Edendale Hospital has also scooped the Premier Service Excellence Gold Award for the Kangaroo Mother
Care: Beadie-Beadie Project. Kangaroo Mother Care is provided to reduce child mortality as a result of hypothermia. Which is attributed to a low birth mass. It also promotes Mother Baby Initiative effort through skin to
skin contact.

NATIONAL HEALTH VISIT TO EDH
On 20 August 2015, the Hospital was visited by the delegation from the National
Parliament–Oversight Committee - for the purpose of establishing progress
and actual fulfilment of the commissioned projects . On this insert, we see the
delegation and the KZN Provincial Health Department Principals joined by the
Edendale Hospital CEO as they walk out of the newly opened Emergency Department and Communicable Disease Clinic and Pharmacy.
CHARLIZE THERON VISIT EDH WHIZZKIDS UNITED
On 27 August WhizzKids United was honoured by the visit Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP)
team! The visit included the founder herself, Oscar winner Charlize, and some of her amazing team and supporters. During the visit the CTAOP team learnt more about the Health Academy and On The Ball and Game
Changers programmes. The Whizzkids Academy uses a soccer medium as an entry point to health promotion and so many lives have been touched for significant health outcomes. We were really happy to see all
of our visitors joining in the fun on the pitch!
When Ms Charlize Theron came in 2013 all she got to see was a busy construction site for the Football for
Hope Centre. But this time around the Health Academy and Football for Hope Centre were in full swing and
had the opportunity to show the entire delegation the complexity of WhizzKids United’s approach in the
Edendale community.
EDH GARDENING PROJECT
One –home-one gardens’ have been initiated with patients. Patients were
given basic vegetable growing training and are assisted with seedlings and
basic implements. These gardens are monitored together with their health
outcomes and ARV adherence. A yearly competition and prize giving ceremony is held with patients to nominate the best gardens. “ Viva Healthy Lifestyle
Viva!”
We have also initiated jewelry making and sewing projects as well as small
scale businesses with some of the participants. Since April 2014 to date, 111
one home one gardens have been established. A total of 1245 seed packs
have been distributed and 4 training sessions have been conducted. Five
small businesses have been started up and three jewelry making projects as
well as one sewing project. Start-up kits were given to patients. We would
like to commend the efforts of the Edendale Hospital Social Work Department for the good co-ordination of these projects which are also a measure
of alleviating poverty.
67 MINUTES MANDELA DAY
DAY– 17 JULY 2015
On the 17 July 2015, Edendale Hospital visited Magaye Visually Impaired Home at KwaDindi for the 67 minutes Mandela day. On the visit they were welcomed by the Ward 6
Counsellor Mr F.M Makhathini and Magaye Principal Mr Mqadi.

CHILD HEALTH WEEK 14-25 SEPTEMBER
2015

On the 14 - 25 September 2015 , Gateway Clinic and Paediatric Department
coordinated the above campaign. The aim of the initiative was to educate
and provide screening services to the children. Nine (9) Early Childhood Developmental Centres (Crèches )were visited and the following services were
provided:
Ÿ Weighing of children
Ÿ MUAC-Mid Upper Arm Circumference
Ÿ IMCI-Integrated Management in Childhood Illnesses
Ÿ Immunization
Ÿ Development screening
Ÿ Deworming
Ÿ TB & HIV Screening
Ÿ Referrals and Health education.
The Outreach Campaign Team managed to attend 950 children during the
campaign. The campaign strives towards reducing child mortality and morbidity rate and promoting early dictation and treatment of chronic diseases
for example TB and Malnutrition.
GATEWAY CLINIC—2015 OPEN DAY
Edendale Hospital Gateway Clinic hosted its Annual Open Day on the 10 September 2015. The event main aim was to market the services rendered in the

WOMENS DAY CELEBRATION
Theme: “Igniting your joy as a Woman”
The 19th August marked the celebration of women's day at Edendale Hospital and the resounding message
to all women was that “the destiny of leadership continues to await many women.” It is time that
women claim themselves, ignite their gifts and uplift their communities”. Women were encouraged to reflect on the fact that policy frame works have wedged the door open for women's empowerment and all that remained was for women as a collective to “step into the room and build
our nation .” This year’s theme focused on igniting our joy as women . Our guest speaker for the
day was Mrs Zanele Hlatshwayo., from the Provincial Health Gender Office. We were also honoured by the attendance of the Provincial Manager– Diversity Management Ms Nomusa Mayeni .
Mrs T Gobind, the Chairpersons of the Edendale Hospital Women’s Forum was also among the
participants on the programme. Edendale , spoke with one voice about the importance of women
crushing the mind of self doubt and understanding the true power they have. Mrs Z Hlatshwayo
made reference to the story of Samson and Delilah and the power of Delilah. The event was well
attended and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
MENS DAY CELEBRATION
THEME: “ Fighting gender violence at home”
July has been declared a MEN’S MONTH by the Office of the Premier. The theme for this year
was: Father and Sons: Izwi Lamadoda and the sub themes are:
Create Better Families in the fight of Gender Based Violence and encourage Child Maintenance.
Honoring Men in the Province who have played a good fatherhood role in communities and families. Edendale Hospital commemorated the Men’s month using the sub-theme on the 31st July
2015 and 77 men attended the event.
2015 OPEN DAY CELEBRATION
On the 10 September 2015, Edendale Hospital Hosted its Annual Open Day
which was well supported by the Edendale community, NGO’s, Community ’
pupils turned in their numbers including Nsikayethu High School. The hospital services were displayed, career guidance , RAF office Display and checking
on RAF claims progress was performed on site; ITeach and Traditional Leaders displayed; providing screening services and educational talks.

BACK AWARENESS WEEK
Back week is an annual back care week that is celebrated worldwide. From the 2nd September to the 6th September 2015, this period was set aside for back week awareness.
Health promotion is a very important component of Physiotherapy practice . It is for this
reason that the Physiotherapy Department at Edendale hospital hosted a back care
awareness campaign. The Aim of the back week awareness campaign was to promote
effective back care to Edendale staff and the public visiting the hospital. During this
time a service station was put up near the hospital entrance where we gave physiotherapy brochures on back care, demonstrating correct lifting techniques, good posture in
different positions such as standing, sitting or lying down. Our clients and health workers both clinical and non-clinical employees were able to visit the service station and ask
questions concerning back care. The event was a resounding success.
MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS
Theme: “ Mental Health at the workplace: - Supporting colleagues with
Mental Health problems”
“It
is possible to live and work with people with mental illness if they are
treated with respect and dignity”!! The Assistant Manager Nursing: Medical
Department Mrs FB Ngema directed the proceedings of the event and welcomed everyone present. The topics that were covered on the day were as
follows: Workplace stressors, Identifying the onset of mental illness, Burnout in a workplace, How to identify depression and its management, stress
management and supporting the colleague with mental illness in a workplace. It is humbling to note that at Edendale Hospital, our employees have
access to the Employee Assistance Programmes, Occupational Health as
well as Counselling Services that are rendered by Psychologists.
PHARMACY WEEK
Pharmacy week was held between the Monday 31st August – Friday 4th September; the focus for this year
was with regard to chronic illness. The activities of the week included raising awareness to Chronic illnesses.
The plan for pharmacy week was orchestrated by the pharmacist interns who planned events over the 5 days,
and were assisted greatly by Edendale Hospital pharmacy team.
A help desk was placed just outside out- patient pharmacy and was manned by a pharmacist and an assistant in rotation
every hour to provide information on these chronic illnesses such as Respiratory disorders, Diabetes Mellitus, Endocrine
Disorders, Heart disease, Hypertension, Blood disorders. The help desk was ACTIVE between 9am – 1pm, and it consisted
of patient information leaflets on diabetes, hypertension and respiratory disorders. There was also a power point video
demonstrating the use of the new non disposable insulin pen . The help desk was available to patients and EDH staff who
came to enquire on health issues and their questions were addressed to their satisfaction.
A power point presentation was conducted by the pharmacists and the pharmacists assistants at CDC pharmacy- providing general information pertaining to HIV/Aids, TB and opportunistic diseases. The main message was
on promotion of compliance and drug efficacy and also to inform patients about drug interaction where a
combination of medicines is used.
A presentation was also done by the pharmacist interns at the diabetic clinic. The patients received diet
sheets and information booklets on diabetes that was designed in such a way that it is easy to understand and
were in isiZulu and English. The patients were told to pay attention to the presentation as questions were
asked with the winners being given goodie bags that consisted of biscuits in a carrier bag , diabetes diary and
pens. 5 bags were given out to 5 patients who answered the questions correctly. After the presentation all
the patients in the clinic received fruits including apples and oranges which were kindly donated by the EDH
pharmacy department
On Thursday , 3 September 2015, the interns visited two schools namely Sukuma High school and Siyahlomula
High School in the surrounding area to market the profession of pharmacy as a profession of choice and provide information to the grade 10 , 11 and 12 learners on what pharmacy is about and the necessary requirements. Our sincere gratitude is extended to the principals of these two schools -this was a resounding success,
the learners were also given pens and chips for attendance. There were questions asked based on the power
point presentation and the winners were given gift bags with pencil case, pen, file and a bag. The learners also
asked questions which were answered by the interns in order to give them a better understanding
On Friday 3 September 2015 the pharmacy department visited all the pediatric wards in the hospital to donate
toys and food packs to all the wards. Each child received a food pack with chips , juice and sweets, toys. Assorted toys were given out to each child in the ward based on age group. The infants in ICU received blankets. The
toddlers received rubber ducks and rattles and the older male children received cars and animated soccer balls
and the girls received dolls. Toys were also donated to each ward to be kept in their individual play area. The
toys donated included puzzles ,playing blocks, Lego and coloring books . The EDH pharmacy teams raised funds
for this project and also held a fundraising cake sale on the 28 August 2015. The EDH pharmacy team wore specially designed golf shirts during the pharmacy week.
HERITAGE DAY CELEBRATION
On the 30th of November 2015, Edendale Hospital celebrated Heritage Day. All departments took
part In the event by dressing up in their different attire and showing off their culture in dancing.
The day was a true celebration of contributions made by all South Africans in building diverse South
African culture on our Rainbow Nation.
THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT HERITAGE:
Heritage Day is celebrated on the
24th of September each year. It encourages South Africans to come
together to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and diversity of our Rainbow nation.
Heritage is about social cohesion, being able to work
together. It is also about being able to unite together
for a common purpose/ goal/vision or mission.
It is about building teams together, teams who are
proud of what they are doing.
It is about how we behave as a team from cultural
background, different professional background for
the common quality services.
Heritage is about embedding our identity. The identity that we inherited from God. In terms of service
delivery it is critical to know who are we being and
what are we here for and what are we expected to
deliver.
Then our culture in the form of how we behave will
then determine whether we reach our expectations.
Our behaviour is our own institution are translated in
the form of the core value. As the culture of the people can be detected in the way behave.
2015 SPORTS DAY CELEBRATION
Edendale Hospital Sports day was held on the 18th July 2015. The aim is to promote healthy
lifestyle through Sports. Good health involves appropriate exercise, body composition
and care of the body. Institutions that took part were: Edendale Hospital, Richmond Hospital, St Apollinaries Hospital and Northdale Hospital.
