The Best of Greeley 7
Letters to BOG
Dear Bog,
MARCH 2016
I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for
allowing me to be part of The Best of Greeley Magazine family.
I have enjoyed my time writing and editing for the magazine! I
however, do not have the time to continue as editor. Our real
estate business is growing and I can no longer dedicate the hours
it takes to do the magazine justice. I hope for your continued
success and know BOG will thrive under your leadership.

CUSTOMER DEVELOPMENT
I have met so many wonderful people through BOG and
for that I am grateful. Everyone I met has a great story to share
and I plan to write a few of those from time to time. I am already
looking for an old rodeo cowboy for when the Stampede rolls
around. If anyone knows of anyone that was in the Turtle
Association let me know. Nothing beats an old cowboy story!
I am also so thankful for the other writers I have met. Several of
them have become close personal friends.
I also want to thank you for allowing me to write a monthly
column. I love real estate but ink will always be in my blood.

March Photo Contest
The Back Story of Our Cover Model
Northern Colorado Visionaries: Richard and Brenda Lucio
From high school sweethearts to Northern Colorado restaurateurs, Richard
and Brenda Lucio have transformed their vision of Mexican-infused
cuisines into four of the most well known restaurants in the area. Brenda
has been the face of this business, becoming a respected ambassador of
local restaurateurs in Colorado. 16 years ago, Brenda and her husband
Richard opened up Coyote’s Southwestern Grill in West Greeley. Success
has much more meaning to them than a full dining room. The community
has been extremely loyal to them, and their support is something they hold
special. Giving back to the people that have made their dreams possible is
of high value to them. They show this through numerous local donations,
charities, and school functions her. Her goal has always been to help develop
young minds, treating her business like a stepping-stone for every individual
that she hires. She takes her husbands visions and turns them into reality,
supplying jobs to over 300 people. She is the portrait of a women in business
with hopes of inspiring each and every generation she has worked with.

What, Don’t Shampoo?
on your green attire and shamrock, visit
a traditional Irish pub or an Irish themed
restaurant… maybe both… to celebrate
St. Patrick’s Day.
he idea of shampooing one’s hair has
been to cleanse the hair of excess oil,
dirt, food odors, product buildup, and
environmental residue. The time it takes to
shampoo, condition, apply styling products,
blow dry, curl or flat iron could easily take an
hour or more.

Sue Albert, owner of Fat Albert’s, counts down the days to the annual
St. Patrick’s Day celebration.
Sue and her late husband Roger Albert founded Fat
Albert’s in March 1982 and their grand opening was on St.
Patrick’s Day. This March 17 is their 34th anniversary.
Traditional Irish corned beef and cabbage will be served all
day, in fact for the entire week before. There will be specials
on Irish coffee with green Bud Lite flowing. There is a tradition
of lines forming to enter the doors when they open at 10:30am.
Irish beer and whiskey will be flowing at Patrick’s Irish Pub March 17.
Patrick’s Irish Pub, on 8th Ave. just off 9th St., is a
happening place. Green beer will be flowing there as well as
10 Irish beers including Guinness and Murphy’s Stout, a wide
selection of local brews, and a choice of 6 Irish whiskeys as
well as 60 other whiskeys to choose from. Doors will open
early, around 9 or 10 am. There will be Irish coffees, Irish
themed drinks, and a food truck provider for meals and
snacks. Rumor has it that there will be Irish drinking song
karaoke. Irish music will be featured some nights during the
week leading up to St. Pat’s Day.
The countdown to St. Patrick’s Day is always top of mind
at Fat Albert’s, the popular restaurant in Cottonwood Square,
known for its love of this annual event and famous for homemade pies and good food. The restaurant actually serves
corned beef, cabbage, and Irish potatoes on the 17th day of
each month and a shamrock plant, leprechauns, and a sign
counting the days to the Big Day are decorations year round.

Tom Smith (left) and Eugene Sheehan (from Cork, Ireland), UNC administrators, relax after work at Patrick’s Irish Pub in anticipation of St. Paddy’s Day.
St. Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious celebration
held each March 17, the death date of the patron saint of
Ireland. It commemorates the arrival of Christians in Ireland
and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish. The color
green is worn in honor of “The Emerald Isle”. Shamrocks and
leprechauns are often decoration motifs. Lenten restrictions
on drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, encouraging the
holiday tradition of alcohol consumption. It’s all in fun… and
making merry with the Irish! G

“Snow”Much Fun!
by Kim Overholt
t sounds crazy, but just because you live in
Colorado doesn’t mean you ski. And
guess what? It’s okay! There are plenty of
ways to enjoy Colorado’s amazing outdoor
winter recreational opportunities. One such
way is tubing!
I
In general, March is
typically the snowiest month
of the year for Colorado’s
northern mountains. Some
of the largest snow storms
on record happened in
March. That’s why even
when the weather is sunny
and warm in Greeley, there
are still opportunities to enjoy
tubing in the mountains.
If you’re brave enough
to “weather” I-70, Copper
Mountain, Copper
Colorado.com; Frisco, Town
ofFrisco.com/play; Keystone

Winter Park PlayWinter
Park.com, are great
choices for a family day of
tubing. Because these are
weather-related activities,
it’s always good to call
ahead or visit their websites;
some locations recommend
reservations.
Frisco’s tubing hill is

Keystone offers extended
hours from March 2 through
March 27. Reservations are
required and the hill is truly
up the mountain. There is
free parking but it fills on
weekends, so plan accordingly.
This hill has the tallest height
requirement and participants
must be at least 42".
Since most tubing locations recommend children
are at least 36". However,
Copper Mountain is a great
choice for families with
smaller children. First, they
have dual tubes so children
of appropriate height,
parents and friends can
partner together and ride
the hill together. Plus, their
Critterland is small-child

parents and children to enjoy
together, and it’s adjacent to
the tubing hill. Bathrooms
and a concession area are
fairly close, but parking is

sometimes tedious.
Otherwise Winter Park
claims to have the most
options for families. The Town
of Winter Park sponsors a free
sledding hill open to the
public located at Hideaway
Park in the middle of downtown Winter Park. Sleds are
available at the hill and are
checked out using the honor
system although it’s recommended the public brings
their own. Personal tubes are
allowed but be prepared to
trek up the mountain.
Otherwise their mainstay
tube hill is branded by Coca
®
Cola and it’s at Winter Park
Resort.
And don’t be surprised
that most hills recommend
only an hour of tubing at
a time. It’s honestly just
enough time to get your fill
of tubing.

Maybe we don’t want women to stand out as different?
After all, we fought long and hard for the right to own

the men. It has only been recently women have been
given the right to fight alongside the men in the military

On March 8, celebrate women in ways big

Easy Day Trips from Greeley

I
n winter, there’s nothing like a cup of fresh
brewed tea to soothe the mind and warm
the body. One of the most popular brands
of herbal, green, and other teas is made here
in Colorado. An hour’s drive from Greeley,
Celestial Seasonings is a fun day trip especially
as a cold-weather diversion.

olorful tattoos, wild body piercings,
branding, scalpelling, scarification,
and protruding subdermal implants
have rapidly become popular forms of selfexpression and body art in today’s society.
The aromatic smells of spicy teas greet visitors as they
walk in the door. Located at 4600 Sleepytime Drive in
Boulder, there are three options for fun activities: a tour of the
factory, the café, and shop.
Most, if not all, of these
forms of self-expression
and “beautification,”
depending upon the
audience, are permanent
and can have some dramatic
health ramifications. This
includes the sub-category
of oral body art.
Explore the factory and learn about the wonderful world
of tea and see first hand how the products are blended,
packaged and shipped. The tour is free and lasts 45 minutes,
starting on the hour from 10-4 Monday-Saturday and 11-3 on
Sunday. It’s walk in/first served for small groups.
Reservations are needed for larger groups of eight or more.
For safety reasons, children must be at least five years old.
In the tour, you will be immersed in a multi-sensory experience. Scents include cinnamon, lemon grass, and other key
herbs. The mint room is a highlight with intoxicating, pungent
aromas that can pleasurably make eyes water and taste buds
ignite. It’s rare that a factory tour actually takes you out on the
floor like this one does, not behind glass walls. The place is alive
with sounds of rattling conveyor belts and cool flashing lights.
The art gallery features classic Celestial tea box illustrations.
Celestial Seasonings started in 1969 with hand picked
wild herbs from the Colorado Rocky Mountains. First sales
were in health food stores. By 1972, two of their flagship
blends were introduced, Red Zinger and Sleepytime (a bed
time favorite mixing chamomile with lemon grass, rose and
tilia flowers, and peppermint leaves). Sleepytime is touted as
the best selling specialty tea of all time.
Today the line includes green, rooibos and, wellness tea
with over 100 ingredients sourced from 35 countries. The
teas are widely available in grocery stores and specialty
shops in the U.S., Canada, and other countries.
Before or after the tour, try free tea samples at the tasting
bar. The café is a nice respite and don’t miss the tea shop.
The cafe is located behind the tour center and serves breakfast from 7-11 and lunch from 11-2 Monday through Friday.
Don’t miss the shop for teas at great prices as well as gifts
and collectibles including teapots and cups, soaps, lotions,

Piercings of the uvula and
frenums not only cause local
irritation but also pose ingestion and aspiration (inhalation
into the airway and lungs)
hazards. If piercing jewelry is
aspirated into the lungs medical attention is necessary.
Now about those tongue
piercings. The tongue is a
highly vascularized muscle
in a severe infection that
was resistant to antibiotic
treatment until the barbell
was removed. Irritation from
tongue piercings can also
cause unsightly reactive
tumors such as pyogenic
granulomas. Nerve damage can occur with tongue
piercings resulting in
permanent numbness and
loss of taste. Tongue piercings are also responsible
for chipped, fractured, and
poking of holes, and the
insertion of jewelry into the
oral cavity.
Initial Risks associated
with oral piercings include
severe infection, pain, and
swelling of the area around
the piercings. Lip and cheek
piercing studs are held in
place by a disc on the inside
of the mouth. This metal disc
rubs up
against the
gum
tissue and
teeth that
oppose it.
Over time
the
constant
irritation
from the
disc
results in
gingival
recession, root exposure,
loss of tooth structure, tooth
sensitivity, and possible
infection. Once the gum tissue
recedes and the root is
exposed, periodontal surgery
is necessary to repair the

that is necessary for eating
and taste. Piercing of the
tongue can result in severe
swelling that can compromise
the airway and swallowing.
Since the tongue is highly
vascularized, localized
infection can easily spread
throughout the blood stream,
potentially resulting in
endocarditis (infection of the
inside lining of the heart),
compromising the heart valves,
and leading to life-threatening
complications.

ultimately result in tooth
loss, let alone expensive
dental bills.
As with all body piercings,
allergic responses to metal

possible. Final removal of
the piercings often results
in scarring and permanent
holes. So don’t get stuck with
a piercing that you might
seriously regret later. G

Besides wreaking

serious and life-shortening
consequences, such as high

The most common
treatment for sleep apnea –
and until recently, the only
option with a fairly high
success rate — is the use
of Continuous Positive

while a person sleeps.

A Lot of Fun and a Good Value, You Can’t Go Wrong...
2016 Toyota Corolla LE Eco Premium
by Stu Wright
oyota Motor Corporation, makers of the
Toyota Corolla,the best-selling nameplate
of all time, has moved over 40 million of
the model onto driveways around the world.
The compact sedan is in its eleventh generation
configuration, and has been around since 1966.

I recently borrowed a
new Corolla LE Eco
Premium for testing in
Arizona; one that was
painted a pleasing Brown
Sugar metallic and featured black SofTex leatherlike seating surfaces. Ruth

the first day of spring
training when the Rockies’

been a fan of Corolla styling,
and the 2016 has not taken a
step backwards in that department. A little spoiler was
on the trunk, LED lighting
was front and rear, a power
moon roof was up top, and
fog lights were installed.
Aerodynamically designed
alloy wheels were fitted with
P205/55R16 Michelin
Primacy MXV4 lowrolling resistance radials on the car.
The 2016 Corolla sits on
a 106.3” wheelbase, is
69.9” wide, 57.3” high, and
weighs 2,875 lbs., putting it
on an even keel with
Chevy’s Cruze. I’ve always
Ruth and I enjoyed the
Corolla for the week that we
had it. Acceleration was

came in at 30 mpg in all city

It’s Happening… Again!
by Wanda Lowe
ith March here it is time to accept
the fact that I am going to be
another year older. Yep, my birthday
is at the end of the month. Nothing makes
you realize you are getting older than a visit
to the cosmetic counter.
W
I recently ventured to
one and asked the sales
clerk (I think she was a
tween) about a certain
foundation. She informed
me that before applying the
foundation that I should
probably apply a primer.
Wow! I asked her if she
thought I was a car and if I
needed to be sandblasted
too. She smiled sweetly
and informed me that it
couldn’t hurt. I gently took
her in my arms and burped
her before knocking her out
for a long nap.
Birthdays were fun
back when I was young. I
remember counting down
the days before my 16th
birthday and how excited I
was to be able to legally
drive. I remember taking
the driving test and turning
left on a red light. It was in
La Junta so I didn’t hit another car because there
weren’t any to hit. I don’t
know how but I passed my
driving test with flying colors.I also totaled my mom’s
car that year. I blame that
particular mishap on my
best friend’s (we share the
same birthday) shoes. I

was looking at her feet when
we hit the preacher’s parked
car. I didn’t know clergy had
such strong words in their vocabulary. In my
defense they were seriously
cute shoes! I did not get a
ticket or in trouble with my
parents because when I
was 16 I was also seriously
cute. At least the cop and
I thought so.
The next big birthday
was 18. Back then you could
legally drink 3.2 beer and I
could finally vote (not that I
did back then but I could
have). Then 21 came along
and I thought I was grown up
and so sophisticated.
Thinking back I just shake
my head at myself and am
slightly embarrassed for that
girl. After that the years just
seemed to melt together and
life started to happen marriage, kids, laundry,
work… it got real really
quick! I remember thinking
when I was 26 that life was
about perfect. I was young,
happy, loved my husband,
boys, house, dogs, job,
everything. And, most
importantly,I had lost all my
baby weight. Life was good!
This is my BFF and I since birth - we share the same birthday.
Linda Odneal was the reason I wrecked my mom's car. We both still
like seriously cute shoes and dislike going to the cosmetic counter.
That seems just like
yesterday. I can’t relive that
year but in celebration of its’
26th anniversary I am going
to make the best of the next
12 months! I like where I am
at in my life. I am happy living
in Greeley, still love my family, love working, being involved in the community
and grateful for the friends
we have made.I don’t think
we will do much in celebration of my birthday month. I
have never had a green beer
and on St. Patty’s Day might
have to check that off my
bucket list. Other than that
can’t think of anything I need
to do besides checking on
the girl from the cosmetic

counter. I hope she is
having a good recovery.
And if anyone is so inclined
my shoe size is 6.5. I’m still
16 at heart and still love
seriously cute shoes. G
