the spirit - Lake Greeley Camp
Lake Greeley Camp Winter Office: P.O. Box 219, Moscow, Pennsylvania 18444 April, 2015 THE SPIRIT (570) 842-3739 Even though the calendar states that Spring began on March 20th, apparently no one let Old Man Winter know that it is time to release his icy grip, and let Spring begin. It has been a rather long Winter, and we are all starting to feel the effects of cabin fever. We can’t wait to get outside and start getting the camp ready for Summer. Hey, it is already April and there is a long list of things to do. Unfortunately, we have to wait just a little bit longer because the snow (yes, there is still snow around camp) has yet to melt. If the weather doesn’t warm up soon, we’ll have to resort to hair dryers and flamethrowers. Celebrated on April 1st, April Fool’s Day is the one day of the year on which people are expected to play tricks or practical jokes on unsuspecting colleagues, friends, and family members. Now we certainly enjoy a good laugh, so email us at [email protected] your April Fool’s Day joke and we will print it our next issue of The Spirit. DJ Jeff is Coming to Greeley! We have an exciting announcement! DJ Jeff Yahney is coming to Lake Greeley Camp this summer! Who is DJ Jeff Yahney? Just the most in-demand DJ on the summer camp circuit, that’s who! Each summer, he performs at camps up and down the east coast entertaining campers with his high energy, fist pumping, get you dancing show that might just blow the roof off of the Gymnasium. DJ Jeff doesn’t just spin records, he and his crew of entertainment specialists bring a light show that would make Van Halen envious. But there’s more: video boards, pyrotechnics, t-shirts, and lasers all add up to a night of extreme fun! Spring Tours We believe the best way to learn about a summer camp is by seeing it first-hand. That is why we provide tours of Lake Greeley Camp throughout the year. They provide the fantastic opportunity to see the camp’s facilities, walk inside camper cabins, ask questions, and meet members of the staff. Tours are scheduled this Spring on the following dates: • Saturday, April 18th • Saturday, April 25th • Sunday, May 17th To schedule your tour, please email or call the Moscow office. Open House tours leave continuously throughout the afternoon. Email us to schedule your tour today! How was Lake Greeley Camp able to snag DJ Jeff when camps are lining up for years in advance just to make a reservation? Through crafty negotiations, maybe a little arm twisting, and a dowhatever-it-takes approach. WINTER REUNION RECAP Having already postponed the Winter Reunion in January because of snow, concerns grew in the Moscow office when we learned of a snowstorm forecasted for the night before the rescheduled reunion. Postponing a second time would be very difficult to do. The snow came as predicted, but thankfully, ended early enough for road crews to clear it from the highways and side streets to allow for safe travel and for the reunion to go on as scheduled. The moment campers began to arrive you could feel their energy, enthusiasm, and excitement fill Sportime USA. Watching campers greet each other and their overwhelming joy to be with their summer friends was invigorating and, quite honestly, contagious. Between the bumper cars, laser tag, arcade games, batting cages, and climbing wall, Sportime USA had everybody jumping from one amusement to the next, and the bagels, donuts, fruit punch, and orange juice kept everybody nourished and hydrated. Needless to say, the Winter Reunion was amazing! Thank you to all the campers, parents, and staff members, some who traveled a significant distance, who woke up early on a Sunday morning, braved the slushy roads, and made it to Sportime USA. Your efforts were certainly rewarded. Seeing all the smiling faces, hearing the laughter and camp stories, and then watching the hugs and disappointment as the reunion came to an end, proved just how special summer camp friendships truly are. Today, the program includes a growing list of activities: trapeze, silk n’ single, unicycling, bungee trampoline, slackline, and juggling. However, when introduced to Lake Greeley Camp in 1994, the Circus Arts program had a rather humble beginning. In fact, it was only one activity, trapeze, and it was only offered during the second half of the summer. The trapeze was originally erected in the area where the swimming pool is now located. It was staffed by circus professionals who were hired for the last four weeks of camp through a company based in New York City that managed circus performers. It was through this management company that we were introduced to Bernadette Pace. Bernadette came to Lake Greeley Camp to direct the trapeze activity in 1996. Watching her interact with campers providing thoughtful instruction and encouragement, we knew she was the person around whom we could build the program. Over the next few summers, because of her passion for trapeze, her enjoyment of teaching it to both campers and staff members, and her endearing personality, trapeze became one of the top three activities, filled to its capacity everytime it was offered. It didn’t take long to realize, trapeze needed to be an activity available the entire summer, and so in 1999, it became an everyday activity with Bernadette Pace directing its operations as a full-time Senior Staff member. Under her direction, the Circus Arts program grew. First came bungee trampoline followed by the addition of silk n’ single in 2006 after the completion of the Gymnasium. In 2011, Bernadette began to share the directorship with our current director of Circus Arts, Billy James. After 18 summers at Lake Greeley Camp, she officially retired at the conclusion of the summer in 2013. What she left was an amazing legacy of introducing such a long list of young people to the activities of the Circus Arts program. She instilled in them the desire to learn and perfect the maneuvers she would demonstrate. But, it was her captivating personality that made her approachable and loved by both campers and staff members. Circus Arts continues to be the vibrant program Bernadette envisioned. Its popularity continues to grow now with Billy James providing the instruction, the desire to improve, and the excitement to perform. 2015 3-Day Excursion This summer, our 3-day trip will take us to Gettysburg and Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Each year, our 3-day trip is received with overwhelming popularity . It’s no wonder considering the busy schedule we have planned and the exciting venues we will be visiting. The cost of the 3-day excursion is $385.00 per person and includes deluxe hotel accommodations, transportation by luxury coach bus, all meals, entrance tickets, and all gratuities. Williamsburg, Virginia Trip Highlights: Day 1 - Our first stop is the Gettysburg National Military Park. Here we will participate in a Park Service Ranger led program about the Battle of Gettysburg, walk the battlefield, and view the exhibits in the Gettysburg Museum. After Gettysburg, we’re off to historical Williamsburg, Virginia for dinner, and then we conclude our first day with an evening spent at Busch Gardens. Day 2 - The entire day is spent at Busch Gardens. Set to an authentic European theme, the amusement park is unlike any other: mixing thrilling attractions, mouth-watering food, amazing landscaping, and top-rated shows and entertainment. From the mild to the exhilarating, there is a ride for everyone. However, if your prefer the exhilarating, Busch Gardens is home to state-ofthe-art roller coasters including the Alpengeist, Apollo’s Chariot, and Griffon, the world’s tallest and first floorless dive coaster. Day 3 - Beneath Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Luray Caverns is the largest cavern system in Eastern America. From paved walkways we will explore vast chambers, some with ceilings as high as 10-stories that are filled with towering stone columns, naturally colored stalactites and stalagmites, and crystal-clear pools. Next to the cavern is the Luray Caverns Car & Carriage Museum. With over 140 items related to transportation including cars, coaches, and carriages, the museum tells a fascinating story of roadway travel. The 3-day trip is scheduled on August 2nd - 4th. Registration is open to all Intermediate and Senior campers. You can register for this trip online by logging into your CampInTouch account. From the Forms & Documents section you can access the registration form. If you prefer, you can download the form from Lake Greeley Camp’s website at lakegreeley. com/registration/forms.html.
