“Plein air” is a French term
used by painters in the
19th century (and since)
to describe painting done
outside on location instead of
in the studio. A less common
term sometimes used in
English for paintings done
outdoors is “alfresco,” but
in Italian it apparently has
different meanings, including
“to be in the cooler” (in jail).
The Impressionists believed
in the merits of painting
en plein air, and much
of their work was done
outdoors. Originally a French
movement, plein air painting
quickly spread to the rest of
Europe, America and Russia.
Among the many famous 19th
century painters who painted
extensively outdoors before
and after the Impressionists
are Constable, Turner, Corot,
Manet, Cezanne, Gauguin,
VanGogh, Whistler and
Sargent.
Mary Cassatt, Georgia
O’Keefe, Edward Hopper,
Rockwell Kent, Fairfield
Porter, Alex Katz and Wolf
Kahn are a few examples
of the many 20th century
painters whose work
continued to be influenced
by plein air practice and
tradition.

Guerrilla Painter®
POCHADE BOX
“Pochade” means something like “quick
sketch” in French. A pochade box is
the one essential piece of equipment a
“Guerrilla Painter” needs - a compact,
portable painting studio in a small box.
Traditional pochade boxes have three
simple parts:
• A hinged lid that works like an easel
and wet painting carrier combined.
• A palette that lifts out or slides to one side or is in the bottom of the box itself.
• Compartments to hold paints and brushes, etc.
Pochade boxes were used by 19th and
early 20th century landscape painters, but
they were pretty much extinct by the mid
1980s. Traditional pochade boxes came
in all shapes and sizes. Some of the little
ones with thumb holes in the bottom
were jury-rigged from recycled cigar
boxes. Most pochade boxes were used for
oils, but they were made for pastels and watercolors as well.
With a pochade box, you can get
everything you need (and then some)
into one small, compact package so that
you can take it anywhere you want to
go without a hassle. Obviously, getting
everything into one box means compromise. (Who said a guerrilla’s life
is easy?) There are lots of ways of getting
around this limitation, but if the point is to
paint more paintings in more places, why
fight it? It’s pretty hard to argue with the
convenience of being able to open the lid
of your pochade box and start painting.
When you’re done, close the lid and take off.

The fibers are impregnated with
a resin that keeps the “Masonite”
from warping when it gets wet. The resin also protects the fibers from the
deleterious effects of oils.
“I’ve been painting on this surface for more than 20 years and it has held up
very well. After being taped to the roof of my greenhouse for a year, it showed
some slight fading - ending up about 10% lighter in shade.”

Guerrilla Cartón™ with its warm tan color makes a wonderfully sympathetic
surface for oil, acrylic or pastel paintings. It is possible to paint directly on it,
but many oil and acrylic painters use a coat of clear acrylic gesso or matte gel
medium to make this surface a little less absorbent.
One nifty property of Guerrilla Cartón Board™ is that it does not buckle when
wet, so it is possible to prime with gesso or gel mediums and it still lays flat.
Very lightweight and compact, good for use while traveling. Take advantage
of these thin, light-weight panels in the field and then use acrylic medium or
some similar adhesive to mount your finished paintings on Museum Board,
Masonite or Gatorfoam before framing.

Almost all methods of “stretching” really only attach the paper
to the backing board. The paper is not so much “stretched” as
“shrunk”. When the paper is re-soaked during a wet wash, the
small amount of tension that is there is released, and buckles
form. I started looking for a simple way to put more tension on
the paper. I finally came up with a way to put tension on the paper as it is being tightened down, so that no matter how wet
the paper got again, there would always be more tension to keep it flat. The result is The Watercolorboard™.

I was managing a cattle ranch in Colorado when I took
up plein air painting back in the early 80s. I had come
across Winston Churchill’s essay, “Painting as a Pastime”
in which he prescribes painting as therapy for stress

and overwork. Since I was stressed and overworked, and

Churchill is a pretty good persuader, I took to painting.
No sooner had I taken up my newfound pastime than it dawned
on me that the last thing I wanted was to have one of my cowboys catch me
in the act. Fortunately, I came across a little book that had some illustrations
of a small portable painting rig, called a pochade box. Now that was the
ticket! So I made one small enough to hide under my pickup seat. It was as cute as
a bug’s ear and worked great – none of the ranch hands found out my secret.
By the time I coined the term “guerrilla painter” I had been doing volunteer
rural development work in Central and South America for several years. In
my spare time I had been sneaking around with my homemade pochade
boxes, capturing the unsuspecting world around me in little oil paintings. It
was only a matter of time before I began thinking of myself as a guerrilla
painter. One thing led to another and before I knew it, my son, Arthur and I
had started the company that makes the popular Guerrilla Painter® Pochade
Boxes.
Today, Guerrilla Painter is
the leading manufacturer
of products for artists who
travel and paint out of the
studio.
Now?
Carl Judson, the original “Guerrilla
Painter”, has been on the road.
Visiting plein air events, old and
new friends, artists groups, and
painting.
Outfitted with his sleek new studio
ride (dubbed “Moby Van”), he’s
able to take his ‘dog and pony’
show on the road.

the coming year, and would love the
