May 2016 The Next 48hOURS • What’s Hot Travelling & Living with the stars In this regular column, we chat to some of SA’s premier personalities about their travel experiences and favourite local pastimes and haunts. This week we catch up with the one, the only, SIV NGESI. What is your favourite travel destination, and why? My favourite travel destination has to be the city that never sleeps; the city that was so nice they had to name it twice; the place that owns Siv Ngesi…I’m of course talking about New York City. It’s absolutely magical and I won’t even try justify my answer. If you have been there, you will understand and if you haven’t, get yourself there so you can understand. What was your first international trip, and what do you remember most vividly about the experience? My first international trip was to the UK in 1993. My mom was studying there and I can still remember experiencing snow for the first time. Siv Ngesi recently travelled Brazil Wow, that white stuff is as cold as my ex. What is the first thing you usually do when you arrive at your destination and you’re trying to get acclimated? First thing I do is put my bags down and even before I clean up, I walk and get lost. Getting lost is always the best way to experience a new city. What for you is usually the best way to soak up the culture you’re in? The key to the culture of any place is the locals. I always make sure I speak to and befriend as many locals as possible. If you travel and don’t interact with the locals, you are seeing and experiencing only the tip of a gigantic iceberg. What has been your favourite cuisine that you have discovered on your travels? Thai food has knocked all others out of the park. What is your speciality in the kitchen? Take aways. I can cook very well, but I am too lazy to clean up. Describe your ideal night in, and out. I am a sucker for staying in. Usually I am in my room naked and watching series, listening to musicals and ordering take aways while I cuddle my laptop. A night out is always amazing with people I love , no matter what we do. Flying – love it, or hate it? Flying is amazing. I am lucky enough to be able to sleep for hours on flights. What makes life worth living? Knowing that life is all about the journey and not the destination and never forgetting that doing what you love is the key to happiness and success. ter. I often find myself struggling to find the perfect words to convey a particular meaning or feeling. It can take me a while to get to the point and my sentences are long and unexciting, with even clumsy sentence structures at times. Then, when I hear people speak on television – people who only know English as the language they grew up with and into, and their economic use of words and sentence structures – it amazes me. I watch interviews with uneducated gangsters in the USA, or children as young as ten or twelve in the UK, and they speak better than some of our adults. Then I hear our folk – even some of our politicians and other influential people in top jobs – that cannot speak English properly. Yet they expect me to take them seriously? Is there a fundamental flaw when we force people to express themselves in a language that is not part of their fibre? Or, those that in the written form may not have the proverbial ink flowing in their veins? This affects our confidence levels, our readiness for the job market etc. etc. I remember when I first sat in a tutorial at UCT, with my “coloured” accent, often thinking hard about how I was going to say what I clearly knew I wanted to say. My white classmates of course confidently spoke in tutorials (often offering the most insipid opinions), but it just sounded right: much like those loud Americans, as I found out in later years when I started travelling internationally. And it takes a long time to overcome this. It takes longer to learn some of these language skills, and even longer to unlearn some of these intrinsic characteristics that almost come as part of our DNA. And I wonder: is it getting better, or worse? Is my class of 21 students a true microcosm of where we are at regarding our linguistic challenges? How now brown cow? Encore By Rafiek Mammon [email protected] J ust how innate is the language you speak to your being? The very language you need to try and make others understand; what it is exactly that you mean to get across? How much time have we not wasted in our lives because of so-called “miscommunication”, or a “lack of understanding” of what someone thought you meant, versus what you actually meant? Sometimes it is even costly, very costly. I ask this because I realise that to this day, as a teacher at UCT, I find first language English speakers still have a huge head start on non-first language speakers of English. My students are currently in the process of the research presentations part of the course. This is where they choose a partner, choose a topic that I sign off on, do the research and present it, as a pair, to the rest of us who stand in judgment of their work, according to very strict criteria. Quite a daunting experience for most of them, I know. However, they are third year students who wish to pursue a career in Arts Journalism, therefore it is a necessary evil. And, in any case, I have done most of the talking in the first quarter. It is a breath of fresh air when they take over the class. An interesting part of this exercise is how they choose their partners. I have 21 students. Partners are only chosen towards the end of the first term – to give them a chance to get to know one another better, thus affording them the opportunity to choose someone with similar in- terests and possibly a similar sensibly as theirs. Strange: the pairs are still either wholly white or wholly black and the only two Indian/coloured girls in the class chose to work together. And this happens every year. There are only two pairs that are “mixed” – and mainly because on the day three of the four people in question were absent and therefore had to work together. But I digress. I wanted to talk about the innate ability to express oneself in a language…in this case, English. I myself am a victim of it. I grew up with both English and Afrikaans (in equal measure) around me: in my childhood home, and I was primary schooled in Afrikaans and my high school education was only in English. And while this gives one a good sense of bilingualism, it doesn’t specialise one as well as speakers of only one language would be. I don’t think I am a particularly good writer or conversationalist for that mat- To advertise in The Next 48hOURS CONTACT: Naushad Khan 021-802-4848 [email protected] May 2016 www.48hours.co.za The Next 48hOURS 3 The Next 48hOURS • Whats On The Playhouse offers a plethora of new theatrical works • From May 5 to 7, ‘The Cenotaph of Dan wa Moriri’ can be seen at the Playhouse Loft Theatre. (Tel) 031-582-8222 Zakifo Musik Festival to bring global music-makers together T he second annual Zakifo Musik Festival, Durban, features one of the most eclectic, multi-genre music line-ups ever gathered together in one festival programme, boasting some of the finest music-makers from France, Reunion Island, Mozambique, USA, Mali, Ghana, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and South Africa. It comes to Durban at the site of the old Natal Command opposite Battery Beach for two days only, on May 27 and 28. Surrounding the festival, there will be a host of satellite fringe events, workshops, couch-sessions, industry engagements and jams, including a closing concert at the Rainbow on Sunday, May 29. This year Zakifo has handpicked an array of global musicmakers to create a watershed programme for Durban. Following on from the precedent set last year, the focus on strong female artists continues at the festival this year – Zakifo 2016 will be staging some of the most outspoken, innovative, boundary-defying women performers active in the global music industry today, such as: 27 yearold Canadian singer Cold Specks, whose music has been described as doom-soul; New Zealand artist Estere Dalton, who has been compared to the likes of Erykah Badu and is a songwriter and beatmaker who plays/records a mixture of bass, synth, drums, guitar, vocal harmonies, keyboard, whistles, claps and kazoo; genre-shifting Malian singer/rapper and model Inna Bocoum, known on stage as Inna Modja; and Maya Kamaty, who has been dubbed the new, hypnotic voice of Reunion’s modern Maloya and Sega traditions. The members of Songhoy Blues True to Zakifo’s principle of delivering diverse, multi-cultural and inter-generational music of quality, they will present Malian rock band Songhoy Blues, whose documentary ‘They Will Have To Kill Us First’, premiered at last year’s Durban International Film Festival to wide international acclaim and who have been tearing up music festival circuits across Europe and the Americas with their unique blend of traditional Malian desert blues and modern rock sounds. The programme continues with Kid Francescoli, hailing from Marseilles, France and widely known for their upbeat pop melodies and diverse influences. All the way from Australia, internationally-renowned Queensland roots-reggae aficionados, Kingfisha, will rock the house with their world-class dub reggae. Taking it back to the island, Reunion’s Loryzine will perform a blend of modern, dynamic and traditional Maloya with an urban rhythm; Sauvage is a Parisbased act producing electronic music largely influenced by Africa and its many diasporas; Too Many Zoos is a brass house trio punk band from New York, famous for their viral internet video of the band rocking Times Square Station; while Ti Rat and Rouge will treat festivalgoers to original Reunion Island reggae. Zakifo is a member of the Southern African Music Festival Circuit (SAMFC): a regional fraternity of music festivals that take place over the months of May/ June each year as part of the East3 Route, an intergovernmental initiative promoting tourism, arts and culture development and collaboration between South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique. * Tickets available at www.webtickets.co.za. They make it the most substantive and stylish production to emerge from The Marvel Universe in years. It shows a maturity that was often lacking in the other incarnations and is peppered with sensational, high-octane special effects, shafts of droll humour and a storyline that doesn’t get too jumbled in the telling. Even our own John Kani features among the glittering galaxy of stars, briefly playing an African King. ‘Captain America: Civil War’ picks up where ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ left off, as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America (Chris Evans), leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. His team comprises the fierce Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), the telekinetically gifted Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and the high-flying Sam Wilson/ Falcon (Anthony Mackie). While on a routine assignment in Lagos, all hell breaks loose, resulting in a fiery trail of fatalities and mass destruction. U.S. Secretary of State (William Hurt) encourages the Avengers to agree to the Sokovia Accords, which will place them under the jurisdiction of the United Nations. This decision fractures the unity of the ‘Irrational Man’ FILM: RATCHET AND CLANK (3D) CAST: Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, Bella Thorne, Rosario Dawson, Sylvester Stallone, James Arnold Taylor, David Kaye, Jim Ward, Armin Shimerman DIRECTOR: Jerrica Cleland, Kevin Munroe RELEASE DATE: April 29 Ratchet and Clank tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Julia Roberts, Jason Sudeikis and Britt Robertson (‘Tomorrowland’, 8 The Next 48hOURS group. Captain America refuses to sign, believing they will lose their autonomy which will effectively destroy their ability to mobilize and act as needed. On the other hand, Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jnr), haunted by his own role in the civilian deaths that occurred during the big-bang climax of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, supports the solution. He is backed by his faithful No. 2, Lt. James Rhodes/War Machine (Don Cheadle), and the otherworldly humanoid philosopher-freak known as the Vision (Paul Bettany). These Avengers, who are supposed to protect the world, suddenly turn on each other in a brutal civil war. There is also another element in the wings awaiting the outcome. He is a Sokovia villain (Daniel Bruhl), who has his own agenda, and who is gleefully rubbing his hands at the unfolding drama. It’s now a superhero vs superhero extravaganza and in the process a host of fresh faces are thrown into the mix, in- cluding Spider-Man (Tom Holland), the Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). While there is the conspicuous absence of Thor and Hulk, the movies still retains its scope and vision. The production cleverly explores its own history with a 1991 opening flashback, in which James “Bucky” Buchanan (the brooding Sebastian Stan) is sprung from cryogenic deep-freeze by Russian soldiers. The Russians then proceed to activate the cold-blooded, metal-armed killing machine lurking within him and known as the Winter Soldier. He is sent on a deadly mission and materialises in the present day to add to the mayhem. The acting is solid as each character slips effortlessly into their designated roles. As super-hero movies go, this one is clever and well-crafted and despite its lengthy running time (146 minutes), the momentum is maintained throughout with never a dull moment. Team Iron Man in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ FILM: X-MEN: APOCALYPSE CAST: AMES McAVOY, MICHAEL FASSBENDER, JENNIFER LAWRENCE, ROSE BYRNE, SOPHIE TURNER, OLIVIA MUNN, BEN HARDY DIRECTOR: BRYAN SINGER RELEASE DATE: May 20 and the importance of discovering one’s own identity. Following his acclaimed work on ‘XMen: Days Of Future Past’, director Bryan Singer takes the franchise to new heights with ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, in which the X-Men battle the original and most powerful mutant – Apocalypse. In 1983, the invincible and immortal Apocalypse is set free after being entombed for several millennia. Enraged that his kind are no longer treated as gods, Apocalypse assembles a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto, to destroy humankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. To end Apocalypse’s path of global destruction, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) and Professor X (James McAvoy) lead a team of young X-Men in an epic showdown with a seemingly unstoppable enemy. The granny brews the chai and the grandson delivers it to your car. All you do is honk your horn and have your money ready. At first I had to get used to this. I thought it rather rude to be honking your horn at people, but this is the tradition, so I would honk the horn in the morning, and again in the evening to get my delicious, fragrant, milky, very sweet chai fix. I love to make it at home, but add just enough sugar to bring out the wonderful spiciness. Masala chai is a spice flavoured tea beverage which is made by brewing black tea with a mixture of aromatic Indian spices and herbs. Chai originated in India, and the beverage has gained worldwide popularity. It can now be found on the menu of most restaurants. The history of chai tea dates back 5000 years to the ancient courts of Siam and India. Chai is made using different formulas, depending on the region where it is being consumed, but there are a number of standard ingredients: black tea, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, fennel, clove and black pepper. As much as I love a good cup of coffee, I realize I have to tone it down during the day, because I could easily have one on the hour and I’m sure that that amount of caffeine can’t be too good for you. Now, you would have to drink three cups of chai tea to achieve the same amount of caffeine you get in a single cup of coffee, so it makes sense to have a few cups of Chai instead of coffee every day. But who’s to say that you have to stick to the formula when making your delicious chai? Why not try baking it instead. Let’s cook! Chai Latte Muffins with Pistachio Glaze Ingredients: (Makes approximately 16) • • 1 Packet Sasko Quick Treats Bran Muffin Mix 300ml milk • • • • • • • • • 2 Regular Ceylon Teabags 125ml sunflower oil 2 Extra-large eggs 2 ½ tsp ground mixed spice 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground ginger A pinch of cardamom A pinch of ground black pepper A pinch of ground fennel Fooding around with Jenny Morris Glaze: • 1 cup icing sugar 2 • 2 tbsp milk • 25g raw pistachios Method: Place the milk into a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Once simmering, add the teabags and take off the heat. Stir gently and allow to steep and cool down for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180*C and place 16 muffin liners into 2 muffin, baking trays. Once the milk has cooled, squeeze out the teabags and discard them before measuring the milk again (you want to have 250ml remaining, if there is less than 250ml then just add a little extra milk.) Whisk the milk together with the oil and eggs. Combine the Quick Treats Bran Muffin Mix and the mixed spice, cinnamon and ginger, cardamom, pepper and fennel. Add the dry ingredients to the wet @jennymorrischef ingredients and stir until combined. Fill each muffin case ¾ full and bake for 20-25 minutes. Allow to cool. Place the raw pistachios into a blender and blitz into a powder. Mix the icing sugar and milk together to form a thick glaze. Once the muffins have cooled completely, drizzle a little glaze over each and sprinkle over equal amounts of the pistachio dust. NB: Baking instructions are a guideline only. Baking times and quantity may vary depending on appliance temperatures and size/shape of the muffin pan. Infinity tops make packing a cinch for the regular traveler Gadget Buddies By Imran Khan Turtle Shell 2.0 N ot too long ago Outdoor Tech released their latest wireless boom box. We have been searching for it for some time and finally came across it online at Mantality. The ‘Turtle Shell 2.0’ is one of the most rugged, water resistant Bluetooth speakers around right now. From the outside the device looks very interesting, made up of triangular patterns that face various directions. So, it’s not your usual box style wireless speaker. The idea behind this innovative design is to allow the device to provide “omni-directional” sound, which fills the room. We were also impressed with the standard camera threading built into the base which will allow you to mount the speaker to a tripod or Outdoor Tech’s ‘Turtle Claw’. The device runs Bluetooth 4.0 and has a built in mic, which makes it great for making conference calls wirelessly. In terms of battery, Outdoor Tech have listened to the fans and packed the 2.0 with 16 hours worth of playing time. Get your own Turtle Shell 2.0 this weekend from www.mantality.co.za for R1799, which includes free delivery. Eight Sensor Parking System Ever start sweating when the only parking bay available is right up against a pillar? Or you have to parallel park? If you answered yes to one of these, then this gadget is for you. We have searched far and wide for one of these kits and finally found a Turtle Shell 2.0 now available in more colours May 2016 8 Sensor Parking system DIY system. The system uses eight ultrasonic sensors to help you park and avoid bumping into objects. The proximity detectors emit acoustic pulses and are able to detect the reflected signal of objects which the computer uses to calculate distance within 300mm. We found that the kit was easily marked with tags that help you connect the correct sensor to the control box ports. The kit also comes with a two inch LCD screen, which displays objects and acoustic tones. You would be able to fit this kit to a range of vehicles, including trucks, and the kit even comes with a ‘hole saw’ bit to help you mount the sensors into the bumpers. You can purchase one of these kits from zook. co.za for around R1500. ‘Tom Clancy’s The Division’ We always love a good Tom Clancy game and you can’t go wrong with the latest from software developer Ubisoft. This one takes a break from the normal style of game play and yes, it has also joined the world of ‘online play’, meaning you will need an internet connection to play the game. The world of ‘Division’ is an online, loot driven Roll Playing Game (RPG) disguised as a third person shooter and set in the grim aftermath of a biological attack on New York City. The storyline sticks to the tried and tested survival style, but the game has a much broader mission and objective. The Division is a classified unit of self-supported tactical agents. Leading seemingly ordinary lives among us, The Division agents are trained to operate independently of command, as all else fails. Fighting to prevent the fall of society, the agents will find themselves caught up in an epic conspiracy, forced to combat not only the effects of a manmade virus, but also the rising threat of those behind it. When everything collapses, your mission begins. Get your copy of Ubisofts latest game on PC, PS4 and Xbox One ranging from R630 (PC) to R899 (Consoles) from takelot.com.
