over to
Smith Market. Located next to the Express Bus Terminal, and with all goods also on the website, Smith
Market allows you to, quite literally, take your pick from the little-worn designer purchases of the Gangnam
elite. Newly available items are updated on the website daily, with pieces from Alexander McQueen, Valentino and Vivienne Westwood selling for up to 90 percent off their original price.
Smith Market also buys designer clothes, shoes, and bags in good condition. The website is only in Korean, but non
Korean speakers may find it worth enlisting the help of a Korean-speaking friend. If you’re lucky enough to have feet
which fit into Korean sizes, you could bag yourself a pair of Jimmy Choos for as little as KRW 240,000.

Vin Prime

Looking for some vintage jeans, a jazzy tie or slouchy t-shirt to cut
the sleeves off for summer? Vin Prime will almost certainly have
what you’re looking for. Although slightly more expensive than
clothes you’d find in thrift stores back home, Vin Prime offers a very affordable
— and fun! — assortment of clothes, shoes, bags and accessories for those
looking to get their vintage on. Shirts are sold from KRW 3,000, with sweaters
averaging at the KRW 10,000 mark, and jeans from as little as KRW 15,000.
Vin Prime stores update their stock every day, meaning early morning visits (opening hours 10 AM-10 PM) are the best
time to scout a good-quality bargain. The website is in Korean but offers easy to follow directions to their eight locations
across Seoul.
Hwanghak-dong Flea Market

Open every day from 9 AM to 7 PM
Offering just about every miscellaneous knick-knack you can
imagine, the 500 vendors that make up Hwanghak-dong market next to Sindang Station might seem at first like an impenetrable maze of junk. Dig a little deeper amongst the overwhelming array
of stands, however, and you’ll find just about any item of clothing, accessory, or household or electrical item you might be searching for.
From bicycles to wigs, kitchenware, bags, jewelry and fishing gear—even
if you don’t come away with a treasure, browsing the piles of wares at one
of Seoul’s oldest trading centers for used goods is a great way to spend
an afternoon.
Aladin

Seven locations across Seoul
With seven branches throughout the city, including Sinchon, Jongno, Gangnam, Daehangno and Bundang, Aladin is a cave of wonders for the economical bookworm. You’ll find books in every genre: from cookbooks and self-help
books to classic novels, poetry, study books and even CDs and DVDs. Although the majority of the selection is in Korean, each store also includes a sizable English anthology,
offering an electric mix of fiction and non-fiction for a fraction of the price of regular
bookstores. You’re perhaps unlikely to have much luck sourcing a specific English book
here, but it’s an absolute treasure trove for those simply looking for their next few-dollar
read.
Students of Korean might also find Aladin worth a visit, as the English section almost always offers a large number of useful Korean language resources. Visitors may sell their
old books and CDs to the store, although the amount you’ll get in exchange will depend
on their condition and current demand.

Anseong enchants with rolling hills, steaming lakes and unbroken traditions

The sun slowly rises from behind the horizon and bathes the
rolling green meadow in a warm orange hue. The fields
begin to glisten, the morning light illuminating countless droplets of dew. The cacophony of the city is far away; here, the
only sounds are those of the wind rustling the trees and
grass, the frogs in the stream, the distant crowing of a rooster and the click of your camera’s shutter. You breathe the
fresh country air, take a sip of coffee and survey the endless
tranquility before you.
Anseong has a way of making you glad you woke up early.
Enchanting scenes of pastoral beauty may seem a world
away from the hustle and bustle of Seoul, but Anseong offers
sanctuary from the stress of modern urban life just an hour’s
bus ride from the city. This peaceful little corner of rural
Gyeonggi-do is the very picture of bucolic bliss, its undulating
grasslands, misty lakes and rustic farmhouses beloved by
photographers and cinematographers. In addition to its scenic charms, however, the town also boasts a proud cultural
heritage represented by the Namsadang, a performing troupe that is keeping the rich traditions of old Korea’s itinerant
entertainers alive.
Anseong is the very picture of bucolic bliss, its undulating
grasslands, misty lakes and rustic farmhouses beloved by
photographers and cinematographers.
Barley and rye
Just a 20-minute bus ride from “downtown” Anseong, Anseong
Farmland is one of the town’s most visited spots. Anseong Farmland was founded in 1969 as one of Korea’s first dairy farms.
West Germany provided technical and material support, including
the farm’s first 200 dairy cows. Over the years, the ranch served
as a testbed for Korea’s livestock industry. Since 2012, it has
functioned as a place where urban families can gain a deeper
understanding of animal husbandry through a variety of hands-on
programs. You can feed the sheep and goats, see the cows, pet
the rabbits, learn how cheese is made, enjoy a tractor ride and much, much more. There’s a horse-riding center, too,
with programs for newbies and experienced riders. Entry is KRW 8,000—21,000, depending on age and what you’d like
to do.
While many of Farmland’s programs are geared towards children,
it’s not without things for grown-up children to do and see. In particular, its rolling fields or rye and vast — for Korea, anyway —
meadows are popular with photographers and Instagram-savvy
day-trippers from Seoul, especially in spring, when the farm hosts
its “Rye Field and Meadow Festival” (through June 6).
The best time to see the fields is sunrise when the light is warm
and, atmosphere conditions permitting, a lovely mist covers the
meadow. To get there this early, however, you will need your own
set of wheels or take a taxi from downtown Anseong. Go to San
26, Unggyo-ri, Gongdo-eup, Anseong (안성시 공도읍 웅교리 산
26) , the address of the most popular sunrise photo spot. About
400 meters from the destination you’ll come to a pathway cars are
forbidden to enter — just get out and walk to the spot from there.

Smoke on the water
A popular local fishing spot, Gosam Reservoir gained unexpected
fame in 2000 when it featured as the backdrop of auteur Kim Kiduk’s controversial but internationally acclaimed film The Isle.
Say what you will about Kim and his disconcerting uses for
fishhooks, but the man does know how to pick beguiling locations. A dozen or so small fishing cottages float on the placid waters of the lake, the surface of which acts like a giant mirror reflecting the skies above. In the early morning hours, just before
and after sunrise, the water “boils” with mist and fog, creating a
surreal, bewitching landscape.
On most mornings, it’s a supremely relaxing place to put your new DSLR to work, although depending on the season,
weather and day of the week, you might have to compete with a photography club or two for a spot to put your tripod.
Of course, this isn’t a problem if you get there first.
Another scenic spot is Seoil Farm, where visitors can learn the art of making doenjang, or soybean paste, a vital ingredient in Korean cuisine. The farm offers a variety of hands-on “slow food” programs, and its full range of pastes, sauces
and other fermented foodstuffs are available for purchase. Its chief attraction, however, is the massive courtyards
where around 2,000 traditional clay fermentation jars are stored in neatly arranged rows—it’s truly a sight to see.
Traditional Spirit In the days of the Joseon Dynasty (1392—1910), troupes of itinerant entertainers, or namsadang,
traveled from village to village to entertain the locals with performances that featured singing, dancing instrumental music, mask dances, puppet plays and thrilling feats of acrobatics, including dish-spinning and tightrope-walking. Typically
held in the village square, these performances proved very popular with Joseon’s hardworking common people, who
had few opportunities to enjoy entertainment. Some parts of the performances, such as the mask dance, often included
satirical messages aimed at the kingdom’s political and social elite.
Wandering entertainers often came from society’s lowest rungs and were held in contempt by Joseon’s aristocrat class,
but this began to change in the 1850s when Anseong’s troupe was led by the Baudeogi, an exceptionally talented female performer who took over the group at the tender young age of 15, overcoming a long-standing tradition of selecting
only male leaders. She was such an outstanding leader and performer, in fact, that in 1865, the kingdom’s powerful
prince-regent, Heungseon Daewongun, invited her troupe to the royal capital to entertain the workers rebuilding the
iconic Gyeongbokgung Palace.
The namsadang faded as Korea industrialized and urbanized in the 20th century, but the traditions lives on in
Anseong. The newly opened Anseong Namsadang Concert Hall hosts regular performances every Saturday and
Sunday where the local troupe Baudeogi Pungmuldan
demonstrates all six surviving acts of the namsadang
repertoire. In autumn, the city also hosts the Anseong
Namsadang Baudeogi Festival, where the town celebrates its unique artistic heritage.
Anseong is also home to several beautiful Buddhist temples, mountain fortresses and Catholic holy sites, including Mirinae Holy Site, where Kim Dae-geon, Korea’s first
Catholic priest, and several other figures are buried.
Equally interesting is historic Anseong Catholic Church,
founded in 1901 by a French missionary priest who also introduced the grapes for which the town is now famous.
Blending Korean hanok and Western Gothic elements, the beautiful old church harmonizes East and West in a sublime
way.
Anseong Farmland has several restaurants, but if you’d like something with local color, try Anirok
(T.031-675-2486), a beef soup joint that has been in operation for 90 years, making it the oldest eatery in the province. Try the Anseong Matchum Utang, a bowl of soup with big joints of beef and other assorted hunks of cow.
Anseong is just an hour’s bus ride from Express Bus Terminal in Gangnam.

Three international takes on the humble pub

Whether you call it a gastropub, a tavern or a seonsuljip, every country has a name for
a comfortable place where food and drink are homey, hearty and high-quality. As Seoul
globalizes, these pubs have begun to pop up in ever-more exotic flavors. Below are
three of the most buzzed-about, each from its own corner of the globe.
Korean: Tricycle (세발자전거) Hapjeong-dong 합정동
Tricycle is a Korean gastropub located on the residential side of the quirky Hapjeong neighborhood. Its menu pairs deconstructed reinterpretations of Korean pub food with traditional alcohols like makgeolli and cheongju. While this may
seem like a story you’ve heard before, Tricycle distinguishes itself with the help of the powerhouses behind the scenes;
the owner is Korea’s most influential makgeolli power blogger, and the head of kitchen the country’s only TV-star chef
devoted to Korean cuisine.
While the newly renovated pairing pub still feels under development (we anticipate a few shifts in décor and atmosphere over the next few months), it’s worthwhile to stop by and sample the kitchen’s treasures before they become inaccessibly expensive or hard to reserve. One of the best is the prettily plated dakdortang. When it lands on the table, in
the form of sous-vide chicken rolls with artful puddles of potato gratin and gochujang, it’s not exactly recognizable as
Korean spicy chicken stew. But mix the ingredients together, and your tongue will know. It pairs perfectly with one of
the star of the makgeolli selection, a super-microbrew (only 150 bottles produced a day) called Boksoondoga. The
lovely handmade makgeolli’s creamy, mild sweetness induced this lightweight writer into somehow imbibing an entire
bottle — and yet waking up the next morning to neither hide nor hair of a hangover. It’s not clear whether it was the
food or drink that was the saving grace, but either way, strongly recommended!
Tricycle

French: L’impasse81 (랑빠스81) Donggyo-dong 동교동
The trendy Yeonnam neighborhood shows no signs of slowing in its constant debuts of Seoul’s next big food-and-drink
thing. The most recent of these is the French charcuterie L’impasse81, tucked into one of Yeonnam’s most hipster-yside streets.
Meaning “dead-end alley”, L’Impasse is a French pub whose pseudo-gritty décor, meaty menu and affordable wines fly
in the face of Seoul’s snooty stereotypes surrounding French cuisine. The concept is that of a bouchon, a type of nofrills tavern found exclusively in France’s culinary capital of Lyon. Centuries ago, bouchons serviced traveling silk merchants with humble food, drink and loggings when they passed through the city. Today, these Lyonnaise taverns continue to serve the charcuterie made of offal and other humble ingredients of times long past.
The sausages and cured meats handmade on-site by L’Impasse’s French and
French-educated owners are bravely authentic, stoutly sticking to the recipes of
home. The deep flavors of the pig-intestine andouille sausage, the spreadable
pates and rilettes and the spicy merguez lamb sausage can’t be found anywhere else in the country. That alone is a good reason to make the trip. The
opportunity for an evening spent filling up on these, and a bottle of wine, is even
better.

American: The Booth (더부스) Itaewon 이태원, Gangnam 강남 and elsewhere
Any American in Seoul will, at some point, tire of the pomp and circumstance (and pickles and
prices) surrounding food and drink from home, and just want something simple and good. When
they get to that point, they should head to The Booth.
This uber-casual craft beer pub was founded in 2013 by former Economist journo Daniel Tudor
and his team of partners. It opened its doors in Gyeongnidan scant months after Tudor reported
on the sad state of beer in Korea and decided to do something about it.
Serving only two kinds of craft beer and Hongdae’s most beloved 3 AM munchie, Monster Pizza,
the vibe mimicked that of your favorite college watering hole. It was an instant hit.
Since then, The Booth has opened its own microbrewery and expanded both its
beer menu and number of locations. (Monster Pizza is still the core of its food
menu, though some locations have added grilled cheese sandwiches and colorfully flavored kettle corn, too.) The brewers have also managed to score highprofile collaborations with international brewers Mikkeller and Øl, yielding tasty
brews like Taedonggang Pale Ale and Wit My Ex. Every Booth location serves a
different menu of drinks, so visit a few to try them all. Just be warned that, as casual and popular as it is, The Booth occasionally runs out of beer….Or
bread…..Or both.

Southern BBQ has taken off in a major way. Here’s where to start

Southern BBQ is no longer scarce in Seoul. Regional diehards and neophytes alike can settle down to a variety of
stunning, smoky meats and sides. Here, SEOUL rounds up three barbecue joints any true carnivore will appreciate.
Manimal Smokehouse (매니멀스모크하우스) Itaewon-dong 이태원동 Manimal emanates two of the planet’s
most enthralling smells: smoldering wood and expertly smoked meat. The sparse interior looks charred too with darkstained cement walls and metal and wood seating.
More beautiful browns and scorched blacks arrive with the reason for being here: the barbecue platter. Choose from
house-made andouille sausage, chicken, brisket (dinner-only) and pulled pork. A duo platter costs between KRW
35,000 and 38,000 depending on the meats selected. Outside of the platters, full and half racks of raspberry-glazed
ribs and a winter greens salad provide alternatives.
Manimal’s meats are so uniformly standout that no platter choice will be lamented. The andouille is spicy and enveloped in a delicious crisp skin. The smoked chicken and pulled pork are heavenly: purists and bbq neophytes alike will
rejoice. As for sides, Manimal’s are no slouches. Try the green chile mac and cheese and the chipotle lime potato salad. (Barbecue platters come with coleslaw, mashed potatoes and homemade rolls.)
Saving room for dessert is hardly an option when it comes to American barbecue. Will the space in your guts anyway
for the “Bananimal”, a riff on banana pudding with soft serve ice-cream, wafers, pudding sauce and fat banana slices.

Linus’ Bama Style BBQ (라이너스바비큐) Itaewon-dong 이태원동
This seminal bbq joint gave Seoul’s expats from America’s deep South something to write home about when it opened
its doors in 2014.
That aside, the barbecue at Linus’ Bama Style BBQ is not just for the homesick. Linus’ Itaewon space is packed nearly
every day of the week with eager diners from all walks of life communing over platters of buttery brisket and sumptuous
pulled pork. As the name of the place indicates, the bbq is full-on Alabama style, smoked “ low and slow” over hickory
and apple woods. The process yields meat that falls apart with the touch of a fork and is packed with rich, toasty flavor.
The bbq platters (KRW 31,000 for pork and brisket come with buttery rolls and choice of sides, as well as the Linus signature sauces, all of which hit the perfect balance of tangy, sweet and spicy. The sides at Linus continue to evolve, and
there are currently a number of deep fried appetizers and sides on offer including mac and cheese balls and a short
rack of ribs. The “Slaw in the Raw” adds a hit of sweetness to the DIY platter bbq rolls. The peppery pork and beans
and mellow bacon-and-egg potato salad are good way to round out and outstanding platter.
Wash everything down with a sweet, non-alcoholic “Crack Tea,” or spring for one of the signature cocktails.

Austin: The Smokehouse (오스틴) Sangsu-dong 상수동
American BBQ authentics may slight Austin: the Smokehouse, but diehard carnivores craving pulled pork, brisket and
ribs will not leave disappointed. There is a platter featuring kimchi and the coleslaw tastes of artificial sweetener, but the
brisket is buttery and the spare rips melt off the bone. It’s Texas-y but a little different, just like the city of Austin.
Austin’s menu features a two-person platter for KRW 28,900 that comes with brisket, pork, spare ribs and a choice of
two sides along with coleslaw and buttered rolls.
Single-meat platters vary in size (indicated by grams of meat), and run about KRW 20,000-24,000 each. Two table-side
sauces, dark and sweet, and a red chipotle complement the pork and the brisket, while the sweet and smoky ribs need
no embellishment. A side of chili beans delivers a serious kick of pepper, while the mashed potatoes and gravy are
bland enough to fight the former’s fire.
Other sides including onion rings, macaroni and cheese, sweet potato fries and potato salad can be added on to any
platter order for about KRW 3,000 a piece.
Refresh with an entertaining array of cocktails such as Coronaritas or opt for a craft or domestic beer.
The high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows don’t exactly scream Deep South, but the wood-paneled space is comfortable and inviting, permeated with the appetizing scent of smoke.

When people see the name of my company, Wine on Wednesday Korea, on my business card, most automatically assume that I am a wine importer. Although I drink
enough wine to keep a small-size wine importer in business, the fact of the matter is,
Wine on Wednesday Korea isn’t a company that focuses solely on wine. My business
is professional networking and after being nurtured over the past five years as an
event, usually held on the third or fourth Wednesday of the month, at which Seoul’s
international and Korean professionals can meet and expand their personal networks,
Wine on Wednesday has become one of the city’s most anticipated monthly social
gatherings. Wine on Wednesday is usually held at a hotel in Seoul, with the most recent one taking place at the Lotte Hotel’s Peninsula Bar and Lounge near Myeongdong. The event is business casual in nature and serves as a place where members of
the Seoul business community can meet and nurture potential business ties with each
other. As the scale and scope of international business based in Korea continues to
grow, the gap between Korean and international business people must shrink if new
value is to be created and the full potential which exists in Korea realized.
One of Wine on Wednesday’s biggest strengths is the diversity of its attendees, who represent some of the most successful international and Korean small, medium and large size companies in myriad business sectors.
