HOBSON, LEIGH SUSAN (nee TURNER)
August 6, 1950 - September 2, 2016
Leigh passed away peacefully with loved ones at her side on Friday, September 2, 2016 after
a courageous battle with early onset Alzheimer’s.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband David and
their daughters Shannon (Harry) and Kelly (Andrew) and by her
brothers Terry (Teresa) and Lynn and father Fred (Holsey)
Turner. She was the loving Nana to James, Gabriel, Marleigh
and Caleb.
Cremation has taken place and family will receive friends at the
Ferguson Funeral Home in Meaford on Friday September 9th
from 7 until 9 o’clock. Interment will follow on Saturday
September 10th at 1:00 p.m. at Lavender Cemetery, Creemore.
Born Leigh Susan Turner, on August 6th 1950 in Kentville, Nova Scotia to Fred and Kay
Turner, Leigh was the youngest of three children; sister to brothers Lynn and Terry. Her
parents had full and successful careers; Fred in Insurance and Kay for the Royal
Conservatory of Music. As a result of these accomplishments, the family was well-travelled
and moved from the east coast to Montreal in 1955, before eventually putting down roots in
Toronto.
Early years in Montreal produced many of favourite stories. Leigh often recalled fond
memories like learning how to figure skate, watching her brothers excel in hockey and Terry
in War Canoe as well. There was also camping on Lake Champlain and spending time with
friends whose father’s played for the Montreal Canadiens. She was very proud of her family,
particularly her Dad’s contributions as a gunner on a naval ship in WWII and her mother’s
ambitious adventures travelling with the Conservatory.
In 1965, the Turner family moved to Etobicoke where Leigh attended Scarlett Heights
Collegiate from which she graduated in 1968 with a diploma in Arts and Science. For leisure,
a cottage was purchased on Raven Lake, just outside of Dorset, ON in the Muskokas, which
became a deeply cherished generational destination for many years. Favourite memories of
this time were of summers spent working at the Bala Inn.
A very accomplished academic, Leigh went on to graduate from Seneca College with
additional diplomas in Secretarial Studies (1974) and Business Administration (1980);
eventually being hired by Seneca in 1987 as Administrative Assistant to the Senior Dean. She
excelled in this advanced position which included planning fundraising events and working
closely with students. After donning many caps and forging close friendships, she retired
from the College in 1994 with treasured memories.
By this time, Leigh had already welcomed daughter Shannon born in 1971, she then went on
to meet and marry her husband David Hobson, a fellow Seneca alum on August 18th 1974 in
King City, ON. Seven years later came another daughter, Kelly and the years that followed
would include living in Brampton, ON and eventually building a home in Caledon East, ON.
In their down time, the four would enjoy each other’s company at the cottage, camping or
heading south for vacation in Fort Myers, FL.
Leigh was passionate about family, even going so far as to sacrifice her dream home in
support of her youngest daughter’s passion of horses and equestrian sport. The family spent
many happy years together enjoying the farm and each other. The couple briefly relocated to
Streetsville, a Mississauga suburb prior to David’s retirement in 2010.
While searching for a place to retire, David and Leigh found their haven in Meaford where
they became involved in the 55+ club, lawn bowling and First Baptist Church. They took
time to thoroughly enjoy all the community had to offer and met many wonderful friends,
who immediately welcomed and supported them through Leigh’s eventual battle with Early
Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Of particular delight was taking the short walk from the couple’s
home on Pollard Drive to the tree-lined trails that lead to the beach at Memorial Park. Leigh
also enjoyed spending time at the couple's recreational property in nearby Markdale, ON.
There, they made memories entertaining family, camping, stargazing, bushwhacking and
feeding fish and turtles in the spring-fed pond. Leigh also enjoyed knitting, crafting, reading,
doing puzzles (Crossword, Jigsaw and Sudoku), card and board games, watching movies,
interior and landscape design, listening and dancing to the music of her generation and
spending time outdoors with her three beloved dogs. But, above all, Leigh will be
remembered as a hard-working, vibrant soul with a wonderful sense of humour and a deep
love for those closest to her, particularly her daughters and grandchildren.
Leigh’s family extends heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Meaford Long Term Care
Centre for their compassion and support during her stay there.

Helen McQuarrie of Meaford passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving family, at
Grey Bruce Hospice in Owen Sound on Friday, July 15, 2016 at the age of 74.
God saw you getting tired when a cure was not to be,
So he put his arms around you and whispered ‘come with me’.
You didn’t deserve what you went through and so he gave you rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful - He only takes the best.

READE, MARGARET EILEEN
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our mother,
Eileen Reade (nee Belton), in Owen Sound on May 15th, 2016.
Born Margaret Eileen Belton in Toronto in September of 1934, Eileen excelled
in each of the many roles she played, always with
humility, compassion, and grace. Daughter, sister,
cousin, wife, mother, nana, great-nana, aunt,
companion, colleague, or friend, Eileen was always
available to lend a hand, extend a sympathetic ear, or
roll up her sleeves and simply start working to ease
somebody else’s load. Eileen has never shied away
from difficult tasks or hard work. Ultimately, it gave
her greater pleasure to serve others than to be served,
and she always did so with warmth and a smile.
Eileen beamed with immense pride when talking about her family. She
relished the opportunity to spend time with any of her 5 children and their
families, including 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
She
meticulously ensured that all family members, regardless of their age, were
appropriately acknowledged and celebrated on their birthdays. Never boastful
or overbearing, Eileen made sure that her friends and acquaintances had the
opportunity to learn a little something about the people who were fortunate
enough to call her mom or nana.
Mom’s capacity for friendship was limitless and unconditional. She was loyal,
arguably to a fault, and felt tremendous responsibility and commitment to the
friendships she cultivated over the years. Some of her long-standing, deeprooted friendships extended more than 6 decades, and the lines between family
and friends became indistinguishable. At the other end of the spectrum, mom
was constantly engaging new friends, often through the church and community
outreach work that she loved so much.
Eileen was a shining example of embracing all that life has to offer without
placing self-imposed or arbitrary limits based on her age. She obtained her
driver’s licence in her late 50’s, opening up a whole new world of adventure
for her. She expanded her horizons with great enthusiasm, traveling
throughout her 60’s, 70’s and 80’s to various destinations around the globe,
from the Amazon to Australia, Turkey to Hawaii, and many wonderful places
in between.
Over the last several years, Eileen and her loving companion, Jim Locke,
enjoyed countless trips together, mixing their passion for travel and their
shared sense of adventure. Their relationship was a gift they gave to each
other every day, and we are eternally grateful for the love, happiness and joy
that Jim and mom shared.
Eileen was predeceased by her parents, Francis and Margaret, her brother, Ted
(Joan), her former husband of 35 years, Jim Reade, and her great grandson,
Bennett. She is survived by many who will proudly keep her memory alive
and her legacy strong, including her 5 loving & grateful children, Theresa
(Gary), Ted (Laurie), Kathleen (Dave), Marlene and Mark (Karen); her 14
grandchildren: Brett, Kyle and Lynn Harding; Melissa, Andrew and Trevor
Reade; Scott, Steve and Ryan Brown; Kim Reade; Kayla, Fraser, Kristopher
and Madison Reade; her 3 beautiful great-grandchildren: Edie, Rooney and
Grayson, who will come to know their great-nana through the eyes of their
parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents; her brother, Ron (Mickey), whose love
and support of his little sister, “Babe”, was always a source of great
inspiration; and her dear sister-in-law, Barb, who was always there for her.
Mom’s unwavering faith, gentle and generous nature, and the pure kindness
that she extended to all she encountered confirm for us that she was already an
angel before her passing.
We all take solace in the knowledge that you are watching over us, mom. Rest
well, sweet lady!
Visitation will be held at the Ferguson Funeral Home in Meaford on Friday,
May 27 from 5:00 until 8:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Vincent’s
Catholic Church on Saturday, May 28 at 11:00 a.m.

GLASS, WILLIAM ‘BILL’
Engineer, Great Grandfather, Golf Course owner, Nick-name giver, Dog lover,
Bridge player, Fixer of things.
On April 11th, 2016. William (Bill) Glass; the patriarch
and chief nickname-giver of the Glass family passed
away in his sleep one hour after completing his 93rd trip
around the sun.
Bill was born April 10th in Glasgow, Scotland in 1923.
After graduating from Glasgow University in
Mechanical Engineering, he was enlisted into the
King’s army and sent to Burma in the latter part of the
war. While walking through a military workshop in
India, he met a young lady and struck up a
conversation. This was the start of a relationship that lasted nearly 70 years.
After marrying Joan in Scotland in 1949, Bill began study to complete his
second Engineering degree in the evenings, while working at Clyde Iron Works
during the day. Two girls arrived over the course of 5 years. A job offer from
Stelco in Hamilton, Ontario initiated a move across the ocean and away from
Scotland. Two boys arrived quickly thereafter and the family was complete. A
few other career moves included working for Atomic Energy of Canada in
Deep River, Ontario followed by a couple of years in Sydney, Nova Scotia
helping to construct a heavy water plant.
Joan and Bill were the proud parents to Jennifer (Denis), Janice (Gerard), Dave
(Sonja) and Andrew (Debbie), grandparents to Sara (Marlon), Scott (Migo),
Ryan (Alison), Steve (Robyn), Shiona (Allan), Simon, Rhys, Nolan, Liam and
Great-Grandparents to Maella, Aiden, Reid, Gavin and Miles.
Having attained two university degrees himself, Bill was a big believer in the
importance of a good education. All four children were encouraged to attend
post secondary school. Bill was very proud of the fact that he had children in
university for sixteen consecutive years, each one completing degrees in their
chosen field of study.
Bill had a great love for golf and dogs. Upon retirement from his Engineering
career he purchased and operated golf courses in Caledonia and later in Sauble
Beach. He spent many hours fixing equipment and greeting the daily flow of
golfers. One of his four legged friends happily accompanied him during these
long days. In many ways, these were the happiest years of his life.
On his second retirement to Meaford, Bill joined the local bridge leagues
through which he found much enjoyment and made many friends.
Joan’s death in 2012 left him without his rudder. Despite declining health, with
the help of Laura (his live-in caregiver)
he was able to stay in his own home
and enjoy the comforts of family close
by. The family is extremely grateful to
Laura for helping to make that
possible.
The family would also like to
acknowledge the care and gentle
assistance provided by both Dr. James
Wong and the CCAC home care
workers.
A celebration of Dad's life will follow in the next few months.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so, could make a donation to the
Meaford Hospital Foundation (www.mhfoundation.ca ), or a charity of your
