Which Way to Go?
IN THIS ISSUE
By Rev. Harry Gyokyo Bridge
I
was recently asked to address
some high school seniors who
will soon be graduating and going
off to college. Rather than go into
too much detail about my own life,
I decided to talk about the Middle
Way, one of the most basic teachings of Buddhism. In fact, it is
so basic that it can be applied to
almost any situation.
The Middle Way is also known
as the way between extremes.
It goes back to the story of the
Siddhartha – born a prince, he
rejected the way of pleasure that
kingship offered. But he also rejected the way of self-mortification and
ascetic practices that were popular
in India at the time. When he sat
under the Bodhi Tree and attained
awakening, one of the things he
awakened to was this Middle Way.
One example that I can think
of for someone starting in college is
the balance between fun and study.
Of course study is important, but
study at the expense of socialization is an extreme – part of college is meeting people and making
friends. And of course, partying at
the expense of studying is an extreme as well. A healthy balance allows for both, resulting in a more
well-rounded person, ready to face
the challenges of life.
This flexibility allows one to
have the “normal” goals such as career, family, etc., while at the same
time giving guidelines on how to
do this in a Buddhist way. I really
feel that the Middle Way is applicable in almost any situation, allowing Buddhism to become a part of
our everyday lives.

n a prior report, I mentioned we
would be seeing a movie about
the Fukushima disaster in two segments as it is quite long. Our Rev.
Bridge had sent a synopsis about
this but didn’t quite make it in time
for the last printing. Following is his
version: It is called “Hearts Together” and tells the story of jazz musician Bob James visiting a town in
Iwate prefecture that was devastated
by the 2011 tsunami. He wrote a
song, called “Put Your Hearts Together” for Japan, and performed it
with a group of local jazz musicians,
the Sand Pipers. The story doesn’t
end there, however - he changes the
title to “Put OUR Hearts Together,”
his daughter writes lyrics to it, and
eventually he ends up working with
the famous Japanese singer Seiko
Matsuda to perform it again in Japan.
Renie Grohl our wonderful craft
leader who has given us many hours
of her precious time will be departing for home after Mother’s Day. At
this time we offer her our “sincere
thanks”, for her assistance and look
forward to seeing her back again in
the late Fall. Wishing you a safe trip
home, Renie.
Attention Pastry Chefs!

ast month, the Jr. YBA participated in the Bay District
Volleyball Tournament at Alameda Point. A big thank you
goes out to everyone whose
contributions made this possible. We are especially grateful to Shirley Sommers from
Berkeley Ohtani for providing
volleyball instruction and securing a gym in Berkeley High
for our weekly practices.
Looking ahead, the Jr. YBA
will assist in the preparation
and man various booths for the
Nikkoland Bazaar. This event
is open to the public, and attendees can enjoy food, games,
raffles, and much more. The
Bazaar will last over the course
of two days: Saturday, June
14th, 3:00-8:00 PM and Sunday, June 15th, 12:00-7:00 PM.
Please make sure to mark these
dates in your calendar, since
this is an event you definitely
do not want to miss.
mix of Mardi Gras and a week of
food/arts and crafts festivals. Since
I was halfway across the country, I
decided I may as well visit Mariko
to help celebrate her 30th birthday
on May 4. Unfortunately, it has
been storming here and I haven’t
felt like going out in this inclement weather. However, it has given
me time to write my article without
procrastinating and submitting it
late. I think there’s some Buddhist
teaching there, but I can’t place it!
