Krakow and Malopolska`s Homage to Pope John Paul II
Krakow and Malopolska’s Homage to Pope John Paul II
Live broadcasts of the canonization mass in the Sanctuary of the Blessed John Paul II in
Łagiewniki, concerts by local artists and outdoor shows – this is how, on Sunday April 27th,
Krakow will celebrate the canonization of John Paul II.
The canonization mass for John Paul II and John XXIII will take place this Sunday (April
27th) in the Vatican. Those unable to visit Rome at the time, can participate in the
host of accompanying events in Krakow and throughout Malopolska.
Saturday April 26th
The celebrations start at 8:00 pm in front of the Sanctuary in Łagiewniki (ul. Totus
Tuus 30) with an outdoor event. The first, religious part of the concert entitled The
Colours of Mercy, will be followed by a more universal second part. The event is a live
project co-produced by the TVP1. The channel will broadcast it on Saturday evening.
The concert will be followed by an overnight prayer vigil starting at approximately
9:30 pm.
The vigil will feature testimonies by individuals blessed with special intercession by
the late Pope.
Sunday April 27th
Pilgrims arriving at the Sanctuary of the Blessed John Paul II can join in prayer with
the Vatican, while watching the canonization rituals on outdoor screens. The
broadcast of the canonization mass and Pope Francis' homily will start at 10 am in
front of the Sanctuary. Later, parallel to the Eucharist in the Vatican, a Holy Mass will
be celebrated in the Sanctuary. The fist thanksgiving mass will take place at 12:30
pm.
Later that Sunday, at 6:00 pm, a concert entitled: Krakow's Artists in Homage to their
Saint –will take place in the city centre at Mały Rynek. The concert, hosted by Beata
Malczewska_Starowiejska and Olgierd Łukaszewicz, will feature performances by
Renata Przemyk, Anna Szałapak, Lidia Jazgar, Zbigniew Wodecki, Kroke, Marek
Bałata, Amadeo Minghi and others.
We invite Krakovians and tourists to stop by at Franciszkańska 3, by the famous
"papal window". On Saturday (April 26th) and Sunday (April 27th) starting at 9
p.m., the front wall of the Bishops' Palace will be completely transformed with a
multimedia show. Three ten minute screenings at 9:10, 9:40 and 10:00 pm, will take
us back in time to when Pope John Paul II visited his homeland and conversed with
the faithful standing at the "papal window". The images of John Paul II dating back to
the 1980's and 90's will appear at Franciszkańska 3, allowing especially young people
who did not have the opportunity to meet the Pope to experience the famous
meetings.
The time left to the canonization mass is kept by an electronic clock placed at the
tower in the Sanctuary of the Blessed John Paul II. Its virtual equivalent, prepared by
Instytut Dialogu Międzykulturowego (Intercultural Dialogue Institute of John Paul II in
Krakow), can be found at
