Last week saw booklovers on the oval enjoying a Book Week picnic while dressed as their favourite book character, some classes meeting their ‘buddy class’ for story reading, museum trips and Herdsman’s Wildlife Centre visits by various classes. We also have many pre-service teaching students in various classes learning teaching skills from our accomplished teachers. This week’s major focus is the annual house athletics events. Yesterday our children completed and competed in the distance runs and the long jump events. Those championship points will add to Thursday’s main event: the house team and individual running events. A highlight of that day will be the parent races and leader ball teams! Weather tomorrow is looking to be excellent! Please ensure your children are protected for a day in the full sun. NAPLAN results are currently being scrutinised by class teachers – results are generally impressive, but with the area of spelling being an area requiring fuller development. Parent of years 3 & 5 will have already received their child’s NAPLAN report in an envelope with an explanatory leaflet attached. Next week’s School Board meeting will more fully explore those NAPLAN results. In weeks 9 & 10 our PP-year 2 children will be involved in morning swimming lessons at Beatty Park. In-term swimming lessons are a normal part of the W.A. primary curriculum – we expect everyone to attend. Please understand you can only catch a cold from a cold virus – not from being cold or wet!! Teachers will have their instructions for our Pre-primary first timers on their doors. 2016 Next week years 1-6 will be having basic First Aid training provided by St John’s Ambulance. The ‘new’ demountable (in place for a 2016 year 3 or 4 class) will be used for those sessions. Ask your child for a life saving demo! Term 1 2016 Mon 1 Feb – Fri 8 April Regards Mark Jones Term 2016 Tue 26 April – Fri 1 July Term 3 2016 Mon 18 July – Fri 23 Sept Term 4 2016 Mon 10 Oct – Thur 15 Dec 2015 Voluntary School Contributions K-Yr 6: $60 per child AFTER THE SCHOOL DAY…. After the school day it is pleasant for parents and classmates to occasionally catch up in a ‘family’ way for a short time before going home. However, a couple of problems have arisen. After school YOUR children are YOUR responsibility, but normal school rules still apply – i.e. no climbing trees, no throwing sand, no running through gardens, no children accessing classrooms. Parents are expected to be in-sight of their children to ensure proper supervision. The only toilets to be accessed after 3pm by K – 6 are the ones for middle block (rooms 7, 8 & 9)- also used by OSHClub, or the adult accessed/adult supervised disabled toilet adjacent the admin block. ECE teachers will not be letting children or parents into their classrooms for access to toilets/bandaids/tissues/water. Our teachers come early to school or stay late after school hours to prepare for your children; not to continue looking after them! The children K-6 lasted both the distance and time taken for this event really well! All green sponsorship cards have been entered with the number of individual laps covered. It was very pleasing to see so many parents and grandparents running and jogging laps of the oval. Sponsorship money is steadily coming in. As of yesterday $10,300 has come in Fabulous- we are heading towards a record amount!! Remember that for every $5 raised, children will receive a raffle ticket for the end of term Lapathon Raffle. There’s a huge number of prizes to be won! STAFF CARPARK AND KIDS It is important that children accompanied or not, are NOT taken through the staff car park. Please use the paths either side of the staff carpark for accessing classes. LOWER OVERFLOW CARPARK Please assist the safe traffic flow by only moving CLOCKWISE through the lower /overflow car park. BOOKWEEK PICNIC A lovely time was had by all at last week’s Book Week picnic. Lots of parents and grandparents joined us to read books to our younger children. Many of the year 6 children took the leadership opportunity to meet and read to year 1 and 2 children wanting their story ‘dose’! Thank you to our Librarian, Mrs Fazzalari, and the P & C mothers for organising a fun event. Feel free to dig up any old clippings of musical experiences and celebrations you or friends have had to add to our wall. Find clippings of local musical happenings in the local papers and add them to the collection too! The Big Music Night (BMN) Special Guests Around the corner and over the hill (Thursday 12 November! ) is the Big Music Night. Mr Howesmith has sent out the call for musicians and groups who want to audition for a special guest spot in this year’s concert. Please see Mr Howesmith ASAP with your ideas. The BMN will be held at Hale School Auditorium again this year and tickets will go on sale next term. Back To Kindy Children in years one and two are heading back to kindy to plan and perform music on the ECE ‘Soundscape’. This excellent outdoors music playground has been in use for over a year now and offers various tuned instruments and percussion drums. Year 1 & 2 children have to plan using a simulated version of the instruments back in the music room, taking into account the different notes on hand at the soundscape before having the chance to perform as a group on the equipment. Stay tuned!!! Join in and sing the latest whole school song ‘Music Count Us In’ has released this year’s song. It is titled GOLD and is a hit with kids across Australia. Over half a million children will celebrate music education in Australia by singing this song together on October the 29th. Teachers and parents can access plenty of free resources to help them teach in all manner of schools; big and small, musical or not.
