Carnival!
SUNDAY, JUNE 26 FROM10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Family Center will again be holding a carnival to kick off our Summer Reading Program. It will be for program participants only. There will be a
variety of carnival games. Last year's favorites, the “Water Slide” will return.” Enroll in our Summer Reading Program by June 25 and receive
15 tickets to enjoy all the activities. Anyone who enrolls on the day of the carnival will receive 10 tickets.
Our carnival is scheduled for Sunday, June 26, 2016 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. It will be held in the library staff parking lot. A rain date, if
necessary, will be announced.

SUMMER FRESH FRUIT TART –
GRADES 5 THROUGH 12

June 27
Tweens and teens will make a delicious tart
using fresh fruit. Each participant will leave
with one tart in a bakery box.
Registration begins June 13.
SUNSET BEACH THEMED WALL CLOCK –
GRADES 5 THROUGH 12
Wed. 7:00-8:00 pm
June 29
Tweens and teens will create a beach themed
wall clock using paint, sand, shells, and small
pebbles.
Registration begins June 15.
INTRO TO CODING –
ENTERING GRADES 4 AND UP
Thurs. 3:00-5:00 pm

In this hands-on, instructor taught class,
children will learn basic HTML, a computer
language, while they work in pairs and learn
the structure of this code. All materials are
provided.
Registration begins June 16.
SHARK FIN CUPCAKES –
ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12

Celebrate “Shark Week” at the library. Each
participant will make three shark themed
cupcakes and take them home in a bakery
box.

Tweens and teens will enjoy homemade ice
cream sandwiches using freshly made
waffles. A demonstration on how to make ice
cream will also take place.

patterned papers, and Mod Podge to
decorate a magazine file organizer that can

Tweens and teens will make a delicious salsa
using fresh fruit and herbs. Participants will
also transform ordinary chips into a yummy
summer treat.

VIDEO GAME CREATOR – ENTERING

Aug. 24
Participants will create their own video games
using an on-line website to customize
different features. Please create a free
account on SPLODER.COM before the
program. Any questions about the program

LIBRARY is offering REGENTS REVIEW
classes for the following exams. A nonrefundable check for $40.00 per class, made
payable to the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public
Library, will be required at the time of
registration. Please include the student's name
and the class(es) registered for on the memo
line of the check. Registration began Tuesday,
May 3 at the Information Desk. Please see

PSAT/SAT TEST PREPARATION COURSE –
GRADES 10 THROUGH 12

(Oct. 20 will be held in the auditorium)
This test preparation course is taught by state
certified teachers and subject specialists.
Students will be asked to purchase a review
book. Since the SAT exam has changed, the
instructors are currently evaluating review
books and the title for the selected one will be
announced at a later date, but prior to Sept. 1,
2016. In addition a notebook, pen or pencil, and
a calculator will be needed at each session. A
non-refundable check for $85.00, made
payable to POB Library, will be required at the
time of registration.

Information Desk. Registration is open to
others, space permitting, starting Thursday,
September 8. The library reserves the right to

General Program Guidelines
• In order to register for a Family Center program, your child's date of birth must be on
file in the Family Center. A birth certificate or passport will be required for proof of age.
Registration for all programs is age specific.
• Preference is given to Plainview-Old Bethpage School District residents.
• POB Library Card numbers are required at the time of registration. If your register for
someone other than your child, you must have that person's card number as well.
• All programs begin on time. After 10 minutes NO ONE WILL BE ADMITTED.
• *See DATES AT A GLANCE for program registration dates.
• An accompanying adult must remain in the Library while the child is attending the
program. For safety reasons, we cannot leave the program to escort the child to the
restroom.
• THE 3 STRIKE RULE: Please call 938-0077 X 237 to cancel if your child is unable to
attend a Family Center program. Any family that fails to cancel two times will receive a
warning. When this happens a third time, the family will be placed on a waiting list for
any program they register for during a 3-month period.

Guidelines for Auditorium Programs
PLEASE REMEMBER:
• No children under three years of age
• We cannot be responsible for unattended children
• Allow sufficient time to park
• No one will be admitted after the performance begins
• No food or drink is permitted in the auditorium
Guidelines for Lottery Programs
• Lottery applications are available in the Family Center
• One entry per family
• You may request up to 4 tickets
• Unclaimed tickets will be distributed on a first-come basis. No family may receive
more than 6 tickets in total
• Staff will draw a starting number and tickets will be distributed to patrons holding
that number and the numbers following in sequence until all seats are filled
• Winning numbers will be posted in the Family Center
• Winning tickets must be picked up in the Family Center. Please bring your library
card, too!

We are very pleased to be hosting Dr. Jean Lau Chin,
Professor in the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological
Studies at Adelphi University on Sunday, August 21 at 2:30 pm in
the Auditorium for a presentation
followed by a meet-and-greet
Reception. Professor Chin is
d i s t i n g u i s h e d a s a n e d u c a t o r,
administrator, clinician and scholar on
cultural competency and women's
roles in Asian minority culture. Her
work on leadership, diversity and
women's issues has led to a number
of invitational talks and publications in
these areas. Most recently she was
invited to participate on the Oxford
Roundtable program on women and
leadership, and was designated as a
Fulbright Specialist in this area.

Cuban Art in Museums, Galleries & Private Collections
with Inés Powell
Tuesday, June 14 at 2:00 pm
Powell's first lecture, Cuban Art in Museums, Galleries and Private
Collections: From Pre-Columbian Times to the 1950's, offers our
audience the opportunity to learn about the little known Museo
Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana, founded in 1913 and
dedicated to Cuban as well as international art.
The 350+ Year Evolution of Salsa
with Jose Obando
Thursday, July 7 at 2:00 pm
Salsa, music and dance expert Jose Obando will discuss the
evolution of salsa. Jose Obando is the salsa consultant for the
Metropolitan Museum of Art's Department of Musical Instruments.
Mr. Obando is also one of the founders of the Salsa Museum in
Spanish Harlem, N.Y.

Enjoy an evening of Latin American music! You don't have to
understand the Spanish language to feel its Cuban beat. Whether
it's the meringue, salsa, cha-cha or tunes you've never heard before,
Grupo Sabrosura, a six piece band, will offer our audience a night to
feel happy and move to these electrifying sounds and rhythms.
