It is with profound appreciation
for his many years of loyal support and
leadership that the Magnolia Manor
family remembers Mr. John Gill who
served as a Trustee from April 1997
until his death on March 6, 2012.
An MBA graduate of The University
of Georgia, John served for many years
in the banking industry and will be
remembered as a highly respected
leader in business and surrounding
local communities. He served many
years on various local civic, community
and professional boards and was
a lifelong member of the Ellaville
United Methodist Church.
As the Vice Chairman of Magnolia
Manor’s Board of Trustees as well as
long-time Chairman of the Finance
Committee, John’s leadership helped
grow the ministry of Magnolia
Manor through campus and location
expansion. His generous support of
the League of the Good Samaritan
served as an example to others and
was just one of the many ways he gave
back to his community. Often he
could be seen delivering his donations
to our office in person; taking time
to speak kind words and offering
encouragement to our staff.
With his unassuming demeanor,
John was known as the most
compassionate, benevolent and kind
man one could ever hope to know.
He was the epitome of a true Southern
Gentleman and his presence in our
communities as well as his leadership
within our organization will be deeply
missed. John was truly a servant leader.
“May the example of how John
lived not be lost on anyone and serve
as a poignant reminder to each of
us that we should all strive to be
servant leaders and to be filled with
grace and compassion and to care for
others”, Mark Todd, President &
CEO, Magnolia Manor.
John is survived by his two children,
Elizabeth Walker Gill and John Paul
“Jack” Gill, Jr. of Americus and two
sisters, Paula Elizabeth Gill Williams
(Nelson) of Americus and Alice Coffin
Brown (Dr. W. Virgil) of Atlanta as well
as a number of nephews and cousins.

Did you know that March is
Social Work Month?
Magnolia Manor takes the
opportunity to honor our social
workers during the month of March
every year. This year a Social Worker
Fair was held on March 29, 2012 from
10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Nursing
Center in Americus. Eight vendors
participated in the event. Over 100
people attended including residents,
family members, employees, and
community members. They enjoyed
the educational tour of each vendor
as well as the refreshments and prizes.
This event helps inform everyone of
the services each vendor can offer and
how these local vendors assist our
Nursing Center by providing specific
services to Magnolia Manor residents.
R emembering Colonel Dick May
Colonel Dick May was a blessing
to Magnolia Manor South. Col. May
admired and believed in Magnolia
Manor South as a wonderful ministry
and encouraged people in the South
Georgia Conference to support
Magnolia Manor South. He served
on the Moultrie Advisory Board for
Magnolia Manor since 1997 when
it originated. Col. May served as
Chairman and Secretary during his
reign as a member of the Board of
Advisors. He received the S. Walter
Martin Vision Award in 2007.
Col. May and his wife Lucille
distributed lap throws, socks, and
4 Magnolia Manor | www.magnoliamanor.com
needed items to local nursing homes
that were donated by their Sunday
School at Park Avenue United
Methodist Church in Valdosta.
Thanks to Colonel May and his family
for all they mean to Magnolia Manor
and the Moultrie community.
Pictured above is Mrs. May’s favorite
picture of her husband. This picture
of Col. May was taken when he was
active in the service in the early 1970s.
Mrs. May says, “Magnolia Manor was
the Colonel’s pride and joy; he never
ran out of stories to tell me about his
days visiting Magnolia Manor.”
Special Recognition
With thanksgiving for all the support of churches and individuals in the South
Georgia Annual Conference, we gratefully acknowledge these leading United Methodist churches
of the conference for their financial support of Magnolia Manor’s ministry for senior adults.

Magnolia Manor CELEBRATES Centenarians!
A centenarian is a person who
lives to or beyond the age of 100
years. Because current average life
expectancies across the world are
less than 100, the term is invariably
associated with longevity. The United
States currently has the greatest
number of centenarians of any nation,
estimated at 70,490 on September 1,
2010. This corresponds to a national
incidence of one centenarian per
4,400 people.
Research on siblings and offspring
of centenarians has documented that
exceptional longevity runs strongly
in families. Studies of the offspring
of centenarians have shown that
centenarians escape many of the
common diseases associated with
aging. Centenarians have lower
frequency and delayed onset of
cardiovascular disease, hypertension,
and diabetes. Thus, they are regarded
as a model of healthy aging. Because
personality traits have been shown to
have substantial genetic components,
it was hypothesized that certain
personality features may be important
to the healthy aging observed in the
offspring of centenarians. Gender also
plays a role considering the bulk of
centenarians are women. At any age
women have a greater life expectancy
than men, and by the time one
reaches one hundred, the sex ratio is
four women to one man.
As the 1940 census records were
released on Monday, April 2, 2012,
centenarians can consider themselves
a part of living history. Centenarians
will get to experience the novelty of
seeing their own names and details
about their life in the records released
by the U.S. National Archives online
after 72 years of confidentiality. The
current Centenarians were part of the
21 million people alive in the U.S. and
Puerto Rico who were counted in the
16th federal decennial census, which
documents the tumultuous decade of
the 1930s transformed by the Great
Depression and black migration from
the rural South. It’s a distinction they
share with such living celebrities as
Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman.

Band Director, Debra Hughes

guitar and leading the jazz
band.
The term “Mardi Gras” refers to
events of the Carnival celebrations,
beginning on or after Epiphany and
culminating on the day before Ash
Wednesday. Mardi gras is French for
Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice
of the last night of eating richer, fatty
foods before the ritual fasting of the
Lenten season, which begins on Ash
Wednesday. Related popular practices
are associated with celebrations before
the fasting and religious obligations
associated with the penitential season
of Lent. Popular practices include
wearing masks and costumes, social
conventions, dancing, parades, etc.
Well Magnolia Manor residents
LOVE a reason to celebrate! The
residents had a big celebration on
Fat Tuesday as they listened to jazz
music performed by the Americus
High School jazz band under the

sidents Mildred Albritton

direction of Debra Hughes. Residents
and employees enjoyed tapping their
feet and clapping their hands to the
soothing jazz tunes. Some even got
up and performed the Jitter Bug
dance such as Pam Cannon, Activities
Director, and Resident Virginia
Jordan, pictured to the left.
The official colors for Mardi Gras
are purple for justice, green for faith,
and gold for power. The residents
made masks and beads to wear for
this celebration and as you can see
these colors were flashing across the
room. Mardi Gras has been celebrated
every year since the early 1700s when
the French settlers arrived in New
Orleans. Magnolia Manor residents
were thrilled to be part of this
fun-seeking group to carry on the
tradition!

verne Horton, Katron

Moon,
Mardi Gras!
Well Magnolia Manor residents
of St. Marys love to party, too. They
enjoyed celebrating Mardi Gras with
a N’awlins menu including alligator
tail as an appetizer, blackened rib tips
and stewed beef over jambalaya, Cajun
mixed beans garnished with steamed
crawfish and truff le butter, and
ended on a sweet note with Crème
Brulee Cheesecake.

Good Samaritan
Mother’s Day Offering
Magnolia Manor • Sunday, May 13TH
The Mother’s Day Offering for
the League of the Good Samaritan
is an offering that honors and
remembers our mothers who offered
life to us. I have the title Senior Vice
President for Church Relations and
Development here at Magnolia Manor.
When I consider that title and what it
means, I remember my mother.
four of us in the front seat with
my mom, so we could stop by and
pick up another mother and her
three children.
My mother was the Church
Relations and Development Director
in my home. What I mean is that she
directed our family to be involved at
the church and to be developed by
it. We attended Dexter Methodist
Church every Sunday. There was no
need to ask, we were going. My three
brothers and I got ready for church on
Saturday night while watching, “Have
Gun Will Travel” and “Gunsmoke”.
Clothes were gotten out and shoes
polished, if needed; toenails and
fingernails clipped. My mother always
gave us something to put in the
Sunday School offering. Going to
church often meant putting the
The Mother’s Day Offering for The
League of the Good Samaritan is basic
to the fundraising effort at Magnolia
Manor. What a great way to honor or
remember our mothers who loved us
and saw to it that we developed into
who we are.
Not every mother did that like mine
did, but every mother has their ways
of lovingly caring and leading their
children. It’s the stuff you never forget
and will always remain a part of you.
The League of the Good Samaritan
stands in the gap for many residents
who are unable to fully pay for their
care. Give a gift to honor or remember
your mother on this Mother’s Day.
Serving Christ with you,
Willie Beasley

NIFTY KNITTERS
Saint Simons Island
St. Simons Nursing Center ladies
enjoy knitting to touch the lives of
others. The smile on a new mom’s face
is priceless! The “more experienced
moms” love giving their hand-made
baby hats to the sweet little newborns.
A card and note is given with each
knitted baby hat.
Activities Director, Olivia James
took Mrs. Flynt with her to the
hospital to help deliver the baby hats.
James says, “What a fun day that

it!” The Nifty Knitters include Betty
Burnsed, Sarah Tait, and Eugenia
Maezer. Mrs. Flynt can no longer
knit but she is the “manager” and
the biggest cheerleader of the Nifty
Knitters. Mrs. Burnsed is an amazing
knitter and can create 3 hats in one
day. Mrs. Burnsed definitely has a

Celebrating Spring!
How To Prepare Your Garden
Members of the Magnolia Garden Club of Moultrie
presented information on geraniums, daffodils and
roses during Magnolia Manor South’s first ‘How
To Prepare Your Garden’ program on February 24,
2012. President of the club is Lorena Barhite who
introduced the members such as Mildred Rentz
who spoke about preparing the soil for a potted
geranium. Then Ruby Bowermelster showcased a
beautiful arrangement of daffodils from her garden
and instructed residents how to plant their own
daffodil garden. Last, Mary Phillips taught how to
prepare and plant roses. What an awesome event to
have as we approach Spring! Residents will know
how to grow their own flowers and be able to enjoy
the beautiful blooms around Magnolia Manor
South located in Moultrie, GA.
