Hoblitzelle Foundation Contributes $2 Million to Get the
Dirt Flying at Moore Park Gateway
A barbeque picnic, a flag ceremony, and the national anthem.
These elements provided the perfect atmosphere on May
23 when The Trinity Trust and the City of Dallas held a
groundbreaking at an early Memorial Day picnic at Moore
Park, which is the first major connection into the Trinity River
Corridor from the Southern Sector. After the Crows Nest
singers of Boy Scout Venture Crew 67 and Troop 67 led the
flag ceremony, a student jazz singer from the Townview Jazz
Band sang the national anthem.
Paul Harris, Hoblitzelle Foundation president, had some
exciting news for the crowd of 150 officials, supporters and
neighbors at the festive gathering. “Mayor Leppert and
distinguished guests, on behalf of the Hoblitzelle Foundation,
I am proud to announce a $2 million gift from the foundation
to help expand and renovate the Phase II plans for Moore Park
Gateway.”

When Moore Park Gateway is expanded and
renovated, it will serve as a starting point for
such activities as a bike ride or walk along the
river, walking to festivals, or simply viewing
the beautiful downtown Dallas skyline.
At the close of the ceremony, Mayor Leppert
drove a backhoe and got the dirt flying to
cheers. Afterwards, guests enjoyed a delicious
BBQ lunch, thanks to Eddie Deen & Company,
while the Townview Jazz Band played and
entertained participants with popular songs.
Project organizers and the City of Dallas
began construction in the first phase of the
Moore Gateway Park in May 2008, with plans
for completion of this phase in approximately
12 months. Subsequent construction phases
will take place in 2009-2011.
The Trinity Trust thanks the following for
their help and generous support: Eddie Deen
& Company Catering; M&M The Special
Events Company; City of Dallas; Trinity River
Corridor; Crows Nest singers of Boy Scout
Venture Crew 67 and Troop 67; and Townview
Jazz Band.
Thanks to Dana Driensky for his contribution to the event photography.

Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now. Goethe
Dallas has dreamed a new dream for itself for the 21st century – one that realigns us with nature. Contact with the natural world is
one of the most basic of human needs, a need much forgotten by the 20th century city. Amazingly, Dallas is one of the only cities in the
world capable of enacting such a dream because of the 20 miles of raw nature that runs through the center of the city. Even when money
is short, nature is always there.

Model
Within five years, these 10,000 acres will offer access to nature trails for walkers, bikers, and horseback riders. Only a few blocks from
Downtown Dallas, city dwellers and visitors will stroll along the edge of the urban lake under two Santiago Calatrava bridges or perhaps
paddle a canoe along the natural lake to the south. Families will cross between the two lakes to picnic on the island that rests between
the lakes and the river. Upstream, just under the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, kayakers will challenge the advanced white water course,
while others may row along the lazy river course down to meet the main river. It is a dream that is becoming our reality.
8 Living Green Series:
Todd Howard
After years of debate and discussion about the Trinity River Corridor, Dallas is moving forward on this $2 billion dollar dream project,
80% of which is already raised. Our elected federal officials have secured funding to add to state, county, city, and private citizen support.
The City of Dallas – our mayor, our city council, our city manager, and myriad city staff – is committed. Designers and architects have
created plans to make this river corridor a thing of beauty, available for our use and pleasure. The Memorial Day groundbreaking
of the Moore Park renovation signaled the first major connection from the Southern Sector to The Trinity Project. The Trinity River
Audubon Center, the flagship for Audubon’s science education and conservation initiatives in Texas, will celebrate their grand opening
the weekend of October 18-19. Construction has begun on the first Calatrava bridge, and steel will be delivered within a few months for
the graceful arches.

Goethe’s words of 250 years ago have never been more applicable than in Dallas, Texas, in 2008:
Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary
truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence
moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision,
raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would
have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.
Dallas is ready. Bring nature back into the city. Help the magic begin.

a design for the

a way that would
not interfere with the

Creation of the Model
The Trinity Project is one of the most ambitious and visionary
urban development efforts in the history of the United States.
To represent in three dimensions the scope and scale of the
project, The Trinity Trust, with funding provided by ALON USA,
commissioned Dallas artists Charles and Susie Kendrick to design
and build a model that will reside permanently in The Trinity
Center. Unveiled on September 9 after more than 18 months of
work, the model is a spectacular vehicle for galvanizing support
and funding for The Trinity Project.
“We wanted to create something that truly represented a moment
in Dallas’ history and would enable all who viewed it to place
themselves in relation to The Trinity Project,” says Charles.
“To accomplish this, we decided early on to incorporate unique
materials and technologies into the model as a way to stimulate
the imagination and communicate the message of the Trinity River
designers.”
At a scale of 150 feet per one inch, the 20 ft. x 7 ft. model represents
10 miles from end-to-end, approximately one-half of the entire
Trinity River Project. When the Kendricks finish placing all
of the final pieces on the model, it will contain approximately
40,000 individual homes, more than 40,000 trees, 60,000 cars
and thousands of commercial buildings. The model’s downtown
skyscrapers even contain their actual outside architectural detail,
including windows, metalwork and doors. More than 45,000 feet

of fiber optics are intricately woven into the model to create a
spectacular nighttime scene, from lighted streetlamps to the
distinctive designs on Reunion Tower and Renaissance Tower.
Perhaps most amazing is the tiny, fully functioning video screen
built into the American Airlines Center complete with a Trinity
video playing (look closely or you’ll miss it!).
The enormity of the project required assistance from hundreds
of people across the world. Approximately 15 local artisans
contributed to the model, while hundreds more in seven different
countries helped out as well. In China alone, 40 people with one
vendor were involved with just one element of the model.

s president and CEO of ALON USA, an independent refiner
and marketer of petroleum products, Jeff Morris has a lot on his plate.
From monitoring a volatile energy market to representing the company
on Wall Street, Morris is a busy man. He isn’t too busy, however, to
recognize that he and his company can play an important role in
something he believes will be transformational for the city of Dallas –
The Trinity Project.
RENT
THE
TRINITY
CENTER
ALON USA’s initial contribution of $25,000 toward a privately funded
study at the request of former Mayor Laura Miller began what has
since become a long and generous partnership.
“Every great city has some sort of waterfront and iconic park,” said
Morris. “The more I learned about The Trinity Project, the more I
believed that this was Dallas’ opportunity to build something that
would truly transform the inner core of the city. Not only would we
have the largest and most outstanding urban park in the country, but
we would spur a tremendous amount of new development around the
periphery of the park. Realizing the opportunity this project presented,
we decided that ALON USA would take a more active role in supporting
the project by working with and helping to fund The Trinity Trust.”
Since ALON USA first became involved, the company has contributed
more than $1 million to support The Trinity Trust’s efforts. It has served
as the Lead Sponsor of The Trinity Trust’s Landmarks Campaign, the
Presenting Sponsor of the 2007 LAUNCH the Trinity bridge fundraiser,
a Trinity Center Founder and a Balanced Vision Founder. Most
significantly, however, ALON USA funded the design and construction
of The Trinity Model, which was unveiled on September 9.
“Large maps and renderings provide us with strong visuals, but
capturing the scope and scale of this project demands a threedimensional model,” said Morris. “Our hope is that this model will help
the public and potential donors visualize the project’s possibilities, and
lead to greater financial support for all of the planned elements.”

The first sign of the Trinity revival can be seen on Saturday,
Oct. 18, when the Trinity River Audubon Center opens to
the community. Designed by the famed architect Antoine
Predock, 2006 AIA Gold Award Recipient, the Center is
shaped like a bird, as the roots of the Audubon are bird
watching. The Center is situated on 120 acres just eight
minutes from downtown Dallas, and will be the flagship
Center for Audubon’s science education and conservation
initiatives in Texas.
The public is invited to visit on Oct. 18 and 19 when
admission will be free all weekend long.
Activities and programs will revolve around four themes:
Get Outside – See birds of prey, learn about camping,
hiking, and kayaking, and go birding.
Naturally Healthy – Take a Yoga class, learn about
organic foods and heirloom vegetables, and get tips for a
successful picnic.
Living Green – Go to workshops on composting, recycling,
water conservation and energy conservation, learn about
native plants and wildscaping.
Nature Play – Children will build a bird nest, identify
insects, learn about Texas wildlife, go on scavenger hunts,
enjoy puppet shows and storytelling, and create nature
art.
The Trinity River Audubon Center, a $37 million restoration
and capital improvement project, is a partnership between
the City of Dallas and the National Audubon Society. The
Center is the first LEED-certified building constructed
by the City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department,
and models conservation through its energy efficiency
and sustainable building materials including a grass roof,
recycled blue jeans and milk jugs.
As part of the Dallas Trails Master Plan, the numerous
citywide trail systems are designed to connect to the Center
- providing a premier trail destination location. Each
year, more than 100,000 families and visitors will enjoy
the Center’s hiking trails, picnicking facilities, nature
viewing blinds, and various programs and workshops.

Trinity Strand Trail
Texas Horse Park
This
summer
was
both
productive and fun as we had 10
young interns from south Dallas
working as part of our Summer
Green Team. The interns
learned how to build trails, test
water samples and grow and
care for natural vegetation. We
are also working to finalize our
trail master plan, with specific
attention on how to connect soft
surface trails to the hardscape
spine trails. Tying trails into
downtown, White Rock Creek
and other areas will also be a
focus of the master plan.
The Trinity Strand Trail has
had an exciting year with our
groundbreaking
on
Turtle
Creek Boulevard in May.
Mayor Leppert and other civic
leaders attended the event. We
anticipate completing the first
trailhead and section of trail by
the end of this year.
Texas Horse Park is very close
to finalizing several generous
private gifts that will bring us
closer to our goal of opening
in 2011. This year we have
received grant monies from
Hillcrest Foundation, The
Dallas Foundation, Krickett
and Randall Goss and Louis
Beecherl and family.
From Casie Pierce
The Greater Dallas Planning
Council awarded us its Dream
Study Award, which recognized
our project’s exemplary trail
design. We are also excited
about the recent addition of
Shelly White to The Friends of
the Trinity Strand Trail. Shelly
is our new Executive Director,
and she brings a wealth of
experience to our multi-faceted
project.

Trinity Commons

In August, the City of Dallas
finalized the purchase of the
650 acres that will soon be our
home. We are thankful for the
continued support of Dallas
Mayor Tom Leppert, the
Dallas City Council, several
state legislators and our
Community Partners. Their
efforts will help us build on
our successes and fortify what
we have built.
The
Trinity
Commons
Foundation continues to work
on its mission to see that
what the voters approved in
1998 becomes a reality. The
Foundation believes that it is
important for Dallas citizens
to feel a sense of ownership in
the corridor. To that end, we
sponsor Carpe Diem, a fishing
tournament on the River, the
Trinity River Levee Run and
the South Dallas Education
Initiative, an ongoing series
of community meetings in the
Southern Sector to explain
what the Trinity Project will
mean to those communities.
As we develop plans for an
upcoming luncheon, we will
keep you informed.
